Livin' on past the space age. Love these muthers... Tommy, Roky, Stacy and both sets of bass/drums monster rhythm sections. Both were huge and I saw both live in person many times. The cosmic perspectives of sages Tommy Hall with Stacy Sutherland and the persecuted fragile Roky were only matched by Dr Timothy Leary and the visionaries of all ages (and the pre Scientology Incredible String Band). A tip of the hat to the efforts of the Moody Blues too. These were all people who tried to move the human society forward to SANITY. More now than ever.
Some People are just too intelligent and astute , that the are deemed crazy. I found this because of a channel on musicians and acid. This guy was a Talent!!
Reminds me of a phrase I heard from the madman speaking on Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon": "Its everyone else that's crazy. I am the one who is sane!"
top band ive been told they were the first band to use the word psychedelic on the cover of their 1st lpi i cherish my vinyl ive been listening to this band for 29 years.i just wish all the live gigs were released on analogue vinyl cause for me that is the best way to hear this band.ive got the live at the sump n else show & the studio lps & outtakes.they were a ground braking band that had a sound unlike any one else so they are a lot more important to musical history than they get credit for great post..
Music was progressing so fast in the 60s. and Roky was right--timing was everything. You had to be their first with the most. One of the great "what ifs" in rock, in a decade full of them. What if the Elevators brought feedback to the masses before anyone heard of the Velvet Underground, The Who, Pink Floyd and the Yardbirds? We'd be celebrating Roky and Co today as innovators and the others as copyists--not the other way around. Just like if Brian Wilson had come out with "Smile" before the Beatles 'Sgt Pepper". The Beatles would be seen as second rate imitators.
Rip Rocky, twice he refused to sign my acoustic guitar that had other Texas players on it, but 10 years ago he signed my toy electric guitar, go figure. I asked him about Paul Revere and the Raiders, without missing a beat he said he loved them
A San Francisco Bay radio station, KEWB - AM, became KNEW - AM in the mid-1960's. At that point in time, we were left with KFRC - AM and KYA - AM. In protest of commercialized Top-40 station's musical menu, we tuned in FM radio stations such KMPX, KSAN, and KSJO. We were turned on to the psychedelic sounds of that day, sounds which AM radio stations refused to play.
Funny when he speaks on "horror rock", and how people are gonna jump into it. Not knowing of bands to come like manson, mushroom head etc.. He said thats what he calls it. So I think its safe to say that Rocky coined the term way back then
Can someone tell me what year this was recorded please. I can't fathom how together Rocky is, the music is fantastic and his voice never sounded better. He's lucid and seems completely with it...great stuff.
As much as I like The Seeds and other bands from the mid 60a,I have to admit that Texas and the 13 Floor Elevators was the epicenter.of what was great music back then. The same could be said a dozen years later when after the Pistols played San A& Dallas, the template for the Killed By Death sound was drawn by Texas bands the Hates,NCM, Bobby Six and others.Like the Misfits said "Texas Is The Reason".
oooooooooooh damn man please what's the song name at 4:05 ? roky is just a very important person in the history of rock music.. but the sad thing is that he is one of the "unknown" ones..
why do people say that current stuff sounds like roky. thats bullshit. roky was plating this stuff way before these new not-so-original parents even met. i dont even mention any other musicians when im talkin about the elevators or any of rokys manifestations. he is above. was then, and will always be. roky is the new king of rock.
What happened to him after this, because he was NEVER the same after 1980. He was able to have complete thoughts here. He was articulate and made a lot of sense. Watch his interview from 1984 and it's like a different person and then we see him in 2005 and he can barely talk. He agrees with everything by saying "YA, uh huh, or something, you know", but he can never really formulate a coherent thought. It seems like 1980 was the last time could. Did he have a lobotomy after that? Honest question.
I think he went off his meds and started doing more speed. As a social worker who works with individuals diagnosed w/ schizophrenia, I can tell you from experience and education that untreated psychosis is toxic for the brain; the longer an individual stays in the hallucinatory state, the more difficult it becomes to obtain mental clarity/solace. Side note: amphetamines and schizophrenia DO NOT mix.
Psychotic break/onset of mental illness. Nothing necessarily "happened" per se, it's just when he was programmed to self-destruct so to speak. Have seen it many times & it's terrifying. Looks like it ran in his family genetically & was a product of abuse by his mom.
In your acknowledged influence's you can "Moses" to that list. Moses was a friend of Rokys in 1974. Click my user name to see what I mean. Listen to Captain,Captain and give the vid called "The Old OneKnite Bar Austin Texas" too. Rock On! :-)
Not to mention Black Sabbath releases their S/T ten years before this interview. “Horror rock” as he called it was definitely already a thing by that point
Roky, you know and I know I wrote SHe lives in a time, etc but Percy Forman was a better lawyer and you had help from beyond. Erik is now fifty plus years old. And looks like you, minus all the body hair.i see you have gone on and I have always missed you. I love you alwYs See you down the road. KITTEN
R.I.P Roky Erickson!! one of the best underrated musicians out there..

He was a genius❤ No one like him
Roky Erickson has one of the best voices in Rock N Roll. Also the dude does a mean Bob Dylan impression.
Wow I love the studio recording but Roky’s voice live here was amazing!

His voice is so damn good and cool. Man I love him.
I'm so lucky to have seen him before he passed away (shortly before) although it was SO depressing to see him like that.
Some People are just too intelligent and astute , that the are deemed crazy. I found this because of a channel on musicians and acid. This guy was a Talent!!
Using powerful psychoactive drugs on a chemically "normal" brain can have devastating results. They messed him up in that mental institution.
Reminds me of a phrase I heard from the madman speaking on Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon": "Its everyone else that's crazy. I am the one who is sane!"
saw him at austin psych fest last night and he was jammin' like it was 1966
R.I.P. Roky and thank you for all the inspiration!
gotta love garage rock..gotta love it
That voice is dripping with cool

roky his music still flows
Wow! Amazing! Also, who was his lead guitar player? That guy was insanely good!
Wow this rips.. Roky is the man
Rip Rocky, twice he refused to sign my acoustic guitar that had other Texas players on it, but 10 years ago he signed my toy electric guitar, go figure. I asked him about Paul Revere and the Raiders, without missing a beat he said he loved them
Why’d he refuse?
if you only ever listen to one rocky erison song listen to BERMUDA at full volume, it is fuckin outrageous.
Rocky ERICKSON BAAAAAAAAABYYYYY
A perfect monster has no end

I've already checked it and it's amazing ! I'm a big elevators fan and of course a big roky fan :)
Really strong vocal on his best known song .
first tune reminded me of a Dead Moon song, or rather the other way around.
Song is 'You're Gonna Miss Me'
Good. You need to check out the album it comes from, THE EVIL ONE. Lots of great tunes on it!
Genius
Fuck he is amazing live.
R.I.P.
The name of the song is IT'S A COLD NIGHT FOR ALLIGATORS.
Not yet! It needs to happen soon!!! I'm doing what I can....

oooooooooooh damn man please what's the song name at 4:05 ? roky is just a very important person in the history of rock music.. but the sad thing is that he is one of the "unknown" ones..
RIP Roky
he was so right about horror rock..so right
What year is this from?
Anyone know what year this is that the interview took place?
why do people say that current stuff sounds like roky. thats bullshit. roky was plating this stuff way before these new not-so-original parents even met. i dont even mention any other musicians when im talkin about the elevators or any of rokys manifestations. he is above. was then, and will always be. roky is the new king of rock.

Too much acid, too much schizophrenia, too much life. RIP Roky
Psychotic break/onset of mental illness. Nothing necessarily "happened" per se, it's just when he was programmed to self-destruct so to speak. Have seen it many times & it's terrifying. Looks like it ran in his family genetically & was a product of abuse by his mom.
is this on dvd?
@lifeisatrip what song is it :S
Dust is the greatest song ever
When did this interview happen? looks like1980 maybe late 70s at best?
Go stacey
Who is the guitarist?
Radio should have been playing this genius instead of the crap they played 2:29
Texas' John Mellancamp!
In your acknowledged influence's you can "Moses" to that list. Moses was a friend of Rokys in 1974. Click my user name to see what I mean.

RiP
Similar to the great Rory Gallagher in a very cool way idk maybe me .
i like how he predicts The Misfits
The Misfits came out BEFORE this. This is 1980. The Misfits had been around since early 1977.
Not to mention Black Sabbath releases their S/T ten years before this interview. “Horror rock” as he called it was definitely already a thing by that point
he talks about horror rock, horror rock and roll songs man that's basically a prediction of black sabbath :D
this was conducted much after sabbath burst onto the scene
WHAT? This is 1980! Black Sabbath came out a DECADE earlier!

I’ve been on coke. They are both on coke.
man too bad misfits and roky never played together back in the late 70s
