    Hi there, Liron here!
    Today I want to share with you a quick tip & painting process that I think will help many watercolor painters (and painters in general perhaps?).
    🎨USING PURE COLOR 🎨
    This is a topic I covered in several past videos. This time I wanted to BETTER DEMONSTRATE IT.
    In this video I demonstrate how using pure colors, and multiple colors can help achieve a more wholesome and interesting result.
    🎨DRAWING, VALUES & COLOR 🎨
    I'm a big proponent of the drawing + values idea, and that colors are secondary.
    With that being said, sometimes even when I get the values and drawing correctly, something is missing.
    I find that if I not all three primaries are clearly present, something's missing.
    Sometimes it's also true for green.
    Including all four in my opinion leads to a very interesting result.
    🎨CONCLUSION 🎨
    I hope this video helps you, or inspires you to try a different approach.
    Also, I cannot stress enough how important DRAWING is.
    A quality drawing is hard to mess up with paint.
    I highly recommend you check out my beginner's drawing course here:
    bit.ly/2Gn4rOID...
    And I'll talk to you again real soon (:

    This is beautiful!! How do you decide what color goes where in a painting like this?

    • @LironYan
      @LironYan  6 років тому +78

      Thank you ^_^
      Very spontaneously (:
      I tend to use lots of yellows where I know it will stay light, because yellow is generally lighter. I then vary it with red, usually.
      Blue tends to be darker (and red too sometimes), so I'll use these where the shadows are. So that means blue, purple and green shadows (all the mixes of blue + red / yellow).
      And sometimes I'll throw all of that out the window and just improvise! Give it a try (;

    Ah! A Yancosky palette with light, bright colors. Cool.
    Drawing, values then colors. Something that Stan Miller stresses.

    I LOVE watercolor paintings on old architecture and old cars! I have a photo of an old car in our rural driveway,covered in ice that I really want to paint. The car is in several old rusty colors so it will be fun to paint!

    Thank you for your kind reply. I only heard about this type of brush yesterday for the first time, and it's great to see it in action when you use it. Your punchy and clear style of painting has caused me to put down other mediums and take out my watercolours again. I love the way you do not overwork your colours but leave the brightness of the paper to pop through.

    Haha, well your subject didn't look promising, but you produced something unexpected with your use of color. I totally get what you say about the primaries. They should really all be there in some way, because they appear in life! I just got a new little set of paints for my holiday, and I shall use them on our 12 hour flight!

    • @LironYan
      @LironYan  6 років тому +5

      Flights are a great time to paint and draw (;
      And yes! Almost any subject can be made interesting, as long as you have a vision. I easily see beauty in mechanical objects with lots of straight lines, for some reason.
      Thank you ^_^

      @@LironYan your brain likely has engineering/ architectural design abilities and you have strong systems thinking. This links visual-spatial skills with function. How things work mechanically and physiologically, and in multiple space dimensions. I come from a family of engineers and didn't realize when I was younger that it was also associated with art and being a maker. Or why I had friends who were geologists and musicians. I composed music and liked to problem solve. Spent many years in healthcare before recognizing my art was indeed a basic need and I should allocate time for it. Hope others don't wait as long as I did.

    Bingo! You are so right! Very well shown. I will say, though, that I find mother nature to have more interesting and more abundant colors than anything man-made... of course I'm including people and animals but its true of land/sea/sky scapes also. I do enjoy painting things (for lack of a better word) but mama nature has them beat for colors.

    • @LironYan
      @LironYan  6 років тому +1

      I get it, and I agree!
      But I would also say this one has a bit of mother nature, the rust is a naturally occurring phenomenon (; Haha!
      But in any case, I really need to train myself in seeing the different colors of nature, because for some reason they are easier for me to see in these types of objects.
      Thank you ^_^

    What advice you'd give to someone who has always used acrylic colors and now intends to learn watercolors?
    What is better- expensive colors or good quality watercolor paper?
    Silly questions, I know. 😅

      Haha, thank you and welcome aboard.
      These aren't silly questions at all! (:
      1. There are endless ways, methods and approaches for watercolor painting. I suggest finding a style you like for yourself, and then learning from the person who does that style.
      Also, remember that watercolor has lots of properties that acrylics and other types don't, so play around with them a lot and learn what you enjoy!
      2. Good quality paper in my opinion is more important. For me it was a HUGE difference, much more than when I switched paints.
      I hope this helps ^_^

    hehe you should really do a modern painting! I am a modern artist myself. Going to start working with watercolors:) Hey should I pick up the Daniel Smith Watercolors? Are they worth the price? I mean I was thinking of buying the Shinhan Pro paints. I saw you tested them.

    • @LironYan
      @LironYan  6 років тому

      I actually did some paintings that could pass as modern art. Maybe I'll share in a future video (:
      Daniel Smiths are GREAT. They are among my top fav brands.
      ShinHan PWC are also great, and cheaper. If you want to save money I would go for them instead.

      Sometimes you need to visit one extreme to avoid another.
      I really have to push myself at times, to make sure I'm not dulling everything completely! (:

    Hi Liron, you're definitely not afraid of colour! I need to do a bit more of these kind of exercises to loosen up. Pls can u tell me what brand of Pthalo blue you used here? Thanks.

      Thank you 😊🙏🏼
      I’m using the artist grade line of Winsor Newton. So this one is actually called Winsor Blue (but that’s just a name, it’s essentially Phthalo Blue).

      Liron Yanconsky thanks! I use navskaya palitra paints but not sure if they have phthalo by another name.

    Hi Liron, at around 8:10 you start adding the second layer of darker pigment to the car. Did you let the first layer dry before doing this?
