I love how this is a frank conversation between the addict and the addiction itself. Maynard performing the roles for both onstage like this is just perfection. The impact he was aiming for still hits as hard today as it did in 1993. The entire band is amazing but Maynard is the ultimate front man. The way he picks an audience member to focus on due to his stage fright has the unintended consequence of adding that something extra to the performances. This better go down in the annals of musical history.
So I haven’t seen this touched on by others yet but Maynard (who by now i hope you know is the singer) has stage freight. So when he came out to sing this; more like preform this. Acid man.....acid, a member of ministry gave him a bottle of bushmills with a couple hits of acid in in prior to this show.....or so I read in a article
This song is written from the perspective of a friend of the band who felt he could only be creative when he was drunk. This is Maynard's performance art depicting addiction from that persons perspective.
I'm pretty sure Maynard said that he has severe stage fright, and it helps him be less nervous by acting in character. Also with the amount of fans of tool that are bound to some type of substance I think he was trying to deliver a message
I'm going to give my two cents on this performance, which is from 1993 Reading Festival (UK). Their live shows these days are a lot different. First, Sober is was the album's single at the time, it was played on the radio. I even heard this live performance on the radio at the time. So if any song was to be broadcasted it would be this one. I'm sure Tool knew this and put on their best show for this song. Not saying the rest of the show wasn't good, just they knew they had a bigger audience during this song and wanted to impress. Why wouldn't you? Maynard, the lead singer, you could say, embodies the music. In the earlier days he was very energetic (not sure that's the right word) on stage, if you see any of their earlier concerts on UA-cam you'll see that he's quite physical in his movements. Some are amusing... These days he stays to the back of the stage more. Many people make assumptions about why Maynard is at the back. He doesn't suffer from stage freight as many like to say. I've yet to find a reference for this. Going by his own biography he hates the term 'frontman'. He believes he's part of a group and all members are important. He doesn't want the focus all on him. In all the bands he's a part of, he is not in the typical 'frontman' position. Another reason for his choice of position is due to the vocals that he sings. He thinks the best place to sing them are at the back of the stage to avoid noise. Suggest going through their earlier stuff first, just my personal opinion. Most people seem to start out with 10,000 Days or Lateralus and jump all over the place. I think experiencing Tool through it's evolution is interesting. Don't need to do the songs in order. Try Bottom next. :) Enjoy your Tool journey.
Some great heavy metal songs jumpdafuckup by soulfly, Locust by machine head, walk by pantera, I stand alone by godsmack, halo by soil, hail to the king by avenged sevenfold
I wonder exactly the same thing. What is going on inside his head when he performs? That's a great song. Their first works are more "easy-listening" and they work fine to help you get into their most fucked up songs, rhythmically speaking xD Maybe you should try Aenema next or Stinkfist \o/ By the way, I loved seeing you getting confused with Jambi haha. Happened to me too, but it's fun.
Adam Jones (Tthe guitarist) doesn't move much because TOOL is a mathematical band, for real. He's counting. This is very early TOOL. Keep digging into the rabbit hole and see how they evolve. I've seen them in concert too many times to count. One of my fave bands of all time.

VAST is one of my favourites too, ever since I first heard Here on a free compilation album put out by Kerrang! magazine. Jon Crosby is a special talent. I salute your impeccable taste Jessica x
@@ameliacharles2284 thanks sweetie
@@jessicas7336 VAST do have the rare reaction

Not many people know of them and they should
@@jessicas7336 I totally agree with you Jess. One of the greatest debut albums ever. Been a fan since it came out and I got to see them on the Music For People tour and when they toured Turquoise in the UK. Magical x
Opeth...Ghost of Perdition, Live at Red Rocks....it'll change everything
To ask what's going on in this man's brain would be like opening Pandora's box. Something we probably shouldn't do and take it all at face value. He is a genius. Wine maker and army vet.
Acid man.....acid, a member of ministry gave him a bottle of bushmills with a couple hits of acid in in prior to this show.....or so I read in a article
it's called.....god mode
The song is actually about a friend of the band who was only creative when he was drunk.
This was exactly the same reaction as mine! I was like "WTF is happening to the singer"... I really enjoy it though
Maynard used to have a bit of stage fright. Now he sings in the back and is even better.
Tool The Pot!!!!!

You should listen to "descending" or "schism" by tool :) if you haven't already. Sorry, I just found your channel
Enjoy your Tool journey.
Some great heavy metal songs jumpdafuckup by soulfly, Locust by machine head, walk by pantera, I stand alone by godsmack, halo by soil, hail to the king by avenged sevenfold
Try Danny Cary (Tool drummer) live drum cam video of Pnuema.
Great reaction! Plz react to all their songs but make sure to keep 'Third Eye' and 'Rosetta Stone' for final two
Great Video👍
I wonder exactly the same thing. What is going on inside his head when he performs?
That's a great song. Their first works are more "easy-listening" and they work fine to help you get into their most fucked up songs, rhythmically speaking xD
Maybe you should try Aenema next or Stinkfist \o/
By the way, I loved seeing you getting confused with Jambi haha. Happened to me too, but it's fun.
u gotta do the DEFTONES- MY OWN SUMMER
Adam Jones (Tthe guitarist) doesn't move much because TOOL is a mathematical band, for real. He's counting. This is very early TOOL. Keep digging into the rabbit hole and see how they evolve. I've seen them in concert too many times to count. One of my fave bands of all time.
You need to react to the POT!
Check out tool "learn to swim". Way back then they were talking about global warming and the rise of water levels in the ocean.
Learn to swim = AEnema, is that!! TooL= GOAT!!!
Best live performance of all tool time lol.
You know I will never know why I find Maynard so attractive here 🤣
Persona
Maynard the lead singer doesn't' do drugs. He is playing a part to the struggle of drugs.
