Just a fashion history side note 😅 the victorian's and ankles thing isn't true. In fact, anyone under the upper upper class would have always had their shoes and ankles showing. Their hems needed to be several inches above the ground to avoid excess wear and dirt, bc they were working/moving all day. Only the upper class could just sit still or walk super slow in indoor environs all day long.

@@claymcdermott718 to be fair the Victorian's are why we call the "dark ages" the dark ages, even though it was extremely advanced and was the time period of amazing growth in philosophy and science. 😅 Each time period has to find another one to 💩 on.

@@RelaxAndMeditateChannel you misunderstood me. it was not commonly thought of as "dark" and backwards and dirty and stupid until the Victorians. The victorians had an ax to grind with the middle ages, mainly bc they wanted to embrace the Enlightenment ideals over those of the middle ages. This propaganda of the "Enlightenment" vs the "stupid backwards and dirty Dark Ages" was also tied to protestantism and their dislike of middle ages Catholic thought.
My husband finally was able to quit porn after 20 years of watching it. I am so proud of him. (I have full access to everything of his now, even incognito)
Also, forgiveness after porn is possible. I love him with all my heart, and I have forgiven him. With Jesus, everything is possible.
My wife and I also have full access to each other's devices, and both of us can see what the internet was used for through our modem/router. We did it for our kids safety, but it definitely has worked for us too. We both always shared anyways so we figured why not.

Watching pornography is seeing women as subjects, objects and animals. I hate how the porn discussion is so often about how it affects a man and maybe his wife, when the people in porn matter and God commanded us to selflessly love them. Not watch them demeaned and dehumanized and derive pleasure from it.
The primary evil in porn is to the user, as with prostitution. Of course prostitutes (I shall use the term for both.) also suffer as any sinner does but she nonetheless leads the, usually men, into the sin. As always we should seek their redemption and offer forgiveness.

What Matt described towards the end when he said while having great moments but feeling sad at the same time is the meaning of the part in the prayer that says " After This Our Exile". Hi Matt, as I watched this live I was wanting to get your comment on it so I’m very glad you’ve done this video.
There is a bit more there where a couple of the hosts actually get into disagreement about how a wife should address the issue of a husband looking at porn. I’d love to hear your comments on that bit as well.
The whole segment started with a viewer question asking for resources for porn recovery and I was jumping out of my seat hoping they would recommend Covenant Eyes and your channel. Unfortunately they did not, but I think it would be nice for DW viewers to know about those resources especially with this discussion still fresh on people’s minds.
Another interesting aspect of the later conversation was how the room seemed to be split with the Catholics saying wives should expect their husbands to remain chaste where everyone else downplayed the severity of pornography. It really highlighted the difference in theologies where Catholics believe holiness is expected (and necessary for salvation), but Protestants don't think holiness can be expected of the average man. And as a result, they all provided a subtle defense of pornography, on the basis of its prevalence and ease of access. Really goes to show that, while our judgement won't include a theology exam, our beliefs influence how we approach sin and our willingness to participate in it.

@@BrewMeister27 good observation! I agree. Also if you notice in particular Matt Walsh he will not speak about other women dirty. Like terms as ‘she’s hot’ or the jokes they made ‘let me rewind that sexscene’. It shows great character and respect to his wife.
My husband is the same way and honestly when they say men will look at other women and we shouldn’t make a big deal about it, I don’t agree. My husband has no wandering eyes or even has the desire to do so. He’s committed to me and will always act proper out of respect for me wether I’m with him or not. Men absolutely can be good upstanding moral people and I think it’s more harmful to say ‘those poor men can’t control themselves’. Like Matt Frad said. A manly man will not allow degeneracy because a real masculine man understands and upholds strong morality!

It infuriates me that they are still talking about pornography as solely being for men. I have a testimony of freedom from pornography and this conversation, whilst helpful and I agree with many points, is SO isolating for the women that I now work with who are seeking out help but constantly come across stuff like this. I think it also shows a REAL unawareness of pornography which has gone beyond just naked women creating content for men... Incest and teen pornography are gaining popularity.

You are not alone, I know women who have struggled with pornography as well. It always infuriated me when in his sermon a man who say, “those men who struggle with porn, and the women who struggle with shopping”. I’ve heard that way too many times. It needs to be clear that porn is a temptation for everybody, not only men.
@@SJFoss Yes, I am now a recovery coach for women with Naked Truth Project and work with women who are fighting the battle against pornography and every one of them feels intensified shame because of the way it is/isn't spoken about as female issue!
@@bethany3914 I understand what you are saying but I'm sure the vast majority of cases are men. also, you can always ask to go on podcasts yourself and speak about these issues and push the narrative into a fairer light. complaining about a thing won't fix it, be more proactive. And Candace and the two Catholics seemed to agree against some of what the others were saying. It was very interesting to watch. Love to hear your take on the rest of it.

Thanks Matt. My struggle as a Protestant is that there isn't like "official teaching of the Protestant Church" about these issues, so when temptation hits, it's too easy to just go with the liberal view for a few minutes and think "I can't know for sure if it's wrong anyway". Trying to research Catholicism, at least you know what you believe about these things.
hey fellow Protestant. I actually think the Catholic view on this is what you're looking for. I don't think this is the best place to look, as I can almost always find something seriously wrong in what Matt says - like the quip about modesty in this video, implying that women are leading men into sin if the men decide to *abuse them* by using them for lust.
Anyways, you want Theology of the Body Institute and the Ask Dr. Christopher West podcast. That's where you'll find all the answers and more importantly, all the reasons why.
@@josephbrandenburg4373 Women can lead men into sin through their clothing choices and the rest. That is Catholic doctrine. That does not mean the man should do so but does not excuse the woman. It is called scandal.

Edit: as for why it's an appalling thing to suggest: saying that a woman is leading a man to sin because he can see her body (and imposing on her an obligation to cover it) is ultimately placing the blame on the body for being good. There are contexts in which it's fair to criticize people for how they dress, but it's never fair to say that she is to blame for other people's sin.
Remember, God made the body. So blaming the body is blaming God. What God made is good. Perhaps the woman us guilty of mistreating the good thing in how she portrays it, but she's not responsible for how anyone else treats it. How could she be?

Thank you for the ingenuity to create this source to directly combat the damage being caused by pornography. Also, for speaking reason and understanding into the topic. Bringing free will back into a human being’s life is holy work.
I've heard the brother's keeper theory. I disagree. I don't think a woman should dress for the purpose of being provacative and expect respect, but lustful men are lustful regardless of what a woman does or doesn't wear, and he needs to rule his own body. It's this brother's keeper theory that has women wearing impracticle, hot, uncomfortable clothing in various groups. And because the groups that wear them originate from lustful men's doctrine of women being their brother's keeper, it's those very groups that have multiple wives, underage wives, adulterers, fornicators, and men that molest underage girls. Being their brother's keeper doesn't prevent these men's lustful behavior, including scrutinizing and fantasizing about women, it only oppresses the women.

Glad to see your clear charity towards our sisters at the 8:40ish mark. Our societies are generally broken, women, girls, and yes men and boys too, cannot dress in a way that will solve this issue, the Taliban in Afghanistan have shown it is not a complete answer even when backed by extreme violence. It's a bigger problem, hardened hearts objectifying men and women.

My theory about this is that we need to distinguish between the issue of modesty for women and the issue of lust for men, they’re very closely related but addressing them as the same problem seems to be a logistical mistake.
100% agree……. One is a distinctively serious sin, the other one concerns the dignity of the human body and I would argue really isn’t that serious of sin. The human body is beautiful after all and we should not be told we are “causing” another to sin. That takes autonomy away from the actual sinner.

We may be momentarily titillated by an attractive nude form, woman or man, all of us, however it does not take away the responsibility of the viewer. There are many examples of nudity in real life that shouldn’t be shocking or offensive because the human body ISNT shocking or offensive. That’s puritanism sneaking in

I’m the type of person who stops watching porn and solved it by actually doing something about it. Most times many people watch porn because they crave sex and if that’s the case then instant cure have sex it worked for me (no promises it will work), sure I still have some kinks but I haven’t watch porn since. The only criticism I will give porn for teens and adults is it creates a unrealistic expectation of sex. I had it and it wasn’t as good as I hoped but I still enjoyed it so to all the young adults if you struggle with porn in your 20s maybe it’s time to have sex and get rid of some of those unrealistic expectations because when you have sex and realise you’re over blowing how good it is you will stop because you don’t want to be disappointed in sex.

Hey Matt, there was a part of their conversation where they talked about men and women looking at porn. Ben kept insisting that an overwhelming majority of people who watch porn are men. I have seen a statistic that says something along the lines of for people over the age of 30 the breakdown is around 90% men and 10% women while people under 30 it is more 60% and 40%. Do you know where this data comes from? I would like to find the actual source!

I’d like to offer my two cents as well…We live in a world that is highly pornographic and emotionally driven…and when I say “pornographic” let me explain. “Pornography”, to me, is EXACTLY what we promote, NOT sex. “Sex”, in its fullness, is always inclusive of the biological principle because it’s through that that sex is figured out and defined. Without the biological principle we are simply left with emotions, sensations, intimacy, affection, intercourse, body parts, and a generation of people having great sex (hopefully, lol) but with no fruit to bear (children). THIS, at the core, is what porn is.
Porn takes elements of sex, enhances them for pleasure’s sake with no focus on the reproductive function even though the reproductive function is ALWAYS at the core (& climax) of the whole activity. This is pretty much what drugs are. Hard drugs/controlled substances are usually made by removing the healthy content originally attached to it and enhancing the part(s) of it that simply make people feel good. THAT is what we’ve done to sex.
I hate cigar smoke i feel so bad for Ben Shapiro ugh.. Candace Owens. She spoke in a video alluding to the theory that Andrew Tate is not guilty all bc women decided....to sell their bodies. It's sick, shaming and degrading. With a little bit of research....she could see that those women were coerced. Andrew Tate even boasted about how they never were allowed out. The women weren't even involved in porn before. So let's not give Andrew Tate the benefit of the doubt when in multiple interviews he's admitted to what he's done..so why blame the woman? Why? She has such a huge platform. Yet she chose to victim shame and blame just because they made the poor decision to trust Andrew Tate..

@@josephbrandenburg4373 I don’t recommend this movie, but ‘Get revenge’ (the scenario I was referring to) also in the ‘one day at a time 1975’ had a similar scenario for the daughter but her boyfriend was asking for sex. It happens a lot in media and in general.

I think it's really manipulative for people to say "if you really loved me you'd do..." so it would be odd to me that anyone could portray it positively.

Sometimes in other shows and media they make this a ‘happy ending’ even though there is definitely corecion. Young love doesn’t need to be that way
It's a sad fact that we now live in an attention economy. If you're not getting attention, your economics suffer, or so it seems. This may explain why people feel the need to step it up and show a little more, be a little sassier and so forth. Maybe it's the economics of some modern females who wants to live that Sex in the City lifestyle?

This entire conversation needs to be aimed at men too, you’re entirely focusing on women as if they are the only ones creating lust in others eyes (which is a false dichotomy btw). But I would argue there are tons of “thirst traps” posted by men too on instagram where I’m like woah.. I gotta chill lol. There are men who post alluring things too. In general I’m usually pretty good at not dehumanizing a person, but to act like women are not tempted by lust constantly would be a flat out lie.

It's a good thing that I'm 65 and too old to have to tell my kids "absolutely no" you can't go sleep over your friend's for the weekend. Only because I already have knowledge that the kids 99.9% of the time will lie to their parents about what the curriculum is going to be at the sleep over.

You may not want to live in some society because of it being too modest and strict in it sensibilities and attitudes, but sometimes those are necessary to keep evils in check. Would you rather live like a Victorian-era individual but with the majority of our scientific and technological advancements or in a world like ours that is becoming more and more openly depraved, while such depravity is often praised by society? You may not like a woman's ankle being viewed as scandalous, but isn't that the lesser evil that might give society a chance?
In fact, I think--while it may contribute to increased suicide rates--Japan's culture of shame seems likely to make up a good share of the things keeping crime rates low, generally speaking.
This is a vastly inadequate definition of pornography, and one instance where it could well be in the eye of the beholder. As a heterosexual man, I can certainly appreciate the beauty of Michaelangelo's David, though I imagine this sculpture would have a different effect on me if I were gay.
Secondly, I'm not sure you're using the terms "hardcore" and "softcore" as they're generally understood. I was under the impression that softcore porn implied nudity with no explicit sex, and could also include the kinds of simulated sex scenes you might see in a mainstream movie. Whereas hardcore porn depicts actual unsimulated sexual activity. To my knowledge, the definition of these terms hasn't changed.

There are a number of arguments for "modest" clothing (in the sense you imply) -- but it should never place the burden of men's sin on the woman's shoulders. That does nothing but heap shame onto her because of something she should never be responsible for.
15:48 you're getting it closer to right here... although I think it's rather an affront on her dignity to suggest that there is never a context in which people can expect others to treat their bodies with dignity.
You won't accuse a woman of being immodest in a gynecologist's office- fair enough- but you're missing something really important that these women are saying when they "don't understand their dignity" - the way _she_ sees it is that the people who objectify her are the ones who don't understand her dignity, and that she shouldn't have to be afraid of people doing that to her. What's so wrong about wanting to live in a world where you're as safe everywhere as you are in a doctor's office?
There's definitely a lot of people who take advantage, or lie. There's people who just want to sensationalize and people who only want to feel the cheap thrill of exhibitionism. There's still others who are just trying to gain money and fame. But underneath it all, there's a really important desire that these people have that is being stifled by all the fakers, the liars, the perverts and the prudes. Women want to live in a world where they don't have to feel like sex objects all the time.
As a fellow art lover I agree. I simply love beauty and I love the human body and I could never see it as wrong. However unfortunately some people are pervs so sometimes I feel like I have to be careful who I show my body to. I dress modestly, but I’ll wear a bikini at the beach. Sometimes I feel a little odd but I figure I’m at the beach.. it’s an odd game, I would definitely like to say that if someone is lustful, it is their own fault. They didn’t actually condemn or mention the men who watch the porn, all they did is talk about the people who make it. Anyway women don’t make it in a vacuum, there is always men in porn too or behind the scenes. So maybe daily wire should condemn the actual users of it next time instead of just the producers of an extremely profitable item. I’m not condoning porn, but I am saying that there is a HUGE market for it. These people are providing a service. Do I think it should be illegal? Yes. But still, there are millions of clients. Maybe try telling these addicts why it is bad for them and the victims in porn, too, daily wire.

It isn't universal, that's why. In ancient Greece it was pretty much the opposite. Ancient Rome saw the male nude as befitting depictions of great heroes or deities. Both societies treated the female nude with a greater degree of prudery (or modesty if you prefer). It wasn't until the innovative portrayal of Aphrodite attempting to cover herself at her bath that the female nude entered Greek art, and from there it slowly gained wider acceptance - but women were never depicted nude without some kind of "excuse" like a scene in a myth, or a goddess, or something similar. Well, some of the explicit Roman "art" found in Pompeii showed prostitutes doing their work - interestingly, though, even prostitution, in Roman art, was often depicted with the breasts covered. Men, on the other hand, were a suitable subject for art without any kind of excuse, the "Kourous" was an extremely important aspect of ancient Greek art. They didn't really survive into the Roman period, though.
Throughout the Renaissance, the widespread rediscovery of ancient Greek and Roman art led to an explosion in artistic interest, once again, in the male nude. The female form wasn't really regarded until later, after the Baroque period had ended (during the time of impressionists and realists, academic artists, and the like, from arounf 1800 onwards).
As far as fashion is concerned, there have been plenty of times in history where men were expected to wear whatever was suitable for their work, often removing clothing that got in the way. Women, in Western societies, were often expected to cover up much more than the men.
Outside of Europe, though, I don't think the idea holds up at all. There are tribes all over the world where neither sex wears much, or where only the men go about naked and the women wear skirts. Many pre-modern societies associate nudity more with childhood than with sex, because they let their children run around naked until puberty. The Japanese were perfectly comfortably watching Sumo Wrestling, but almost all of their art depicts women wearing kimonos or similar. Depictions of male nudity are really more common in art before the last century. Modern Japanese art, obviously, has followed the same trend as the West.

But the truth is everyone admires a beautiful and sculpted man, think of the “David” in Italy one of the most beautiful sculptures of all time. I didn't really disagree with him on this point because he was trying to define what is and isn't art (because he seems to think that art and porn are mutually exclusive categories, which I think is possibly true - it's at least a useful distinction). But his definition is wanting, in that a lot of serious art that is intended to be art would probably be considered pornographic to him (for example, any art-nude photographer). It's also lacking because there's no way to judge the intention of the work by looking at it. In reality, the judgement consists of _projecting_ your suspicion onto the artist or photographer and then making a judgement based on that. The same is true of all the "she doesn't respect herself" stuff. Matt is projecting his opinion of her self-presentation onto her and then judging her for his _own_ prudery or lust (whichever of the two is being provoked).
I think he either needs a definition that can define pornography based on the content of the image, in a definite and exact way (like the Miller Test); or he needs to provide some sort of standard for discerning the motives of the producer. In reality, I think he draws the line at the intentions of both the producer _and_ the viewer, but he doesn't say this. But when you include the intentions of the viewer, you can't blame women anymore for being "immodest", and you have to take a lot more responsibility for _how you look at people_, rather than focusing exclusively on _what_ you look at.
It's probably not right to quote out-of-context like this, but I really think it applies here: "To the pure, all things are pure; but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure. Indeed, both their minds and their consciences are defiled." (Titus 1:15, BSB). My opinion is that pornography isn't a thing, it's an action. Sometimes it's a cooperative action between a pornographer and viewer. Sometimes the viewer is the only one _doing_ the pornography when he treats a woman as porn by, say, implying that she doesn't respect herself when she dresses in a way that makes _him_ feel justified in reacting lustfully. Sometimes it's only the pornographer, as when someone stumbles across a site that shows niche stuff that normal people are disgusted by (but the people who made them had pornographic intentions). And this is why a SEARS catalog can be a porno mag in the hands of a teenage boy, and in his sister's hands it's just an advertisement for much-needed underwear.
I think this definition is far better because it respects the dignity of the person more, by placing most of the responsibility on the individual, rather than allowing any room for blaming others, or blaming one's circumstances. It's not a system of rules but a call to a higher degree of individual virtue. It can be combined with avoidance, but it never allows you to fall into the trap of thinking avoidance is _enough_ because it isn't. After all, if we take things too literally, then we can't use Matt. 5:28 as an argument against porn- because a woman is not a picture of a woman. But if we look closer and read it again "whoever looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart" -- and then again at Matt. 15:16-20 (I will only quote v.19) " For out of the heart come evil thoughts, ... adultery, sexual immorality..." So avoidance isn't enough. Jesus wants our hearts to be filled with good treasure (Mt. 12:35), he's not only interested in outward obedience. There's an entire chapter in Matthew dedicated to lambasting the Pharisees for that.
