I called Strickland in Mississippi years ago and they informed me the tonic was no-longer produced which meant they did not know the plant origin of the fragrance. The scent is unique, one of a kind. Tonic usage followed hair-wash usage of their medicated shampoo. Thank-you for your interest Ms. Diamond. Blu

@@DiamondInTheRoughA1 You do know this was originally made for DOGS....look it up...since 1920 it was made for dogs and it says African Americans used it for their scalp and it took off in the community
@@anneloren3586 Yes I do. Before that it was used in the farm industry; pine tar was used straight out of the can. Oil was added as a carrier @3% per volume
I thought I was the only one that noticed that the pine tar is missing from the new glovers. List time I bought some, I was very disappointed , I stopped using it because immediately, I knew it wasn't going to work and it didn't. Good that you are writing them and tell them that nobody is going to buy their crap until they put the pine tar back and just leave well enough alone.
I love the old version, much better most folks back in the day had much thicker hair from the older version. The new one is crap to light and watery. Granny use to mix Vaseline with the old one and braid our hair . this is what made our beautiful black hair thick. When companies change products you don't get the real results. Thank you queen for info. much respect to you.
Yep Thanks SweetOneLove. Even the old Sulphur 8 was better. That's why I reserched the pine tar and add that to the "new" one. Please check out my Pine Tar Update video. Im giving some pine tar away.
Yep. Notice, too that they changed the 'original' Sulphur8?? It was THE cream to use when brading hair back in the 80s. I wish I had stocked up on it then. Pls see my update vid on Glovers. I'm giving away some Pine Tar to mix with the "new" Glovers--since the new does not have pine tar in it.
Queen Diamondln, I truly believe , from the wicked wh corporation changing our product is the reason most black folks hair is so thin. They never change their product? YOU FEEL ME ? Our products were very few what we had back in the day, when they seen how nice and thick our hair is they CHANGE OUR SH-T to corrupted weak product that thins out our hair. check this out; look at the old afro sheen ultra sheen commercials; soul train dancers from soul train OMG everybody black had edges and THICK THICK HAIR !WE as black folks has abused our hair so badly , we don't have these original products to help heal our hair anymore. 40s 50s 60 70s our black hair was like wool and thick, now you can count the hair on our heads now. omg. the little products we use back in the day are no longer here anymore and it grew our hair like tree branches full of beautiful leaves it was I guarantee you our hair would grow back quickly. im so disappointed in so many product that is quote on quote for our hair. because it says for our hair, trust me. IT ANIT LOL. back in the day when our mom's and grannies and grandma's and that big comb would comb our beautiful coils and no breakage.
That, sweet oneloves, is why we need to 1) unplug from their products and create our own that will support our hair. It is no secret why the hair glue-- is taking our scalps alive. Tempest Vaughn, Naomi Campbell are examples of products bad for us. I think sometimes, that these products are created for our demise in mind.
@@sweetoneloves6811 You right! Aggh! I STILL remember that big ACE comb, with the big teeth on one end and the smaller ones on the other. Mama could whip us good with that comb-- they never broke! lol. I found ACE in Chicago, about 12 years ago.. I bought 8 of them... gave them away as Kwanzaa gifts. I still use them as detanglers, on prewash days.
I'm in Alabama and I just got a bottle from a black hair care chain called "beauty and beyond". The bottle I got is the new formula. If I had watched this video before I bought it, I would have looked more to see if I could find the older stuff. Companies are finding ways to make things smaller and less potent yet they keep going up on the prices... I guess I could check at a farm supply store to see if they carry it. Then again, they might have another formulation for animals... Didn't Mane 'n Tail also start out as a product for horses?
yep. it was a product used on show horses. Check put my followup video on pine tar. 'Bring back Father Johns, Musterole & all that stanky bad tasting stuff that kept us alive and healthy lol!
Thanks to all who viewed and liked this video. I gathering supplies for a video about my Aurevedic oil mix. Waiting for the weather to break... we get two or three days of 70+ weather, then its back to 40degrees... BTW the old Glovers company (Clay, in NYC) was bought out by Strickland in MS
Thank you for pointing out the difference. My granny is from MS so I know all about Glovers but didnt realize the formula changed but I knew the name changed. My friend is from NY and she had never heard of Glovers.
Thank you for such a well informed review. If you should ever receive an answer for the the new formula change from the company, please do keep us posted. I'd like to know what excuse(s) are used to justify taking out the main active component.
Thanks C. The reason probably is "cost" and probably 'copyright of the original formula' ; though the small amount used (3%) is small and shows what a little of an item goes a long way. Im searching out the pine tar straight in order to work with that as a replacement. The Original Glovers formula was the biz--NESS! it worked.
Ic c, Thank you for viewing. The removal of pine tar has changed the formulation. I with the help of another viewer found out the differences.... see Roz's comments , below. I did not receive an answer(as of yet) from the new company.
Thanks sister I remember Glover’s back in the day thanks sister I remember glovers back in the dayS,dog Maine where I come from that’s what they called it but it worked trust me it does
I would love to know where to buy the old formula. I grew up with that mixed in royal crosn6hakr dressing. I have searched for it for years. Thank you for sharing.
diamond, I used to mix my Glover's with my blue magic and even when I got caught in the rain my style would be fit. meaning, naturally soft beautifully curly hair. it took only a small amount to a new jar of blue magic. thick 4c jet black natural hair & brows was my sassyness. Now that my neighborhood store went out of business , I can't find the original. I live in the South. in fact about 20 min from the gulf. can't find it.do you know where it can be found? this stuff is great for 4c natural hair. thanks girl 🙋p.s. use baby shampoo, blue magic& very small amount of Glover's original. I promise you'll be surprised.
Thank you FT!. I have purchased the "new" formula at the local beauty supply companies here in Ohio. You can also purchase it on Amazon. I purchased the original (not floral or lemon scented) type. Im seeking out pine tar to add a bit to the 'new' formulation to kick it up to the old standard. It is too bad that they changed it.
@@DiamondInTheRoughA1 Thank you for doing this video..I read some reviews on amazon for the Glovers who said they noticed the product had changed and wasnt as effective. There is an old shampoo "Frenchies" that had pine tar in it.. I found the last bottle sold at my local beauty supply store. Real concentrated, at 10 times the concentration
Thank you for sharing this video I thought I ordered the wrong glovers on Amazon because it was not the same color or smell and thank you again for being detailed about which ingredient was missing….wish me luck I’m going to do research to find out if the old version is still out there lol 😂
Try the BB pine tar but I mix mine with light sulfur 8. It's close enough and order pine tar or birch tar shampoo. I use Neutrogena coal tar shampoo my hair is growing.
The pine tar removal is a biggie - pine tar really helps multiple scalp conditions. I wouldn't buy it without the pine tar you might as well use Sulfur 8 as a leave in scalp grease.
I used it years ago and loved it. But I can only find the new version and I am in the south, Texas as a matter of fact. So I believe they only make the new version.
Thanks, YES, both have a strong odor. It usually takes me two good washings to kill the smell. First wash, I dilute my shampoo and work it through my scalp and hair; and let it sit, rinse, and wash again. I deep condition afterwards. A little smell lingers, but by the 1st day after washing, no smell is left. I just deal with it and keep it moving, stay in my little cubicle and have a dish of lavender on my desk... lol
That stinky shyt grew the hell out of my hair ! I grew up using it. my grandma would mix it with blue magic Grease, or Vaseline whichever was available.
i would add some pine tar, petroleum ( which is vaseline) to the new glovers mane formula with the sulfur. i looked at amazon. they also have a glovers mane with salisylic ( not sure of the spelling) acid in it. i'm going to use sulfur 8, dax with pine tar oil amd mix those two. B&B also has a pine tar grease so it you mix sulfur 8 and the B&B pine tar grease your getting the same thing i would think. thank you for the video.
Leave out the Dax and Vaseline…. It’s in the Bronner pine tar grease anyway. I’ve reformatted the sulfur 8 as well…adding more sulfur ,menthol and Ayurvedic herbs 🌿 ✊🏾

I live in South Carolina and I am 49 years old and my mother used that when I was younger she mixed it with royal crown and white rose hair grease and my hair is natural long no other chemicals those new companies are trying to make money I tried glovers 3 years ago and my mother told me don’t put that on her hair because it doesn’t come in those varieties of scents lol but she never rinsed mines out older people use it for the dogs like the lady mentioned and you could smell it for a long time my mother always order older magazines with products in them I will check out my local feed and animal supply store fir example my neighbor is a gardener he use the same seed from Walmart and one from the old feed and animal store Walmart one didn’t grow and the feed store one did and made a beautiful crop so be mindful of these products I grew up on white rose, royal crown, sulfur8, vigorous, glovers 5 stars to this lady
Somebody's WATCHING Me I add 2%pine x by the size of ounces. Convert the ounces to ml. Then take 2% of that amount. That’s the amount of ml of pine tar to add
Now I know I’m not tripping. This new product doesn’t even smell the same. My mom use to use this on me so I wouldn’t get wring worm and my hair was the longest in my life while I was using this as a child. We want the old formula back. Who do I need to email???

I think the absence of pine tar might involve the fact that old pine tar formulations contained phenols and some carcinogenic compounds. Research pine tar. There were some FDA concerns about it.
Thanks, Roz. I saw some of those concerns as well. I just read an article over the safeness of pine tar. in pine tar soaps. From what I understood, coal tar has some of those carcinogenic compounds probably the result of the high temperature needed to produce pine tar--similar to the FDA warning about consuming meats grilled to get that "char" taste. I m looking to track down an article that compared pine and coal tars. The outcome was that the amount (+/-1-3%) was so small that the effect was negligible. I agree that any effect is important. I need to redig up that article and present a response to it. I found the pine tar , and is use is the same as what Glovers Mange was used for--
DiamondIn TheRough Thanks for your reply. What I learned was that it depended on the manner in which the pine tar was produced. If it is produced exposed to air, creosote is a by product which can be carcinogenic. There are other means of producing pine tar now that avoid the carcinogenic risks. Let me know what else you discover. PS Still a fan of Glover’s!!!👍
@@DiamondInTheRoughA1 the FDA are two sides to the same coin..I always try to keep that it mind, when something is approved or not approved by them, thankyou again for the video and your research
It worked. They change formulas that work all the time. Carcinogenic ingredients are on cleaning, food, and personal care products. FDA approval Olestra which causes uncontrollable diarrhea.

@@DiamondInTheRoughA1 vigorol was a mild relaxer. it was for the hair and not the scalp. i use to use that too. you would leave it on for about 30 minutes. it would relax the curl in your hair enough that you would not need to straighten your hair with a hot comb but not too straight like a cream relaxer.

I mix mine with Royal Crown hair grease. Same way my granny used to do it!!
Chronically Real YEP. I think adding it to an oil and applying to scalp thins it out a bit... that’s what folks seem to be doing 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🥰
Old school yes! Mom use to mix it with Dixie peach hair grease...
yessssss! i loved the smell of dixie peach. my mom used it too.

The Original Glovers formula was the biz--NESS! it worked.

Thank you! But the old one smells so strong.
I just deal with it and keep it moving, stay in my little cubicle and have a dish of lavender on my desk... lol

i would add some pine tar, petroleum ( which is vaseline) to the new glovers mane formula with the sulfur. i looked at amazon. they also have a glovers mane with salisylic ( not sure of the spelling) acid in it. i'm going to use sulfur 8, dax with pine tar oil amd mix those two.
