How to Make Your Own Silicone Slab Mold

- How I made my own silicone slab mold for cold process soap-making using Soft 107-Purple Catalyst (for soaps and candles) from hobbysilicone.com. Directions for calculating the amount of silicone needed for your project can be found on their website as well.
The size/shape/texture of your canvas or item that you hot-glue to your foam board will be how your soap turns out.
Watch the video all the way through carefully guys...... She actually does give a description of how she made the cardboard mold for the silicone.... Thanx for the great vid!
😭😌😌😌 lifesaver Have been looking for a week for a method to make a mould simple and quick enough at a beginner level
This was awesome!!!! Thank u for sharing i cant wait to get products to make my own custom silicon molds and do some resin crafting!!! Thanks again for sharing!
I absolutely love this! This is what I was wanting to do once I got further into making CP Soap! So glad I ran across this! It was very interesting to watch! I hope it has been going well for your Soap Making as well! :)
Youre a very clever lady. I was wondering how the hell i was going to make a mold. Now i know thank you so much
Thanks for showing the technique. I've used Smooth-On however never thought about using a canvas. Since canvas is not necessarily a smooth surface does the mold come out smooth?
Love DIY projects, so many uses for silicone molds. Thank you.
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching! :)
Go ahead and share! I posted it to help whoever wanted to make them. :)
Sarah I'm assuming it is more economical to make silicone molds and wooden support boxes then it is to purchase them?
u can use the hardware store 100% silicone tubes.. not as easy to use but not as expensive, and add cornstarch to it ... i believe it was 1 to 2 cornstarch to silicone ratio...there is a vid somewhere of it, lol... but this a really pretty mold!!! and a professional job ... awesome vid ... thank u for your knowledge ... happy soaping! [ps, I use box's and bags and get 110% happy results with my soaps!! 😜😉💙
Watching it now...if you dont mind I would love to share this youtube link with my other soaping groups....you are a prize thank you so much.....gonna save save save so much thanks to you and this looks like so much fun...
thanks *so much* for putting this up - this video has solved many, many problems for me.
I am going to need just a little more mixed to do what I want - can you tell me approximately how much of the Soft 107 product you bought to do just this one mold? thanks!!!
That is beautiful. Love the color. thank you.
Cool video. If I could do that with heat stable silicone, I'd be tempted to try it. I like CPOP soap.
Where are the videos you made of making soap with this mold? I looked for a couple but it goes from three years old videos to two years old videos, so I'm not sure if you just never filmed using it or if you have the title of those videos to see how it worked out
Excellent video, so easy to follow. Wondering, is the silicone heat resistant, so it can be used in the oven for CPOP? Thank You again.
Well.... the hard part is knowing what you used and how to actually make the mold you used...I'll check to see if you showed us how to make the mold you used for the box in another video. Ok...you kind of told us at the end. Thanks for being willing to share! Nice video.
You're very welcome! Also, remember that whatever you use as your mold "shaper" (in my case, a canvas and a foam board), the texture, size, etc. will translate to your silicone mold. So if you want a perfectly smooth mold, a canvas is probably not the way to go unless you smooth the texture with gesso or something similar. (Finely sanded wood block would work beautifully as well!)
hi, I really liked this. I was wondering if it would be cheaper to make my own mould rather than buying it and for how many batches you thing that would last.
Thanks and keep up the good work!
I really like this video. You made it look simple. Thanks.
Fantastic job !!
Hi Sarah, I just love what you do. On this video, i hear you saying that the part that creates the interior of your mold is made of canvas. What kind of canvas is that ? Is it smooth ? When i think of "canvas" i "see" a texture. What can i use ? I'm sorry my english is limited am i'm trying to understand the inside part of the old...
Is making your own molds much cheaper vs buying them? Im new to this and am just beginning to buy items for when I begin making soap at home. I could never purchase everything at once due to finances but if its cheaper to make the molds, Id love to know. Thanks so much!
Hi. I just found your video on making a soap mold. my question is (and I'm sorry if it's a silly question.) how did you make your poster board bend in a way to to create the crisp edges and corners? i am trying to make a small silicone mold but i am not sure how to make the part that holds the liquid silicone. Thanks for sharing your video with us.
Donna
Was it cheaper to make your own silicone and wooden mold than it would have been to buy one? Just wondering. 😊
You are a boss!
I love your work!
Wonderful, as always, and gorgeous color *hee*. Though, I wonder how many molds you get from buying one bottle (set) of stuff?
Came across your video when looking for mold remediation in my bathroom -- thought someone had come up with an idea for the bottom of my one-piece shower stall, but see it's for soap, which I have been wanting to take up as a hobby. So, Sarah, will probably be watching you again! 8^)
I know this is an old video but I have to make some of these and I’m confused on some parts of this. Do you mix both the purple bottles and the two other silicone bottles ALL together? Also do you know how big that poster board was ? I would really appreciate an answer, thanks.
You can buy these at Wal Mart. They are science fair boards and are thicker than normal poster board. Hope this helps.
hi! thanks for the video, This silicone can be used for the oven?.well I need to make a mold which serves for cooking bread
This was excellent! Thank you Sarah!
Great video!! Thank you so much for sharing. The mold looks great! :)
Awesome Thank you Question: Can this mold liner be used for Hot process soap??
How did you end up calculating how much silicone to buy and use for your mold?
Nativebeauti50 Usually, I have seen people fill the container with water first and determine how many ounces they need.
Great video, love how your mould came out, well done! :)
Good question! I haven't done CPOP yet, but I would contact the supplier and ask. They send a wonderful information packet with your order that has a lot of the specifications in it. (Of course, my son tossed mine out when he spilled milk on it... otherwise, I'd try looking it up in there.)
Your Keurig is blinking angrily at you, demanding water.

Wonderful! Thanks for sharing this with us
Hi. dear thanks for the nice video can we use this mold for baking
Very good, well done!!!
Great video
That was excellent!
Wonderful tutorial! Is it food grade?
For a long, skinny 6 lb loaf mold, is there a canvas that length out there or how do i modify a canvas?
Great Tutorial!
Thank you, Heather!
good work. how do u calculate how mutch to use?
HI thank you for your tutorials!!! i wanted to know how much of the silicone mix did you use for this size mold. i saw that you opened up 2 containers of the 2lbs kit. i want to buy it and not sure if i need to buy 2 2lbs kits or if one is enough. Thanks!
Just subtract the inner volume (for a box V = L x W x H) of the mould from the outer volume. It is likely that the uncured silicone rubber would be contained in a cylindrical form (such as a bucket). You can use the cylinder volume calculation (Pi x Radius x Radius x Height). and half the diameter of the narrowest part of the container and the estimated height (filled to approx 1" from the top) to work out the minimum requirement. It is of course advisable to have more at hand than the project requires.
OMG this is awesome. You should make these to sell, I would be a customer. Great job.
Where ,we can buy that silicon,
Does the canvas leave the inside of the newly-made mold smooth, or does it have a more textured finish? Thx.
see her reply to Thomasean below
Very good! Love it.
How many of this size mold are you able to make from one kit of silicone?
That is brilliant how much was the mixture?
hahaha i love the posterboard canvas box for yr mould ingenious love it :) and the wings an added bonus :) how much roughly are the ingredients silicon mix :) thanks :D
Loved this video tutorial....thanks so much for posting it. :)
Just wondering, did you buy 2 kits to make that one slab mold? And thank you for sharing this video!
Can you pour candle wax in silicone molds?
I liked that...thanks for the 'tutorial'.
Do you still use this mold ? did it have a smell or anything, very kool
Thank you...............That looked kind of easy.
Awesome! Thanks for the info!! Appreciate you sharing and teaching!! Hugz, Tree
Fab, thanks for the video.
Fyi love the color! :-)
How did you calculate how much of the raw materials you would need? Would you mind sharing the dimensions of your silicone slab mold? oh and what do you mean by a canvas? is that like an artist canvas board and where did you get that? thanks so much.
Here is the link to calculate the amount of materials you will need for your project: www.hobbysilicone.com/calculations.htm The artist canvas (just a regular painting canvas from Michael's) I used was 1.25" x 9" x 12", so that is the inside measurement of my mold (or the cavity measurement. The overall mold is about 1.75" x 10" x 13". Hope this helps!
this is great thanks!! Cant wait to do this!!!
How would I make a hard version of this? What kind of silicone would I need? I would greatly appreciate a response.
A hard version? As in "not-flexible"? Silicone probably wouldn't be the way to go then. Perhaps you might want to consider resin or another medium? (Acrylic might work also, depends on what it's for.)
hi
how much of the silicon stuff
do you use to make the mold
Awesome let us know about oven . Great job
How did you build your mold....
Great idea!
Thanks so much for sharing
isn't it just cheaper to buy those molds? I know that the silicon is expensive to buy so I was just curious!?
I've found that buying the silicone is cheaper than buying the molds. The molds can get pretty expensive.
Amy Sanders homemade silicone is cheap and easy. Look it up here on utube.
Amy Sanders my thoughts exactly
Thank you for posting !
Is it water proof?
Stupid but neccesary question: how does it smell? Is this something I need to do outside or with an open window?
It's really not bad, but with any silicone, I recommend working in a well-ventilated area. :)
Good Job.
Awesome video...thanks!!
how much did it cost to make?
Oh my gosh I would love to do this! You make it look so easy. I can just imagine the mess I would make, but if I can get it right, it would be so worth it. Thank you for the tips Sarah. If you get the chance, please stop by my channel sometime, we would love to see you there.
April @BigBlueDogSoaps
Thank you for sharing, it is a great video.
Sarah, how much do you charge for one of your molds like this? Thanks!
Hi Melody!
I actually don't make these to sell. It's kind of time/labor intensive and I like to focus more on the soaps than the molds. :) Thank you for watching, though!
That was smart.
Thank you for sharing!
Well done! :)
brilliant !
how many kilos are the tubs
Coolies!
Thank you for sharing. Liked to have detail info. pls.
do you have a video of you using this mold and un-molding it?
Hi Mary! I have a video of me using the mold here: Column Pour for the Soap Challenge Club- by Spicy Pinecone However, I haven't taken a video of unmolding yet. Hmm… will definitely keep that in mind! I cut it in the mold, then push up from the bottom and the bars pop right out. :)
Sarah Milroy Great video. You mentioned you were making a wooden box to support the sides but it looks like you didn't use it for this video. Did the sides stay up? Do you still need some "side support". Thanks.
CasitadeAli The sides stayed put without the additional support. :) If you want to move your mold, be sure to put something under it before you pour your soap, though. ;)
Thanks for your quick response. That's awesome. Great mold and great video. Thanks again.
I tried to email the copy to ask about the temps but it keeps coming back. Can some one plz try
excelenttttttttttttt Thanks
Thank you 😀😀😀😀😀😀
Five stars!!
Do you sell your stuff?
Wow Nice !!@
Smooth-on makes better stuff.......a vacuum chamber works good to get rid of the air bubbles.
Where we can buy silicon
You can find the link to the supplier I purchased from in the video description. Good luck with your mold making! ❤️
cool
I’m need size
how do you know how much you'll need?
skayc1 go to hobbysilicone.com and the directions for calculating how much you need for the mold that you want to make are on their website. I would buy plenty extra because once you finish your project you will probably want to make other molds or you could keep it handy so you can mold on the fly if you think of a new mold project.
dont use condensation cured silicone all those little air bubble stay in there
I know you commented long ago, but can you please explain what you mean by condensation cured silicone.
What kind should one buy that doesn't have to be degassed in a degasser please Steves Projects ?
I think you need to take some time and go to WoodPrix website to learn how to make it.
