- British punk band The Rings and their great, lone 1977 single "I Wanna Be Free" on Chiswick Records (NS-14). The group was fronted by Twink, drummer of such 60's psychedelic groups as The Pink Fairies and The Pretty Things.
Hey, thanks for the comments. Just glad you all got a kick out of my song/guitar playing. way back in 1977. Stay free!
One of my all time fave songs man. You rock!
..and I'm very glad got this single on vinyl
Brilliant single
My punk band in Detroit Michigan plays this now!! We love it!!
Stellar,you rock dude!
"I'm walking in my brown shoes
Just walking in my brown shoes
I'm knocking on your door
Just knocking on your door
I want a society
Where a man can be free
To be who he wants to be
And to see who he wants to see
If this ain't the solution
I'm sick of this prostitution
Of you..and...me
I wanna be free!"
I ti znas za njih? Mislio sam da samo ja znam u HR ko je Twink i The Rings. Pogle moje videe
a lot of great songs from that time .The energy was real .I sang along to this with a lot of punk rock stars . Still one of my all time favourite singles
Ya Dave our Crew carefree and wild singing this tune was fun and still a Huge memory for me.
Fantastic. I got the single in 77.
Brilliant in 77, and still brilliant!..... Just about my favourite punk/new wave single ever
Punk at his best, just blew me away

Love it - heard it at a Stranglers gig in '77
first time i heard this was on that odd certs comp w/skrewdriver, count bishops, motorhead, etc...awesome. turned lots of people onto this stuff: my friends, my wife, my kids hahaha
best punk song ever!!!
I listened to the song when i was 16 years old but brilliant still now!
Guitarist Alan Lee Shaw was in the mid 90s line-up of the Damned.
Great single. There aren't many from that era that hold up but this is a timeless one.
absolutely brilliant. top class stuff
The sleeve of this single was taken outside my uncle Ted's record shop in Camden Town, north London. It sounds nice and raw but won't give you salmonella!!!
One of my all time faves ,absolutely love it
Have the single.A member of the Rings went onto greater fame in the '80's.great bands like the straps, radiators, protex, vipers, the rivals, suburban studs, ignerents, ruefrex etc etc.dem were da days.
lightning in a bottle this tune...
Real punk rock,to the bone!! Old times the best!!
Now this is Good punk. Why not more-so much 70's punk weren't.

quality , simple and to the point, long live punk in our ageing bodies - CAN'T WAIT TIL 78;
It must've been a blast to have been around this scene when it was exploding.
It really was.
I don't know these guys but they ring a bell. Thumbs up!
I have this record! I love it...thanks
Reminds me of early Kinks when they were the best!
@alanleeshaw Chelsea 77 is the Greatest Single of 1977 and my all time Favorite. You are the Man you still are.

Alan Lee Shaw is one of the underrated guitarist from the British Punk movement. Him and the late Great Wilco Johnson were my favorites
Good stuff indeed!!
Anorher great punk tune that is not lost because of UA-cam!!
@alanleeshaw May I say The Maniacs and The Rings Kick some butt back in 77 and thank you for making some Kick ass Rock and Roll
i met one of the guys in london in a vinyl store!!
Punk sei Dank. Großartige Mugge.
Twink brought me here and I am gráteful
Great song. I played in a band that sometimes covered it in late 77 and '78.
it was a Chiswick Chartbusters comp. i think it was something like 'Odd certs, dead somethings and something'...
it had motorhead, count bishops, skrewdriver, the rings, etc on it....sorry took so long to get back to you.

Yes indeed!!
I like the guitar tone
Also loved the Pink Fairies single- which I also no longer own - of "Reading between the Lines". The Rings single was also on a Chiswick Compilation album, if I'm not mistaken...
Shlongy The two disc Chiswick Records Story is a sweet comp for sure
Twink was also Elton Motello's drummer for a while, and he tried to play lead guitar with Hawkwind but he got the boot. Anyway, this song is absolutely marvellous!
Love this and Automobile. Fuckin' quality.
Brilliant! Heard today on Sugg’s trunk of punk on Craig Charles
automobile is a cracking tune as well...anything else out their for this great band?

The beat
First discovered this song on the Chiswick comp Long Shots Dead Certs And Odds On Favorites. Never even heard of this group while listening the first time...and then second song on side two. Wow!! Let's take the needle up and hear this again. Wow!! It's really that good. Then had to buy the single to check if it sounded better than the lp pressing. Alas, not much difference. On a short list of overlooked, under appreciated great punk songs from 1977? You bet, mate!
Wow...fucking class!!
Top choon
I think there may be two drummers one of 'em was Twink from the Pink Fairies
still got the 45
Brill!
where is Twink?
GR8
ALTERA HISTORIA DU ROCK
Twink rules - the true Punk whereas Syd Barrett was the Psychedelic Punkaroo.
RIP Syd.

You can't find anything about this "one single wonder" band anywhere...and I don't have the record anymore...sadly. Used to play the shit out of this back in 78..79
Loads of info on the net, check out The Rings Facebook page.
Radiators, eh? Top band!
LISTEN TO THE DRUG SQUAD KIDS
punk
Thanks for your music "John" ..still got some of your vinyl."Think Pink"is an all time classic.you're somewhat a legend in your own right.Hope you find peace with your new found conversion to Islam.Me personally am suspicious to all religion. We're all part of the great cosmic recycle bin, nothing more nothing less.
@PKPurvis .... of course...
produced by martin gordan ex sparks radio stars.
He lives in an old Mill with his wife. Not sure about a doughnut shop though...
Anyone know where Twink is these days? We were friends in the early 1990's when he lived in New York.. I remember the CD he had just released was Mr. Rainbow. Last I heard he was in Essex.. but that was a while ago
@iqaluitdog try mp3ify you should be able to do it from there
isn't alan Lee Shaw playing Guitar on this one. I think Rod Ladder was the drummer too right? Could Someone please post Chelsea 77 by the Maniacs
Automobile is also good
But this is a masterpiece.
Hard evidence of the link between the Pink Fairies and punk, as if "Teenage Rebel" wasn't enough (compare "Teenage Rebel" and the Damned's "New Rose").
You got it Smoke!
