Karl Böhm gives his beloved musicians a big smile at 0:40, quickly followed by a super serious look, and as the music begins (0:47), the expression on his face is totally priceless! Incredible to believe that Karl Böhm is 83 years of age here. He clearly shows his passion, enthusiasm, expertise and knowledge of every part of the music here in this concert, without even requiring or looking at the score. He occasionally gives a little dance while conducting, and energetically lives through the music. How about the massive respect and adoration this man was given from the appreciative audience and orchestra! He came back to the podium SEVEN TIMES, I've never seen that happen before or since!
There is a very good reason the crowd roared and clapped for such a long time. A stupendous performance, full of poetry and drama and electrical bolts as the piece ended. One of the best performances. Bohm never disappoints.
This violist was always Karl Böhm’s favourite member of the orchestra, always sharing a hug and a word after a concert! I wonder if anyone out there can identify the violist?
@R G I don't know which 'violist' you are referring to, but if you are referring to the 'second violinist' at about 8:12, that is principal second violinist Wilhelm Hübner, whom I believe was also chairman of the Philharmonic in the 70s. You would see him speak on behalf of the orchestra near the end of the 1974 New Year's Concert.
thank you for posting! I saw KB with VPO Schubert 2 and 9 thanks to my dad one of the great partnerships of music history and life! Leonard Bernstein and other celebs were several rows behind me.
I have to agree, Karl Böhm is my favourite conductor of all time! His passion, knowledge and interpretation of everything classical is truly legendary! RIP Maestro Karl 🙏.
It is a "sanctuary" in a different dimension from Karajan, who was a lifelong ally. As with Karajan, the performance of the stage performance and the recording session, including the fact that the improvisation is attached, the human nature appears in the performance situation with the complete secret conductor in the stage performance.
Absolutely. Those who want those desiccated HIP performances can have them. This is ideal for me, although I would recommend hearing Klemperer as well. And I will take the Brucknerian Adagio such as Bernstein gives us for the slow movement of the Ninth Symphony, thank you very much. Those late 19th century conductors such as Bulow, Nikisch, etc., with some hindsight, knew what these works were really about, even if Beethoven didn't always indicate it. Brahms actually designed his Violin Concerto after this late 19th century model of the Beethoven Violin Concerto.
Interesting. I seriously love Kleiber's VPO recording, but I cannot say so much from his live performances. I consider his 1978 live recording (Kleiber in Chicago) good, kind of disbalanced and quite fast, but not better than this extraordinary performance of Karl Böhm. Now my top Greatest Performances of Beethoven's 5th Symphony is: 1. Karajan in Moscow (1969) 2. Furtwängler WWII (1943) 3. Furtwängler (1954) 4. Karajan (1988) 5. This one! Böhm (1977) 6. Karajan in Japan (1957) 7. Karajan in Japan (1981) 8. E. Kleiber (1953?) 9. Furtwängler (1947) 10. C. Kleiber in Chicago (1978)
An absolute music genius- apparently very very unpleasant fellow ; that’s very often the case with geniuses ; well .. who cares, what remains is his musical glory
One of my favs including his record.

"lets have fun, I will kill you."
Clean, clear, crisp, unmannered, perfect.
-and with plenty of soul, too. This is Fantastic !
Glorious!
The direction and interpretation of Karl Böhm is wonderful

Great music, orchestra and conductor. A superb performance like this often results from that combination.
Oh my god!
Never equaled or surpassed.

I was going to write clean, clear, crisp, unmannered and perfect, but I discovered that Peter Offtler, wrote it first.

Genteel or dynamic, live or recorded, Bohm is the best.

His record on dg from the 50s with the bpo is my favorite
This is also sublime
Sorry, all you “authenticists” out there, but this is how Beethoven should be done - strings with vibrato, double winds et al.

Karl is better than Carlos Kleiber because his music is crisp and clear.
