He raised the bar for everyone when it came to muscle mass and conditioning, and whilst the back and calves are just amazing, the shoulders also deserve mentioning ... and yet his shoulders were huge, especially in the back double biceps.

If you use the total number of MrO's then Ronnie or Lee Haney would have to be the pick. Ronnie's best versions were 98 or 99, and flex wheeler pushed him hard both years. In 93 Flex was really a distant second to Dorian, and you only need to listen to Shawn Ray's comments that year when he said, " when we saw Dorian we all knew we were fighting for second place", and 93 Flex was meant to be the best version. But Ronnie did win 8 O's and used to hold the record for the most pro wins (now overtaken by Dexter). For me, the 93 version of Dorian is the best and most complete physique ever presented on the MrO stage, but after this his physique was compromised by injury for his remaining victories.

Politics plays a role in the results, just check out 1997, they gave it to Dorian. To me, Vince Taylor had the best quality package in the 1980s.

Flex was often very soft through the posterior chain ... glutes, hamstrings, calves and spinal erectors were always a bit soft. I do think you have a point about Vince Taylor, who I reckon is the most overlooked bodybuilder in history. At one point he held the record for the most pro wins, largely between 89 and 94. For me he had superior aesthetics when compared with Flex, from the front. Vince also had much better calves too. 92 was meant to be between Dorian and Vince, but Vince came in soft, how different 90's bodybuilding could have been. Vince Taylor vs Flex Wheeler would make for an interesting match up.
@@casdomdomcas5214 the photography & lighting make a huge difference. You can't compare, a photographer adjusting lighting & taking 100+ pictures versus, one time pictures at a competition. That's why comparing the pictures is worthless. A great physique photographer in a controlled lighting environment gives these Dorian photos a big advantage. If you look close at the Dorian photos, you can see how the photographer adjusted the lighting on each shot, to give them more dramatic effect. The photographer is using a lot of other tricks too, like exposure time to make them look richer.
When comparing the two photos, especially when positioning Dorian a bit closer than Phil, and comparing a conditioned Dorian to a less conditioned Phil, the former appears more favorable. It's important to consider the differences between Dorian's stage photos and Phil Heath's stage photos, as they cannot be directly compared for various reasons (they aren't posted 😅 here). This is especially relevant for those who are not familiar with bodybuilding shows.
Phil can’t deal with Dorian here. There’s way too much difference in size. Yates is absolutely enormous. Also people consistently fail to point out that Yates never flexed his glutes or hams. Dorian has striated glutes relaxed. It’s clear his conditioning is top notch even at 3 weeks out.
Phil in 2013 did look fantastic, complete head to toe! Greatest bodybuilder we've seen in the last decade by miles. But when comparing phil to dorian, let alone the infamous black and whites. It's like comparing men against boys! Maybe the only thing phil has over dorian was better muscle separation and that's it! I don't think there is any bodybuilder.. on stage or offstage that can compete with dorian here. Even when dorian sucked down even more for this show, you had to be there to see how incredible he looked. So it doesn't bare thinking about seeing him look like this "in person"! Looks carved out of stone, more so the side tricep and back double, Jesus Christ! Slabs of rock hard granite glued to his back!
@@thehomefront1905 people don't grasp just how big Yates was because he lacked fullness and often came in flat so his individual pictures (where he stands alone) often give the illusion of him being smaller than he actually was. Phil is the opposite, he doesn't weigh much but his 3D muscle bellies and fullness give the illusion of him being much bigger. However, none of that matters because the real comparisons are done on stage where they stand next to each other and that's exactly where Yates' physique shines and makes others crumble, DIRECT comparison and posing.

You don't put enough emphasis on the lower body. Especially quads and hamstrings. They are present in every pose and are the deciding factor in close poses.
Imagine he is 3 weeks out. And depleting down and on the flat side to what he would have been during his peak week. If only he had a photoshoot from 93 peak week 🤯
The thing is Dorian could have looked like this for the contest and I think he should have, he gave up so much valuable size and only gained minimal cuts, not worth it. This version of Dorian would almost beat anyone contest condition or otherwise, simply awesome.

Phil Heath is my favorite athlete, but yea, Dorian takes this one with no doubt, but Phil Heath's biceps are better imo, 22 inches with a good peak, but i admire asf Phil MUSCULAR DENSITY which neither Dorian, Ronnie or Jay, had a better density to his back than Heath's.
Wow, I hate admit it but looking at these photos I think Dorian could be right there is no comparison. Even the Gift Phil Heath looks small and not as good overall. The 2011 Phil may have fared better but even then Dorian is just a freak as Ronnie was but I still think the gift had this overall.

Yo guys, you are soo wrong. Firstly, the scaling is wrong, the difference in height is only 1 inch. Secondly, I’m curious, Max, how do you see Dorian’s arms better than Phil’s in the front double? Even with the wrong scaling Phil’s arms are way better and always will be. Same goes with the midsections. Phil 2013 had a very ripped and thight midsection. I would judge the whole thing like this: Phil is definetely winning most muscular, front double, side chest, Dorian is winning front lat spread and the rest of the poses it depends. Back shots will always be close for these two and lets say that back lat spread would also go to Dorian, even though Phil distroys him with the hams and glutes plus conditioning. Back double, the same, Phil has better arms, better glutes and better hams. Its true that Dorian has those calves, but judges will always put hams and glutes over calves. What else? Side triceps. Its true, Dorian’s execution is flawless and it looks good, but how can you go against Phil on this one? Phil’s only true competitors on this department are Kevin and Roelly. I’m a big fan of both of them, but trying to be realistic here. A prime Dorian would never beat a prime Phil. Don’t know how it would have been if Phil competed in the 90’s or Dorian in the 2010’s, but if we compare prime Dorian to prime Phil, Dorian gets his ass kicked big time and I don’t care how unpopular this opinion is.

Holy crap. Usually on stage photos Phil definitely wins many poses against Dorian but these particular photos I didn’t have Phil win any (except crab most muscular). I understand black and white and a photo shoot but damn Yates that is honestly the best physique I’ve ever seen. He’s massive, aesthetic, and hard as a rock.
I don't know if it was his clavicles width or his waist being too blocky, but Dorian waist never looked as freakish in his BLS than in his FLS. I'm not talking mass, I'm talking that WOW factor that Ronnie Coleman had.
The point is that Dorian is of comparable body fat % here at 3 weeks out compared to Phil on stage. If you take Phil 3 weeks out he would look bigger yes but his body fat % would be higher. Dorian at the same level of shred/dryness will always be bigger than Phil

Bodybuilding is an illusion, from the front, smaller bodybuilders can make themselves look huge and match bigger bodybuilders. From the side its a different story. Just look at the "GIRTH" of Dorian. Stacks & stacks & stacks of muscle on top of each other.

He looks bigger because he was bigger, 270 plus pounds. Phil in 2013 was about 240 and much narrower which does help him in certain poses like the most muscular because it makes him more dense and compact but hurts him a lot in overall stature and poses where width is required (lat spreads). You are out of your mind if you think Phil is anywhere in size to Yates. His fullness and 3D effect give the illusion of that, but standing on stage next to each other that wouldn't be the case

Back shots will always be close for these two and lets say that back lat spread would also go to Dorian, even though Phil distroys him with the hams and glutes plus conditioning. Back double, the same, Phil has better arms, better glutes and better hams. Its true that Dorian has those calves, but judges will always put hams and glutes over calves. What else? Side triceps. Its true, Dorian’s execution is flawless and it looks good, but how can you go against Phil on this one? Phil’s only true competitors on this department are Kevin and Roelly.
I’m a big fan of both of them, but trying to be realistic here. A prime Dorian would never beat a prime Phil. Don’t know how it would have been if Phil competed in the 90’s or Dorian in the 2010’s, but if we compare prime Dorian to prime Phil, Dorian gets his ass kicked big time and I don’t care how unpopular this opinion is.

Holy crap. Usually on stage photos Phil definitely wins many poses against Dorian but these particular photos I didn’t have Phil win any (except crab most muscular). I understand black and white and a photo shoot but damn Yates that is honestly the best physique I’ve ever seen. He’s massive, aesthetic, and hard as a rock.
I don't know if it was his clavicles width or his waist being too blocky, but Dorian waist never looked as freakish in his BLS than in his FLS. I'm not talking mass, I'm talking that WOW factor that Ronnie Coleman had.

How about you do a comparison with both men in the off season. Phil on stage is bound to be smaller than he would be in the off season.
The point is that Dorian is of comparable body fat % here at 3 weeks out compared to Phil on stage. If you take Phil 3 weeks out he would look bigger yes but his body fat % would be higher. Dorian at the same level of shred/dryness will always be bigger than Phil
For me: Dorian > Phil.

Interesting video but put that version of Dorian on the stage... under those lights...different story. Old pics, gym photoshoots, black and white= a huge advantage. I think 2011 version of Phil would be better to go against Dorian, and 2013 version against Ronnie.

He looks bigger because he was bigger, 270 plus pounds. Phil in 2013 was about 240 and much narrower which does help him in certain poses like the most muscular because it makes him more dense and compact but hurts him a lot in overall stature and poses where width is required (lat spreads). You are out of your mind if you think Phil is anywhere in size to Yates. His fullness and 3D effect give the illusion of that, but standing on stage next to each other that wouldn't be the case
