  • Hey everyone and welcome back to more Railroads Online! Today we are completing step 2 of the coal mine connection project, the rail up the river valley! This route actually took a lot longer than expected and has some elevation changes you wouldn't believe just looking at the terrain! Almost completely to the coal mine now and ready to deliver some goods!

Fun fact, the tenders have brakes BECAUSE the air pressure leaks constantly. When you park a loco with air brakes for extended periods of time, turn the tender brake on.

@@kANGaming What I as a railway professional love about this series is watching you as someone without any (from what you told in one of the first episodes) substantial prior knowledge of railways and railway operations make the mistakes and learn the lessons which the real life railway system had to do pretty much the same way as well. Not having the game myself and thus not knowing its limitations, it's hard to guess what will be or become possible later in the game, but I'm pretty curious to see what lessons you'll learn and what ideas you'll have to mitigate and solve problems, risks etc.
I have no clue as to where in Canada you live, but you might want to check the Wikipedia articles titled "Ridable miniature railway", "Fifteen-inch gauge railway" and "Minimum-gauge railway", which all have a list and there seem to be a few in Canada (mind the list isn't exhaustive, at least over here in non-English speaking Europe I know several examples which aren't on the list). Those little railways are often built in a rather … freestyle manner, eyeballed and roughly estimated, so you might find them especially reminiscent of this game here and you might like them ;-)

don't air brakes use the loss of pressure to trigger brakes?

The very tall groundwork makes perfect sense near rivers - here we often see 2m+ tall groundwork running along rivers doubling as extra flood protection for the areas around it.

I remember my trip up to the coal mine. I did something similar with your long winding section, but I did a long sloping bridge down the river. Also ever thought of a having maintenance train? I have one using the Tier 2 Porter "Betsy II", a hopper, a boxcar, a car of cordwood, a flat of rails, and a caboose. The cordwood represents fresh ties, the boxcar although empty roleplays as having the spikes, fishplates, nuts, bolts, tools, and other rail assembly needs, the hopper though empty would be the ballast hopper, and the rails are a given.

Maybe someday when the game matures or a mod makes it possible there will be a whole chain of industry with quarries, ties manufacture, ect where you could make your own or buy from players or NPCs to lay foundations, bridges and tracks rather than the free magic it is curently :)

    • @alericjohansen6775
      @alericjohansen6775 2 роки тому +3

I think they should make the foundation darker, like the snow melted on it, thus making the rocks underneath more visible.
That would make it so there is still snow on them, thus the snow theme would still be there, but would also be a little more realistic (depending on how you count that) AND would be easier for players to lay the foundation and see it.

    Btw, some tips:
Tenders aren't weighted correctly as of now. Next update, they weigh 10 tons.
Second, use the Cylinder Cs. They help with acceleration and give more pulling power.
Third, be careful in the next update. Every car weighs 10 tons then, so huge loads could be too heavy for any train.

At 28:10, I was thinking that in the future you could have a small yard for switching engines, if the non-geared locomotives can't make it up with cargo (meaning that you bring a gear train up with freight, then stop in a small yard after the Y to switch engines for better speeds onwards to the mine). I'm not sure how much sense this makes ingame, but I thought it's a fun idea to share with you.

Hi kAN, rotten luck with "Gutless".
Suggested justification for the route crisscrossing the river:
Private landowner on the east and the track is skirting along the land claim.
The landowner is not willing to give up or sell his lands due to rich mineral deposits along the east hills along the river.

If the mechanics are accurate “notching up” the reverser once you’re moving should make the top speed faster and use less steam boiler pressure. Starting off in 100% reverser is like 1st gear on a car. Gradually reducing the % of the reverser is like changing up gear; less power, more speed.

With the groundwork. Once you have the track laid you can delete the groundwork and relay it, this time affixed to the track. The groundwork will then follow the track perfectly and you can relay the entire route in one go to make sure there's no ugly connections. It's time consuming but it looks 100% better once you're done. That's essentially how they do it in reality; Lay a foundation, then track, the go over the whole thing with ballast. Just remember to connect the groundwork to the track every few pieces so it keeps to the correct height.

I bet if you were to take that new track and cross the waterfall to the North, you could even have a switch post waterfall and have one line spiral downwards to the smelter and have the other side of the switch rise slightly, hugging the ridge and eventually meeting up pretty close to your switch to the new iron mine track, then you’d be able to bypass the smelter line and leave the original iron mine track as a dedicated delivery to smelter line. Because after all, it seems like most of your trains can handle 3% so long as it’s fairly straight, but that 4% section bogs everything, and then it takes forever to get your speed built back up.

So just a thought.. what you could do instead of a loop at the coal mine is make a rail that comes to a turntable, connects back into a rail directly next to the other rail and make a parallel line that would run the length of the train. Connect the Locomotive to what would be the back of the train and pull it out that way instead. That secondary line could also be used in case you have more than one train visiting the coal mine at the same time.

what you could do is have it set up to where you take the route to the Iron mine, and then you'll travel from the iron mine, down to the coal mine, or something like that, because isn't the climb up to one of the other facilities at least along or nearby the coal mine route less steep going up then the climb to the coal mine? this could also mean that going from the coal mine you could take the steeper route, because then you're just 'falling' down the track, so you wouldn't need to engage the breaks or regulators often if at all, you'd just need to apply the breaks to slow down

the game only gives you trestle style bridges to play with, but I think for a small river crossing like this you'd be using a Girder style bridge. atleast that's what they originally used for the railroad that crosses the river by my place. it has two THICK steel girders tied together with cross beams and the really heavy railroad ties. terrifying to walk across the river was like 30 feet down...
of course that style bridge today isn't really that good, so they seem to be opting for raised earth and concrete culvert style bridges. though that might only work for slow rivers a fast river would probably be using a truss style bridge.

I think instead of getting a 3rd Eureka, get a Climax. It's not as fast as the Heisler, but it's stronger and doesn't have the wheelspin glitch. It was also the second most popular logging engine besides the Shay. It's a good engine and I'd say you should try it out.

Since they fixed the heisler it can not be beat. I use it to pull a 30 car train to he iron mine. It pulls 5% grade at 30%reg. The climax stalled out.

It'd be great if they made a proper topographic overlay for the map. That way you can tell exactly where the flat segments are, so you can run efficient track

Could you please call the new ‘Gutless/Eureka’
    Newcastle Or maybe Stockade?

A train ran out of air pressure near Lac Megantic Canada and rolled into the town and caused a lot of damage. They blamed the crew for not setting enough hand brakes. If you leave your engine set the brake on your tender.

Would the Eureka tinder not re-rail because the engine wasn't there? Maybe the engine has to be re-railed first?

If you are happy with your track.. you can delete the ground work and snap it to the track and it will be perfectly centered

I usually cut my trees down first so I know where I'm going when I lay down track.

I hope they are making updates where users can do passenger runs and add more awesome locos!

I got this game a little while ago, and I haven't played the game much due to time restraints. But if you are open to it, I'd love to run some trains on your map! If not, I totally understand.
