I remember it like yesterday tuning into long wave radio for BBC 5 Live in county Kerry to listen to the 3-3- thriller January 4th, will never ever forget the excitement and the thrills of that experience, there was something magical about it listening to the commentary through intermittent crackling and static! I was watching it on Ceefax cos we couldn't afford Sky, when I thought "I wonder if football is on the radio", found my grandads old radio, messed with the dial for what seemed like forever, and there it was, think it was Alan Green and Jimmy Armfield on Radio 5. Beautiful stuff.
Awesome ... I grew up in the South West of England, so Five 5 was my connection to our games. I'll NEVER forget voices like Alan Green and Armfield ... They had the ability to make it all so exciting and tense ... I would close my eyes and try to picture what was happening.
