    When Mal "suggested" to Simon that he take his sister into town, he calls him "Doctor" and there's a sound of rustling in the nearby bushes. That was meant to suggest that the kidnapping hill-folk were listening in, while checking out the new visiting ship. That's how they knew he was a doctor.

    "Daddy will come and take us home" Daddy = Mal, Home = Serenity. Simon hasn't learned it yet but River often speaks in cryptic metaphors.
    Between the events of "Bushwhacked" & "Safe", Simon is learning just how fortunate he is to be a member of Mal's crew.
    As someone else already posted, the Hill Folk were hiding in the bushes listening to Mal telling the Doctor to take his sister into town. When she disappeared from Simon at the store, River sensed the happy emotions coming from the dance party. Through observation she quickly learned the local dance steps and within minutes was innovating the dance.

      i love that the show - and other projects she's done - utilize that and let her have her dance along with her acting. i love when shows kind of honor and respect where an actor comes from and something that's important to them. recently i found out in schitt's creek, they did a whole episode about putting on a performance of caberet, simply because the actress that plays one of the character's always said that would be her dream role. so they wanted to give that to her. i just love when shows do this, they let the actors really shine and honor where they come from and the backgrounds they have.

    Remember, in the Pilot, Simon talks about some men who would help him break River out.I assumed that that was immediately before they came on the ship.
    It is well accepted that Mom & Dad Tam are on the social inside of the Alliance. They have considerable social status and weren't willing to risk it.

    • @robertanderson6929
      @robertanderson6929 2 роки тому +3

      Yes. But despite their privileged position or maybe because of it the Tam's are afraid of the government. It is also a bit of background on the Alliance. Just walking into a Police station becomes a part of one's "permanent record." Why is that important? Who will use that information against him in the future? And then there is the part when the father asks if Simon is trying to ruin the family and Simon replies, "I didn't know it would be so easy." It just goes to show how tenuous even privileged and powerful members of society are in a totalitarian state.

    • @davidmills8726
      @davidmills8726 2 роки тому +2

      I actually wonder if the senior Tams may have known more than was said. The program River was part of may not have been satisfied with taking random "applicants". How did the Tams get their money and prestige? Did they possibly work for the shadowy government? Any chance they were nothing more than a surrogate family? The father's lack of concern makes a lot more sense then. Simon may have been rejected by the program and they were just grooming him as a doctor to help support them once the checks stopped rolling in from the program. The father did mention the expense of bailing Simon out.

    • @robertanderson6929
      @robertanderson6929 2 роки тому +2

      @@davidmills8726 You could very well be right about that. After all, River is a "child." The "Academy" which Simon describes as them having never heard of before, found River and convinced her parents to enroll her there. Whether they knew about the experiments or not they could easily have been told that students are "trained and prepared" for important "government service." And in a totalitarian state, "government service" is the key to financial security and more important physical security. After all, if you are not "with" the government then you are just "little people" like Mal and the rest of the crew. And I'm sure the parents rationalize their decision and their blind eyes by thinking they've helped to secure River's future with the government. That's another bit of the story we'd have enjoyed finding out if there had been future seasons.

      Yeah - my take is that River often speaks intuitively using emotional metaphor anchored by her own or the experiences of others. We often lack context to give River's statements meaning which leaves a cryptic, gibberish feel. But if you can figure out the context, you can see what she was saying as well as occasional insights to character.

    Mal and Zoe. Again, Zoe is watching Mal's back while he is trading the cattle. And once again she is saving Mal when his plan goes South. And she doesn't necessarily agree with taking Shepard to the Alliance cruiser but she doesn't have a better idea so she backs Mal's plan. And she doesn't undermine Mal's authority with the crew but she does try to warn Kaliee not to get too hopeful and reminds her of Mal's history with plans which includes the one which got the Shepard shot and Simon and River kidnapped. Zoe, uses the word, "sanguine" to describe her feelings about going to the Alliance a word which means both _hopeful_ and _bloody._ The character of Zoe is written so well and Gina Torres plays the supporting role so demure that its almost too subtle. But that's part of the character's charm.

    Regarding Shepherd Book, I always interpreted this episode to mean he was someone important in the alliance before, who for some personal reasons had given up his previous life to become a man of faith. He seems to know more about some things than a simple shepherd normally would, like in the Train Job when he knows a lot about Nishka.
    It reminded me of the tales of samurai who, tired of killing and war, put away their swords, shaved off their topknots and retired to a monastery to become monks. They still have all the knowledge and training of a samurai, but have become men of peace rather than men of war.

    Fun fact, Summer Glau was a ballerina who injured her….foot/toe? Anyhow, she couldn’t tolerate more than a few minutes of ballet after that. Then she tried acting. In another Whedon show she is a ghost ballerina and is just so beautiful dancing. A third series where she has a brief dance scene is Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles. It’s a bit haunting in that series.
    Her stunt/fighting choreographers were so impressed by her abilities (all that dance training still paid off) and muscle memory that they kept creating more and more complex routines for the River character and she nailed them every time.

    Hi Anna, people have mentioned already that River is talking about the Serenity's return when she says ''Daddy will come for us", and "it's time to go" - for me the interesting part is that closes the loop formed when we see the senior Mr Tam state "I won't come for you" should Simon be arrested again. The poignancy comes when Mal's offhand comment of "you're on my crew" brings home to Simon to see what 'family' really means.

    The episodes are about a month apart or in duration... So I would say River and Simon have been on Serenity closer to 6 months than 2 or 3.... The best lines of the episode got cut (presumably for copyright) my favorite is "Doctor your talent for alienating folks in near miraculous" - I think this line was added in post production - because the noise of Serenity hovering nearly drowns it out and its easy to miss. Also this episode starts to build River's character from her "Sad little king" moment in the last episode - to being feared as a full blown mind reading witch...

    Ahhh, you skipped my favourite line, Patron: "She's a witch" "Mal "Yeah but she's our witch now cut her down."
    Book is... constantly knowing "more" about things like Niska than a mere Shepard should... this was the first episode where it was "obvious" Book has a past... that is more than just "preaching".
    Summer/River are not quite a crazy as she seems at first glance. A few time during your reaction you "struggled" for the right word. River never struggles that way but the words and phrases she uses are not always... normal. If you take the words as spoken they seem like rambling, but if you take the possible meanings... "Time to go" doesn't mean die, it means go back to Serenity... which makes Serenity home. If that's home, who takes them there? Mal. If Mal takes them home... and Mal is like a father looking out for them... Father did come to take them home.
    What River says and does in the moment often seems scrambled, but if you look back on it... you can untangle it.
