Great episode. Going back to leaving the doctor in prior episode - Mal justified it at the time as needed a doctor for Shepard. They needed medical attention quickly - going out and looking for the doctor is risky because there is no telling how long it would take to find and recover the doctor. So yes Mal did the right thing to leave the Doctor and River behind, even if at the time it must have left them heartbroken.

Mal, was a Sargent in the war, a person who assess and trains, and act as a shepard, watching over his small flock. That role seeped into him and he accepted that role willingly and it is now a permanent part of his character, or more likely, always was. Should not be a spoiler, the Alliance is the last superpowers on earth that was, the USA and China formed the Alliance, how it is structured, we don't know.

Officially, it’s just a federation of planets, some voluntarily and some…encouraged. Of course, officially America is a constitutional republic, which has outlawed noble titles and hereditary nobility. That said, America has had noble families since at least the Gilded Age, and so likely does the Alliance.

    That’s not in the Bible.
    But this is:
“I slept but my heart was awake.
    Listen! My beloved is knocking:
“Open to me, my sister, my darling,
    my dove, my flawless one.
My head is drenched with dew,
my hair with the dampness of the night.”
I have taken off my robe-
must I put it on again?
    I have washed my feet-
    must I soil them again?
    My beloved thrust his hand through the latch-opening;
my heart began to pound for him.
I arose to open for my beloved,
and my hands dripped with myrrh,
    my fingers with flowing myrrh,
on the handles of the bolt.
    I opened for my beloved,
but my beloved had left; he was gone.”

I don't know if the extended canon discusses what specific kind of government runs the 'verse. We definitely see classes even on the core worlds. The frontier is definitely a little more wide open as far as government control (or lack thereof). We catch a few tidbits - Simon was in a "Blackout Zone" which seems to be enough to get you in trouble with the authorities, and just entering a police station seems to be enough for a black mark on your "permanent profile". There is mention of a "Parliament" later, but that's all it is - just a mention. I would imagine it is some kind of autocracy, with not many freedoms (like freedom of the press). In any event, it is not a regime I would like to live under.

The graphic novel _A Shepard's Tale_ will provide some answers about Book's past that we would otherwise have learned in later seasons. As for the Alliance we are never given any actual description of its structure. It's referred to as "democratic" (there is mention of a Parliament in a later episode) and one is given the idea that there is representation which is likely population based such that it favors the core worlds. You get the idea that smaller worlds or moons are basically run by individual Governors with the approval or sanction of the Alliance. These rulers tend to be spoiled, rich, potentates who run the local big industry and lord over the "peasants." For an example look for Magistrate Higgins in the upcoming episode _Jaynestown._ Also look for these types on a more populated world like Persephone at a party Inara attends in the upcoming episode _Shindig._ The basis of the civil war was the outer worlds and moons rebelling against being brought under the Alliance's authority. Whether these local Governors and their mistreatment of the local populations of the outer worlds helped to instigate the rebellion or these men are installed as a result of the rebellion we do not know. But, slight spoiler, we were to find out in later seasons that the Blue Sun Corporation basically runs the Alliance and everything else. So, it is the typical fig leaf of democracy behind which oligarchs are pulling all of the strings.

    • @isaackellogg3493
      @isaackellogg3493 Рік тому +1

The government structure where the big planets lord it over the small planets is called a federacy, as opposed to a federation where everybody’s equal regardless of size or importance. If the central government lacks the power to overrule the member governments, we add a con- in front of the fed, like the American Confederation (1781-87) versus the Confederacy (1861-65). The Union of Allied Planets is therefore functionally a federacy.

22:10 I think it's best to view this as intended, that being utilitarian in nature. It's not condoning domestic violence, he's definitely not that type, but if she's willing to fight on an even footing like we've seen, she's got to expect getting hit back, and this was just a delaying blow with no real malice behind it (I think by this stage Mal probably sees this as par for course).

I understand initially being a bit iffy about the optics of a big guy punching a defenseless woman (as in: she'd already been physically subdued) in the face, but she did drug and violently assault members of Serenity's crew in order to set them all up to die, and if she were a man, she'd just have been killed off, one way or the other. In the end, she gets off scot-free (aside from being cold-cocked) and able to continue her life of crime (which we must assume results in people dying) just because she's a (pretty?) girl. So if you think about it, if there's anything morally objectionable here, it's not that he hits her, but that it's all he does. But, I mean, it's a TV show and not a handbook on morality, so who cares? I'm just saying that the punch is easily justified.

Technically it is the Anglo-Sino Alliance (after the first two worlds that formed it [Londinium and Sihnon]), although it is often known as the Core Worlds Alliance or simply the Alliance. The basic political structure appears to be a unicameral parliament (on Londinium) with operating committees conducting the majority of actual government business. Parliamentary members are drawn from the member worlds, and the implication is that they have now become somewhat oligarchical and plutocratical, since many in the core worlders, happy in their safe existence, don't really take all that much notice of the government or what they are up to. And while technically any "full member of the Alliance" can be elected to parliament, it is expensive, which means most members are beholden to outside interests. As such the megacorporations (such as Blue Sun), and the various trade and guild associations that operate in the Alliance do have considerable influence on parliament's decisions, especially since since a large part of federal (as opposed to local planetary) income is from taxes on interplanetary trade (which is why smuggling is a thing). The formation of the Alliance did involve some active military suppression of possible dissident elements on the core worlds. The military operates under the authority of a special semi-independent Council that is responsible for maintaining the security of the Alliance.
They are not imperialistic per se but want to extend their federal authority and control over all the worlds of the verse "for their own good" and whether they want to or not. For some this is idealistic (and this is how Alliance propaganda uniformly presented the Unification War to it's own population and what is taught in their schools), but for others this was an opportunity to gain increased access to those resources in the outer worlds that bringing them under the control of the core worlds authority will provide. And some do view the lawless chaos of the rim (replete with smugglers, pirates, rebels and the like) as an existential threat to civilised order - you have to remember that the destruction of the Earth That Was through nuclear war was an important reminder to them of the potential problem that could happen if humanity was not united in their new refuge.
However the harsh conditions of the rim (the majority of terraforming effort when the verse was settled from Earth That Was had been spent on the core worlds) have encouraged an independent spirit and "free-thinkers" that did not take too kindly to losing their freedoms. Especially since the population imbalance meant that any influence in the alliance parliament was going to be minimal at best for the largest outer worlds (such as Persephone, Hera, and Shadow), and non-existent for many of the smaller moons. and they did not take too kindly to that idea, and formed the Independents Alliance (aka The Independents or "The Browncoats"). After five years of fighting (almost entirely in the rim) they surrendered during the Battle of Serenity Valley.
That said the Alliance didn't actually have the resources to extend effective direct control over most of the rim (apart from certain special facilities and the larger worlds), so they tend to only be seen when they butt their noses into people's business, and the smaller moons are still pretty independent, answering to "self-elected' local mayors and governors or federally-appointed magistrates. There is little federal oversight of these people which has contributed to disaffection in the rim. Additionally since the suffrage is limited to "full members of the Alliance" which is actively used to disqualify problematic candidates and limit the ability to vote, especially from the rim. And additional taxes and fees and regulation that just make an already hard life harder.
There are still problems, but the Alliance does heavily censor the wave (news broadcasts) to ensure that any problems are kept pretty quiet and the illusion that all is well and everyone is happy. Especially to the population in the core worlds who have little of no understanding of how hard-scrabble life is on the rim.

Taking a step back to talk about Book. I read the WEB Griffin series "The Corps" that started in pre-WWII China with military intelligence posing as missionaries expecting greater autonomy in surveiling military and government development. The missionaries were young married Protestant couples who always seemed to return with more than they brought, engaged with the black market in art, drugs, and weapons.
Allegations go back to the Boxer Rebellion. I could see Shepherd Book being at the Abbey after the war until he had cause to tour the 'Verse to chronicle the changes. He is meant to be incognito, but capable of protecting himself. The ident-card would assure cooperation of Alliance facilities, and instruct them he is deep cover following a more dangerous objective.

The "Aliance" is the government within the verse of planets and moons.
Shepard Book, my personal take is, an ex-operative of the Aliance that upon retirement went into the clergy for self reflection and healing due to his own PTSD caused by the memory of all he had to do in the line of duty.....much as I used the wilderness of Nature through long distance hiking and wilderness survival living to cope with my own PTSD from my military service time.

We don't know very much (in the in-show canon) about the structure of the Alliance other than that there's a Parliament that runs things, which suggests that it's an interplanetary super-government or some kind of federal arrangement amongst the inner worlds, with technical authority over the outlying planets and moons but much less practical control.
And nice catch at 17:33. There's never any sound in the space sequences; like Stanley Kubrick in 2001, it's covered with music (though unlike Kubrick, Whedon did it in a way to make most people not notice that there's no sound).

you skipped Mal kissing Kaylee's forehead, and one of many good verbal spars in this episode:

    Mal: I can't help myself.
Inara finally let's down her guard and kisses Mal... and Mal thinks she was suckered by "the missus" (sine we don't really know her name) - this is exactly the build up/let down they tease us with in the couples aboard ship... that are not already married at least.

You are the first female reactor who has figured Malcolm out. He was an Honorable, Loyal, Moral, Religious Man. After the war he may have lost his religion and is bitter but he is still honorable, loyal and moral (in his own way). He protected and held faith with his men in battle and does the same with the crew now. He is in love with a woman who's job is to sleep with many men. Due to his honor he cannot "Get with her". This puts him in a bad place and he takes it out on her. The cut downs are his way of telling her she needs to give up that job forever. The women reactors never seem to understand that. You have.

She also doesn't accuse Mal of _cheating_ on the "prostitute" with his wife. I've watched several of these by other women and they inevitability see his succumbing to Saffron's charms as a betrayal of Inara. But Inara is literally arguing with him that she needs more time to have more anonymous sex with other men IN THIS EPISODE. Yet for some reason some women believe Mal owes Inara some fidelity.

    • @AnnaAlexanderAuthor

Funny. I didn't see any "infidelity."
At this point if the season I see Mal and Inara flirting at the edges of potential. But they both have roles to play that are at odds of their growing wants.
Saffron might have tempted him, but he did pull back. However I recognize that wasn't because of loyalty to Inara but his own moral code of taking advantage of Saffron.

Just wanted to point out that Mal was NOT that stupid, as most think in that last scene. As smart as he is, he knew this was not the time to do anything other than address the obvious weirdness of Inara's statements. First, if they were to get together, Mal would insist that Inara give up being a companion. Hell, any man would. Second, because of that, sooner of later, Inara would come to resent it, and then him. Third, they are both too independent and hate complications. Fourth, having a relationship with each other would put both at risk ... Mal most of all, because anyone could threaten, kidnap, hurt, kill, etc. one of the 2 to try to get to either of them or make them do something to prevent it.
No, Mal dealt with it by joking about it. By dealing with the situation in this way, he left Inara wondering, and it gave them both an "out" of a situation that they would otherwise have to have a talk about somewhere down the road. I mean, listen to the way he lead into the conversation. He used logic and took us ALL to the conclusion that he was going to either get Inara to say she loved him or he was going to tell her that he loved her. We were ALL tricked, and I think it was a damn funny joke.

I think you are reading too much into it. We are that dense when it comes to women. You have to tell us what you want in plain language. We are not mind readers. Any man who understands the weird queues women throw off all the time is just not normal. Our brains run on one level and one level only. Women have as many as five or six levels going at the same time. That's why we don't understand women at all most of the time. :)

I'm part of that "We" you are talking about too, and as a person watching it unfold, "I" can tell they both have feelings for each other ... not "hidden" feelings, but out in the open ones ... as can everyone else, so why would you think THEY don't realize it ???
I think it's YOU that is not giving either Mal or Inara enough credit, even though it's obvious that both are very intelligent people. Every person I've seen watch an episode immediately picks up on it.
I could see and maybe even agree with your theory IF 1 or the other never made "clear as day" their affections for each other, but everyone, and I mean everyone, including the crew and all of us watching the series, know immediately that they are fighting it, and they are doing it because of all of the ramifications that would bring.
There have been plenty of times that Mal will take ahold of Inara, pause and then tenderly say something in a way that broadcasts his feelings. There have been times when Inara does similar things to Mal. They both acknowledge it in strange little ways, then go off in opposite directions.
L👀K, I've thought this over for nearly 20 years ... ever since the 1st time I watched the show, all the times I've watch the DVDs and all the times I've watched reactors (now up to around 35-40 of 'em), and I always rethink this scene, and it's obvious, the way Mal starts off the conversation, he is setting her up for the punchline, just so he could see that look on her face and, as I said, to address the issue , get it out into the open and give them both an out.
