This deserves more likes, I was so busy thinking they should have burnt the clothes or bed to make the fire instead. The problem though is they can't risk resting near the glacier due to the mental effects of the glacier.

Just a little advice for people who may not have that much experience with ice and snow. If you have to for some reason cross over icy lake or river and you aren't sure the ice can carry you: crawl, don't walk. That way your weight is distriputed to wider are which makes it less likely for the ice to break. Just a friendly advice from the north.

Also take something that could help you get up in case you do fall in.
If you fall and manage to get up, roll away from the hole to a direction you know was safe.
If you need to help someone else get up from the ice, don't go any closer than necessary and offer them a long scarf or branch or something.

That is good advice, but I think people should just roll on the ice instead. Less exertion.
Here's some advice from the South: take a running start, then glide with your whole body across the lake at high speeds. That way he weight is still distributed and you'll cross much faster.

These sessions are the high quality combinations of game session realism while still being highly entertaining and funny. Tough balance.
There are other realistic D&D session channels. But you know, for me, there's a bit too much realism and they come across as ~cringe (imo, only). Not here.

@@AyarARJ yeah - the balance is all about ‘seeing the fun of being a player’ and ‘seeing the fun of being the character’. Neither is always serious - and since it live rolling of table play, the VLDL acting crew (including guests and Rob) is actually improvising ‘their characters’ and improvising ‘funny player to player table talk’ too…. It takes a lot of skill to build off of each other and make it entertaining. Yes - Sometimes they need to be a bit ‘more focused’, but on the whole - it make for way more entertainment than a ‘more serious’ campaign. This is the magic of VLDL D&D. - we have fun poking at our characters, each other’s characters, each other, and ourselves….. also: lest I forget - turning on subtitles adds even another layer of humor [[poking fun at everyone -you rock too - Lorquin ]]

I love how Baradun sees a hut and his first instinct is to set it on fire without even checking if the hut itself might be warm and a safer place for a freezing person.
I also love how everyone seems to be griping with each all the time, but when it comes to Grinn, he only gets love and kisses (as he should). XD Great job with the episode, I'm at the edge of my seat!
And still proceeds with it after Rob set it up as the perfect place to warm up Grinn, with even a spare set of dry clothes🤣

People who have fallen into freezing water get hypothermia pretty much immediately. The sheltered hut is only going to help someone who isn’t already chilled to their core. Baradun definitely needed to set that hut on fire, and the whole party also needed to share their body heat with Grinn.

Baradun can do major illusion now, which generates warmth. He didn't have to set the shack on fire, he just needed to create an illusion of heaters around Grinn.

@@matluoma9195 Oof, cant say for sure, because its too time-consuming to rewatch every episode since, but as far as I remember it - hill giant, Crag Cat, Insect-ish thing he got his Bloodbath from, Yarris "The Evil Wizard" Goldhorn and this yeti. I might be wrong tho + he was exploding things while training with Fib. So it might be something else. It could be just due to lvl-up or his "Sword burst" being the first successful spell since hill giant) Or Rob just being DM and deciding when to make his moves. Tbh I would like any of those theories and even more so if it is something we missed)

I love how these characters from a medieval setting have no wilderness survival instincts. Strip the freezing man out of his wet clothes, wrap him in a blanket while someone works out a fire and appropriate shelter (preferably both), then give him some dry clothes.
I don't know about anyone else, but I'm REALLY excited to see this glacier.

What Ben doesnt realise is that he is the ultimate spy now. He has TELEPATHY and can become a tiny dark animal that flies silently and is good at detecting stuff... so you know he can hide easily (I would imagine with advantage for being small and not easy to notice or even camouflaged), fly above the enemies and tell his friends what is going on with Telepathy.
Yeah, but it is much more funnier to charge blindly towards the enemy, as if you were a full armour knight, and not a rouge..
Bat shaped Ben would be great in a war… depending in the range of his telepath ability.
Also consider that this also allows him to sneakily appear behind his enemies and do a sneak attack.
Glad they managed to decipher the G-spot.

i adore hamish's character so much
Chainmail is surprisingly not that much of a hindrance when swimming. The dispacement negates a lot of the weight, and unlike clothes, it doesn't get soaked making swimming harder. There are quite a few videos of people swimming in chainmail on youtube.
Freezing on the other hand... yeah, burning the hut down should have been a death sentence, in freezing weather, especially in a snowstorm, wet clothes doesn't dry in front of a fire anytime soon, and wearing metal in subzero temperatures makes you lose body heat FAST.
Baradun probably killed Grinn with good intentions, but Ron saved him :-)

Fortunately for our heroes, a Frost Giant is a tailor-made opponent for Baradun. Fireball, Magic Missile, Fire Bolt, Fire Bolt, Fire Bolt (repeat ad. inf. until dead). Front Giant is going to enjoy being lit on fire about as much as those Yetis did. Light ‘im up, Baradun!
Greg and Poppy can easily deal with it too. Poppy’s flamethrower form and Greg’s magic gun or wand of magic missiles.
Also, I think frost giants can cast some kind of freeze mind right? Which will slow baradun down a bit

I had my first d&d session last night (and tried to dm it) and I've just begun to fathom the amount of work Rob puts into these campaigns, you're truly amazing!

DMing for the first time is a challenge, even more if you create your own world, but DMing at your first game of d&d is hardcore. I hope you de best of luck and the subreddit DMacademie is of great help if you have trouble with anything and i really mean anything, not just the rules but also the way to deal with specific type of player or your personnel flaws as a DM

love how the cleric, with the most heavy, chain mail armour. Who crosses a thin ice scenario 'after' everyone else, is the one who falls in (fails dex). Sometimes it feels like the dice just help tell the story of inevitability in D&D.

As a Quebecer who knows very well how to save the life of someone drenched in water during the winter, I found the party's solution to save Grinn extremely amusing. It's clear that New Zealanders have zero experience with real winter and didn't pick up Rob's not so subtle hints that the dead fisherman had a nice set of dry clothes.

3:40 Greg could wear the ring just fine, it just wasn’t activated (so he couldn’t walk on water)…. If he DID have the ring he could carry people. However, why didn’t Greg use his ‘multipurpose’ rope like @ the Chasm when they 1st landed @ the Frozen North - essentially the same problem as before.

First aid tips. If you fall into an icy water like this standard protocol is to get the person out of his/her clothes immediately followed by get the person in warm clothes and get warm by any means as fast as possible.
Set them on fire? Really warm, really fast.
If you do that the person can go into shock. If you've ever been really cold and got hot water on it? Then you feel like 1000 daggers are causing you pain? That is what happens. To avoid this you must take it slow. Change clothes plus lots of blankets. If in wilderness then hug the person to transfer you body heat to the person.

I believe the trick if you fall into icy water is to then go roll around in the snow. While that sounds nuts, it freezes the water solid so it doesn't pull the heat away from you as quickly as it would in liquid form
