Look at her, so perfect & beautiful......for a filly, enormous at 17 hands high, standing on those delicate dancer's legs. There will never be another Ruffian. Rest in Peace dear girl, you were known for your sweet personality, and the world is a lesser place without you.
I watch all the Ruffian tributes, and I keep coming back to this one...a really beautiful remembrance. The music is perfect. Ruffian and Eight Belles will have a special place in racing forever.
OMG. My heart has allways had a spot 4 Ruffian and after seeing the tight shots of her face I see in her eye that LOOK OF A CHAMPION. Did anyone else catch it? OMG. Bless her big heart.
This was one of the first videos I saw about Ruffian about ten years ago. Hearing that song today always reminds me of those days. Thank you very much!
Poetry in motion - but it's really in the static shots of her walking or in her stance, that you can see her fire, energy and true character. Rest in peace beautiful one. Thanks for the video.
I had to change the channel too when she broke down. That was a very moving movie and the man who played Mr. Whitely in the movie was AWESOME!!! Ruffian was a special girl, no doubt. RIP girl
RR, absolutely exquisite with all the right quotes, some of those still shots of her, that aerodynamic form, so beautiful, so heartbreaking. Just bought a little book on Amazon called Licorice Daughter can't wait to get it. (did you know Secretariat is her uncle? Bold Ruler his sire is grandsire of Reviewer).
I belive the great ones come back, Man O'War, Secretariat, Buckpasser, John Henry,...Ruffian...Rags to Riches...I met a man at Belmont...when RTR won, he yelled, "that was for Ruffian"....I belive it was...
I agree with you but because of her they are Safer and we have learned better treatment for other animals as well it was sad to see her go when i mentioned the name in front of my Grampy (granddad) he almost started crying recalling memories of her... She will never be forgotten.
She was QUEEN of the race track......the problem was her pedigree ..she came from a line of soft bones..both her sire and damn both broke leg bones..and that match race dident help her fate obviously....greatest filly to ever run..will never be another 1 like her.....
exaura, yes, didn't Ruffian keep on going for 40-50 yards, after her leg snapped? The lady just would not give up, until she absolutely had to as her body failed her........really there are no words to convey her courage, her spirit and heart. One in a million filly RIP dear sweet heroic Ruffian! I am humbled by her inspiration.
@0Twintig She did strike her shoulder on the starting gate as she left the stall, in the match race with FP. This didn't cause the BREAK, but it unbalanced her and made her inadvertently place too much weigh on her other leg to regain her balance. This did contribute to the breakdown but was not the direct cause.
Cameras....hard to admit tho it is, you have a valid point. It is said that what made Ruffian great (her tenacity and will to RUNNNNNN), is what cost her her life when she woke from the anesthesia. All around, hers is prolly the saddest tale I know of in horse racing. I honour her memory and always will, and celebrate her life and spirit. Thanks for all here who join me in doing so!!
i think the age a horse is allowed to race is like 4. since it takes awhile for a horses knees to fill in. that why sometimes you get these break downs
I loved Ruffian. She was equine hero and was annoyed when eveyone forgets about her and the other racehorses that have died and focus only on Babaro. She was a true Athlete, she ran against the boys and schooled them at their own game. She is a true race horse!
I assure you anyone who follows horse racing at any level will not forget Ruffian, Secretariat, Sham, Man O War, Sea Biscuit m, Citation, Whirl A Way and so many more legends. It is their spirits that drive souls with hope at the birth of every foal maybe this one is the next legend bringing us to never forget these legends. Ruffian has her place and it can never be taken. Some shoes weren't meant to be filled.
Tbezz I see your point. I also bemoan the "jinx" placed on Foolish Pleasure after Ruffian's demise. He did nothing but do what was asked of him, ie. run his heart out, and his legacy is forever soiled by those not in the know saying he "beat Ruffian". Nobody won, what a tragedy!!!
They are finally learning that they can't use metal shoes. Metal doesn't absorb the shock, so the leg/foot shatters. Rubber shoes are the answer. They're slowly seeing the light.
@CamerasAreAwesome i think racing is great but they should wait to race them until they are 4 so they can grow more and be faster because they would be stronger
@SeeYaOnSondee Use your brains, if she'd snapped her leg when she jumped from the gate how could she have run for the first half mile? She'd have gone down in the first fifty yards! What you saw in the movie was her striking the gate. The break actually happened after the first half mile. It is true that Velazquez could not pull her up for about 100-200 yards because she fought to keep running, but she did NOT run from the beginning of the race with a fractured ankle.
The trainer never wanted her to do the match race. With a different trainer, I believe that Ruffian wouldn't have lasted as long as she did. To the ones that run the racing industry it's all about the BUCK and they put tons of pressure on the owners to race their horses in certain races.
@RememberRuffian no she does jumping and shes not against that!. she doesnt like that they race horses when they are that young at it gives them back and oof problems when they are older from riding them at a young age!
Nicko I disagree.......many were at fault. The folks who thought it a great idea for the equine version of male vs. female in the mid 70's climate. I recall this clearly as a child. The genetics and inbreeding of Ruffian's line and the documented leg problems on both sides of her family....her perfect composition came at a high price to her indeed. No way can 1000+ lbs. of muscle and sinew run run run while supported by fragile legs the relative size of champagne glass stems, without disaster.
I doubt Ruffian is resting peacefully.........more likely she welcomed Eight Belles into paradise! "beter than (her cousin Secretariat).......well nothing more needs to be said, really! Girlfriend was perfect, all that is need to be known and said.
To Horselover801, you don't know what you are talking about! You wanna know what foolish pleasures trainer leroy jolley's father said in the winners circle? He said "Throw some real speed at her and the bitch crumbles!" So your comment about how they cared is wrong!! She did love every second of her racing career, Like any sport there are dangers. Do you think everyone stopped watching Nascar when one of the greatest died? I could go on and on but everyone thinks they have the answer.
Any chance that these tributes could be spared the atrocious, melodramatic drivel that, I suppose, the author of the video believes to be music? Bury the song at Belmont, too...point it toward the finish line if it makes you feel better. Disgusting
WOW! u did such an AWSOME job on this video. Ive seen the actual video on her, but this one touched me more. Just wondering, where did u get the moving clips of her?

Oh my .. She was so pretty ! It makes me wanna cry ! Buried with her nose pointed toward the finish line =(.
She was the GREATEST!!! Your video and song choice was excellent. Thanks! I also believe RTR's win at the Belmont was for Ruffian.
Its so good!
I had to change the channel too when she broke down. That was a very moving movie and the man who played Mr. Whitely in the movie was AWESOME!!! Ruffian was a special girl, no doubt. RIP girl
"As God is my witness, she may well be better then Secretariat!" Lucien Laurin said all that needed to be said about this queen of queens.
Movie is awsome and i will never 4get her even tho i wasnt there 2 c her
RR, absolutely exquisite with all the right quotes, some of those still shots of her, that aerodynamic form, so beautiful, so heartbreaking. Just bought a little book on Amazon called Licorice Daughter can't wait to get it. (did you know Secretariat is her uncle? Bold Ruler his sire is grandsire of Reviewer).
she was a great horse and her death was tragic and sad. she truely proved that racing is not just a colt sport.
This makes me want to cry i wish i could have met her:,(
Rip ruffian!!
she truly was the worlds greatest
This song is PERFECT for Ruffian! :)
I belive the great ones come back, Man O'War, Secretariat, Buckpasser, John Henry,...Ruffian...Rags to Riches...I met a man at Belmont...when RTR won, he yelled, "that was for Ruffian"....I belive it was...
I cry every time I watch this :'(
Hija de la belleza,el ciel y el viento...
love it
I agree with you but because of her they are Safer and we have learned better treatment for other animals as well it was sad to see her go when i mentioned the name in front of my Grampy (granddad) he almost started crying recalling memories of her... She will never be forgotten.
es war einfach ein so unglaubliches pferd.. !!
She was QUEEN of the race track......the problem was her pedigree ..she came from a line of soft bones..both her sire and damn both broke leg bones..and that match race dident help her fate obviously....greatest filly to ever run..will never be another 1 like her.....
All horses want to do is run and now Ruffian can run free.
The song and video make me want to cry:(
great video! hehe i cried 2 when i saw the movie! Ruffian is an amazing filly yes! the way she broke down is/was really terrible..
Ruffian is the best horse ever
exaura, yes, didn't Ruffian keep on going for 40-50 yards, after her leg snapped? The lady just would not give up, until she absolutely had to as her body failed her........really there are no words to convey her courage, her spirit and heart.

i sing this song as stupid as it sounds to my horse all the time! he loves it cuz he knows he's the greatest!
@diangofango Nice touch! Why not indeed. Especially if it's a fast car ;-)
Thank you for accepting the video responce! =-D
I love Ruffian! She is amazing and so is this video. If Ruffian were alive to see this she would love it! What is the name of the song? I love it!
Cameras....hard to admit tho it is, you have a valid point. It is said that what made Ruffian great (her tenacity and will to RUNNNNNN), is what cost her her life when she woke from the anesthesia. Where can I see the movie about Ruffian? Anyone know? I cannot find it anywhere. Beautiful video -- thanks for sharing it with us. Made me cry.
well its still rly sad that any horse dies
@SeeYaOnSondee Read "Ruffian: Burning From the Start". It explains clearly what happened.
The good die young
@ClemTigers77 she died from being too strong. thats amazing. ruffian is the queen of fillies!
The song is The Worlds Greatest by R. Kelly. It's in the description.
Great Job on The video!
By chance, who did the song and who is it made by?
yeah i agree with you, but tht hit on the gate was one of the causes of tht break
@moonwhisper101 i agree. i think she wouldve won if shes been undefeated and she won a race by 8 lenths!
how come there is no motion of rurrian on claborne farms web site?
@ClemTigers77 i meant sayin she was strong when she first hurt her leg and she kept going until she broke her sesamoid bone :(
They are finally learning that they can't use metal shoes. Metal doesn't absorb the shock, so the leg/foot shatters. Rubber shoes are the answer. They're slowly seeing the light.
@moonwhisper101 you realize it is foolish pleasure........
*sobs*
I knew her a little, but I don't know what happened to her.
So I want to ask you "can you say me what happened to her?"
@deana545 ok seriously she died because she was going so fast in her last race and she stepped wrong but kept going and it did more damage
@xXxJessicaPurdyxXx that's what I think. I think she DID win that race too. :)
@CamerasAreAwesome i think racing is great but they should wait to race them until they are 4 so they can grow more and be faster because they would be stronger

guys stop fighting over it, I know it is not fair, but theres nothing we can do now, and Im sorry about it to
@RememberRuffian no she does jumping and shes not against that!. she doesnt like that they race horses when they are that young at it gives them back and oof problems when they are older from riding them at a young age!

Girlfriend was perfect, all that is need to be known and said.

Well, now how could I conclude that this sacchrine-laced video sucked unless I watched it?

WOW! u did such an AWSOME job on this video. Ive seen the actual video on her, but this one touched me more. Just wondering, where did u get the moving clips of her?
