KARSTEN I just moved to Chicago and was at The Brutalist screening. When I saw you log it on Letterboxd, I was like “Omg, hopefully I run into him at the Music Box sometime!” But now you’re moving! Disappointing for me, but since I probably won’t be able to meet you in person, I just want to say thank you so much for all the films you’ve introduced me to. You’ve helped me fall in love with the art form in much more deep and meaningful ways than I knew possible. And best of luck with your move!
I was literally going to comment almost this EXACT SAME THING. i've lived in Chicago my whole life and started watching Karsten's "what i watched this month" during COVID to get some movie inspiration to keep myself busy during lockdown. I've always hoped I'd run into him sometime at the music box since he pretty much turned me into a "movie person." I've become so into film over the past three years or so, and it all happened because of Karsten!
My favorite part of Anora Was seeing the credits that my friend was the stunt double for Mikey Madison, I didn’t know she was in it so it was a nice surprise and I’m happy for her success
Heaven being in black/white and earth being in color was the most visually striking aspect of A Matter of Life and Death, imo! I thought that that was such a wonderful flip on what's to be expected of the gimmick. And earth was making mega use of the technicolor anyways, there were some gorgeous colorful shots that really blew me away! Great movie, great video.
Hey man, just commenting to say your reviews are really well written. You speak very eloquently and precisely in a way that makes my English major heart happy. Kudos!
What I watched on October: The Substance Confessions 2010 I Saw the Devil 2010 It's What Inside Infinity Pool Anora I was in a brighter mode this month, so I ended up watching some disturbing films that a scaredy cat like me was intimidated by😅. Out of this list, definitely check out the Japanese film "Confessions". One of the best revenge film that doesn't even use "direct" violence.
Thanks for highlighting these amazing upcoming films! In a time when theaters are dominated by blockbuster franchises, your videos highlight that there’s still a vibrant community of independent and authentic filmmakers and movie goers out there.
Look Back was amazing, you need to see if you get a chance. It's a Japanese animated film about two aspiring female manga artists that is only an hour long and it made me shed tears like crazy. Best animated film of 2024. I can't wait to watch No Other Land when it comes out next weekend in the UK. It's cool to see this much love and hype for a Brady Corbet film (The Brutalist). I am the only person in my circle who loves The Childhood of a Leader and Vox Lux.
This month I watched: -The Evil Dead -The Texas Chain Saw Massacre -Hellraiser -Bones and All -Brain Damage -Saw -Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum -The Lighthouse -Slugs -The Haunting in Connecticut
Inland Empire is such an experience, the most horrifying film I've seen. It has a nightmarish flow that really sucks you in - I was on the verge of mentally collapsing during it - the ultimate horror imo.
I also watched A Different Man and it was one of my favorites of the year! So thought-provoking, moving, and darkly hilarious. I got a lot of Being John Malkovich vibes from the film although it is far more than just a Kaufman-type film. Super excited to see what Aaron Schimberg and Adam Pearson do next!
On the topic of Winnipeg Karsten, you should watch the documentary “My Winnipeg” if you haven’t already. Such an entrancing documentary style and I’ve never felt like I had grown up somewhere more (I’m from New Zealand). Best doco I’ve ever seen.
I am floored that you did not see The Line. I was lucky enough to have caught it in theaters (it was available in one theater in my area...just one...a week after its premiere date), but it is a FANTASTIC study on the male experience and what happens when you put troubled, abused young men in an undersupervised environment. It's not necessarily a "male Barbie" in the way that many seem to think something like American Psycho is supposed to be, but it's as close to that as anything that I've seen up until now.
What I watched in October? Prometheus - 7/10 - _I have very mixed feelings on this movie. The ideas it presents are very interesting but the overall execution leaves a lot to desire. The final act is also really really weak._ Alien: Covenant - 4/10 - _Probably the most boring movie I've seen all year._ Alien: Romulus - 8/10 - _Of all the 2024 new releases, this is the movie that turned out exactly as I expected it to be like. Very ''by the books'' with a bit too many callbacks but at the same time it has some genuinely great moments of tension and action. Easily the best movie of the franchise since Aliens (1986)._ The Menu - 8.5/10 - _A great social commentary that is equal parts nuanced and ridiculous. Ralph Fiennes is a scene stealer._ Perfect Blue - 10/10 - _I've truly never felt this exhausted after finishing a movie. Perfect Blue might be my favorite psychological horror movie of all time (dethroning The Shining). Very uncomfortable but a must watch nonetheless._ Longlegs - 8/10 - _This is one of those movies I'd love to watch at like 2 AM winter night with no lights. Loved the gloomy and dreary atmosphere it has with lots of good creepy scares. Nicolas Cage is great as the title character, Maika Monroe on the other hand was fine, idk why she always had this "I'm so uninterested in all of this" face throughout the movie._ The Substance - 9/10 - _A tragedy disguised as a body horror and it does a great job at both. The Substance also had a lot to say about how us human beings value short term pleasure, often times we consciously do things that we know will have serious repercussions on our mind and body long term but still we ignore that for the sake of those dopamine hits and once we do stop, it's already too late. Anyways, it was the biggest surprise of the year for me. Highly recommend to anyone who hasn't watched it already._ Black Swan - 8.5/10 - _I wanted to check it out mainly because I heard that it was too similar to Perfect Blue, some even calling it a copycat and having finally watched it I do think that there are quite a few similar looking shots but overall they're quite different from each other. Without going too much into spoilers, in Perfect Blue it was more so the external manipulation that leads to Mima's (protagonist) psychological breakdown and other casualties while in Black Swan it was Nina's (protagonist) internal struggle, her obsession for perfection that leads to her psychological breakdown. There are definite similarities but calling it a copycat is quite a stretch and balant undermining of Black Swan. Anyways, talking about the movie itself, I thought it was really good, the movie didn't quite hook me the way Perfect Blue did but the final ballet was absolutely mesmerizing. The best part of the movie however are the performances, Natalie Portman was exceptionally good, really can't think of anyone who could've done a better job. Very well deserved best actress win for her._ Beetlejuice - 8/10 - _Really fun haunted house flick. Loved the concept of afterlife and all the practical effects and claymation. What really surprised me was the lack of screentime of the title character 'Beetlejuice' played by Michael Keaton who steals every scene he's in. Overall had a funny, whacky and a spooky time watching it._ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - 7.5/10 - _Honestly, I really enjoyed it. It had all the funny, whacky antics of the original with a more "high budget" look to it. The movie also had a good amount of practicality to it for a modern sequel. Most of the original actors are back and they disappear into thier roles as if no time as passed since the original. The part where it kinda falters for me is the plot, its much less focused than the original and I was particularly disappointed by the lack of Monica Bellucci in it. Her character had a great introduction but quickly gets shafted. Overall a fun, entertaining sequel, just wished it didn't wasted an intriguing subplot._ I Saw the Devil - 9.5/10 - _One of the most unhinged revenge movies I've ever seen. Equal parts poignant and sickening. Choi Min-sik plays one of the vile movie villains of all time. I do highly recommend it but its not a movie for the faint of heart._ The Silence of the Lambs - 10/10 - _A genre defining crime thriller that will forever be a timeless classic. This is up there with movies like Alien (1979) and Se7en (1995) as one of the most well structured movies I've ever seen. The performances are amazing and iconic. Howard Shore's score is brilliant. Also, the book is an amazing read as well._ I also started watching Paranoia Agent and so far I'm only 3 episodes in. That's it.
i watched the rocky horror picture show for the very first time in theatres. i didn't know anything about the movie going into it and i loved every second of it
This month I watched: Kill Bill Vols. 1 & 2 The Silence of the Lambs Love & Basketball The Fall Guy The Grand Budapest Hotel Definitely want to watch Anora with how much I’ve seen people discussing it!
In October I watched -Carrie -The Rite -Hapkido -The Magician -Encounters of the Spooky Kind -The Handmaiden -The Magic Flute -Treasure of the Ninja -Four Daughters -Alien -After the Rehearsal -Look Back -Revengeful Swordsman -Mr. Vampire -Eraserhead
SO GLAD you didn't miss the Inland Empire monkey hahah i'm imagining you finished the film and were like 'ok so that was... something... wait wasn't this supposed to be a monkey monday??'
Oh man, I literally clapped for your ratings of Frankenstein, The Blob & Inland Empire! Glad you liked them as much as you did. I was a little worried.
Heres what i watched ! Howls moving castle (rewatch) Creep As above so below (rewatch) Creep 2 Jonker 2 It follows Saturday night The fall guy (rewatch) Smile Mother! Venom 3 The fly
You went down a rabbit hole with Inland Empire. I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE. 🐇🐇🐇 may I suggest you place it on the Lynch rank right before The Straight Story.

Bro a friend of mine always said that the dark knight is better than The batman but i had never watched. So two days ago i watched them both and i still prefer the Batman just a bit
Idk if it’s fair to claim that the substance didn’t have a lot to say. I understand A Different Man may have had more, but The Substance connected to me and every female friend I have that saw connected with it even more. P.s. big fan of channel, just had to throw that in lol
Also, A Different Man isn't about female beauty standards, advertising, body capitalism, or body horror. They're going for quite different things even if body image is one topic they share.
@@moeezSoh yeah I’m sure. I haven’t gotten a chance to catch A Different Man yet, but I cant wait; got it on my watchlist. I could very well end up liking it more than The Substance. I just think with the amount of movies these days that actually don’t have anything to say, grouping Substance into that I gotta call foul 😂 especially I normally love Karsten’s takes even when I disagree (I have him to thank for giving Mulholland Dr a second watch, boy was that a great idea) but The Substance “not having much to say” jumps the shark a bit into pretentious territory.
As a woman, I’m really excited to see The Substance. I’m waiting for it to come out on streaming just cuz I think seeing it in a theater would be too overwhelming for me personally
Fear and Desire , Killer's Kiss , The Substance , The Seven Samurai , uuuhhh I do not think I remember the other movies I watched I remember these ones though so um here ya go
I watched Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (1.5/5) 12 Years a Slave (3.5/5) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (3.5/5) The Fall Guy (3.5/5) Robot Dreams (1.5/5) Abigail (3/5) Child's Play 3 (1.5/5) Resident Evil: Apocalypse (1.5/5) Evil Dead (4/5) It seems that I may have been a little grumpy this month
I also went to Howl's this month for the 20th anniversary! I'm willing to admit it's probably not the ~best~ Ghibli movie but it's my favorite, flaws and all!
putting that bleep in must have made you feel pretty relaxed, huh? too bad i know for a fact you said the minions movies under it and i'm prepared to defend that shit to my last breath
- Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story: 4/5 - The Crow (1994): 4/5 - The Illusionist: 4.5/5 - Joker: Folie à Deux: 3/5 - No Dogs or Italians Allowed (rewatch): 5/5 - Dracula (1931) (rewatch): 3.5/5 - Megalopolis: 3.5/5 - Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931): 4/5 - Bram Stoker's Dracula (rewatch): 4.5/5 I also just arrived from a screening of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and this movie rules.
The Martian. 4/5 Nightmare Before Christmas. 4.5/5 In the Mouth of Madness. 4.5/5 Talented Mr. Ripley. 4.5/5 Midsommar. 4/5 The Substance. 5/5 The Wild Robot. 5/5 Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. 3.5/5 Saturday Night. 3.5/5 Inside Out 2. 4/5
Started the month with The Wild Robot. As much as I loved Transformers, this was absolutely the best big studio animated movie of the year. One of Dreamwork's best. Next, I rewatched The Social Network. I don't have anything to add. It's a masterpiece. Lastly, I watched Venom: The Last Dance. I enjoyed the first 2, but would absolutely not call them good. It's probably just because I went in with the right headspace, but I actually would call this one good. I legitimately liked it. As for shows, I watched Agatha All Along and Like a Dragon: Yakuza. I really enjoyed Agatha. It was a fun time. I felt the ending was kinda underwhelming, but I think that was more due to my expectations being way beyond what they were actually doing with this show. Like a Dragon is very good when it's trying to be a direct adaptation of the first Yakuza game. Unfortunately, that amounts to around 1 of the 6 episodes of the show. The rest is probably a good show, but it's an absolutely terrible adaptation. So many unnecessary changes that just make it worse. Some major characters from the game are barely even in it, meanwhile one character from the game is 2 characters in the show, which adds nothing. The show ends on a bit of a cliffhanger that doesn't even remotely happen in the game. But, by far the worst thing about the show is that it spends a lot of time in flashbacks that all actively contradict the prequel game, Yakuza 0, which is one of the best games in the series. It feels like the writers didn't even know that game exists, and just made up whatever they wanted. Complaining aside, I will give them credit, episode 5 is actually a very good adaptation of the game, and the only time in the show that they make changes that I think actually improved upon the source material. Surprisingly great episode. Overall, if you're a fan of the games and you want to watch an adaptation, just watch the 2007 movie. If you aren't a fan, don't bother with either and play the games.
What I watched this October Deadpool and Wolverine The Boy and the Heron Kung Fu Hustle The Double Life of Veronique The Woman Who Ran Rio, Zona Norte Mo' Better Blues A Thief in the Night Brüno The Panic at Needle Park End of Watch The Hand A Room With a View
I usually watch a lot of horror movies in October but I didn’t really watch that many. I watched Night of the Living Dead, rewatched Poltergeist and it’s great as always. Then I watched the Conjuring and that film was great not the scariest horror film I’ve seen but it was still scary. Finally I watched for the first time I watched Its the Great Pumpkin,Charlie Brown and that movie is gonna be a classic that I watch every Halloween for the rest of my life.
I love A Matter Of Life And Death, though when we were sorting through a pile of Blu Rays it was the only one rated U. Did joke that even though the BBFC think my youngest niece (who was round at the time) could watch it, as she’s 18 months I don’t think she’ll get too much out of it.
The Wild Robot (5/5) A.I. Artificial Intelligence (3.5/5) Baby's Day Out (rewatch) (4/5) Where The Wild Things Are (rewatch) (2009) (3.5/5) Rango (rewatch) (5/5) Max Keeble's Big Move (rewatch) (3.5/5) Slappy And The Stinkers (rewatch) (3.5/5) Home Alone (1990) (rewatch) (5/5) Home Alone 2: Lost In New York (rewatch) (5/5)

karsten would you ever consider watching and reviewing some bollywood movies? BollyWednesday is a fun name!!! Id love to see what you think of Om Shanti Om
watched the frist two venom films this week... they were solid 3star affairs. nothing life changing, but i liked them. And I watched The Stuff ("you're not as dumb as you appear"... 'nobody is as dumb as I appear") and despite being v weird and quite loose it as so much fuckin fun XD
Hey! I have one question! How de you manage to have all that time to watch films and shows? I really struggle to deal with my responsabilities on a daily basis so I´d love to manage my time better. Do you watch films for a job or it is purely out of pleasure? For any anyone who can give me some advice on using the time better for watching films I´d really appreciate it :) I like your content a lot, its amazing keep on it!! :D
It helps me to make myself scroll social media less. Just need to remind myself, that I'm not getting anything much of substance out of it and that life is too short for that...movies are a time better spent.

11:02 What are you talking about Karsten? ****************** was amazing!
C'mon, don't yell at him, he doesn't feel like it this week
What is it??
@showbizroxs My Guess is Marvel
I agree with you Karsten. That monkey footage lost steam in the second half and became a little too perplexing as it went on.

Great vid as always, watched a a lot, but Kneecap really stood out as something new and refreshing, yet still very comfotorable and fun.
I also watched A Different Man and it was one of my favorites of the year! So thought-provoking, moving, and darkly hilarious. Very excited to see your further thoughts on Nickel Boys and The Brutalist. I think their full video worthy.
Great video :)
I also watched Cure for the first time this month! Such a great movie!

Watching Inland Empire followed by Cure is enough to make any man lose his marbles
Losing another good midwest soul to the corruptive nature of the west coast 🫡
I just watched "Self-Portrait as a Coffee Pot" (on Mubi). Only 24 minutes and is so so so good!!!!
4/10 for Wolfs is insane. That movie is so much fun.
Oh man, I literally clapped for your ratings of Frankenstein, The Blob & Inland Empire! Glad you liked them as much as you did. I was a little worried.

@gosti7586 not really, this month I finished my Batman and Superman marathon, most of them were first time watches
Bro a friend of mine always said that the dark knight is better than The batman but i had never watched. So two days ago i watched them both and i still prefer the Batman just a bit
damn shitty taste bro upgrade that shit
Saw Challengers, holy shit karst u we’re right ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Idk if it’s fair to claim that the substance didn’t have a lot to say.
Fear and Desire , Killer's Kiss , The Substance , The Seven Samurai , uuuhhh I do not think I remember the other movies I watched I remember these ones though so um here ya go
I watched

why are we still making war films
Its that time of the month boyzzzz

I cannot believe when people say this year was bad about movies. There are SO many gems if you stop complaining about Joker 2 and look over.
1:32 the fly is good…but I think Dead Ringers is better.
What version of The Descent did you watch - which ending?

why you moving to LA 😂😭it sucks over there
Howls Moving Castle was such a great film but my only complaint was that the ending was kind of rushed like it was on steroids 🤷🏻
moving to LA in almost 2025 is CRAAAAAAZY LMFAO
Cure is top 5 for me!

Lots of funny horror movies and good vibes this month
the brutalist is going to be the greatest movie ever made
And it cost only about 10 million. Truly shocking, when much worse and shorter movies cost more than 100 million.

KARSTEN! You Need To Watch Nosferatu
what are ur thoughts on smile 2?
Hey! I have one question! How de you manage to have all that time to watch films and shows?
I really struggle to deal with my responsabilities on a daily basis so I´d love to manage my time better. Do you watch films for a job or it is purely out of pleasure? For any anyone who can give me some advice on using the time better for watching films I´d really appreciate it :)
I like your content a lot, its amazing keep on it!! :D
It helps me to make myself scroll social media less. Just need to remind myself, that I'm not getting anything much of substance out of it and that life is too short for that...movies are a time better spent.
There’s this channel called Zeark literally copying your thumbnail style. Thought you should know
I just hit movie #1000 and finally watched fight club for the first time.
About to make anora my first watch of November
WINNIPEG MENTIONED
3:29 How fast it moves?
For me it seemed to go on forever.
I honestly think the film would've been better as a 40 minute short.
You guys ready for the madness in three days?
Honestly it’ll be entertaining
IDK the CFP committee makes at least a couple of correct calls.
No😭
i was tryna forget about it for a minute😣
Trump saying “I don’t know Tony Hinchcliffe” is proof he bent the knee. He’s nothing more than controlled opposition.
KARSTEN DO NOT MOVE TO LA 😟😟😟😟
Yeah moving out of that terrible country would be better so your tax money does not go to keeping genocides and wars going 🫶🏽
3.5/5 for descent 😢
