Nissan IPDM & Engine Relay Diagnostic Tips and Tricks

- In this video I show the steps and procedures I use to properly diagnose a bad IPDM And a bad engine relay. IPDM Stands for intelligent power distribution module. And Nissan uses them and all of their vehicles to control all the electric functions of the vehicle including the ECM. The ECM or engine relay or sometimes referred to as ignition relay is located in the IPDM. A bad engine really can give you a no start condition. As well as low power condition, also a stalling condition where the engine turns off unexpectedly. A bad eye PDM can give you issues with your wipers, headlights, AC compressor, condenser fan, and various other electronica components in the vehicle. When you purchase a intelligent power distribution module from Nissan it will come with a brand new AC relay and all the fuses already installed for you. I hope this helps some of you out. if you have any questions or comments feel free to leave something In the comment section and make sure to check the links in the description for the parts and tools are used during this video. Thank you for watching

One of the better videos I have seen on You Tube. Great job!
Great job especially helpful to us titan owners
Amazing video very informative and succinct. My Pathfinder is back up and running. ECM relay was the problem for crank but no start
How is the “ECM Relay” labeled in the fuse box for Pathfinder? Having trouble identifying, while working on this crank and no start condition. *Fuel pump is hit & miss when key is cycled.
@@homesold At 5 mins of the video it clearly tells you the start relay is on the bottom row and the third over from the right as you are looking at the board. You can swap it with another relay to see if it solves the start problem, however the start relay is specific so you cannot leave the swapped relay in place as it will cause other issues (It did on mine anyway). The Genuine Nissan replacement part is called a Control Unit-IP Part # 284B7-CW29E. I live in Canada and my local parts shop (Lordco) could not cross reference nor order it for me so I bought it online at a US parts supplier. I bought 2 of them for some silly reason so If you happen to live in Canada I will sell it to you for what it cost me plus mailing costs
You just became my hero
Thanks for this! Finally tracked down an intermittent starting issue on my 2007 Xterra with this video. MAF plug brown wire only had 5.4 voltage.
What ended up being the issue? Having same problem
@@coleimhuelsen hopefully swap your maf if reading is big difference compared to battery voltage
The maf plug is disconnected.@@justinmcquaid9763
@@justinmcquaid9763 You have no idea what you are doing. Why are you giving advise?
THANK YOU. This makes up for all the Bubba's I listened to over the last hour.
Lots of great tips thanks for sharing
you make it look easy. I towed my neighbors 2006 nissan titan home out of a gravel pit. 5.6 liters. He went through all these repairs..truck quit again the other day. he is in over 1500 bucks at this point. it has been a 2 years path of torture. I feel bad.. he said he has given up and selling it for 500. Truck looks very good. I welded his westin step for him for free. I felt that bad. I can't even joke about my 400k mile gmc that needs nothing ever. Guy is broken over this. I love diving into trouble shooting.. but this nissan, it is hell on earth. I even wondered if it had a nuclear element. No rhyme or reason, erratic hertz like discharges. New everything.. alternator IPDM, relays, battery connections and some fixes under dash. The last I encountered japanese monster like this was a 1987 subaru.
Ill buy it!
You gotta know the truck and how to trouble shoot.
@@MrPaknight It all can be fixed easily if you understand what you bought.
YEAH WRIGHT 😂😂
Thanks for the information.👍👍
thanks dude
Outstanding video, done really well thanks
Excellent video!
Hi. Does this self test on IPDM works on all nissan model equiped with IPDM?
Hi Aaron, my 07 Armada cracks but does not start. New starter relay, new plugs, fuel pressure and piston pressure seems normal but no spark. How should I diagnose further? Thank you.
Great information! Thanks bro for the video
I do the self test everything works except i don't hear the horn nor the ac compressor, but they do works
Thanks for the video. Did the test and all working as expected which showed the repair shop it didn't need a new ipdm. That said, I've got the SLIP light on since popping the horn relay without removing the battery terminal first and have no idea how to fix? Is it a bad wire from user the box? I've checked the abs sensors, etc. And cleaned main grounds. But still have the light on and therefore no 4wd
how thanks for all this useful info!! u are awesome. keep these videos coming!!
Great information in this video.🎉🎉
Great and clear video. Thank you.
I am running with my 2008 Nissan Titan AC at the moment, I need to test my Clutch that not engage but can't find the relay for it, any ideas out there.?
Hey there! Been having some random misfiring developing on my 05 frontier. I've tried swapping the two relays like you show in your video, I'm still getting the same 5 volts at the brown MAF wire while my battery is at 12.5 is it safe to say that I should replace the whole ipdm unit?
Does the IPDM self test also work on Infinitis? I'm assuming so since theoretically they are rebadged nissans.
Can this same test. Work on a 2014 Infiniti q50
Awesome video! Thanks
Where is cruise control fuses n relays located on my 2010 Nissan Sentra ?
I did the self test everything worked fine I am not getting voltage at the mass airflow sensor as described
Update - On October 13 2024 I swapped out my Fog Light Relay For the ECU Relay and all symptoms are gone and truck now runs like dream. 2003 FX45 Just turned 78k Yesterday. Hope this helps others. PS make sure to change the Relay you swapped out on the Fog lights so Fog lights don't give you trouble. I would also grab another relay as an extra as these relays are known to fail.
Great info My 2003 infiniti FX45 is giving me issues. It has all kind of weird codes on it as well when I put a Launch computer to it.
Instrument Cluster- U1000 Can Communication Circuit
Transmission Control- U1000 Can Comm Circuit, P1705 TP Sensor
Anti-lock Brake- U1000, Can Comm Circuit
ECM (Engine Control Module)- U1000, P1212, U1001
AWD (All Wheel Drive) - U1000 Can Communication Circuit
How about I just buy the ECU relay and swap it out, drive the car around if no issues, then I'm good? Of course after it is passes all the Diagnostic tests? If not then most likely IPDM needs replacement?
I have jumpy RPM, Dead temperature Gauge, then RPM Gauge dies, Dash lights come on, ac stops blowing, Transmission doesn't want to shift and when it does it kicks like a horse. Once I shut off vehicle or disconnect battery and wait a minute or two symptoms go away, but come back with a few minutes or up to an hour later.

What can cause a 2008 xterra to shift from 2H to 4H on it's on while driving thanks
In summer, i have no problems starting my 08 Titan. In winter, it sporadically/intermittently does not start in the morning. Has good battery and turns over strongly, just no ignition. I plug it into battery charger and it starts right up. Fuggin annoying! Any fix suggestions?

Hey I have a 2009 Nissan titan 5.6 2 wheel drive back in January I would not start so I changed the crank sensor it did not start I sprayed it with starting fluid it started and it would all day without spraying it so I would just spray it in the morning and everything would be good this month it won't start I have to spray it when I start it what do u think is wrong and it has 220 thousand miles on it if u can point me in the rite direction I would greatly appreciate it appreciate it
Hello, Aaron thx very much for all videos about Nissan Titan. My question is the self-test apply to Nissan Titan 2008?
Can it be activated with a OBD2 diagnostic scanner?
Appreciate you man
Good video! I'm having a issue with my 06 titan. Sometimes while driving I lose power to the gauge cluster and the engine loses power, have no response when pressing the gas pedal. Headlights and taillights stay on and within 5 to 10 seconds everything comes back on and works normal.
Did you ever figure out what this was? Its happening to me and its the strangest thing ?
Did you figure out what the problem was? My 04 titan is doing something similar.
What was the fix for this?
It was the idpm ecm relay. Nissan has a recall on it. I never took it to the dealership to fix. I ordered the relay from ebay and fixed it myself. Think it was a $8 relay.
It's located in the box between the battery and firewall on my 06 titan
Great Video, the dealer replaced the IPDM on my 2010 Titian and it still stalls at random. it does start after, any ideas? I've added grounds, Removed the CATS, and replaced the fuel pump.
Did you ever resolve this issue?
hi! I've a Nissan Nv300 1.6 145cv x82 2017 (van), and since some electrical problems I had with the charging system back in december (fixed), my front wipers are not working. According to my mechanic, he tested the wipers motor, the relay and everything seems ok... he saids that may be some electronic module... so I really want to do this IPDM selfcheck. The problem is that this VAN has not any "door" button that you can just press. Do you know how to do it in a VAN without this simple button? Ntw Thanks a lot for the video!!!
I have an '04 Infiniti QX56 that has loss of power issues during driving. Not a complete loss but still has enough power to get off the road. But if I step on the throttle to pass briskly, the vehicle won't upshift and RPMs won't increase. Acts like bad O² sensors. But if I pull off the road and turn the vehicle off and restart it,it drives ok as long as I don't get heavy on the throttle.
Is this an example of a bad ECM relay? Thanks for the video and any more information.
Good night is that work on those Nissan note right hand drive
Hey man can you tell me what relay runs the brake lights I don’t see it on the back of the cover
Would this test work on a 2003 nissan maxima
Very helpful thank you!
I have no tail lights or license plate lights 2013 sentra??? Any thoughts..all other lights work, there is nothing labeled tail fuse
Is my IPDM fries if none of the small fuses are giving voltage ? Car is in but I get no reading . . From the small fuses on the left side of the double row
If it won't rub the test does that mean ipcm is bad
My self test button is missing I fished out a white female plug light blue wire from the hole .
Would the button hsve a pigtail w male half of plug ? I'll keep fishing
Ive been given one of these Titans. 2004. It intermittently like at a stop light, will not move in drive. Shut engine then back on, everything fine. Any ideas?
What a great, clear and concise video! THANK YOU THUMBS UP Hope you are making money on views :)
Well I replaced all 8 of my relays but it was turning but no spark. I’m going to restep the process and take off all harness connections and relays and replace and try a crank again.
Thanks for your video. I have a 2013 rogue. The vehicle will not start after it’s parked for 10-20mins. It will only start after 30min. I think it’s a IDPM problem. It is possible to reprogram it or I have to replace it? What’s your opinion?
What ended up being the issue
will any scan tool perform the nissan self test at all?
Excelent video
Thank You as Always!
Excellent
Aaron Hines I have a question. When I go to turn my car on my fuel pump won't kick on. I tested the voltage of my fuel pump fuse and I do not seem to be getting voltage when the car is off or when it's on. But I didn't get to see what the voltage does right after I turn it on. Do you know when the fuel pump should have voltage when I turn the car on (not start it)? Like would the voltage normally show up for just one second while the pump primes or should it constantly be showing voltage? I'm trying to determine whether I have a bad IPDM or a bad fuel pump. Thanks.
Question Aaron...our ‘06 Armada won’t start, it just clicked loudly. We had lights on dash and everything inside the truck, so we didn’t think battery. We’ve tried to jump it just in case. Originally when the issue began, we swapped relays and it cranked and cranked after putting in a brand new one, but then wouldn’t crank again. I ran the IPDM self test this morning and it didn’t go through everything like it was supposed to. Now I don’t have the dash lights anymore or the click when I go to start. Any ideas?
GREAT!!
HOw hard is it to replace a ipdm? I have altima v6 2003 btw thanks
Do you know how to reprogram the Ipdm on a 2013 Nissan Murano sl or somewhere I can go without being lied to and ripped off.
I’ve heard that the emc relay can cause the vehicle to quit while driving and you get stopped and it will start right back up. Any truth to that by what you’ve seen? Thanks
yes, particularly bad in 2005-06 model years. National Transportation Highway Safety Admin has quite a bit of info on this and recalls associated with it. Also has info on recalls for the transmission issues completely failing because of a faulty coolant system part leaking coolant into the transmission case. 2005 was the first year of the second generation Frontier with major changes to everything. Crank sensor issues are problematic also. I thought I got a great deal on my 05 Frontier with less than 70K miles until all the electrical started occurring on me. Been dealing with them now for nearly 18 months. Nissan is no help but will work on it for a crap load of money. And it seems that all help forums are full of smartasses that lend zero help. Hopefully you do not have a 2005-06 Frontier, Pathfinder, etc. that went through that model upgrade or if you do it has already had the major issues fixed properly. If not, stay away, far away!!!!!
So I have a 07 m35 and I have 12v coming to the maf connecter but I have cranking no start so compression is good and I replaced all the timing set and I noticed I have no spark at all and no fuel atleast when i have all the plugs out I don’t smell any fuel and ecu was replaced with an junkyard one which my buddy did so even when the original ecu it did the same thing it started with a p0300 but even after plugs n coils replaced still
AARon does this also hold true for the 2013 Armada? we have a lady in our church group with the 'sometimes it doesn't start but it's turning over and i smell gas" symptom
Ever find a solution?
GREAT KEEP IT GOING
Would this trigger the diagnosis even it it's on lock mode?
Thank you Sir
If cooling fan doesnt come on during test-what does that mean??? Cooling fan doesn't work at normal op temp OR with ac on
Does this ipdm self test work on all Nissans? And what year is this titan?
How do you replace a blue relay? I'm having a bitching issue with it
What if the AC clutch does not engage
I have the same question. My clutch didn't even click. Everything else worked fine.

Did you ever solve your problem
On 2010 Nissan Frontier cranks no start my matco and snap on scanners will not read ecm how do I check the idpm its self before replacing, and if im getting 12v to the ecm plugs could the idpm still be issue?
Any luck?
So I grab a used IPDM for my 2007 Titan because there is no power from IPDM to condenser fan..... I installed this IPDM, great to see the fan works great now but not without sacrifice.. my junkyard IPDM, will not energize my lowbeams, I learned this the dumbass way when later when it got dark i notice my bright new LED upgrades aren't present on. Highway signs and road ahead.. I get a IPDM to fix a problem that comes with its own problem,..Titan and armadas aren't abundant in my local spots.. this was the only IPDM available.. I am just going to order the upgraded newer IPDM.. no more salvage modules.. always a flaw, had similar experience changing a Dodge tipm.. you know...Chrysler's equivalent.. troublesome power control ... replaced one that wasn't engaging ac..That one had all function except left lowbeams.. dontget used tipms or ipdms.. always another dead function.. I swear..
If I use another used ipdm does it need to be re programmed by Nissan or no?
Great testing nivr one
So if it doesn't process the self test
Did you ever find out about this? I'm in the same bot. However, my car turns on and runs and won't die, but the ac won't blow cold, defrost button won't work, wipers headlights don't work but the high beams just stay on instead. Can't turn off high beams and some lights came in as well. Traction, vdc off, SES, tire
What scan tool you recommend
Would this work on a 2015 Nissan Frontier?
What’s the updated part number for the black ipdm
Good video. No one else mentions 12V at the MAF! I DONT' have 12V (4.5v), and swapping the relay made no diff. Is the IPDM replacement my next option or is thereanother work around to rule it out? (have the white original one). The self test powered everything up as expected. It would be worth a donate to your channel for assist. Thx!
for the xterra and frontier the brown wire is 5v i believe
My 2008 Nissan Titan is going into limp mode and says it has a voltage A high and I have no idea what that means. How could I test this

Hey... nice video...I have an Armada 2006 which suddenly the rear door do not open electronically, passenger window don't works, any of the locks only open/close with the alarm beeper.. I thought that replacing the power module can fix this, but now I see you mentioned some different things that can cause different issues... Any idea? Thanks in Advances!!

Dtc:trotil relay stuck.... Plz help
very good video. I am trying to figure out what is wrong with my 2010 armada. I bought it used 2 years ago, and clearly it has been tampered with. (ie previous owner cut and spliced xm radio wires back together, a set of nonfactory rca wires ran to the rear passenger quarter panel) anyway its throwing the park neutral safety circuit code p0850 it cranks runs and drives aside from it rarely starts on the first several cranks.
recently I have changed out plugs coils injectors new cats. still no help.
the first year I had it I replaced the fuel pump, the throttle body & tbps assembly, and park neutral switch in the transfer case.
however changing the coils plugs and injectors did make it start behaving differently it still struggles with starting. before it would take several tries to start & on rare occasions would start on the first try. now it starts stalls out and fails to start several times before finally starting. if I have recently cleared the codes it will idle and drive like normal if the codes are not cleared it will idle higher than it should (around 1k rpm to 12oo) and it throws p0850 , p2101, & p0172 codes
any idea what could be causing this issue?
Great vid. I have a 2011 frontier throws a maf code but after i replaced it, the engine light went off and it ran like crap for about 20 mins then the engine light came back on and the truck started to idol and run just fine again. Could this be a bad ecu relay going out as you mentioned in this video?
The truck wants to idol rough for a second when the ac is engaged and im parked or at a light also.
Very helpful...
Thanks
A bro where is the fuel relay at?
It's made into the IPDM
How do you replace ipdm on Nissan maxima
I need help with my 2008 Titan. If I don’t run it for 5 days and if it’s cold outside, it won’t start. A few mechanics work on it but nobody can fix the problem

Where is the starter relay? I couldn't find it on my Nissan 2012 sentra
Thanks for the video. One question how long would that self test run if you did not shut off the vehicle?
The test will run 3 times before ending
Would this work on an Infiniti g35? I’ve had two 350z’s so I’d imagine so.
Yes!
Thanks 🙏
Where is the fuel pump relay? I have an 04 Armada. First i would have to turn the key multiple times for it to engage the starter. Had starter Changed that worked for a few days. Then I changed the ignition switch that worked. Then one morning went out to start the car and it just goes to 1000 rpm and dies like it isn't getting gas. Doesn't matter if I step in the gas or not just starts and immediately dies.
Could a bad ipdm cause me to go through 3 fuel pumps in less than 2 years? Also my titan did sputter and shut of while running and I never had lowbeams.
Dealing with the same thing now, but now if I have my brights on it cuts the truck power as if bad fuel pump and the gas gauge quits working. Headlights off and truck has full power. Low beams don't work
@@joaquinquintana1807 that could be it , check all your fuse boxes.
@@joaquinquintana1807 hello and same issue. Did you fix it and how?
