I use 1 quart glass vinegar bottles.
Drill 1/4" hole in the cap. Fill bottle, screw cap back on, shove the neck into the dirt. (make sure hole doesn't get clogged doing so)
Problem with plastic is that if you don't make a air vent, the bottle collapses and watering stops.
AND you run through water faster if you do have a vent.
With the glass one, as the soil dries, the bottle lets out water until there is a slight vacuum. Bottle draws air in and the process repeats until the soil swells from the water and stops the process.
As soil dries, it shrinks and the process starts over again.
This can be done with wine bottle (neck will be deeper in the soil though) that has a screw on cap.

@@Dansk55 I also use steak sauce bottles and wine cooler bottles without lids.
Yes they tend to run out a lot faster but if you prewater the soil first, they do last about a day.
I Also use two of those 5-gallon water jugs for water dispensers. Wide open mouth. Shove it in the soil neck down and it can last a whole week! Make sure those do not have the vent holes in them Some do some don't.
You can also put in some fertilizer (WEAK solution - about 1/2 or 1/4 strength so as not to over fertilize).
I use plastic milk jugs with a small hole in the bottom near the side. Replace the cap just right and it will last about an hour. Cap too tight they won't water and collapse. Too loose and water runs out quickly.
I bought a 'Rubbermaid' style trash can. Drilled a hole near the botton about 3" up and on the side.
Inserted aquarium air tubing and hot glued both inside and outside.
Ran the outside part to a gang valve for aquarium air.
Has 3 tubes from that. Adjust the drip rate for about 1 drop every 2 seconds. Will water for about a week that way (30 gal but can only use about 27 of it).
Can needs to sit high though - higher the better. Put mine on logs about 20" in diameter. At least a foot or more of it stops dripping as water level gets about 1/2 way.
      That one does a 4' x 9' flower garden.
Wish I could upload pix of my stuff.

      @@crazysquirrel9425 Hi! Very interesting solution!
You can make a video and upload it here on UA-cam.

    • @crazysquirrel9425
      @crazysquirrel9425 2 роки тому +2

@@ElenaRattenni Well I have no way to upload anything. Sorry.
      About the trash can -
I relocated it and put it about 3 feet off the ground (placed it on 36" wide and about 10-12" thick logs from a tree trunk).
I ran some 1/2" irrigation tubing along some cattle panel.
I spaced out some home made air pruning pots (laundry baskets) under that cattle panel (is is about 18" up off the ground to allow room for baskets).
I used the tool to puncture the tap holes in the tubing where I wanted dripper lines to go, attached the 1/4" lines, and installed the 1/4" irrigation valves on the ends. This is so I could control the drip rate.
I have about 8 laundry baskets with tomatoes and 5 landscape quality black plastic pots alternating. Those got drippers too.
On a 29 gal (says 30 gal on the label) I can get 3-7 days watering out of a fill up.
Adjusting those valves can be challenging sometimes. Baskets need about 1-2 drips per sec but little pots need about 1 drip every 5 seconds.
If I could make the can higher I might have better control but then I could not fill it nor clean it.
Yes, it has to be cleaned from time to time as algae will grow even in that - can is dark green so a little light does get through.
Arbor Mist (sp) wine bottles seem to work well (about a day maybe).
Those do not replace watering they just even out the moisture a bit.
Current problem is soil temperatures are waaaayy too high (90+ deg F).
Plants are seriously heat stressed. Even in the shade (I moved them out of the hot afternoon sun).
I may have to buy bags of ice to keep soil cool. Sprinkling some ice on top of the soil will cool the soil and water at the same time.
Temps here have been 90+ and going up to and over 100F.
When temps go above 85, you can get blossom end rot easily.
Ideal temps for tomatoes and most other plants is between 55F and 85F.
Humidity about 40% - higher than that plants begin to have trouble transpiring.
Lower than that they can transpire too much as the roots can't take in enough water.

A big tip when cutting the X in the bottle top. To avoid cutting your thumb, hold the cap from above while creating a bridge with your hand, then cut down into the cap. You might also be able to add a bit more downward pressure using the arch of your hand.
Holding the cap as shown can be dangerous. If the cap slips or the blade goes over the edge of the cap, the side of your thumb is exposed and in line with the cutting edge of the blade.

  • @prashantwadkar

Why take the trouble of making hole in the hard bottle cap and then immerse the bottle upside down in the soil making sure it wouldn't topple. I simply made a very tiny hole in the bottom. The bottom of the bottle is comparatively softer and the bottle can sit on its own bottom easily in the soil.

because the tip is supposed to be under the soil level to provide more even watering of the pot

since it is inserted in potting mix for self supporting it, it may not work after some time when the potting mix obstructs the holes drilled for passage of water. Ideal solution would be to cut the bottom portion of the bottle so that water can be filled, use a bamboo stick and attach this bottle (in upside down position with holes drilled in lid) with the help of string or in some other suitable way. This way no way for dirt to obstruct the water flow. Thanks
