I do something similar, but actually bury the bottles and cover the tops loosely with colored lids and I leave a good size funnel near the areas and use that to pour [comfrey water] into the bottles----no spillage and very quick and easy....hardly ever have to water tomatoes or peppers and don't have to worry about it....
It seems like a good idea to bury the bottles in the ground so there is less evaporation, but 1) how do you check on the level of water left in the bottles that are burried in the ground so you know when to replenish the water? 2) how do the roots of seedlings reach the water dripped from the bottom of the bottles?
Hi sorry for delay. Good question----I collect big red knobby lids or yellow lids because the bottle openings are hard to see in the straw or what I use for soil coverage around the plants. I also make comfrey leaf "compost tea" in big buckets and feed the plants with this. They love it and I don't have to water plants very often and don't know over or underwater. It's worked very well and easy to install when you dig the hole. I hope you can use this tip and will like it. Thanks for contacting me. Good luck.
