  • In the course of many years collecting and studying buttons I couldn’t help but notice the continuing stream of fresh people to the hobby with questions regarding military buttons. This is a subject that often takes a background in other areas of collecting and a gradual trajectory of familiarization to avoid feeling overwhelmed or discouraged. The result is this first attempt at a fairly straightforward overview of a typical accumulation of decent quality U.S. military buttons one may encounter, with a little bit of everything in the mix.

In this video presentation we examine a typical cross section of a better quality assortment of U.S. military button lots found on eBay and elsewhere. This is a “crash course” of sorts familiarizing the collector or reseller valuable and time-saving knowledge of what to expect in these groupings.

Thanks for stopping by! Definitely a good idea to keep on the lookout, there’s still quite a few sleepers out there turning up from time to time.

That's a really nice group of buttons! I'm lucky to find the occasional cool one thrift store shopping and garbage picking. I always learn something from your videos, thanks for doing what you do.

Glad you enjoyed it! I probably rushed through this one and missed a number of interesting examples in that grouping. Believe it or not I actually keep lots together until I get around to making a video, it sort of forces me to avoid procrastinating. There are quite a few beginners that get bogged down in modern fashion buttons so I wanted to show what actual military buttons look like. I’ve found that you rarely find groups like this at antique malls or shops. You may see where a dealer has an old mason jar full of buttons, but if you look at what’s in there the buttons are pretty much always not valuable or particularly old. It seems like dealers or pickers have someone in their list of contacts who they go to with military items, but sometimes we do get lucky!

I think at 2:42 the W.G Mintzer backmark dates from the Civil War until 1870.

Nice buttons brother! Looks like you might have done a little better than breaking even on the cost guess it depends on how you market them now? That being said I sure like the "West Vriginia State" seal "Pettibone Mfg" "Cincinnati" b/m button. Would look nice in my button display? lol Enjoyed the video!!

I appreciate it brother. ☺️😉 I regretfully overlooked a number of the good ones in this presentation, in particular an 1840s Infantry button you can actually see in the video as well as a “hand chased” CW officer button and an Indian Wars “applied eagle” import button, probably for an epaulette.
