You should be taking note of the finishing positions in the bottom left, rather than the dislikes. Quite a few of the top 10 were first place winners! (And most likely people who weren't happy with them winning disliked the videos afterwards, negating the dislike ratio as a mark of quality.)
Right? Does my frickin head in that he's ripping them all apart and trying to surmise why they're so "unpopular", when in fact half of them were top finishers.
Think she was the first female artist with a no 1 album in the US..? Or something similar…And don’t forget her breakthrough song; It’s a heartache! She also sang the original version of Simply the best (much more known with Tina Turner, not my favourite song, but still a big hit). But Jim Steinmans Total eclipse is the greatest.
@@jimmy.9947 Get off your high horse. Most of us know who she is in the US; she is very famous. Some people just don't know who certain celebrities are here and there.
This is just bad list without any context, most of those dislikes are based on toxicity of the contest - country against country (sometimes with good reasons), songs being weird etc. Most of those songs are good and some even very good (for their genre ofc). You can notice that many of them won.
Yep I wanted to mention that. A list has a lot of Armenian and Azeri songs (Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict), Russian and Ukrainian songs (Ukraine war), Israel songs (Israel-Palestine situation), LGBT performer songs etc. It's clearly a mix of bad songs and politically downvoted songs.
Just because a "song" wins Eurovision doesn't make it good! There's been songs that have finished in last place that have been better than the winning song that year! Heck every other song was better than Toy in 2018 or Amar Pelos Dois in 2017 and we all know Ukraine's last two wins had nothing to do with the actual songs and everything to do with Crimea and then Ukraine itself being invaded by Russia! The last actually good song to win Eurovision was Only Teardrops in 2013!
@@franohmsford7548 not a single point of yours is even remotely true. You may like some songs over others but you clearly have no appreciation for music with that statement, and i'm saying that while not being average listener of popular music (just not listening to radio and new hits).
Jamala was actually great.. she was emoting her song in the clip. The song is about mass deportation of her grandmother and her family members.. so it is not about the singing at that point.. 🙂 Liked your vid nonetheless.. the confusion is kind of fun. 😁
"What is Eurovision? Is it about sending a message in the world? Is it about your singing skills? Is it about giving a performance?" Yes. It's all of this and more. It's not a singing competition, it's a song contest. So think about it as the Olympics but for music. Every country tries their own thing. They may send the catchiest song they have, or the strongest/better singer, or maybe they want to send a message. It's up to every country (there's rules though, they cannot be overly political for example). And we just sit, drink, vote and enjoy.
"Olympics but for music" erm not really, the Olympics represent the best in the field. Very few of these people have ever been more than a Karaoke singer, the proof is in the pudding, ABBA the only real success in what 50+ years, hardly a marker for success.I suppose Celine Dion, but i think that proves my point :)
It's no longer a song competition at all. It's all just too political. A lot of the countries vote for their neighbors no matter what type of sh*t is presented. Also, some countries what give "progressive" performances get votes even though the song was awful. THere are also other political messages and agendas, and way too much weirdness and nudity. It was a family type of show. I remember that every spring our whole family would sit down to watch, and vote, and root for certain songs. etc. Now... it's not something I could call family friendly anymore.
@@Lina-lq7jm it's always been political, why do you think Isr*el won back in the 80s? Or Germany with that song for peace? Or other more recent entries? And it's still as family friendly and enjoyable as it was when I was a child. Times change.
If you listen to earlier instances of the Eurovision, you'll see more songs in the country's original language. The thing is that languages other than English, French, German, Italian, kept getting shafted, and so everyone kind of moved towards singing in English. Also, with pop music being internationally sang in English since the begining with bands like The Beatles, it became very common for pop music everywhere to be sang in English. Also, I dont know if you noticed, but a fair number of the songs in the top 10 were 1st places, which probably only got a lot of dislikes because of people who didn't want them to win.
It may surprise you to hear that a few of the entries on this list were actually CONTEST WINNERS (!!!), so some winners have been more divisive than others. These won their year respectively: , #8 Portugal 2017, #6 Ukraine 2016, #5 Austria 2014, #2 Israel 2018.
Hi Connor, You should listen to the whole performance of Jamala - 1994. There is a whole history in the song. You just heard a little part of the song. Hope you like it. 😁
youve tottaly misunderstood this video , noting is wrong is any of them , point is the song is just disliked from some percentage of people nothing else , u just cant please everyone :)
The contest was started after WW2 as a way to bring people together, so in a way there has always been somewhat of a political element to it. Also, the full name is the Eurovision SONG contest, so it's not necessarily about having the best singing voice. Different countries do different things every year, they can send cheesy/silly entries or an artist that's a bit of a meme. There can be opera singers, powerful ballad-singers, an artist with a strong message - they can interpret the competition anyway they like (within the rules of course) and I think that's what makes it so great. Sometimes a message will resonate with audiences and help them win (see Jamala - 1944 from 2016). Other times a heavy metal band will win! (See Hard Rock Hallelujah by Lordi from 2006). It just depends on all the factors of that particular year :)
Eurovision is supposed to be about the song thats why it's called song contest it.not about the singing. The writers win award. But it's very political..with certain countries voting for eachother ie Greece and Cyprus. Roumania and moldova this year everyone knew ukraine would win the sympathy vote
For context the Ukrainian song "1944" that came at number 6 is about Stalin's genocide and deportation of the Crimean Tatars and Nazi collaboration. It won the contest in 2016 (2 years after Russia's annexation of the peninsula) it's likely a shed load of those down votes were from Russian bots
Moldova 2018 deserved much more love tbh. And btw Connor, most of the songs with lots of dislikes will be because of politics. People from Armenia will downvote a song from Azerbaijan and vice versa. Same with Turkey and Greece. Or Russia and Ukraine. Or Israel and other countries. Or some Balkan countries between themselves. Other songs with lots of dislikes is because they won and some people didn't like it. Btw yes Cascada had a few hits in the 00s and early 10s with Everytime We Touch, Evacuate The Dancefloor, Pyromania (probably didn't hear this one in the US).
Okay, it's really important to note that the ESC is not a singing competition but a SONG competition. It's in the name - Eurovision Song Contest. I feel like most American reactor's are almost solely listening to the voices of the singers, but that is not what the show is about. It's not x-factor or got talent, where the voice is judged for the voice alone. This is about the song, the show, likeability, camera angles, and so many other aspects (including the singing of course), and how all this is transported through the tv-media and to the viewers, but it is not a singing competition. I thus feel it is a huge misunderstanding to judge it like it is just that.
27:17 Conchita Wurst is a drag queen and not transgender (performs as a woman is a man all other times), but yes it was a topic that was heated in 2014 causing Russia to pull out of the contest because Eurovission refused to take the drag queen out so ehhh 🤷♀️
It's a song writing competition. So you do want a good performance to showcase your song .... And truth is if as a songwriter you are also looking for fame, you write a song to be popular all over Europe, so English is obviously your language of choice.
Here's what I can explain so far. The Spaniard at the end cracked his voice on the high note. The German was not supposed to be competing (came second place in their national selection. The winner backed out for personal reasons.) The band from Iceland brought politics into a strictly nonpolitical event (they showed Palestinian flags somewhere during the show). Like the Austrian, the Ukrainian singer also could not be justified by the 5-second clip (she won that year). Her song "1944" was controversial because it was about Russian crimes against Crimean Tatars (her ethnicity) in.. 1944 (which did not count as political despite whatever the Kremlin was up to because this was already part of old recorded history). Was also surprised to see some of the winners here. But I guess the dislikes were bitter fans like what another commenter said.
For the record, I quite liked Salvador's Sobral (Portugal)'s entry in 2017, but the style of the song was a nod to the way old Eurovision songs used to sound like, so I guess people didn't like it (even though he won with the highest amount of votes ever). I think there was also some backlash for him not being able to sing during the rehearsals for the show because he was recovering from heart surgery, where his sister (who wrote the song) had to step in. But, yeah, obviously, it's almost impossible to separate the Eurovision from politics. Neighboring countries tend to vote for each other and different genres almost compete against each other without any consideration for what the songs actually sound like; like how a heavy metal band from Finland won one year pretty much just because it was a heavy metal band. It's honestly a mess, but it's a beautiful mess and a tradition that represents what Europe is pretty well, at least according to what I think.
Salvador Sobral that year was different because the rest of the people were too "noisy", like too much dance and that kind of stuff and that one was different, calmed and beautiful, honestly, it was what i needed at that moment, i wanted that one to win, not because of Portugal being next to us (i'm a spaniard) but because i really liked that song and it was in the native language, something important to me. For me and my family is was magical.
@@Meryawey late reply but it was rivally with Bulgaria that Kristian kid, he had fans and it was favorite too, probably lot of hagte from that, same as Netta (besides Israel problems) since Fuego was also vary loved
About that Jamala's Ukraine song, I think that was more political dislikes. In song were singing about history, how many of their people were killed by X country... so I'm guessing that X countries' people and their "friends" pressed the dislike button...
Ik you said you thought Ukraine 2016 but honestly the whole song is absolutely beautiful and I don't think it was necessarily the best clip of the song, but it came 1st!
Pay close attention to the competition place. Alot of those songs were competition winners- and only have so many dislikes because people were annoyed that they won instead of their personal favs
You will listen to people say "it's a song contest, not a singing competition" but in the end the main purpose of this contest since the very beginning in 1956 was unite nations through music (after a devastating war). I think that message should still prevail.
Some of these are Eurovision winners! The likes are pretty subjective - some hardcore Eurofans spam UA-cam dislikes. Also, political likes and dislikes are at play 😅
This video really needed more context haha Most videos in the top-20 or so are there for political reasons or because they did really well so people went to give them dislikes right after the contest. But yeah, would be cool if you dived more into the Eurovision-world! I think there are some "Eurovision explained"-videos on UA-cam, those would be a great place to start from
Winners will of course have a lot of dislikes, becaue of disgruntled losing nations. Jamala/Ukraine was also "controversial" because it was quite critical of russia and their invasion of Crimea in 2014. Jamala is a Crimean Tatar, the group that got ethnically cleansed by russians in 1944, and once again got displaced by russia in 2014. She's a pretty great singer actually, a very emotional song.
Also, many press dislike for reasons other than quality of the song. It can be hate for a country, homophobia, transphobia etc. Jamala's 1944 is one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking songs to ever win ESC. I also love Jedward. They're fun. 😄
A bit of backstory on number 22 (Albania, Rona Nishliu with the song Suus). A few days before the final there was a huge accident where a bus (mostly with students) drove off a mountainside, left 12 people dead and the other 21 injured. So during her final performance she was filled with emotion. Also the refrain of her song translates to: Let me cry... cry... cry... Cause this is the best I can do now Cause this is the best I can do now
@@JordiVanderwaalIf you watch the full performance, you notice that at the end she takes a moment to take a breath and sing the last two words. But those two words are so filled with emotion. In my eyes that was the most beautiful moment of the song. And in the end, she did make a lot of people feel her sadness considering she placed 5th in the final.
Did you notice at 11:00 that it was the Australian entry! If Australia can be in the Eurovision Song Contest so could the USA. Re The Polish song at 12:00 - I think the reason some didn’t like it was that during the refrain it had a woman hand washing cloths in a wooden bucket in a very suggestive way.
In essence it's actually not a singing contest. It's a song contest. The best song should win, but of course performance and politics play their role now.
Since Eurovision is a song contest and the song’s writers and composers are also winning trophies, I’ve always just assumed that the judges on the various national juries look for more technical aspects of song writing and composing as well as marketability (radio friendliness). Based on the songs that have won the jury’s votes alone each year, I think that’s a fair assessment of what they likely are judging on rather than the message, lighting, dancing, effects, etc. The singer or singers performing the song live is part of that technical aspect whereas the lighting, props, stage effects, dancing, etc is probably mostly ignored by the judges when it comes to their scores, same with the message of the song. If you go back and look at the songs that won the contest before the television audience also got to vote, I think it reflects this also (especially in the context of the full competition that year, not in the context of overall winners over the decades). Once the television audience got to vote, there does seem to be a lot more done by the national delegations to also do things they think will appeal to the television audience to get their votes. In general (most not always), the winners of each year’s contest have generally received a decent amount of votes from both the juries and the television audience...though the winners of each individually don’t always align (i.e. the song that gets the most points from the jury and the song that gets the most points from the tv audience aren’t usually the same songs and the winner on average is the song that scored in the top 10 in both; hence why the winning songs might have a higher dislike to like ratio percentage because folks might not be happy the song won over a more popular song by the tv audience. There can also be political reasons the song was disliked or it requires more context in seeing the performance alongside other performances within the same year’s contest to understand or it can be that the song itself was well liked, but there was a mistake or poor part of the live performance, or in some cases it can even go back to the song wasn’t the one many wanted to win a national competition that chooses what that nation sends to Eurovision; basically there’s numerous factors for why the like to dislike ratio is what it is and it isn’t necessarily a reflection on the quality of the song overall in the long term. Context is everything to trying to understand why songs get the dislikes to liked ratios they do and long after the contest the songs’ streaming numbers may not reflect the videos’ dislikes either. It doesn’t mean the songs weren’t popular, the video was just using YT info as it was at the time).
From memory Eurovision was an idea to help boost Europes Morale in the post WW2 years in a fun way by the Swiss, and also to try to promote a sense of friendship between the countries participating. Edit: Hulio Englasias & Bonnie Tyler were more famous as music stars in the Uk pre-2000's. Edit3: There have been some joke entries into the Eurovision, Ireland has done this deliberately to avoid winning multiple times in a row.
I definitely disagree with you on the Ukrainian winner of 2014! Many people didn’t like that it won, but they’re wrong! And I’m a professional musician from the musical kingdom of Sweden!
The stage and lighting rig for 2014 (e.g. number 28) was even more ridiculous and impressive in person. Probably my favourite of any Eurovision I’ve been to (although 2015 was also excellent). Something you might not know about Eurovision is that these songs aren’t first heard during the competition week: they’re released and marketed across Europe well in advance. Some countries do it from October-ish. These are heard on the radio and people get familiar with them so it can be jarring when a live performance is bad even if you like the song or the studio performance (even though it’s the song you’re meant to be voting for)
The 2022 winner of Eurovision was Ukraine. It won via the public’a vote. The UK was the better sing but the people wanted Ukraine to win with 630+ points which means hundreds of thousands of people voted for them
You asked what eurovision is, is it about a message, singing, performance? It's a song contest, it's about the songs. It's not the voice, it's not a 'singing' competition, but a 'song contest'. A song contest is about the song, a singing competition is about the voice, like 'the voice' show, this song contest is not 'the voice'. The artists on eurovision are not mindless robots who are only allowed to sing in their native languages however much you would prefer that, and they are allowed to sing about important subjects. Ukraine won singing purely about the Crimean occupation, Jamala 1944.
Me again.. you didn't even pay attention to the results. Some (at least 3) of the Top 10 were the winners, so the dislike percentage is not because the song was bad, but because ppl who had other fave's to win express their disappointment with a dislike. I was the whole time: wait, where is Germany? (my country) But we made it twice in the Top 4. Expected more, since we mostly come dead last. As for your understanding... Songs don't have to be bad bad to have a bad result or like percentage, most of the time a song is disliked, it's because it's boring or cheesy or out of date or bad singing. You only hear snippets. We heard the full song, and some are just out of tune. Thanks for reacting though ;)
The eurovision song contest started in 1956 it was an original song contest held annually and was designed as a promotional event to promote the different countries in europe and to encourage tourism.
The songs have high percentage of dislikes mainly for three reasons: 1) politics, 2) winners - people who preferred another song clicked dislike for the winner, 3) people not happy with their own song - meaning that e.g. germans or british were not very happy with the song that represented their country
Bonnie Tyler is a legend (Uk 2013 - she was 62 at that time), she just had fun on the stage because ppl, sadly, don't really vote for UK. Some of the top 10 are disliked because are some winners. lol Ppl were sour bcs their favs didnt win. U should react to the full songs for some of them.. like 2016 ukraine which u said was awful.. or 2017 israel, also austria 2014. give it a try. :D LE - If u want to understand more about this contest.. react to the musical that explains almost everything - > "Opening revue with Måns Zelmerlöw & Petra Mede" (He's the winner of 2015)
Bonnie Tyler is in general an absolutelly horrible singer... and the song in the list is a nightmare! she is a nightmare! thats why she should be in that list!!!
@@stahlgewitter69 Just because you don't like 'husky' voices that doesn't mean she's a nightmare. lol And on the Eurovision stage she was having fun singing a nice song. She wasn't there to win. What's with the hate?
Ok these are here for the following reasons (probably): Politics - sometimes Eurovision countries just hate each other - Armenians and Azerbaijanis are probably downvoting each others videos, some Greek entries get downvoted by Turks and vice versa, also the 2015 Armenian entry was about Turkish genocide of Armenians - it was originally called Don't Deny not only are the Turks still doing that they're probably downvoting the song too, Russia even before Putin got them kicked out were still interfering with Ukraine and actually invaded the Crimea in 2015 - also what really annoyed people is they were sending love, love, peace, peace type entries between 13-15 which many (myself included) found nauseatingly hypocritical to the extent where they were booed at the contest and actually a lot of downvote for 1944 was probably because it was a comment on that Crimea invasion and the Russians and those who don't like politics downvoted it, its probably a factor in a lot of Israeli downvoted entries. Conversilly the Icelandic guys waved a Palestinian flag at the Tel Aviv concert - and some people think they shouldn't have hence sending them a finger. Anti LGBT+ - some people in the world are dickheads about this and will downvote queer themed entries - Austria's winner and the French one. Overated - if a song is a percieved jury fav that got treated overly generously ar the competition over fan favs then it gets hate - both the Aussie entries have that especially the 2017 where the guy had a voice crack in the semis and STILL qualifed in 6th and finished in the top 10. Also if your song was ropier or percieved as such by fans of a song that didn't qualify for the final when you did or did better than they will hate you and downvote in kind. - Letting the side down - sometimes no one hates a country's entry more than those in the nation it represents because they consider it to be really embrassing and downvote accordingly both the Germany and Polish 21 entries consist of comments of Germans and Poles slagging off their own songs, Spain also has this - out of the box - because some stuff is just divisive sonically and the haters like to make their views known - Iceland 2019 and the Israeli winner have that in spades on top of offending people of aforementioned political stuff. - exploitative - Poland's 2015 entry and Russia's 2017 and 18 are loathed in some quarters for milking their singer's diabilities. - sometimes they're just crap - Spain had a vocal crack in his performance and I'm sorry but Germany is that for me.
Europe: Let's have many millions of people watch our songs and vote on which are the best. Someone making this list: Yea. And then we are going to look on what thousands of youtube watchers say to decide which are good, right? Europe: Nothing against you man, but the idea behind this list is so stupid. 4 out of the 8 "worst" songs won the competition and millions of people voted for them.
Interesting list, I don't watch the festival myself. But there was so much writing about Hatari (17) from Iceland that I, who listens to cynth a lot, became curious about them. So I will thank the "scandals" around Eurovision for finding a new favorite band.
You also have to keep in mind that sometimes in Eurovision songs get dislikes if they either sound too generic or too much like last year's winner/ top3.
About that german song, from wiki.... The song is also a subject of controversy due to its alleged similarities with other well-known songs such as "Titanium" by David Guetta, to which a possible plagiarism is discussed - That's probably why it has such a high dislike to like ratio.
What is eurovision? its simple... You just do you, and just hope among the 40 songs and artist doing themselves, you will be the one that appealing to the most of the viewers.. There is no formula or a rule book about how the song and performance should be. one formula can work one year for one country but not for another on another year. there are winners which had songs about love, heartbreak, loss, war... from every aspect of life. A ballat a banger a rock any genre can win. you just need to be one who relates and communicates your own message better than anyone else that year on that stage. the stage is yours for 3 mins. its your platform to say and do whatever you want. not everyone does it for the win. yeah its a competition. but still there have been artist just wanted to say what they want to say even though they knew they are not going to win. Eurovision is an opportunity. you can promote yourself or your country or your political belief or your abilities.
Honestly, one of the funniest videos I've ever watched. Your reaction to Albania was PRICELESS!! I couldn't stop laughing for several minutes and kept rewinding your reaction to the screaming. I LOATHE that song! lmfao
I can see two possible paths for a song getting lots of dislikes: 1. It did very well and people are mad 2. It did very badly and people (from the same country) are mad
eurovision is not a singing competition, eurovision is a song competition!!!!! THIS IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT. The prices gets not the singer, the composer and writer!
Bonnie Tyler is not from Texas you plank she is from the country of WALES in the United Kingdom. The surname TYLER is a very British name. 💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪💙💛🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
Yes, Eurovision is about singing, music, message (i.e. lyrics), performance, choreo, stage presence, camera work, props, lighting design, visual design, culture, language, creativity, emotions... If you haven't reacted to "What is Eurovision? (Semi-final 2 2016)" I would encourage you to do so, it's both fun and enlightening! lol
some of the dislikes u gotta take in consideration its a competition , and salty fans from other countries might dislike a song just because another country qualified in their place or something like that , or they were "not fan favourite , why are they so high placed? i will dislike this "
Did you notice 4 of the top 10 had won the competition? And Germany in 3rd who was good, was suffering with laryngitis and missed a few notes, but I thought she was great on the night.
OK, this the Eurovision Song Contest. Eurovision is an organization created to raise and standardize the technical and production quality of National Television so there would be compatibility across the Continent. This was necessary as smaller nations could not afford to produce and broadcast in their own language. The competition and its staging is a hugely complex test of production, broadcasting and voting coordination. The actual content is largely irrelevant ( I only really like Classical Music). When Ireland first won the right to Stage the Competition with Dana's 1970 winin Amsterdam, The National Broadcaster, RTE, had to borrow much of the technical equipment from the UKs BBC.
number 6, the one you called awful, is considered the best eurovision song if all time by a lot of people 😂 a lot of these are disliked because of where they finished, not because the song was awful.
a lt of these are just controversial also for example if it's Israel it will always get dislikes no matter what for some of these like North Macedonia people were just mad it got a lot of points from the jury so they decided to give it a dislike #8 was actually the WINNER and people disliked it because they wanted someone else to win, but te guy won both the televote and jury #6, #5 #2 are also winners
Music is emotion. So if they get point for politics/sympathy or for the music/staging, no one really knows. I feel like it is really sad to see entries like Austrias Conchita, Ukraines Jamala and Armenias Genealogy here. Conchita is a great singer, but yeah a man that can dress like a sickly thin women. Jamalas song was so emotive about how soldiers/politicians destroys civilian lives and Genealogy, they were all armenian singers from all over the world since there was a genocide on armenians by the turks so they fled to all corners of the earth. They sang about how the world has not yet confirmed that it was a genocide that were committed. Maybe that is confirmed nowadays however.
There used to be a thing to have a song about ( world values) ( humanity) (peace) but thats driffted away now....Conor remember 50 countries are voting if they dont understand what youre singing about .your chances are lower...maybe ? Then you have culture differences. . Whats liked by one culture may be hated by another.and sadly politics comes into voting......sweden will vote for norway and finland......france will vote for belgium...etc etc all the eastern europeans vote for each . other...there really is no telling now why ot who votes for who.....its just a music comp now....each country has their own competition for weeks to find a representative to take part in the big show. .. its a massive event millions are involved
Most of these songs have higher likes than dislikes. Most of these songs were fan favorites of the year. Some of them were the winners of the year. So absolutely you don't need to find reasons to agree with the few who dislike these songs.. Also, with competitions, especially ones in which people spend their own money voting for their favorites they get upset when their favorites don't win, so they go and downvote the one that won.
you've not realised that alot of the highest dislike are bcs people obviously disagreed with them being winners. And also the clips they showed weren't terrible, obv you seen the high dislike and thought well it must be terrible and allowed that to cloud your judgement from 10 seconds of a 3minute performance
Well Eurovision is about a lot of things, but the prime motive for its creation was to bring war torn Europe back together after ww2 through music, so it's not just about singing and performance, it is also about sharing and appreciating culture, promoting a message of peace etc.
There are many political and complicated reasons why some are disliked. Eurovision is incredibly political in nature. So it's not just because of song quality.
Yea, you didn't get the point of the video and the criteria. Everyone has already pointed out the main things - it's a show, a contest, it's not necessarily about the singing but can be (e.g. Sweden 2012 (Loreen), Austria 2010 (Conchita) Netherlands 2019 as winners). What I'm looking for when I vote is something standing out to me - it can be vocals, it can be a theatrical performance, it can be a melody or riff that gets stuck in my head. The Jury has 4 criteria when they judge the songs. Vocals are only one of them. Connection with the audience is another, choreography and staging as well. Positions much more important in this reaction video than the dislike % - they need to be read together to understand the dislikes. Finally, sure, politics can play a role in the voting, but if you look at who won in the past years, aside from Ukraine, I don't think you can say any of them won because of politics. People in Europe have different tastes in the contest, and it shows in voting patterns you see and the winners. Ukraine is the only country who won twice in the past 10 years. Once politics, and the other was a political song, yes, but as it was in Ukrainian, at the time none of us really got that message - the passion in her whole performance won it for her, but it was close - and her vocals were incredible there. I really wanted Australia to win that year (2016) though. Finally, Jedward is a prank in general - they play off that in their messy performances :)
The Ukranian winning performance was actually stunning (if you watch the whole thing). The lyrics were a stab at Russia so I'm sure it got lots of dislikes from there. Like LOTS. And this was before Russia invaded Ukraine. Armenia and Azerbaijan are in conflict... they will also bombard videos of each other's Eurovision songs with dislikes.
Jamala is awful? Sorry to say that but you have no taste. Her being in this list is just because her being patriotic and Russians disliked the song. The song tells about the displacement that Russians did to Tatar Turks during tge Second World War. Eurovision is not just a song contest. If you are not familiar with European politics and history, you can’t understand Eurovision.
The irish twinns you ask if they was a joke been realy popular for younger. They participated twice. This is the other time: ua-cam.com/video/pXouSYabDig/v-deo.html
The year after ABBA won the Eurovision, Teach-in took to the stage with this song. I was 11 years young at the time, and I still get a kick when I hear it today: ua-cam.com/video/447LKTYDv4Y/v-deo.html
What is it about? Well it’s a competition, but it’s also to connect with eachother, And it’s about a lot of things, you don’t need to send out a message or have the best voice or have the best performance It’s how it’s delivered and if the song and all speaks to you If 9/11 happened and an American singer would compete, they wouldn’t get any extra points, maybe a little, if USA as a country competed and the song was good enough, yeah you can definitely get sympathie votes, but it’s not granted Take Ukrain for example, they won this year, and yes by a landslide because of the war, but it was a song that would have ended up high anyways
Sadly in Eurovision we send no name singers. No singer star wants to be associated with Eurovision. In Romania, people ran from the Romanian National Television that is the partner of the contest, because they are politically affiliated
You never heard of Bonnie Tyler? "Total eclypse of the heart" , "Holding out for a hero", THAT Bonnie Tyler, she was big in the 80's
I was surprised too
Think she was the first female artist with a no 1 album in the US..? Or something similar…And don’t forget her breakthrough song; It’s a heartache! She also sang the original version of Simply the best (much more known with Tina Turner, not my favourite song, but still a big hit). But Jim Steinmans Total eclipse is the greatest.
He is from the US, why are you even surprised 🤷♂️
@@jimmy.9947 Bonnie Tyler had 6 billboard top 100 hits including a nr 1 and a nr 3 hit song
@@tomekgulash If you think Toy and that godawful rubbish from Portugal is music then it's you who has no appreciation of music!
For me esc song gets a dislike if its boring. And of course when i dislike something but thats rare
Well said!
Jeah most of all its a song WRITING competition
3 of them were Winners of the competition, incuding Conchita Worst, Netta & the Portugise chap.
4*
Jamala from Ukraine also won
It may surprise you to hear that a few of the entries on this list were actually CONTEST WINNERS (!!!), so some winners have been more divisive than others. These won their year respectively: , #8 Portugal 2017, #6 Ukraine 2016, #5 Austria 2014, #2 Israel 2018.
Hi Connor,
You should listen to the whole performance of Jamala - 1994. There is a whole history in the song. You just heard a little part of the song.
Hope you like it. 😁
Agree
youve tottaly misunderstood this video , noting is wrong is any of them , point is the song is just disliked from some percentage of people nothing else , u just cant please everyone :)
so Connor... music is not your toppic :)
I understood that politics had no place at Eurovision… though Jamala’s “1944” and others just prove me wrong. 🤷🏻♂️
7:40 wrong, it's a song contest, not a singing competition, tha quality of singing is important but not the most important here
Moldova 2018 deserved much more love tbh.
Did he just call Jamala awful? She’s amazingly talented
In your opinion.
In song were singing about history, how many of their people were killed by X country... so I'm guessing that X countries' people and their "friends" pressed the dislike button...
you will react to that, sure
Ik you said you thought Ukraine 2016 but honestly the whole song is absolutely beautiful and I don't think it was necessarily the best clip of the song, but it came 1st!
Pay close attention to the competition place. Alot of those songs were competition winners- and only have so many dislikes because people were annoyed that they won instead of their personal favs
You will listen to people say "it's a song contest, not a singing competition" but in the end the main purpose of this contest since the very beginning in 1956 was unite nations through music (after a devastating war). I think that message should still prevail.
It is Not a singing competition but a song competition.
Some of these are Eurovision winners! The likes are pretty subjective - some hardcore Eurofans spam UA-cam dislikes. Also, political likes and dislikes are at play 😅
This video really needed more context haha
Most videos in the top-20 or so are there for political reasons or because they did really well so people went to give them dislikes right after the contest.
It's a song competition and not a singing competition.
Also, many press dislike for reasons other than quality of the song. It can be hate for a country, homophobia, transphobia etc.
Jamala's 1944 is one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking songs to ever win ESC.
I also love Jedward. They're fun. 😄
It is just about dislike, 1 like vs 1 dislike is 50%. not related to the actual performances
A bit of backstory on number 22 (Albania, Rona Nishliu with the song Suus). A few days before the final there was a huge accident where a bus (mostly with students) drove off a mountainside, left 12 people dead and the other 21 injured. So during her final performance she was filled with emotion.
Also the refrain of her song translates to:
Let me cry... cry... cry...
Cause this is the best I can do now
Cause this is the best I can do now
Oh wow, I did not know that. I just thought that was part of the performance and that she just felt the song.
Eurovision is a SONG contest. Not a SINGING contest. Message, performance, and vocal talent are a part of it, but it’s mostly about the song.
Don't forget the butter churning lmao
Nah the US isn't entering. The countries outside Europe that are participating are outliers
Over 30% dislike Portugal winner 2017 Salvador Sobral! I dont get it!! Its such a beautiful song! Why cant people hear it, and FEEL it?!
In essence it's actually not a singing contest. It's a song contest. The best song should win, but of course performance and politics play their role now.
Feels weird to see the Spain 2017 entry without *that* moment
Only missed it by around half an octave
Hi Connor, Its a 'song' competition not a 'singing' competition, having said that the judges are half 'judge panels' but half public votes (phone in).
I definitely disagree with you on the Ukrainian winner of 2014! Many people didn’t like that it won, but they’re wrong! And I’m a professional musician from the musical kingdom of Sweden!
Remember: it's s song competition, not a singing competition
The stage and lighting rig for 2014 (e.g. number 28) was even more ridiculous and impressive in person. Probably my favourite of any Eurovision I’ve been to (although 2015 was also excellent).
Something you might not know about Eurovision is that these songs aren’t first heard during the competition week: they’re released and marketed across Europe well in advance. Some countries do it from October-ish. These are heard on the radio and people get familiar with them so it can be jarring when a live performance is bad even if you like the song or the studio performance (even though it’s the song you’re meant to be voting for)
YT compression does no justice for LED stage. It ALWAYS looks better on TV than even the livestream
The 2022 winner of Eurovision was Ukraine. It won via the public’a vote. The UK was the better sing but the people wanted Ukraine to win with 630+ points which means hundreds of thousands of people voted for them
Great reaction! Some of these songs need a bit of context to understand why someone may have disliked it.
Some of the top 10 are disliked because are some winners. lol
Ppl were sour bcs their favs didnt win.
U should react to the full songs for some of them.. like 2016 ukraine which u said was awful.. or 2017 israel, also austria 2014.
give it a try. :D
LE - If u want to understand more about this contest.. react to the musical that explains almost everything - > "Opening revue with Måns Zelmerlöw & Petra Mede" (He's the winner of 2015)
Bonnie Tyler is in general an absolutelly horrible singer... and the song in the list is a nightmare! she is a nightmare! thats why she should be in that list!!!
@@stahlgewitter69 Just because you don't like 'husky' voices that doesn't mean she's a nightmare. lol
And on the Eurovision stage she was having fun singing a nice song. She wasn't there to win. What's with the hate?
Ok these are here for the following reasons (probably):
Politics - sometimes Eurovision countries just hate each other - Armenians and Azerbaijanis are probably downvoting each others videos, some Greek entries get downvoted by Turks and vice versa, also the 2015 Armenian entry was about Turkish genocide of Armenians - it was originally called Don't Deny not only are the Turks still doing that they're probably downvoting the song too, Russia even before Putin got them kicked out were still interfering with Ukraine and actually invaded the Crimea in 2015 - also what really annoyed people is they were sending love, love, peace, peace type entries between 13-15 which many (myself included) found nauseatingly hypocritical to the extent where they were booed at the contest and actually a lot of downvote for 1944 was probably because it was a comment on that Crimea invasion and the Russians and those who don't like politics downvoted it, its probably a factor in a lot of Israeli downvoted entries.
- Letting the side down - sometimes no one hates a country's entry more than those in the nation it represents because they consider it to be really embrassing and downvote accordingly both the Germany and Polish 21 entries consist of comments of Germans and Poles slagging off their own songs, Spain also has this
- out of the box - because some stuff is just divisive sonically and the haters like to make their views known - Iceland 2019 and the Israeli winner have that in spades on top of offending people of aforementioned political stuff.
Europe:
Nothing against you man, but the idea behind this list is so stupid. 4 out of the 8 "worst" songs won the competition and millions of people voted for them.
Eurovision is mainly a song competition.
Eurovision is about bringen (European) countries together through music. Btw, it's not a singing competition, but a song contest.
About that german song, from wiki....
The song is also a subject of controversy due to its alleged similarities with other well-known songs such as "Titanium" by David Guetta, to which a possible plagiarism is discussed
-
That's probably why it has such a high dislike to like ratio.
Number 43 on the list is actually one of my favorite songs ever. I don't understand that it has so many dislikes
Some of these were winners of the competition.

Yes, Eurovision is about singing, music, message (i.e. lyrics), performance, choreo, stage presence, camera work, props, lighting design, visual design, culture, language, creativity, emotions... If you haven't reacted to "What is Eurovision? (Semi-final 2 2016)" I would encourage you to do so, it's both fun and enlightening! lol
22:30 is because he won the competition, with a non-english song, and a chill jazz basically
some of the dislikes u gotta take in consideration its a competition , and salty fans from other countries might dislike a song just because another country qualified in their place or something like that , or they were "not fan favourite , why are they so high placed? i will dislike this "
Portugal 2017 won the contest. The song is one of the most appreciated by the way.
Ukraine 2016 was amazing and so is her voice… it’s only so “disliked” because people were jealous she won
Eurovision Song Contest is not a singing contest it is a song contest ment to bring nations together and yes share a message.
It is not a singing competition it is a song competition. It is the wrighter/ and the country that realy winn.
Eurovision is a SONG contest, not a SINGING competition :)
When Ireland first won the right to Stage the Competition with Dana's 1970 winin Amsterdam, The National Broadcaster, RTE, had to borrow much of the technical equipment from the UKs BBC.
number 6, the one you called awful, is considered the best eurovision song if all time by a lot of people 😂
a lot of these are disliked because of where they finished, not because the song was awful.
They only have dislikes because people are jealous they won and their favourite didn’t
a lt of these are just controversial
also for example if it's Israel it will always get dislikes no matter what
for some of these like North Macedonia people were just mad it got a lot of points from the jury so they decided to give it a dislike
#8 was actually the WINNER and people disliked it because they wanted someone else to win, but te guy won both the televote and jury
#6, #5 #2 are also winners
Ireland's entry "My lovely horse" best ever
Not a singing competition, it's a SONG competition.
There's a video with all the winners of the contest from the beginning until now
Iteans that these entries are popular, people always dislike anything that is popular just to pretend that they are against any system
12:34 you need to watch the whole performance. They churn butter and wash clothes in a manner that won the public vote and lost the jury! 😂
Hatari was lit idc
you've not realised that alot of the highest dislike are bcs people obviously disagreed with them being winners. And also the clips they showed weren't terrible, obv you seen the high dislike and thought well it must be terrible and allowed that to cloud your judgement from 10 seconds of a 3minute performance
Well Eurovision is about a lot of things, but the prime motive for its creation was to bring war torn Europe back together after ww2 through music, so it's not just about singing and performance, it is also about sharing and appreciating culture, promoting a message of peace etc.
also on likes and dislikes, as you said yourself, people can dislike for many different reasons, a lot of these get dislikes because politics
There are many political and complicated reasons why some are disliked. Eurovision is incredibly political in nature. So it's not just because of song quality.
Conchita was Amazing!
3:53 most likely either Everytime We Touch or Evacuate the Dancefloor
I was 11 years young at the time, and I still get a kick when I hear it today:

What is it about? Well it’s a competition, but it’s also to connect with eachother,
And it’s about a lot of things, you don’t need to send out a message or have the best voice or have the best performance
It’s how it’s delivered and if the song and all speaks to you
If 9/11 happened and an American singer would compete, they wouldn’t get any extra points, maybe a little, if USA as a country competed and the song was good enough, yeah you can definitely get sympathie votes, but it’s not granted
Take Ukrain for example, they won this year, and yes by a landslide because of the war, but it was a song that would have ended up high anyways
someone tells this guy we don't usually care abt how good they sing if the song is boring please-
Sadly in Eurovision we send no name singers. No singer star wants to be associated with Eurovision. In Romania, people ran from the Romanian National Television that is the partner of the contest, because they are politically affiliated
I don't even dare to watch this.
