- Weekend Drive from Los Angeles to Mammoth Mountains Ski Resort -4K
Driving from Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles to the Mammoth Lakes Mountains Sky Resort Area via US-101 N, CA-170 N, I-5 N, CA-14 E, US-395 N route.
The drive is mostly in pleasant weather, except the gusty winds and snowfall in some places.
This road trip is a must do winter drive for Los Angeles residents.
People like to get away from endless summer and get breath of fresh and crispy mountain air, ride a snow board once or twice and get back to the perfect sunny Los Angeles, California.
Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is a large ski resort in the western United States, located in eastern California along the east side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the Inyo National Forest.
Mammoth has more than 3,500 acres (1,420 ha) of ski-able terrain, serviced by 28 lifts. The area has 3,100 ft (940 m) of vertical, rising to an elevation of 11,059 ft (3,371 m), and enjoys a long ski season.
The resort was founded in 1953 by Dave McCoy and, from 2005 to 2017, was owned by the Starwood Capital Group.
The ski area is located on the north side of Mammoth Mountain in the volcanic Long Valley Caldera.
Overnight guests stay in the town of Mammoth Lakes, California and occasionally in neighboring towns such as Bishop and June Lake. June Lake's ski area is also owned by Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.
The top of the mountain has challenging chutes and groomed as well as mogul runs. There are eight Unbound terrain parks. Unbound Main, adjacent to Main Lodge, is highly praised by extreme snowboarding and skiing enthusiasts, and is one of the major attractions of the ski resort.
Mammoth Mountain also has one of the longest ski seasons in North America, which averages from the start of November to Memorial Day.
The resort occasionally enjoys a longer season, as in 2016/2017, when it opened on November the 8th and did not close until the August the 6th. The 1994-95 season was Mammoth Mountain's longest, over ten months, with the resort operating from October 8 until August 13.
The 2016-2017 season was the second snowiest on record, with 618 inches (2010-2011 with 668.5 inches is the resort record), and it stayed open until August 6, 2017.
January 2017 was the snowiest month in Mammoth history, with 246 inches.
Mammoth receives an average of 206 inches of snow per season, though during the 2010-11 season the resort recorded a record accumulation of 668.5 in (1,698 cm).
As recently as the 1980s, senior citizens could ski on Mammoth for free.
As of 2006, those aged at least 80 years may ski for free.
In 2017, Mammoth Resorts announced its sale by Starwood to a partnership of Aspen Skiing Company and KSL Capital Partners, later named Alterra Mountain Company.

Made this drive countless times in the early 70s, when it was 2-lane road from Mojave to Red Rock Canyon, then 2-lane from after Red Rock Canyon to Pearsonville. My favorite area of California -- Owens Valley to Mammoth Lakes.
Ordinarily when I'm in SoCal I take I-15 to US-395 and take that route up. No my favorite way to go but it's faster from Temecula.
I haven’t been in Mammoth in almost 9 years and I got pretty emotional watching this. Thanks for the video!
what
4:02:00 What you can't see as you start up Sherwin Grade, on account of the snowy weather, is that it's straight uphill on a 6% grade all the way to Sherwin Summit -- a vertical rise from Owens Valley outside Bishop of about 3,000 ft by the time you get to the summit. You are, in essence, driving on top of a pyroclastic flow that poured over the south rim of the Long Valley supervolcano when it erupted 760,000 years ago. This pyroclastic flow averages 600 ft thick toward the volcano's rim before it thins out just outside Bishop. It's a measure of how large and how violent the eruption was.
In this shot you also can't see the most imposing escarpment along the Sierra Nevada as you leave Bishop and start up Sherwin Grade, and that's Wheeler Ridge -- a 5,000 ft prominence that you swear looking at it goes STRAIGHT up. As rugged as it gets; and if that sight doesn't humble you, you're dead; fall down.
Southern California drivers are not always used to driving in snow. It becomes a challenge and can be very slippery. Reducing your speed is mandatory and helps you keep safety in mind.
How slow should you be driving?
is this the actual audio of you driving? I am asking because i'm wondering how do you drive that far without listening to music? I would go crazy haha
Excellent!
Gotta make sure your vehicle is in top shape cause I would not want to be stranded on that highway.
what types of tire do you guys use in California??
You got there when it was still easier. I rolled in at around 2 am and it was all packed into ice from tom's place to bridgeport
When did you go there Sir?
@@kevinl6158 the same night this video was taken
Dont forget the Jerky place in Olancha
Me and my girlfriend and her mom stayed in the Hilton universal studios hotel u see on the right side on the US 101 last month 🌊
Question, how is the weather end of November? Is a AWD recommended? I see that towards the end of this video it is snowing a lot so I wanted to ask if end of November is snowing? Is there road closures?
I'm a Mammoth local- there's no way of knowing what November's weather will be like. It could be heavy snow, it could be sunny and in the 50's. Definitely bring AWD.
@@HolgerRuneFanwhat month do you think this drive in the video was in?
I am on this endless road right now.
Are you running winter tires?
@dash cam tours what kind of vehicle you driving? Sounds like a Chrysler or Dodge.
Honda Clarity PHEV is my guess
Do i still need snow chains even though i have a 4 wheel drive jeep
This is 14fwy near Palmdale
Did you need chains for the tires?

Inspiring kooks like there isnt enough
Cuantas horas hay en tren desde los Angeles a mammoth
No hay un tren entre Los Angeles y Mammoth. Necesitas viajar por carro.
Starts heading west from 5490 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, California
They’ve pulled in for a poo and sandwich 😂
Let me say this is NOT a must do winter drive for LA residents. So many people come up completely unprepared for winter driving conditions and think that their summer tires are just fine.
Hopin my rav4 awd with new all season tires will do fine, made the big bear drive today no issues so hoping its the same with mammoth
@@lbeyyt6581 bring chains regardless though
I’ve never used chains, but I have 4wheel drive, rear locking diff, and falken wildpeak snow tires on my Tacoma, thinking of making this drive Nov/Dec but have never driven in snow

wait...I thought our mighty governor mandated a stay at home order? Where did you stay in a town with no hotel service?
5 hour video?? What a waste of storage space on youtube
Lol
I enjoyed it. Better than most of the crap on UA-cam.
