I'm a huge fan of the original and think it's the far superior film, but this remake was actually pretty respectful of the source material, even if the humour tried a bit too hard at times. Your review was spot on.

The most interesting aspect of the movie is that it pokes fun at the badass female trope too, essentially making the case that going for the "I'mma be a badass! hero!" doesn't always work out the way it does in your average movie (whether the character is male or female).
I actually liked this remake. I admit it doesn't do anything groundbreaking, nor does it tread in any new territory. I just had fun watching it.

This movie is further proof that studios didn’t learn from Black Christmas 2019.
I enjoyed this remake for what it was. Russ Thorne actor was amazing. Funny story I did watch the third one haven't seen it at the time. I do highly recommend watching it the tone is very close to the original and not the second.
I thought it was okay, but couldn’t compare to the original, and love some of the references to the first and second movie.

Man, this was my favorite slasher of the year, but I totally agree with the third act problems. Feels like it kinda loses what I love about it in the final fifteen minutes. It gets super serious and not as fun. But those first two acts are just top notch. I dug this one a lot.
I wouldn't have known about this movie without your review. The pillow fight and car engine scenes alone made this a fun popcorn movie.

I had no idea they remade this movie. The original was my first horror movie as a kid and I still love it to this day, so I’ll have to check this one out!
I actually really enjoyed the twist in the 3rd act. I found it refreshing and enjoyed the commentary they tried to make.
Just seen it last night and thought it was pretty good. The guy who plays Russ Thorne does a good job especially with the facial expressions. One thing that was missing was the dead pizza guy at the door scene. I still remember that from the original after not seeing that one in a good 15 or so years.

It is a good old movie! My cousins had me watch it when I was little and it was my first horror movie. It traumatized me for a while lol but it also made me love horror movies now

I was completely bored. I didn't care for any of the characters and I didn't like the twist they put into the ending. Would I watch it again? Only if there was nothing else better on.
I thought the characters were fine enough, but completely agree on the twist. Fell flat for me.
I was so surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie, loved it!
The movie was stupid fun, and played unexpectedly with the tropes i.e the shower scene, calling the guys "Guy 1" and "Guy 2". Their names and characters were irrelevant because they were the equivalent of the red shirt going down with the landing party in the old Star Trek. It was more self-aware than meta, and definitely not woke.
My best friend and I used to watch the first and second film of this franchise a lot in high school. Fun movies. I haven’t seen either one since then. I’d watch this.

@DrumDums I’ve never seen the original Slumber Party Massacre but, it sounds like a film I would enjoy however, I still have cable and I’ve seen this remake on demand on SyFy On Demand and thought about watching it and it honestly sounds like a fun one.
I may go ahead and watch it before seeing the original just so, I can judge it on it’s own terms and whether or not it was a fun slasher movie on it’s own terms without comparing it to the original which I haven’t seen which, on it’s own merits it sounds like a fun slasher film and I’ll probably check out the original someday too.
It’s just not a movie I hear constantly that’s a “must see” when my friends recommend me fun slashers to watch.

Definitely not a great movie, but I felt like they poke good fun at the same feminist themes that films like Black Christmas ‘19 tried to inflate. They set up a lot of serious stuff just to lambast it just as quickly in the following scenes. Not a perfect movie, but definitely funny and a good homage to the original at times.

For the most part, I think you were spot on. I did this review about a week or so ago and I pretty much hit all the notes you stated and I caught all the wink and nods. Very observable there! But I think this movie fits in perfectly with the others. Once you understand that this franchise accidentally created another entirely different franchise by mistake. 😆
And I don’t mean, someone had an idea that turned into another idea. No, the history behind this movie is completely insane! They literally 100% created an alternate franchise because of incompetence. I swear ,The story behind this you wouldn’t believe how it came together. And once the viewer understand how disjointedly this franchise came together, this movie fits right into the craziness. Till this day, one of the great film stories ever told, 😆
It’s a strange franchise indeed, much like Silent Night Deadly Night. And I do love both franchises for their oddities.

I need to check this remake out, I only watched the original for the first time ever this year and I loved it. I was annoyed at myself that I hadn’t watched it sooner.
Yeah the original is pure 80s cheese. So much fun. I might prefer the second one to the first.

The original is a classic.
Woke isn't strong female characters - woke is far left identity politics. If the film features their talking points like - white privilege, smashing the patriarchy, all men are toxic ... etc. Thats woke. If it features that, its an instant skip for me. There is too many other entertainment choices, I dont need that bullsh*t.

I just got done with this, the original was far superior but it had some awesome kills, I was glad they brought back the original music.
I think my biggest issue with it was tonally it was all over the damn place.
Also I saw the ending part coming a mile off, too obvious.
Spoilers* did you notice they made a point of the fact that Russ mother didn’t have the nail gun? When Dana’s Mum arrived I was sure she had some some of the killing. I’m sure after the girl is killed in the trunk of the car we saw her jackets and footwear. Makes me think they had that element in but maybe it got changed in reshoots or something? Was weird.
Yes the tone was all over the place. With some script reworks it could have been great.

I grew up in the 80s & 90s but haven't even seen the original. This remake seems like a horror film that I need to watch despite it being a SYFY made for cable film.
I heard the director mentioned in the same sentence as Aster, Eggers, & Flanagan.

You can never can beat the original well except maybe the thing (1982) or the hammer series. Or like the fly. I never saw the slumber party massacre but I think I would love it. The remake, I will try to watch it and maybe not like it like with the original. There is also a remake to I know what you did last summer.

Just saw it today I will say it was fun to watch. I think the coolest character was Alix she was funny lol. Overall it was a fun movie to watch.

Love the OG and part 2, but this was bad. I had a hard time even finishing this one. I thought you would rip this a new a**hole for sure. I guess you sort of dug it... and that's cool. We all can't agree on everything. Thanks for the review.

This actually isn’t a half bad movie IMO, way better than I thought it would be. I still much prefer the original and part 2, but I’d take this one over part 3 all day. However, the 3rd act fell flat on its face for me, as did the twist. The characters were also painfully stupid . And I know I’m just being a nitpicky tool buff here, but you’d think for a movie that takes place in the present day, that the killer wouldn’t bother with carrying around such an oversized drill, and that he’d use a more modern design drill that’s a lot more popular nowadays. Still a good movie nonetheless

I mentioned this in letterboxd review: Had this movie stopped where the original ended, it would've been fine. But it kept going and it just felt like padding.

I think this movie was good. It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. Kills were good, some funny moments, overall entertaining. The characters were a bit wooden, there were definitely a couple too many, but some of them were pretty compelling. I won't recall a lot of it, but I wouldn't mind seeing it again. It's a real 3/5 deal, not great, but a bit better than halfway. I just hope that the use of the classic guitar from the second film will mean we will get a remake of the second film . I want a rockabilly driller killer again!

DD I agree with most of what you said, I found this movie to be bipolar, one minute the movie want's to be funny then it changes to being dead serious, the jokes were not funny at all in my opinion and made the experience worst. I think they did handle the homages to the original very well but they didn't carry over the fun and the cheese. They didn't handle the killer very well as you said, him running with the drill took the tension and fear factor away for me, he just looked ridiculous in my opinion. The setup with the boys was a fail, such good idea just executed badly. Great review!

I hated this remake. It felt like 2019 Black Christmas rehashed...but poorly-if that's even possible And I hated the Pamela Voorhees "twist" as well 👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽

Idk, think I'll stick with the original movies. Remake and Made For TV, specially for a slash, feels like a pass to me.
The first half of the movie was good but the second half not so much also had heavy feminist influence (some of it worked some not to much). I'd give it a C+ grade and I recommend you watch the original 3rd sequel (my 2nd favorite of the trilogy with Cheerleader massacre being my favorite)

I thought it was going to be like Black Christmas 2019 shoving the stupid woke messages, which they did but it was not that bad. This movie was stupid, but it was good stupid. In classic horror movies it was always the cliche hot girls getting murdered, but instead it is the guys getting the cliche murdered. The slumber party scene, the shower scene, and being stereotypical idiots. Which I find it funny, but I wish they did not call it Slumber Party Massacre since it is nothing close to the original besides the killer with the drill and the girls having a slumber party. I am all about strong female characters, but if you make them bland, overpowered, and total assholes that they think they are the second coming. Then that is a bad female character, make the female character a person with flaws, personality, and down to earth making a comeback at a challenge and you got a good and strong character who happens to be female.
Third act was horrible! Great review as usual.

The original film was already a female created and driven film and has aspects of feminism in it, so the fact the remake does really isn't a surprise and wouldn't consider that woke. I consider woke to be when something is shoved in unnessecarily.

I didn't hate this movie but it's written pretty badly! The killer is good and some good kills and I didn't mind the films score! The premise for the movie is not a bad idea but the execution was not good and the setup felt all wrong! The subplot with the guys was stupid and it should have been removed and instead spend more time with the girls! The movie has some cool Easter eggs! This movie does have a message but this movie is so stupid that no one would take it seriously! I don't hate this movie but I can't see myself watching it again anytime soon and some are saying it's just as bad as the Black Christmas remake from 2019 which I am glad I have not seen, so I can't say if it's just as bad or not! I can't understand how this has 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes WTF!
Is it woke? Nah.
Does it have some issues with subtlety though? Yes, just like most movies these days.
In general I have enjoyed it.
I didn't like it looked and felt like a tv series episode.
I get the ow budget, but I think it's more a matter of esthetic and creative choices.
Also I think they haven't managed to balance comedy and horror as good as the OG movie.
OG movie was smart and played with the slasher tropes, but it had the moments of tension, and Russ was really quirky and scary.
Here they decided to go full on spoof, they made a one big joke out of Russ, there was no real feeling of threat.
So once they decided to switch the tone in the last act, and be more serious, when they decided to drop some dialogue about women, about trauma, about sexual predators, it didn't feel convinicng.
And as I said in the first sentence.
This is the problem in modern cinema in general.
Everything is so literal, and there are so many in your face dialogues.
We are not that stupid.
Dikrector and writer are not stupid either.
The pillow fight scene, or the shower scene.
That was brilliant and hillarious.
That's the way you play with 80s slasher tropes, and make you point about how it probably felt for women to see the mandatory female nudity sequences - ridiculous :D
To sum it up, I enjoyed this remake, it was fun.
But I doubt I will rewatch it soon, unlike the OG ;)
Saying that I wouldn't mind new Slumber Party Massacre movies, not remakes, done by women, to keep the franchise alive.

Well, I just watched it. I'll never get that time back. Aside from a few kills, I didn't like it.
I love the original although it is a bit satirical. Unfortunately, the remake went in the satirical direction as well and took it a bit too far. WAY too much humor for my taste!... I think this was a missed opportunity to make a really scary slasher film. Think about it. A group of teenage girls alone at night being terrorized by a maniac with a power drill. Horrifying concept, not so horrifying execution of said concept.
The remake had massive potential, but didn't quite live up to it.

Slumber Party Massacre is easily the worst horror/slasher of 2021. Absolutely hated it, I know what you did last summer series is trash aswell. Looks like Urban Legend, Mutilator and Silent Night, Deadly Night will turn out exactly the same.
Just as bad as the recent Black Christmas trash heap. Worse. Because unlike Black Christmas, this remake had potential to outshine the not so good original and they squandered it.
