I am right there with you, Dumdrums. Halloween 1978 is amazing! It's so engaging from a story perspective and from a visual perspective, too. It's a classic from beginning to end. I will always have a love for this film for as long as I live. Excellent cinematography, great story, entertaining characters, and excellent simple story. Halloween = excellence through simplicity.
One really small thing about Halloween that I love is in the scene where Laurie looks out of the window in the classroom. It’s really creepy how she actually sees him the second time that she looks. You expect him to disappear right then but instead he disappears on the third time
John Carpenter approached Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee to play the role of Dr. Sam Loomis (that was eventually played by Donald Pleasence), but both turned him down due to the low pay. Lee later said it was the biggest mistake he had ever made in his career. John Carpenter considered the hiring of Jamie Lee Curtis as the ultimate tribute to Alfred Hitchcock who had given her mother, Janet Leigh, legendary status in Psycho (1960).
I keep wondering if you can watch Halloween when it isn't Halloween?!? Masterpiece of a horror movie but I want to watch Halloween when it's not Halloween and it bugs me thinking about it. 😥
@@Feministguy7483 i watched it yesterday i see no problem with not watching it only on Halloween i see it whenever i want but i do watch it on halloweeen
I watch this EVERY year on Halloween and I actually pick my kids up from school in a Michael Myers mask on that day. I also play the soundtrack with all the original scores as we drive around on Halloween, LOUD. They LOVE it!
Love your appreciation for this cinema classic. One thing to note is how Carpenter didn't do a lot a editing between different camera angles. Many of the shots are long from a single perspective. This allows the audience to feel like they are in the scene watching it unfold. Too many modern directors use fast cut editing with multiple camera angles and shots that disorient the viewer and therefore cannot get a sense of what is happening or feel a part of it. This movie works so great as it is like a campfire horror story. One didn't know The Shape was supernatural and thus the Boogeyman until the very end. And he disappears into the night. The End. Awesome.
When I was a kid, I went to see "Halloween." I was sitting in the lobby, waiting for the previous showing to end. I remember hearing people screaming inside the theater, like they were on a rollercoaster. Needless to say, I couldn't wait to watch it. And I was not disappointed.
Having rewatched Halloween (1978) several times, I grow to appreciate this film in particular as a great film. The atmosphere & suspense are top shelf & the performances are believable. Not to mention the score. What a brilliant score. Even the TV version is really good.
I know you did this 4 years ago, but i love seeing Halloween reviews. I love talking about Halloween films and hearing other people talk about it, especially as passionately as you do. It's my fifth favourite movie of all time, and that top 5 keeps switching with eachother constantly so i understand your love for the brilliance of this film.
I notice one of the things Castle did was swap the knife into his other hand. He did it at the top of the stairs before he goes down after Laurie and he does it again after she smashes the door window and he comes after her from the door.
This is in my top 5 of favorite movies of all time and carpenter is my favorite film maker. His horror movies all have the impending doom vibe that most don't have awesome review
I was seven when I first saw Halloween on Halloween and it scared the shit out of me. My sister and I went trick or treating right after watching this I kept looking behind me for a dude in a white mask. I got creeped out everytime I saw a station wagon. This is my all time favorite horror movie ever made, next to the original Night of the Living Dead
I'll never forget my first time seeing this movie. I was inches from the TV, completely hooked and scared out of my damn mind. I had a bowl of popcorn that had barely been touched because I couldn't be bothered to take my eyes off the screen. At the end, after seeing The Boogeyman shot and he falls, the sigh of relief knowing it's over...just for them to do the clip by clip that shows different locations from the movie and hearing him breathing in the background. It's never over, you can't kill The Boogeyman. I felt like he was right behind me in the dark for days.
I think this is the best video I've seen that talks about Carpenter's masterwork. I can truly sense your love and passion for the film which makes me appreciate the film more and you as a person. I say this as this is the scariest film I've seen due to it having a reality to it of the idea of a psycho killer on the loose doing random acts of evil. And the visual of Michael just standing there being silhouetted from the house on the other end of the street still makes me scared that I'd see that in real life.
Halloween ('78) is also right up there for me. Not only in terms of 'horror' films but films period. Its a rarity in that you can watch it again and again and again and it just doesn't get tired. Much like the Shape himself.
so glad u re-reviewed this! I always wondered why your old one was so short being its your favorite & now obviously you explained it . Hey Lee just watched your review on Halloween. Agreed with everything you said. Yes. Great points great explanations great review. This movie is my favorite of all time as well for it being the scariest film. You understand and explain it in a very profound and respectful way. Totally agree. You left out the scene when myers Gets up from being stabbed and Laurie is in the foreground myers in the background. Every time I see that scene it gives me chills . A Perfect Movie. God bless Brother..Shape on!!!! Can't wait for the sequel to 2018. Can't wait.
I actually have Halloween to thank for my enjoyment of scary movies & it's one of the few from my childhood that's really stuck with me. I used to hate getting scared by movies when I was really little but then I saw Halloween with my parents & younger brother when I was about 11 years old & even though it scared the hell out of me I loved it. Since then I've enjoyed many horror movies but as an adult very few have been able to terrify me like Halloween did back then & it's still in my top 3 horror movies ever along with the TV version of Woman In Black & Lake Mungo.
I love this! You've done a really terrific job analyzing why The Shape is so terrifying and what makes Halloween such a superb masterpiece of a horror film. I was actually watching Halloween last night. I've already told you that it's my favorite movie of all time. I kind of felt like Black Christmas might be catching up to it and I was almost ready to call it a tie. However, when I watched Halloween late last night though for probably the millionth time...it buried Black Christmas. Yeah no contest for me. I grew up watching Halloween and its sequels. When I was a kid though, I actually enjoyed Halloween 2, 4 and 5 more than the original which I did love just not as much as those three sequels. That thankfully changed as I got older. I mean I never get tired of watching Halloween. I've watched it more than any other film. The only Halloween sequels that I enjoy these days are Halloween 2 and H20 which is one that I never used to like all that much. After having recently revisited H20 though after not having watched it for years, I found myself really enjoying it for the most part. I am looking forward to the new Halloween movie that's coming out in October. The fact that Carpenter is involved and Nick Castle is back as The Shape have me cautiously optimistic. I love the fact that they have brought Laurie back as well. She's my favorite final girl.
Thank you! That happens with me sometimes with movies. I recently revisited the Friday remake and found myself enjoying it. I plan on 'revisiting" and reviewing H20 soon (after H5). Let's see if I like it more!
I had the exact opposite thing happen with the Friday The 13th remake. I kind of liked it at first but then upon second viewing, I no longer enjoyed it.
I regret that it took me so long to "get" Halloween. I never liked it as a kid and I really wanted to because I knew it was influential and everyone loved it. Even one of my friend who didn't like horror movies absolutely loved it. I'm happy to say I love the film now. Just wish I had sooner.
Halloween is my favourite movie of all time. There is no other horror movie that gives me that feeling. Part nostalgia and a lifetime obsession with it. Recently had some of my memorabilia signed by Nick Castle. And Tony Moran. Both really fantastic guys. And in my opinion. No one else captured the spirit of Nick Castles original take on the shape. For me the original classic will never be beat. Although I'm buzzing for October. Great review lee.
I must add.....DEBRA HILL was his partner, not only on this, but EFNY and H2 (1981). Personally, I don;t think she has ever gotten enough credit for her work.
I think she gets exactly the amount of credit she probably deserves - she’s fully credited for everything she did except maybe playing young Michael’s hands quickly at the beginning of the movie, she influenced some of the female teenage dialogue (the only dated thing in the movie in my opinion), she wasn’t the director or the cinematographer which are probably the two main ingredients behind the movie’s success, and in between the first two movies she allowed the Myers mask to deteriorate despite the movie climbing into cult status very early on and seemed to have some poor communication with some of the cast members of the second film, so I think her place in history works out - a solid partner to John Carpenter who helped shape (no pun intended) the overall Halloween vision, but that’s it.
John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN will forever be a Masterpiece! Just so simple about Michael Myers. he murdered as a child, he spent his whole life in a insane asylum, and he broke out on Halloween. 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪
This movie terrified me as a kid. My Mom let me rent it on tape, and I couldn't even get through the first 5 minutes of the film. The music, the atmosphere, everything about was just so eerie.
@@DrumdumsOfficial It was recommended to me recently. I've been watching your videos for a few years now, and I haven't caught this one. Great review brotha 👍
A lot of people have The Exorcist as their scariest movie of all time. Can't fault them it's a masterpiece of horror. But it's not a movie that gets creepier the more you watch it or should I say better. Once the shock value goes away, it's still a great movie, but not scary anymore. Halloween is just the gift that keeps on givin. That's why it's my number one. It might not be the scariest, but it's a masterpiece.
Drumdums awesome video! Halloween is my favorite movie ever seen it over 300 times no joke and i loved the 2018 entry so much, love your halloween reviews so much keep it up good sir.
I have always loved good ol'Mikey.... So pumped for this movie!! Where is our trailer people!!!? Should be coming very soon I guess. I too have been haunted by Myers as a kid. I used to take a leak in my backyard when I was home alone.. Rather than go upstairs! Lol
Wow!! Lee I had no idea you went to the sets and even filming locations of the Halloween films that is Supersweet! 👏🏽🎃🙂 Halloween will always be one of the best slasher films of all time. From a fantastic creative genius John Carpenter himself. Michael Myers will always be one of my personal favorites iconic movie villains. This was really great Lee!! ❤️✊🏽🎃
Rewatching this tonight after seeing the new one the other day. I love this movie it gets better every time. Literally the only scene I don’t like is when they show up to the house and just stare at Michael while he holds the knife. Besides that it’s a perfect movie. The score is used so well. The new one has a great score but they didn’t use it enough. I love the classic long panning shots with the music building a sense of doom.
Way better review of one of my favorite movies. (This and The Thing) I'm currently looking around for the perfect H1 mask to complete my collection, I'm waiting for NightOwls The Creep to show up, hopefully that will be the one!
Drumdums yeah and when he just gets up and walks away after being shoot six times. that's when you know he's not human. i got that vibe from him all throughout the movie.
Hey Drumdums, I’ve been following your videos for a little while now, and I’ve enjoyed all of them, you and Cody leach are the definition of what I look for on UA-cam, in depth looks on horror films that I grew up with, it’s great to see someone with the same love for the series that I give so much praise, even with all the lows in the series. Halloween (1978) is a masterpiece. And It will always be all in all, a phenomenal review, and also you’re pretty much one of my favorite reviewers out there today.
So happy that you returned to this movie...I found your channel through your reviews of the Halloween Franchise. This, Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, and An American Werewolf in London (which I'd absolutely love for you to review) are my favorite Horror movies...but my favorite Carpenter film I think, probably goes to Assault on Precinct 13 or They Live. Escape From New York and Christine are awesome as well. I might be being stupid and missing them...but will you ever review Carpenter's other films? Like the ones I just mentioned and his others? Like Prince of Darkness and The Thing...etc. Carpenter's Halloween is my most watched film I have too. I've watched it probably at least 100 times so far, and love it every time I watch it. Anyways, take it easy, bro, and Don't Fear the Reaper.
I have to say, while I've never full on loved Halloween, I have come to a better understanding of why it's so beloved, and it's amazing to see people so passionate about it all these years later.
This film truly is a masterpiece. Even people who don't like horror love this film. The part where Loomis is meeting with the Sheriff at first and he turns and looks both ways, just missing Michael drive by by mere SECONDS, was brilliant. Halloween is a "perfect storm" of things that came together to make a brilliant film.
I agree that the idea of a man (not a zombie or ghoul like Freddy or Jason) but a man, sitting alone in a room for 15 years just waiting for the silent alarm inside himself to trigger, always made me very unnerved. It was actually terrifying. The original Halloween is in a league so much higher than all the other sequels (which I still enjoy).
I could definitely relate to you. I'm the youngest out of the and my sister always made me watch the original Halloween. I watched all the classics when I was a kid but Micheal Myers was the only one that made me scared to sleep at night. I'm 21 now and still is my favorite thing thing in the world. Other than Iron Maiden maybe. Thanks for the great review.
@@DrumdumsOfficial If you could pick your favorite scene/still, what would it be? The image of the shape standing outside of the Wallace house when Tommy is looking out the window has always stayed with me.
Michael gave me nightmares as well I remember one of them with great detail to this day 18 years later I was 2 years old when I saw Halloween then I had the nightmare that night
Hey great review as always, I'm going to be starting my movies reviews in about 2 weeks you have been a great inspiration I hope you will enjoy my reviews when they start, my first two reviews are both horror movies one from early 70's the other early 80's , thanks again for all your reviews they are great.
Halloween is my ringtone this movie and when a stranger calls the original have you checked the children yet made me nervous babysitting I kept every light on an emergency bag by the front door just in case I have to grab the baby and run for my life screaming down the street like Jamie Lee Curtis LMFAO I was always scared when I was babysitting
The part that ALWAYS gets me in this movie is when Laurie is banging on the door, trying to get the kid to come down and unlock the door, and then you see Michael in the background just slowly walking towards her. That scene always puts me on edge, to the point where I'm always like "Come on kid, hurry up and unlock the door!"
Also, Michael Myers is the scariest horror antagonist in all of cinema because of how he's the embodiment of evil and he's rooted in a reality. Plus his movement and that blank mask.
Love your videos buddy...John Carpenters Halloween is my favorite film of all time too. It really is perfect...I love the simplicity and minimal nature of it. It was made by a group of ppl who didn't have alot money but they had intelligence, vision, talent, and style.
When Laurie falls over the banister and down the stairs. What happened to the shot of Michael looking over the banister? There's pictures of it it was on a vhs tape I had but dvd/blue ray it's not there
Nailed it lee! Great approach treating it more like a discussion and going into the subtleties. It's all in the details. Depending on the day I'm asked, Halloween is my number 1 or 2 horror movie of all time. You never fail to do it justice.
Oh hell yeah! Hands down, this is my favorite classic Halloween review by far. There is nothing I can add to this fantastic film and this fantastic review except to say, awesome. Just awesome. Totally! 👏👏👏🤘🤘 But I will add that I am not allowed to praise the brilliant twist ending of this masterpiece every Halloween when it’s on TV because I never shut up about it. My wife, my friends, my barber, my co-workers have all banned me lol But seriously, how great was that ending?!?!?!?! It was a game changer!!!!!!
I love watching things that people are passionate about, and you my good sir, are passionate about Halloween/horror is truely inspiring. You've got yourself a lifelong subscriber friend.
I also feel justified in explaining why I love this movie and this franchise more than the others out of the big three. When I go to a horror movie the three things, I'm looking for, great characters, a good story, and suspenseful atmosphere. Halloween (1978) and MOST of the sequels deliver on that in spades. Whenever I watch A Nightmare on Elm Street, I always felt the ending helped break that movie and made whatever triumph that Nancy went through seem pointless (at least until the third movie). When I watch the first Friday the 13th, I see that the kills are there as well as the set up, but there doesn't seem to be any characters I'm all that interested in seeing make it out or that I care about. Now to be fair, both Feddy and Jason would go on to have great sequels and while I have grown to both respect and appreciate their respected franchises, I never get there all the way like I do with Michael or Loomis or even Laurie.
Thank you for inadvertently giving me a valuable tip in this review. When I do get around to launching some review vids of my own, I will refrain from doing this one and wait until I'm more comfortable/seasoned/etc...
I LOVE this film and whenever I ask someone about Halloween they say the old classic because in my opinion Halloween was the starting point for slasher movies and the best slasher film of all time

I must add.....DEBRA HILL was his partner, not only on this, but EFNY and H2 (1981). Personally, I don;t think she has ever gotten enough credit for her work.
JohnBlack2345 yes she has her name is on everything I kept looking like who the hell is Debra but now I know
I think she gets exactly the amount of credit she probably deserves - she’s fully credited for everything she did except maybe playing young Michael’s hands quickly at the beginning of the movie, she influenced some of the female teenage dialogue (the only dated thing in the movie in my opinion), she wasn’t the director or the cinematographer which are probably the two main ingredients behind the movie’s success, and in between the first two movies she allowed the Myers mask to deteriorate despite the movie climbing into cult status very early on and seemed to have some poor communication with some of the cast members of the second film, so I think her place in history works out - a solid partner to John Carpenter who helped shape (no pun intended) the overall Halloween vision, but that’s it.
Great review!!! Not only is this movie favorite horror film, but also my favorite movie of all time. Classic!
Rhine1988 Hell yeah!!
This must have kicked up in the algorithm. Been getting a few comments on it.
@@DrumdumsOfficial It was recommended to me recently. I've been watching your videos for a few years now, and I haven't caught this one. Great review brotha 👍
what a great surprise! Halloween is indeed a movie to be watched like 6 times a year.
Hell yeah...and that's not even enough.
Myers is so OP now in this one he could get injured easily but he’d just always come back whereas now he’s like terminator in a white mask
I feel the exact same way about this wonderful picture...it’s my all-time favorite movie. And...you are a gorgeous man! Grrr
Drumdums awesome video! Halloween is my favorite movie ever seen it over 300 times no joke and i loved the 2018 entry so much, love your halloween reviews so much keep it up good sir.
Halloween 1978 is my favorite movie too! And I really LOVED the 2018 film too
I have always loved good ol'Mikey.... So pumped for this movie!! Where is our trailer people!!!? Should be coming very soon I guess. I too have been haunted by Myers as a kid. I used to take a leak in my backyard when I was home alone.. Rather than go upstairs! Lol
John Carpenter’s Halloween(1978) deserves to be regarded as a great masterclass in good filmmaking
I'm with you. Myers is also the only horror character that seems to pop up in my dreams/nightmares. He has for years now. Weird.
Yep. He has that rare ability with the fans.
What many people don't realize is that the Myers house is maybe just as iconic as the Amityville house
Michael D. Williams III Yes it was such a cool experience.
P.J Soles was fresh off the success of Brian De Palma’s Carrie(1976) before she got cast in Halloween(1978)
It never gets old. What a movie.
I've actually got a Michael figure where if you press it it starts breathing and the Halloween theme plays.
The scene where he sits up is the scariest thing I’ve ever seen
Agreed! And thanks man for watching these reviews.
Way better review of one of my favorite movies. (This and The Thing) I'm currently looking around for the perfect H1 mask to complete my collection, I'm waiting for NightOwls The Creep to show up, hopefully that will be the one!
Thanks Mason. Between this and The Thing, Carpenter goes unmatched in the directing department in my mind.
i love the fact that john carpenter never made it obvious that michael was more then human. he just gave you hints.
Great point. You don't really know for sure if he's "human" in the first one. I love how ambiguous it is.
Drumdums yeah and when he just gets up and walks away after being shoot six times. that's when you know he's not human. i got that vibe from him all throughout the movie.
the soundtrack for Halloween(1978) deserves to be rereleased on vinyl and the movie deserves to be rereleased in theatres
YES! I love this franchise so much Awesome Review Lee!
My favorite is Halloween 2 (1981)
Thank you!
No problem man! its cool seeing how far you have come since you first reviewed this movie.
An absolute classic. One of the best horror movies ever crafted, truly
For sure!
I have to say, while I've never full on loved Halloween, I have come to a better understanding of why it's so beloved, and it's amazing to see people so passionate about it all these years later.
It really has the most passionate fans I've ever seen.
Yes people don't realize how carefully crafted this film is because it flows so effortlessly. It truly is a masterpiece of cinema!
What a classic one of the best horror film's ever made thanks to John Carpenter a brilliant and underrated director in my view.
Agreed!!
Tyler Moser Haha Halloween and Iron Maiden. Awesome!!🤘
Great review! Have you ever seen the extra scenes that were added for the tv premiere in 1981? I have an old extended cut dvd that includes them.
Oh yeah. It's on the deluxe edition blu-ray box set. I also have the DVD as well.
Halloween 1978 is also my favorite movie of all time!!! Classic psychological horror film.
Me too Ben!
I celebrate Halloween by enjoying John Carpenter’s Halloween every Halloween
The Halloween movies are my all time favorites...well most of them.
Great review as always :) Carpenter is the inventor of the slasher film and that score is perfect.
TheReelDeal Film Reviews Agreed and thank you!
The part that ALWAYS gets me in this movie is when Laurie is banging on the door, trying to get the kid to come down and unlock the door, and then you see Michael in the background just slowly walking towards her. That scene always puts me on edge, to the point where I'm always like "Come on kid, hurry up and unlock the door!"
chelle-belles91 Haha yes! Michael is scary as hell in that scene!
Also, Michael Myers is the scariest horror antagonist in all of cinema because of how he's the embodiment of evil and he's rooted in a reality. Plus his movement and that blank mask.
Couldn't agree more.
I enjoyed this movie when I watched it again, it’s my EIGHTH favorite Halloween movie.
The more you watch it, the more you will come to appreciate it.
Great review! By far my favourite movie as well 🎃
wok walkin Thank you!
Love your videos buddy...John Carpenters Halloween is my favorite film of all time too. It really is perfect...I love the simplicity and minimal nature of it. It was made by a group of ppl who didn't have alot money but they had intelligence, vision, talent, and style.
Thanks so much man. I get really into talking about Halloween. Such a phenomenal film!
Yeah that's what I love about these types of reviews. I can mix it up and it keeps it unpredictable for my audience.
Finally somebody who understands cinematography.
Thank you!
Oh hell yeah! Hands down, this is my favorite classic Halloween review by far. There is nothing I can add to this fantastic film and this fantastic review except to say, awesome. Just awesome. Totally! 👏👏👏🤘🤘
But I will add that I am not allowed to praise the brilliant twist ending of this masterpiece every Halloween when it’s on TV because I never shut up about it. My wife, my friends, my barber, my co-workers have all banned me lol But seriously, how great was that ending?!?!?!?! It was a game changer!!!!!!
Thank you Jeff!!
I love watching things that people are passionate about, and you my good sir, are passionate about Halloween/horror is truely inspiring. You've got yourself a lifelong subscriber friend.
hayden titler Thank you brother!!🙏
Perfect review
I LOVE this film and whenever I ask someone about Halloween they say the old classic because in my opinion Halloween was the starting point for slasher movies and the best slasher film of all time
Oh yeah it definitely kicked the doors open for the slasher craze from 78 to 84. And it's still the best.
Great review.
So happy I recently discovered your channel! Halloween is my favorite franchise of all time and I've been so ecstatic going through your videos. Thankyou so much 😭
Thank you Ari!
I teeter back and forth between Halloween and John Carpenters The Thing on which one is my favorite. Black Christmas is a great underrated classic as well.
I hope you do the whole franchise of Halloween I love Halloween OMG it came before a lot of movies I think this movie inspired certain movies and certain people
the mental hospital scene is so dam creepy... this movie is a fine example on how to make a scary masterpiece with a few bucks. Great video bro, its always nice to check your older videos ;)
Thanks brother. Glad I went back and redid this one. Wanted to do it justice.
And justice was served brother ;) well done as usual
I haven't watched Halloween in about 2 years, but its still my favorite movie ever" its like everything came together really well and we got this perfect film. Hey have u ever ranked the Halloween masks ?
LOVE JESSICA No I haven't but that's an interesting idea!
The only nit pick I have with the movie is that it is clearly not autumn time when they shot the movie, otherwise it's a masterpiece!
Haha yes. They shot it in April I believe.
Nice one bro! You're always at your best when you're talking Halloween. The passion is real! One day I'm gonna review this series. I've done Friday and Nightmare so Halloween is long overdue.
Bryan Lomax Movie Talk Thanks brother! I try extra hard with these haha. Love this franchise!
I love your custom intros!
Thank you!
Halloween is my favorite movie of all time too I give it A UNICORN TRAPPED ON AN ISLAND!

the filmmaking style of John Carpenter is awesome and Halloween(1978) is best enjoyed every October
🖤🎃 A true masterpiece
Halloween(1978) used Steadicam before Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining(1980) used it
Hi Lee new subscriber here fella from the uk. This film is my all time favourite too absolutely bloody magic
What's up man?! Thanks for watching. Really appreciate it. HalloweeN rules!!
