This Works MUCH Better Than Diet and Exercise!

  • There is one principle out there that works better than diet and exercise. In this video, I am going to explain the pitfalls of diet and exercise when comes to getting in shape. These two words need to not only be eliminated from your vocabulary, but there needs to be a change in your mindset.
Get in Shape Here - athleanx.com/x/training-and-nu...
Subscribe to this channel here - bit.ly/2b0coMW
I often hear when people are trying to get in shape, they use the words “diet” and “exercise.” Unfortunately, I just as often see that the people using these words end up failing or right back where they started. Whether you are a beginner or someone with experience that has fallen off the wagon, your mindset towards getting in shape needs to change.
Instead, you need to focus on nutrition and training.
Whether you are a beginner or someone with experience that has fallen off the wagon, this will change your life for the better. I make the analogy that these words all represent directions on a compass. Following the concept of diet and exercise will always go in the opposite direction of nutrition and training. Instead of following the direction that combines diet and exercise, you need to follow the direction of nutrition and training.
The problem with using the terms of diet and exercise is that they are either temporary or that there is no progression involved. When I hear diet, I think of a temporary solution to lose weight; it is something that you go on and come off of. Exercise is haphazardly engaging in exercise without any sort of plan or progression.
I give the story of my mother who was the perfect example of diet and exercise. She bought every fitness gadget that she saw on TV and engaged in multiple different fad diets in her pursuit to lose weight and get in better shape. Ultimately, she failed when it came to both. She could never keep the weight off.
Nutrition is different than diet in the sense that it is a routine that fits your lifestyle and is sustainable over time. Training is different than exercise in that there is a plan and progression involved in order to reach the end results. Think of it this way; if you went to the gym and walked on the treadmill for 30 minutes at a level 4 and you continue to do that same thing over and over again, day after day, you are not progressing.
If you take a look at calisthenics, you would see that for these athletes to achieve the most difficult bodyweight movements, they had to progress there. They never started out being able to do these things. Instead, they started with easier exercises and used them to progress to these amazing feats. Now, you might fail along the way, just as they do, but that is not an excuse to give up completely.
When it comes to how to lose weight and how to lose body fat, nutrition is the key, not diet. Nutrition will have you locked in and consistent. You might be sitting at 40% body fat and have the goal of being only 8% body fat. This change is not going to happen over night - there is still a progression. Instead of trying to jump from that 40% to 8% overnight, set realistic short term goals.
If you want to lose weight or burn fat, these short term goals will ensure success.
For someone to achieve such a weight loss goal, they have to instead think about losing the first 5 lb. They have to focus on going from 40% to mid-30’s. Then low 30’s, then to high 20’s, etc. While this may take a longer approach, it is setting you up for long term success because your progression will have realistic expectations over time.
Your approach to get in shape, to lose weight and body fat, and to increase your overall level of fitness has to come from a change in your mindset. You need to get away from the concept of diet and exercise and focus on nutrition and training. I cannot stress this enough because I have seen too many people fail in their pursuit because they have the wrong idea in their head.
Remember, it's okay to have setbacks and it is okay to be worried about it. Just think about this, as long as you continue to take this approach, over time it will get much easier. This is because nutrition and training are sustainable aspects, whereas diet and exercise are only temporary fixes that won't stick in the long run.
If you are looking for a nutrition plan and workout program to make sure that you reach your goals, I have them all over at athleanx.com

@@athleanxhey Jeff I’m confused why I can lose and gain weight so quickly compared to most. I’m 6’7 315 pounds and I want to cut down to 250 ish but I don’t want to lose it too quickly and do it wrong. I’ve lost around 70 pounds before around 5 years ago but didnt train my muscles enough so I ended up with a skinny fat physique. I gained about 100 pounds and grew a couple inches since Covid. I fear once I start actually trying to lose weight again it’ll come off too easily like last time, like 10 pounds in a matter of a couple days, and it’s not like I starve myself or anything. Not sure if I’m harming my body by losing weight that rapidly.

My mom started training at 80 years old. She's 5 ft, and 140 lbs. In 2 years she dropped to 117, she has muscle, she can do 3 sets of 25 jump rope. I'm not kidding. This should inspire those of you getting older. My brother and I explained nutrition to her. My brother taught her how to wt train.

This might be the best video you’ve done. I’m 45 and 50lbs overweight and the older I get, the more discouraged I get. I can’t drop 10lbs quick like I use to and it makes me feel like I’ll never lose weight or figure it out. This video made me realize my discouragement comes from setting too high of a goal. Thanks for the insight, I bought three of your programs last weekend so I’m looking forward to working on them one little step at a time.

I started at 286, used a ketogenic nutrition plan for 7 months, did a weight training plan and a cardio plan as well. Dropped 60+ pounds of body fat, and then went catabolic. I had intended to make keto a lifestyle, but had to make some adjustments. I added complex carbs to my plan, and began losing more body fat. I am down to 15% body fat, still gaining muscle with weight training and working the cardio side of the plan.
My sugar numbers are back to normal after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and my lipid numbers are all normal now also. I am 71 yrs old, and this will continue till I can no longer do it. It is my lifestyle now.
What u r saying absolutely works.

Great message in this one! Definitely needed to hear this one. I’m 41 and back in August I was 294 pounds. When I was in my 20’s I was active enough I could eat what ever and keep the weight down to around 200-220. After about 35 I’ve spiraled. Activity level was at an all time low and it was nothing for me to gain 10 pounds a year. I would do the fad diets and all I would do is yo-yo. In August my 16 year old son decided he wanted to get serious about the gym. He was 180 and has dropped to 156 as a lean mean teen. As of today I’ve lost around 19 pounds at 275. I walk during my lunch breaks about a mile a day, and we hit the gym 3 times a week with intense weight training. I’ve also started a food journal to track my calories. I say track because I was and still adamant I didn’t want to be on a diet. I’m just eating healthier, and limiting my calories to about 2800. Cutting sugars out of my diet like soda and junk food has been a lifestyle choice and when I eat something with sugar in it it’s too sweet. One mistake I’ve been making lately is exactly what you said in this video. I’m looking too far down the line and getting frustrated the weight I wanted to lose hasn’t been lost yet. In reality my body is changing dimensionally. Also I can tell I’m just so much better shape than I was in August. Thank you for your videos! You definitely have helped me with all the success I’ve had so far!

I started my journey last November after listing to Andrew Hubermans podcast with guest like you, dr. Andy Galpin, Dr. Peter Attia and others. I started putting together a way of eating that would work for me and after a few months of getting comfortable with that change I started adding exercise, walking mostly at the beginning. Progressing to cycling, hiking and now resistance training. Watching your videos has greatly helped me decide what exercises to do for my goals and its slowly working. I have give from 370lbs, pre diabetic on November first when I started to 220lbs and no longer pre diabetic today. I still have more work to do to get where I want to be but these videos and the exercises you demonstrate with the science to support them are a tremendous value for anyone like me that is trying to get in shape without getting injured and able to see results that motivate them to keep working. I realized being sober from alcohol isn’t something that’s going to come easy but if I have long intervals of being sober and I go “off the path” like you said then for as long as I come back to doing the right thing I’ll eventually be where I want to be since it takes years of practice. You're the one who got me into serious physique pursuit. I'm career military so I've been "fit" enough to always pass the PT test and weight hasn't been a problem, but in terms of getting built and shredded that all started with your channel (and the Athlean Xero program). Always wanted it but never knew how to achieve it, but I've been making slow incremental gains over time once you set me on the path. I do follow a couple others like Mike Israetel and Jeff Nippard nowadays so I'm not an AX purist but I always have taken your guidance very seriously and continue to do so.
I'll say this much, I did the Athlean Xero program start to finish and I'm not gonna lie I barely dragged myself across the finish line, scored basically worst tier in all of the challenges, etc. But after that, I was committed with a degree of seriousness (the degree of seriousness you'd need to even complete Xero) and going from bodyweight only to actual gym equipment was like the height of luxury and the commitment only got easier from there.
Thanks for the years of content.

Purpose, I agree that is the key. Jeff’s been my only Go-To for training programs for over 5 years. My original purpose - I needed an effective functional training workout so that I could remain physically strong and have the stamina and energy at work so that I could avoid injury at my very strenuous job in the commercial tire business. I’ve come so far since then… a year ago, I removed my the biggest cause of my inconsistency… alcohol. That changed everything. For the last 365 days, at 52 years old, I’m around 11% body fat and mostly just do Jeff’s Effective 💯 workouts with bands. My purpose is now to be the healthiest version of myself that I can be, by focusing on consistent daily movement and brain health. I listen to Jeff in this video and he is sooo nailing it! I remember struggling to find The Purpose for me, but once I did find it… I’m so grateful for that gift of purpose. My journey has been a long & sometimes rough one to say the least. Kidney failure, dialysis, transplant, 2 hip replacements, screws in my left foot, psychological setbacks, etc. But I never stopped trying to be in the best shape I could get myself in under whatever circumstances I was dealing with, physical limitations and all, & I believe that's why I'm still alive today. Finding Jeff's youtube channel when gyms were shut down during covid was a gift from some divine place for me. I've never been good about working out at home, & Jeff changed that forever. I still haven't been back to a gym, & I look & feel every bit as good as I did when I was going regularly. This video is a prime example of why Jeff C is heads & shoulders above most fitness guys on youtube, imho. No egos, no unnecessary attitudes - just clear, concise, & valuable information. What a class act...

Wise words that I can fully embrace through my own experience.
People so often try to teleport from A to B, that just can't work.
You will have to actually travel from A to B, make all the steps.
This is actually something I've struggled with for a long time, I was impatient and often made my steps too big.
Fully agree on the diet thing too.

Ive had incredible success following Jeff for the past couple years. Has literally made me feel at home in the gym. I have a routine now. This vid is super rad and I appreciate it because it really hits home. It’s ok if you didn’t make it to gym 5x this week. Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice is perfect. Keep moving forward, be more consistent than you were yesterday or last week/month/year. 💪

I found Jeff in May 2022. I've seen nearly every video he's put out in the past several years. I literally study his advice, and it completely changed my life. I used to feel like exercise was homework and I resented the fact that I had to deprive myself or else I'd gain weight. I was only doing cardio and under-eating because I thought that was the answer. I'm now fairly muscular and thin, and learning something new almost every time I work out, which I actually (still!) look forward to 6 days a week. I no longer live in pain in my knees, shoulders, and left elbow because of the correctives Jeff recommends, as well as using the proper form/grip. Thank you Jeff, I wish everybody could hear this. But still, it's not even enough to hear it. You could show this to literally any overweight person you want and not everybody would believe it. You have to want it. When the student is ready, the teacher shall appear. Thank you Jeff.

Great message. A couple years ago now i told myself i was going to get in good shape by 50. I am one of those people you talk about that fell off the wagon. I am not where i thought i would be but i am SO much better than a couple years ago. Mood is better, was able to walk 10+ miles not too long ago visiting my daughter at Oxford's campus. I walk roughly 4 miles per day and hit the weghts 3 or 4 times per week doing PHA and supersetting exercises. I do not need more mass but want to get the strength up and shed a few pounds
It helps my son lifts like i used to and that has been a motivator as well.
This was all SOOOO much easier 30 years ago. Honestly the hardest part has been shifting my mindset and expectations.

Back when you created the video about body fat percentage I took it to heart and have lost 16 pounds by eating more but less. You said six times and that’s what I been doing. I added a HIIT workout and lost even more. I’m actually starting to see abs, it’s be ten years since I have seen them. Now, I’m adjusting my current schedule and setting goals with this video. Keep up the great work man, thank you for all that you do.

I ended back to where i had started and realized how much i needed to get back on track with where i wanted to be at. Now that im going back in that direction to my goal, my mindset has been hardened and small goals have been achieved. The journey continues.

As you get older, you may want to consider replacing your "slogging" (slow jogging) with sprints and hills. It'll save your joints from the repetitive pounding that jogging creates, and you'll find that sprints and hills will elevate your anaerobic threshold.

I’m 48, trying to balance out biceps, chest, shoulders, and improve my strength, get stronger while doing it. I suffered from shoulder injury and two twisted vertebrae, plus a curve in my neck, bad posture from work, slowly, but surely I’m fixing my dropped shoulder blade which all created a constant sore neck, and Muscle tightness. I have since been progressing at everything I want to accomplish by sticking to the plan and creating a routine that suits me…..a lot of inspiration from your videos have helped. It’s all started because I got back actively into riding, single track, dirt bike, mountain bike and road.
Now I need to fix these chicken legs

This is all so true. I was pretty out of shape to begin with but lockdown reduced how much I went out to walk so I started to get really bad and noticed that things were getting out of hand. I decided that something had to change. I bought myself a set of modest dumbbells and started working out every other day. Not even doing anything crazy, just trying to make a set of muscles sore each day before rest. I started going for walks and even started to jog for certain sections of my walks. I started to eat less sugar and eat more nuts, more fruit etc. I lose weight, my trousers got looser. My physique became leaner and more muscular. That was all my goal was: lose weight, feel healthier, look leaner. I've been going for about a year and a half consistently. It's honestly not that hard if you set modest goals and try to fashion a lifestyle that's healthy instead of trying to patch up a bad lifestyle with a temporary fix.

Totally agree with this idea. So many people regard what they're doing as a fix that they only need abide to temporarily.
My current training regimen has been working out quite well. Started just before my 39th bday in May. 69" tall, 148 lbs, 36" waist. Now I'm 161 lbs with a 33" waist. I don't really have definite goals, I just want to be better.
I've watched many of the videos here, and I'm very thankful for the insight. I would have never guessed that a cable fly would be so much more effective than a machine fly or that squats would be so much better than the leg press. I'm even doing face pulls now! Thanks so much!

My wife and I have been on the fitness/nutrition train for around 7 years now. We both did gradual lifestyle changes to remove unhealthy foods and increase activity levels that eventually turned into a very healthy lifestyle. Now when people see the changes we've made they ask us what we've done to be healthier. When they see all the things we do they always say "I could never do all that". But to us the changes were so gradual that we hardly noticed them. And now we have a nutrition and training regiment that's so rock solid that even if we stray for a week, say on vacation, we get back to it with no problems at all. Great video, Jeff! This is solid advice and the same path my wife and I took to being healthier.

Totally agree with this video! It’s the little changes that you make over the weeks and months that make you successful. I did the whole 180 on eating and it worked for me, I lost almost 40 pounds in 2 months, but I was miserable the whole time and never got used to the diet. Then I started cheat days and before too long I gained all my weight back. That was about 6 years ago. The past 10 months I’ve done just a Jeff said and slow tweaked my eating habits. I’ve lost about 24 pounds, started at 250 down to 226, looking forward to 200. If it takes me another year to get there, I’m fine with that. But I know with me slowly losing weight by small changes, I’m will have a higher success rate of keeping it off. Thanks for all the great info put out Jeff!
