This is one of those old concertos which are seldom played - Conus, Viotti, Schumann, Dvorak, Bruch, Sivori, Vieuxtemps, Mendelssohn, Lipinski, and Tartini are among others which we seldom hear - it is filled with intriguing harmonies and beautiful melodies, not to mention fascinating technical challenges. I think it is better than his number 8 which everyone learns at some point. I love this performance. Bravo!!!!

Dear Violinhunter. I think both the Mendelssohn and Bruch (no. 1) and to some degree the Vieuxtemps (4 and 5) are quite frequently performed. Whereas the Ernst, Joachim as well as many others are not.

@@geigenatelierbrusch469 Yes, you are quite right. I should have said Mendelssohn 1 (in d minor) and Bruch 2 (in d minor.) And, yes, the Vieuxtemps are played far more frequently than these two. We're lucky to have very good recordings of so many rarely played works since we'll probably never hear them played live. Thank you for your response.

@@violinhunter2 My pleasure. I am quite a fan of rarely performed violinconcerti. One of my absolute favorites is the Wieniawski f-sharp minor. Also the Joseph Joachim "in Hungarian Style" is a very beautiful masterpiece. And there are others ....

This is the first time that I have heard this concerto. I did not want it to end. It is stunning with moments of lyricism that are quite simply sublime.

Check out the recording of Marie Soldat-Roeger playing the 2nd movement from 1920! It's like a time capsule!

i agree that #8 is the best of the bunch, but #9 is probably second best of the 15.. the 2nd mov is really beautiful, and the last mov is a lot of fun. i think it's too slow in this recording, though; needs more energy and bounce.

Regarding Spohr`s violin concertos, no.8 will be the real master piece out of his fifteen`s, next will be no.7 and no.9, also no.11.
