The fact they are giving a warranty on it is huge, given how much can go wrong with amps in general it’s tough to spend that much to mod your amp then have nothing else covered by fender
I have a regular 65 PRR and I changed the resistor for the tremolo intensity form the stock 1meg to a 470k idea from Psionic Audio and it sounds fantastic now. I didn't have the capacitor to replace and slow the speed down but making the intensity stronger made a huge difference. Also installed a Warehouse G10C speaker and man the amp came to life. I actually gig with it now.
Oh man, the Jazzmaster sounded soo good here. I loved it. Shows to go ya the subjectivity in tone. Overall all, sounded awesome, but when the JM came out, man, I loved it. Super easy fixes/mods with the connections. This makes me want the mid dial on my '68RI. You're right, you can't get that kind of break up at that volume level. If that's the mid switch allowing that, wow. Awesome demo. Thanks!
I loved the way the Jazzmaster sounded with the verb but the guitar itself was basically punishing me for not playing it enough lately I think haha. The mid push allowing breakup at lower volumes is extremely useful, big fan
I just bought a Fender Princeton 65 reissue. I have been watching a lot of videos on how to upgrade this amp because of some of the short comings you have pointed out. For the amount I paid just don;t know why Fender just doesn't include all these upgrades. It would definitely give them a better name in the market and make me a happier customer.
I hate to say it but the truth is the bigger corporations will cut costs even if it’s just a few dollars per amp to help the bottom line. They are designed to work well for X amount of time before stuff starts to go. These are decisions made by accountants, not amp designers imo.
@@AudiomoMusic I think you are right. Instead of having pride and craftmanship in a product, like Leo Fender originally did, they just want to keep cranking inferior products out the door because they think they will make more money. I will probably go get my Princeton moded at some point with the filters ..also a few other things pointed out on psionic audio channel I believe. Tom Bukovac pointed out there is a California company that makes a knock off Princeton Reverb that has all the mods included. NOt cheap though. I think it has a 12 inch speaker as well. I might upgrade mine to that as well. Make it a real gigable amp!!!!
Fantastic sounds, and playing as ever. Definitely a great mod that one that makes a huge impact and offering at no extra cost and with warranty, to be fair, is awesome! The single coil tele and Jazzmaster especially shined on this one for me (but thats subjective, I get it, and it all sounded great they were just my favs)
nothing beats the tele man, it's just the one. it's wild because it has the most low end I've ever heard out of a tele and I have to dial it back - it wants to be a les paul so bad
@ haha oh wow man! A best of both worlds tele! It sounds beautiful and I loved on the video when you played real quiet too, the dynamic changes and reaction to the amp (even through video so can’t imagine how beautiful it was in the room!) was wonderful, I love the delicacy of that tone! But yeah man so glad you’ve found that tele and that one!
Love the PR! Very cool this sweetwater version. However, the mods you suggested in the end are even more important in preserving this jewel for a very long time. Let's hope they will also consider these mods in the future. Great video and beautiful playing🤘
I had a sweet mij tele. I swapped the electronics and pots and put some lollars in it. I changed the guts but the bones of that guitar was killer. Best neck I’ve ever played
It's better in the room honestly, when I was editing the video I kept thinking man I wish there was a way to really demonstrate that but alas there is not
Fwiw my PRRI has been getting regular use gigs/playing every day. Stock has been dead reliable for over 10 years. I dropped a Weber 10F125 and a new speaker cable. Great little amp with or without pedals
I'm happy you've had nothing but positives with yours. Unfortunately I know of several people I've gigged alongside with that needed major work on DRRI and PRRI within 2-4 years of regular gigging. When I had the silverface I would constantly get offers on it because I was the only one that wasn't ever having amp problems haha. Speaker does make a big difference but that's about taste, reliability and durability things may not seem like a big deal but every amp should hold up as well as yours had outside of tube changes for at least a decade and sadly that's just not the case for a lot of brands these days ( outside of the higher end boutique stuff ).
I really appreciate that. I wish people would click on more of the actual music related stuff. I posted a full original album it has less than 500 views but shiny new piece of gear and people can't click fast enough haha... that's the guitar world these days.
I almost never enjoying watching people play/ demo gear. But I can sit and listen you play; it's tranquilizing! What is your background with music? I like the surf rock and indy mix!
I started as a drummer that wasn't liking the style of music the band I was playing with was playing so I just kind of taught myself how to play guitar. I think my style of playing reflects where my home and heart is which is san diego, and it's really humbling to read such a compliment. thank you for that.

They removed the 6.8k Resistor (R52) and installed a 10k or 25k A Taper (Audio / Log) potentiometer. And to slow the tremolo down they changed .01uF 400v Capacitor (C21) to a .022uF 400v. Also changed the value of (R14) 1M 1/2w to a 470k 1/2w to increase the depth of the tremolo -- Check out Psionic Audio Princeton Reverb Reissue videos for more reliability tips.
@@AudiomoMusic Lyle does a great job showing improvement areas. I mainly typed it out for others reading the comment section incase some others wanted to dive deeper.
@@MrChrisPalmer Sorry, I'm not sure on the more wattage out of the Negative Feedback section. I would imagine it is still the standard 2.7k ohm 1/2w resistor (R10) in the '65 PRRI, the '68 PRRI has a 5.6k 1/2w Resistor (R10). The '68 DRRI has a 1.5k 1/2w (R64). The '65 DRRI TRRI SRRI all have 820ohm 1/2w (R64). Higher the resistance generally more gain. Hence why the '68 PRRI & DRRI have more gain than the '65 PRRI & DRRI. But, if you wanted to try out a 1.5k instead of the 2.7k in the PRRI I would imagine it would clean up the '65 PRRI a bit more allowing higher volume before gain onset which might give you a few dB more of volume. Swapping out the Jensen C10R is another way to get more volume out of the PRRI. The Jensen collapses really early.
@@Vintage_375 Thanks. Psionic talks about being able to yield a few more watts out of a PRRI, and I’m pretty sure it was in the NF, but he keeps it under wraps - you know, IP and all that. I honestly don't think it needs it and felt the same way about my old 70's silverface princeton. I think it's part of the charm of the these simple amps for me at least, and I can play at night without waking up my wife or kid with the volume between 3-4 no problem.
Nice to hear a bit of Dylan at 7:20(?). To make you feel my love. If not, a beautiful song to check out. Nice playing and I love that you’re self taught.
Nice ears! I really like Dylan's progressions and I can hear a slight resemblence to make you feel my love. I take a lot of inspiration from that sort of music.
That’s a 2012 Fender Japan Super Thinline Deluxe, they rarely pop up for sale I think they only made 100 but man oh man… if you ever see one buy it it’s superb
The Clifton JR is a fine amp, really it's just a mojotone kit that Marsh then assembles and brands as his own but I really enjoyed it when I played it.
i've heard a celestion gold with a newer princeton and was really surprised at the sound. all about what kinda vibe you want out of the amp but lots of great options
I put in a Jenson P10R this week and what a difference! It's the absolutely the best ~$100 upgrade you can make. Anyone can replace a speaker in a Princeton, so other than this sweet Sweetwater mod, it's definitely the most cost effective upgrade you can make.
How would you compare this amp tone wise to your tone king gremlin. I got a surfy bear reverb that I use with my tone king so not worried about reverb. Just comparing it without effects.
I never use the lead channel on the gremlin, it's a little harsh and just not a sound I like but the rhythm channel is superb. It's all about how you play, if you like using a little more gain WITH wetter reverb settings you simply can't get the same sounds with the Gremlin as you can with the princeton. For a straight up clean tone only perspective, the gremlin with the bigger speaker sounds a bit fuller than this amp does, but it doesn't have the same top end. Both are great amps, but I found the lack of headroom on the gremlin to be a dealbreaker for gigging.
Sounded very good. I been using a 68 deluxe reissue for gigs. Would the princeton be able to be gigged with a mic and have enough head room. The weight is the biggest advantage. The one that i would like to see a review on is the sweetwater princeton with the 12 inch speaker. I really have minimal interest in a mid control or upgraded tremolo. Ive never used tremolo on a gig. And id rather see a celestion. I liked your dr z 100x better and would spend more money on an amp that uses quality components and not have to worry about it.
The Z isn’t going anywhere, it will take that amp spontaneously combusting for me to get rid of that one but it is still currently in need of maintenance
I got the Sweetwater Princeton with the 12" Cannabis Rex speaker in 2019, when it was $999 instead of $1499. At the time I figured 150 five star reviews can't be wrong, and that was absolutely the case. The TL;DR is that it was a no-brainer at the price I paid, but the 50% price hike in less than 5 years is really hard to stomach. When I first received it, I thought it was DOA because the amp itself was as quiet turned on as it was turned off. The Cannabis Rex isn't a traditional Fender sound, but it does take the icepick out of a Jazzmaster, and sounds heavenly on a 335's neck pickup. Does it compare to my 1968 Silverface Super Reverb? Of course not. But I'm pretty much 100% a bedroom player these days so the Super is strictly relegated to use with the Ox Box.
thats just somethin i noodled around trying to think of stuff to play for youtube demos that is starting to sound more and more like a song the more i play with it but i apprecaite that
Either buy one of these new with the mod and warranty, or save up and buy an old silverface from the 70's that's been recapped. Those amps are special man.
The TD17 is awesome right??? Been a life saver for me. Princeton is great and if it's what you really want better to wait it out and save for it then settle for something else
@@AudiomoMusic I'm ordering the tweed sweetwater one now, was able to get it down in price. Its still very expensive but yeah this is THE amp i'm going to use. And yeah, i love the td17. Very fun. Been playing drums since middle school and now i'm in my 30s and have been learning guitar slowly over the past 6 years. It was hard choosing between the 10" sweetwater mod shop or the sweetwater exclusive tweed 12". That extra touch of the mid and adjusted tremolo mod for the same price was very very very alluring, seems like a no brainer - but i just love the way the tweed looks. I have no emotional tie to a true replica of the original look or it having to sound exactly like a vintage 10" princeton so i just went with what i liked visually more since they both sound good anyway.
If I can find one in person I'll try it for sure. I have some stuff I still have to film videos for that youtube hasn't seen but after that i am done buying anything of any sort related to gear for a while until some stuff sells or I miraculously find a way to make actual money doing youtube haha.
So; the retail cost of the parts to do these mods is right around $10. So that shouldn't have much affect on the retail price of the amp. BUT - Even though the retailer gets an even better price than that for the parts, that's not all there is to it. There is also about 45 minutes to do the mod = labor cost. But most of all, If they are offering the mods (good ones, I think) at no added cost, the fact that they are standing behind the amp* with a 2 year warranty, well, that's the ball game right there. I can't think of another retailer that would make this kind of offer. Am I wrong to presume that the 2 year warranty is you supplant the voided Fender warranty* - not just warranty the mods themselves? *void only an issue if the amp went anywhere else for warranty service.
For $1395, Marsh Amplification will build you a hand-wired Princeton Reverb with a Mid control that you won’t have to modify and will last for decades.
Failure rates of those specific caps. Go bring it to an amp tech that actually does this for a living and has worked on these and he’ll tell you the same thing.
So, does that mean that Fender are producing amps properly at last ? It seems that some people on here have more idea than Fender themselves. ........ Not impressed with the hard distortion.
i don't think the hard distortion is the selling point, just something I know people would ask about if I didn't include some of it in the demonstration. it shines clean just like all other princetons do
My first decent,.....if you wanna call it that,.....was the Fender R.A.D.. It sounded absolutely horrific. I upgraded to a Princeton Chorus. You know if you know. If you started playing guitar in the 90's,......you might be mislead by certain Frnder products that dont nessecarily reflect the greatness and tradition of Fenders golden amps. Enter,.....what i call, The Red Knob age. The most horrific line of amps ever produced by Fender. Truly. So 2 years later i got to try out a REAL blackface Twin. It honestly confused me to no end. Here i had tried all these horrible carpet covered, red knobbed Fender amps and all the sudden I'm playing the best sounding amp ive ever heard????😂. Yes. It was an "OHHHHH. Okay!!". 😂 So thise amps weren't what Fender was really about. It was a confusing time for a nobody in nowhere Maryville Tennessee. Hell,....i eas lucky to even see a tube amp. Mych lass play one. 😂😂
Oh man, the red knobs. I remember laughing at how bad the cyber sounded but the rep at the Mars Music was telling me it's the best amp they ever made hahahahahahahaha I was lucky, the first real amp I bought int he 90's was a Music man 212HD and I still have it to this day. Only downsides are the weight and it's just so unfathomably loud it's just not practical for a lot of stuff haha
@AudiomoMusic Oh yeah. Those old MUSIC MAN amps are serious. The CyberTwin was hilarious imo. It was slightly cool,.... how the knobs turned independently,.... depending on the preset you chose.🤣 Anyway. Thanks for the convo. YT Recommended bringing the heat for me.😊 You got my sub. Maybe throw me one as well?😉🙏😌
Too much of the same ol shit being made and released. Like how about a damn three channel amp with fender clean/marshall crunch/ and soldano ubershaw lead? Ala the evh 5150iii.. theres not enough comparable options on the market for this kind of working horse amp. Im not a pedal guy either so i need my sounds to come from the AMP. Simply put, the last thing the market needs is MORE fender single channel clean amps and clones jesus… theyre just endless and its clean i dont get it.
for $1500, you shouldn't have to upgrade jack squat. Garbage speaker cable? WRONG! Crappy reverb tank? WRONG! This is why Fender will never get my business again save for some 351 picks and maybe a guitar cable.
351 picks?? My friend you gotta drive Dava controls! They are genuinely the only picks I have used since I started playin guitar and I couldn’t dream of using anything else haha
@ I will check them out. I just went through a huge pick project were I got a bunch of different ones. Right now I settled on the John Pearse celluloid picks
Crazy. I bought a fender twin reverb for 500 bucks back around 1980. It sounded 100 times better than this one. This sounds horrible. Like static distortion not warm at all. And 1500 bucks. Smh. Nope
Payin' nearly 2,600 ish bucks for this or similar in Oz,only for it requiring mods, replacement spk cable etc...I think not! Forking out good money for sub-standard Mexican shite poorly imitating the great originals is just Fender taking guit players for a ride.Still,it keeps amp techs in business I suppose.

challenge accepted, i'll make a video comparing with a pedal
Great review, I really loved the tele!
Which one, apparently the white one is very popular on here haha
What is that white Fender Tele Thinline with filtertron pickups ? Where can I find one …so very cool!
That’s a 2012 Fender Japan Super Thinline Deluxe, they rarely pop up for sale I think they only made 100 but man oh man… if you ever see one buy it it’s superb
whoa, what's that white tele thin line with the Gretsch pickups?? LOVE IT!
thats a Japanese FSR super thinline deluxe tele with lollartron pickups - it is KILLER
@@AudiomoMusic damn.. adding to my "want list"!
if you see one don't hesitate, they rarely pop up for sale
@ I noticed, just looking for them.
also avoid the US orange version, those things were built like crap and countless people had problems
How does this stack up to the marsh model?
The Clifton JR is a fine amp, really it's just a mojotone kit that Marsh then assembles and brands as his own but I really enjoyed it when I played it.
I've found that replacing the ceramic speaker with a Jensen Alnico (P-10 or P-12) makes a world of difference with the Princeton and Deluxe reissues.
i've heard a celestion gold with a newer princeton and was really surprised at the sound. all about what kinda vibe you want out of the amp but lots of great options
I put in a Jenson P10R this week and what a difference! It's the absolutely the best ~$100 upgrade you can make. Anyone can replace a speaker in a Princeton, so other than this sweet Sweetwater mod, it's definitely the most cost effective upgrade you can make.
What guitar is that man? The white tele
That’s one that took ages to find - a 2012 Fender Japan Super Thinline Telecaster Deluxe
What a great approved mod!
100% agreed - love it Rick
What is the exact model of your black Telecaster?
it's a 1984 fender japan vintage tl62b-70
Good demo, and I agree with your critiques. It could still be better.
It really wouldn't take that much either
Thanks 👍
You betcha, anytime!
holy smokes, princetons are 1499 now. I feel old.
So do I, I’m only 40 but man times have changed.
That was that 3rd strumming song you played? That was mighty purty
thats just somethin i noodled around trying to think of stuff to play for youtube demos that is starting to sound more and more like a song the more i play with it but i apprecaite that
@@AudiomoMusic awesome man, great video and playing. Been wanting a Princeton for a minute. Might have to look at this one
Either buy one of these new with the mod and warranty, or save up and buy an old silverface from the 70's that's been recapped. Those amps are special man.
Good review thanks! Worthwhile mods and cool that Sweetwater is offering, but still doesn’t seem worth $1500 for a reissue PR with a meh speaker.
I don't dislike the speaker since I'm mostly using single coils and cleaner stuff, but i can see why some people would want something else
I went from a gremlin to the handwired Princeton reverb and love it.
Does this mean you sold the Dr Z. And the Gremlin?
No, the only reason this opportunity even came up was because the Z is in for maintenance - that amp is going nowhere. The Tone King is gone though.
IC caps? (Man that white telly is gorgeous)
They are IC caps, but some of the least expensive ones IC offers and there isn't a big difference in price to upgrade them.
I see your td17 ;) I have the td17 kvx2 as well. I want this amp but its so expensive.
The best mod they could have made would been to have put an attenuator on it.
I don't think it needs it and honestly, i play at night with the wife and kid asleep and don't wake up anyone with the volume between 3-4.
Effects return?
Nope, no fx loop, no master volume, just a simple circuit
How much was a Princeton only 5 years ago?
I believe they were 999 if memory serves correctly
nice musicman
the amp that will live forever
Jim, go check out one of these at CME
Harmony Series 6 H620 1x12 20W Combo Amp
Regular price $749.00
If I can find one in person I'll try it for sure. I have some stuff I still have to film videos for that youtube hasn't seen but after that i am done buying anything of any sort related to gear for a while until some stuff sells or I miraculously find a way to make actual money doing youtube haha.
So; the retail cost of the parts to do these mods is right around $10. So that shouldn't have much affect on the retail price of the amp. BUT -
Even though the retailer gets an even better price than that for the parts, that's not all there is to it.
There is also about 45 minutes to do the mod = labor cost. But most of all, If they are offering the mods (good ones, I think) at no added cost,
the fact that they are standing behind the amp* with a 2 year warranty, well, that's the ball game right there.
I can't think of another retailer that would make this kind of offer.
Am I wrong to presume that the 2 year warranty is you supplant the voided Fender warranty* - not just warranty the mods themselves?
*void only an issue if the amp went anywhere else for warranty service.
You are correct with your assumption, the Fender Warranty is voided and Sweetwater are the ones exclusively offering the 2 year warranty with it
For $1395, Marsh Amplification will build you a hand-wired Princeton Reverb with a Mid control that you won’t have to modify and will last for decades.
For $1395, Marsh will build a Mojotone PR kit and stick the Clifton Reverb label on it
The filter caps are 100% going to last more than a "few years"
What the heck is this based on? lol
I remember laughing at how bad the cyber sounded but the rep at the Mars Music was telling me it's the best amp they ever made hahahahahahahaha
I was lucky, the first real amp I bought int he 90's was a Music man 212HD and I still have it to this day.
Maybe throw me one as well?😉🙏😌
!!!🤑
yes
Too much of the same ol shit being made and released. Like how about a damn three channel amp with fender clean/marshall crunch/ and soldano ubershaw lead? Ala the evh 5150iii.. theres not enough comparable options on the market for this kind of working horse amp. Im not a pedal guy either so i need my sounds to come from the AMP.
Simply put, the last thing the market needs is MORE fender single channel clean amps and clones jesus… theyre just endless and its clean i dont get it.
Fender own EVH, why would they go into competition with themselves when that is clearly their answer to exactly what you just asked for?
for $1500, you shouldn't have to upgrade jack squat.
And fender cables are rubbish
I had a 64 fender Princeton. That sounds like a modeling amp.....ridiculous
Dava is great i have been using them for years
@ I will check them out.
Smh. Nope
the truth is Fender makes cheap counterfeits. look inside
My brother in Christ, it's literally their own product. That's like saying Coca-Cola makes counterfeits of Coke. 🤦♂️
@@SonicProvocateur
Furthermore, Fender is not claiming any of their modern are 100% faithful recreations of their original amps.
But how do you really feel about it
😂....old man....worse,an old muso.YT is my venting platform cause if i go outside and yell at the traffic the neighbours laugh at me.😊@AudiomoMusic
The 65 Reissue amps are still US made (obviously with foreign sourced components).
Wow. You REALLY think this sounds good?
In the room it certainly does. I prefer the Z I have to it but it’s by no means bad either way.
