Are you a fan of the Tone Master series? This one and the Super-Reverb are my two favorites so far. Thanks to Fender for sending this out. I'll test this in the context of a band mix soon so stay tuned for that. 😄 Check it out. 🎸

Hi Shane great review as usual.
Yep I'm a Tone Master fan.
I recently got the Tone Master Super Reverb, it sounds so good (and even better after a firmware update) and does everything I need for the stuff I play.
As an older, 66, yet relatively new player (about 2 1/2 years at this point), I'll probably never get to hear a Tube Super Reverb, or afford one or be able to lift one, so the Tube vs Tone Master thing is a mute point for me.
I did get the chance to play a '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb and a Tone Master Deluxe Reverb back to back at my local Music store, I could not pick one over the other sound wise.
I was a bit surprised that Fender released the Princeton as the next Tone Master, I was hoping for a Super Sonic 60.
Having said that this Princeton really does sound sweet, and like my Super Reverb, the attenuation and cab sim XLR gives all of these amps the versatility for a wide range of uses.
      Cheers
      Pete

I’ve never played one in person but I like the concept and they seem to sound good in videos. My only concern is I’ve seen some videos where I thought some pedals (especially fuzz) didn’t sound great. Curious your thoughts on that point.

I drove 25 miles to my local Guitar Center on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood and picked up the Deluxe Tone Master. It doesn't disappoint at all! What I love about the Tone Master series is the real close emulation to the tube version at all levels. The light weight is the best feature to me it's so refreshing to carry it. As a "Boomer" like my children call me I'm not as strong as 35 years ago lugging those 64 pound Fender Twin Reverbs etc....plus the the attenuation helps so much to play at bedroom levels! Great series from fender. I knew you were going to like it! Thanks por the review!

Thanks for this Shane. It's nice to see that amp builders are considering the home recording users. The power attenuation is a great feature and the back panel controls for cab sim is very usable. My only gripe is the dirt tones. Maybe it's just me, but they feel a little ice picky and unnatural. If this is supposed to emulate a tube amp, I'm missing the warmth. If you're running effects before it and don't need the dirt in the amp then it's less of an issue, but often it's the over driven tones of an amp that often give it its character.

Good stuff Shane, I tried one of these in Tokyo earlier this year; killer tones! The sound of the reverb wasn't very convincing vs a true spring reverb to be honest, but it works if you want a reverb sound regardless. In the end, I managed to find a second-hand '65 Princeton Reverb Reissue with upgraded components and a beefier speaker that all together got me about 85% of the way towards an actual vintage 65 Princeton Reverb I tried in Portland, OR at Thunderroad Guitars.

Been gigging a princeton TM recently, and what I find almost eerie is how it 'feels' like a valve amp. Infact, there are ways in which it is actually preferable to a real valve amp. It has the immediacy of a SS amp, but the compression sensation that comes with valves.

Really good review. You hit all the important points. I've had them all and these Tonemasters are really good. Great for gigging musicians since they are lightweight and should not have the normal electronic issues with tube amps but also good at home with the attenuation, line out with emulations, and speaker off possibilities for recording.

    @silverwings1843 Рік тому +2

I have played one. The only improvement I can see is filtering out the transients known to that circuit. And when its not mic'd and just the room it's very very thin.
The Princeton was just a beginner's amp that found its way into the recording studios due to being so easy to tote around. KNOWING: That it would be mic'd
and the final sound pro eq'd. The best small all around amp remains the Deluxe Reverb. And if you take a Blues Deluxe or Blues Jr and replace the Plexi
Tone Stack (that Fender put in these to compete with Marshall) with Vintage Fender Tone Stacks.........They are just as good. And mod the bias as well. The
Princeton Tone Master is just another new mouse trap. Now.......The 65 Princeton Reverb Limited Edition is a complete different story...And as a side note:
No amplifier or guitar is going to make you sound like Sean !!!!! He is a Pro of Top Shelf Quality !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's his Soul and Hands you hear. Not the gear !!!

However I do have a Princeton reverb point to point that I built as a kit, and I have to say I wouldn't trade it for this one. It's a modding platform and I've done plenty of modding. thanks Shane for the test and the great tones. I also tested the Princeton Reverb. First impression was great because of the power attenuation and the weight and the clean sounds are fantastic. But if you use overdrive-pedals in front of the amp the amp is completely overextended. In particular with a fuzz pedal (Big Muff) i get the feeling the amp was completely lost with the "information" from the pedal, so the opposite to the tube amp which get to blossom out.
A great guitar combined with a tube amp could create a "kind of magic" which is hard to explain - in my opinion this "magic" doesn´t exist with the Tone Master Amps. For me the digital technology can´t reproduce the "organic-magic".

Not quite, the hybrid Super Champ XD or X2 (15W, 24lb) had multiple amp voicings and a much lower price tag. I have played the XD for four years, and it's just started to make some unexpected noises, so it may be time for some new tubes. Meanwhile I have switched over to a second spare XD that I snapped up a couple of years ago at a very good price. Hopefully I can cure the first amp with some new matched tubes that I have in stock.

I have the blonde version of the Deluxe Reverb Tone Master. IMO, the Princeton is not a different enough sound to have released it. The Princeton makes sense if we are talking about tube amps, but with the ability to attenuate the Deluxe Reverb, I don't see the need for both. Just my opinion. I have played the amp, and it sounds great.

Tone Masters vs Tube (small-sized combos) -
    1. ‘65 Deluxe Reissue
    2. ‘68 Princeton w/ Greenback
    3. ‘65 Princeton Tone Master
    4. ‘68 Deluxe Reissue
    5. ‘65 Deluxe Tone Master
In the Tone Master series, the smaller amps respond better in the low end. I was surprised by the Princeton Reverb. It sounded great on 6-7 volume and had XLR outputs to compensate for its lower wattage.
HUGE upgrade from the Twin and Deluxe TMs imo. At the price, tho, it’s not replacing my SuperSonic 22 Live (or a Blues Jr IV Tweed) and it’d be tough to justify over a used SuperChamp X2 for home use…tho, it IS sexy in all black.

I love the idea of the whole series, but I just can't get past the cost when there are so many far more versatile (and of equal quality) options for half the price. I understand that there's a premium that comes with the amp names themselves, but there's a limit to what I'd be willing to spend on what amounts to royalties.
