    Badass flying truck drivers, and I absolutely mean that as a compliment. Especially when they can park that truck in a compact spot, that moves. Great video.

    Love you guys and the great job you do! I am an original VRC-30 plank owner. Served VR-30 DET than changed to VRC-30 from 1977 thru 1980 we flew the Grumman C1A's and the Rockwell CT-39 Saberliner. Great group of men and women! Great memories AMS2 HR CRUZ Los Angeles Cal.

      Hi Rick, I was VR-30 too. I transitioned back to the 9's with VR-1024 (which later became VR-51) when the Det moved permanently to NI. I crewed the CT-39's as well. I was enrolled at San Jose Sate in the Aeronautical program and could not stay with the COD's; in those day the C-1A. Absolutely loved flying the CODs. Best flying I did in the NAV.

      PropBroChill17 also, damn fine 'staches' on those aviators! And although everybody loves a fighter pilot, I enjoyed the shit out of watching that break over the quarterdeck. The throttle control on a twin engine bird like that was impressive as well!

    I can't choose between this and the 50th Anniversary video as for which is better, stunning footage! It will be sad to see the Greyhound retired but hopefully the COD spirit stays the same with the V-22 if the current plans move forward. Great upload PropBroChill17

    I was with VRC-30 (aka the dirty 30) from 01-06. AME2 Cantrell. Did Det's with Det 1, Det 2, and Det 4. Took the Ronald Regan around the horn with them as well. Some of the best times of my life were with that command. Commander Drew Basden was the best CO in the Navy. Miss those days.

    I'll never understand why, as a platform, it wasnt developed further.
    With the same basic ar you would have the Hawkeye as the AEW version, the Greyhound as the COD version that could be used as an in-flight refuelling plane by carring extra tank and a hose extender in the cargo hold, and even an ASW version could be made by changing the sensors and adding external weapons stations

    Isn't this type of aircraft redundant now? Surely a decent sized helicopter can carry similar loads and at just slightly lesser speeds. What are these aircraft going to be replaced with? They seem really dated.

    Why all navy pilots have mustaches ?? Is it a tradition? Statement? Recognition?

    • @skytrainii
      @skytrainii 7 років тому

      Cause we can. In VR-30 (not VRC-30) during 1975 we, the COD Crew, sported full beards. If you had to ware an O2 mask, you couldn't have a beard cause you can't get a good seal. But Mustaches were good as long as you didn't put wax on them. The wax didn't get along with the O2 that well (or maybe I should say, too well.) We had C-1A's then, not C2's and we did not have O2. Thus the full beards. But the C-2's fly higher and have O2 masks for the crew. I also flew the C-9B's and the CT-39's so I had to get rid of the beard but could keep the mustache.
      And yes, it was traditional for COD crew members to have beards. In fact, it was a prerequisite to have a beard before you could be qualified as an FCPC.
