There are still ceremonies with snakes in modern Greece. Usually connected with some Christian saints, on specific churches, but in reality the ceremonies are traces of the ancient habits of Greece
The fact that snakes shed their skin and literally grow afterwards has always made them the perfect symbol for spiritual growth. From the Naga of Hinduism to Jesus commanding His followers to "Be Ye wise as serpents...", the idea of the Cosmic/Spiritual Serpent form is virtually timeless and appears in every single culture that have regular contact with them, and many cultures where reptiles are actually quite scarce (e.g. Northern Europe). Anyone who has ever had snakes as pets knows just how gentle and friendly they can be. The Ancients also made a distinction between a harmless snake/"serpents" and a poisonous "asp"/Cobra, for example. Although, snake "charmers" have been defanging snakes for millennia to make them safe to handle. They literally just cut/rip the fangs off. Crude, but effective and "magical" to the ignorant. Great vid. Happy New Year!
Not exactly related to the video but in Malta we recount the story of the shipwreck of Saint Paul in the year 60 AD when the islands were a Roman domain. The bible recounts how Saint Paul was bitten by a viper shortly afterwards with the local population assuming that this must be some divine punishment.
