I've been compiling my experiences from an epic adventure through Greece earlier this year. Walking (/driving) in the footsteps of some of the greatest ancients, we travelled from Athens, up to Delphi, across the Rio-Antirrio Bridge, around the Peloponnese and back.
Such an Odyssey couldn't come without a video, and the scale of it has turned out to be big enough for several videos!
So with that, please join me on my travels in part five - Sparta! Nestled within the Evrotas Valley behind the mountain walls of the Taygetos.
We were greeted by heavy rain and the thunder of Zeus, a fitting welcome to this mythical land renowned for its martial prowess. But when the rain stopped and the clouds lifted the light of Sparta shone through and it was clear that this city, now called Sparti, is a true gem of Greece.
An acropolis more peaceful than its legacy would suggest was a calming presence and made this place a truly remarkable destination.
We then continued to Tegea, heartland of Arcadia, to stop at Sparta's neighbour - a worthy adversary in war and another jewel of the Peloponnese.
Stay tuned for the final chapter in this Odyssey when we travel to the Archaic kingdoms of Mycenae, Argos and Tiryns!

Were Snakes kept as Pets in Ancient Greece & Rome?
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Рік тому
If you search for pets in antiquity, it's likely you'll stumble upon snakes. It's a common story that the ancient Greeks & Romans kept them as pets, but where did this story come from, and is it true? Looking at religious sources, historical and satirical, I try to paint together a clearer picture of snakes during these times. What role did they play? It may well have varied according to lifest...
SATURNALIA - Rome’s Most Popular Festival
Переглядів 6 тис.Рік тому
The Ancient Roman festival of Saturnalia might have been the OG December festival, originating as far back as 500 BCE. For over a thousand years, Romans from the Kingdom, Republic and Empire would drink and make merry in the name of the Titan Saturn, father of Jupiter. Emulating a bygone Golden age, slaves would become masters, commoners could become kings, and even soldiers campaigning in the ...

Antigonus the One-Eyed: Alexander's most Ambitious General
The book Falcon of Sparta by British author Conn Iggulden is loosely based on the Anabasis.
Instead of worrying about your pronunciation of Ancient Greek, how about learning how to pronounce the modern French term, “coup de grâce”. Hint: the “p” is silent.
I always found curious, the cities they passed that were constructed for giants. Empty cities
Thalassa! Thalassa!
Why is Xenephon not really taught or unknown?
A great tale and a new subscription.
I have often wondered what these soldiers and ancillary people did for food and water. And so I have disbelieved tales of Alexander the Macedonian in his wars against the Persians, that over 200,000 were involved. From where would such a number obtain their food and water? Certainly, they would have done what the later Mongolians did and that was steal. Which would have meant wholesale starvation for the rest of the populace.
Homer the liar
Greeks the greatest LIARS
sounds like they were tamed but not domesticated morphologically
The Lost Army Hardcover by Valerio Massimo Manfredi. Beautiful book that tells this story
& directed by Ridley Scott.
I sincerely hope a film is never made of this! Look at the rubbish that’s usually put out there. Hollywood pseudo history!
Nice presentation but your pronunciation is brutal
It's so funny hearing the Erasmic pronunciation. Modern Hellenes (in Hellas and Cyprus) would find the sound of deltas, thetas, gammas, phi's etc. of the video weird.
Well, on my next trip to the 5th century I will know how to say that one!
It is pretty hard to learn ancient greek directly without understanding the structure of modern greek...
Just finding this video now, on the way from Thebes to Delphi, there is a town called Chaeronea which holds the lion of Chaeronea monument, this lion is dedicated to the destruction of the sacred band (150 couples aka 300 elite Theban soldiers) and has their skeletons buried underneath, the site is a must see in that region and is even more important than Leuctra since it was the main event that started Macedonian hegemony and then Alexanders conquests.
Where did you find that the Gaulish word Dunoi related to Oppidum?
The Bronzen army
Circe was not a hero. Raising the child of a hero or a child tagt will become a hero doesn't make someone a hero. Also, her actions don't seem heroic. She 1) turned countless people even before Odysseus' crew, into animals 2)the only reason why je slept with her was because Hermes told him to so that she'd change back his men. Also I'm surprised why Ajax was so low on the list. Dude literally had a role of protector and defender. And after he saw how his madness nearly made him kill his friends he committed suicide out of shame.
Read "The lost Army" of Massimo Valerio Manfredi.
After the initial generals were executed, Ξενοφών was elected one of the new generals and fifth in command, (not the leader)
The Greeks face the Turks in the modern world, unfortunately from my knowledge they are a maiden for the ravishing . Invasion of foreign people's, and the young leaving. I aee no hope.

Where did you find that Athens was a hive of international and multicultural activity? Where on earth did it come from?
Very nice try on reading the Greek text, however the "ει" and "οι" are diphthongs and are pronounced as a single letter "ee" and not as two letters "ae-ee" or "o-ee". Also, "Ξενοφών" is not pronounced "Zenophon" but "Xenophon" with an X and the accent tone is on the "on" and not the "Ze". These, among others, are common mistakes of the Erasmian accent used in the West, trying to pronounce the Greek words with Latin characters. One objection, involves the arbitrary tendency of modern historians to downplay the numbers mentioned in ancient sources, just because they seem too large. The Greeks could count, so if they say they were 13 000, it is very unlikely that the entire army of Cyrus was only 15 000. As far as the 1 200 000 troops of the other side, although it seems to be a very large number, one should realize that the Persian empire spanned from Turkey and Egypt, all the way to Afghanistan, bordering India and controlled over 80 million people at the time. The video is an excellent work regarding the two historical books of Xenophon: "Κύρου Ανάβασις" (Rise of Cyrus) and "Η Κάθοδος των Μυρίων" (The Descent of the Myriad i.e. 10 000).
whether you practice or not..makes no difference!
Theatre itself is Greek, yuppp!, I read that there isn't one single thing in today's world, not anything that we can think of that the Greeks didn't touch on, and we have only one percent, if that, of what they left to the world... Thank you for this Great rendering of Anabasis
Where are the MAPS from each chapter?,. ANNOYING ; (
Sorry, but a normal educated greek person, would understand everything, this language is not dead
The audio is painfully bad. Weaves in and out. I don't think I can make it through the video. I recommend investing in a decent mic or better voice recording software.
Love this!! Thank you!! 💜

What are the sources?
There's a Chinese novel called "Mediterranean Hegemon of Ancient Greece" about the Ten Thousand.
Thank you!
"Coop de Grass"?
Nice Greek with American Accent
Didn’t they also have a form of football? Also, I know they were known for their wine, but didn’t they have ale and mead too?
So Agrippa was the ‘ renaissance man ‘ of antiquity
The use of the word “ανάχωση” is inaccurate. You must mean the Ανάβαση of Cyrus Jr (= Anábasis, 401 BCE) or the Επιστροφή (= Return) of the Mýrii (= 10000, which has signaled the actual beginning of the Hellenistic Era: 399 BCE). Because Hellenism does not begin with Alexander's death, and does not end with Cleopatra's death (the conventional span: 323-31 BCE). Hellenistic Era, or Hellenismus: 399 BCE (Return of the Ten Thousand from Iran) - 224 CE (Fall of the Arsacid Dynasty in Iran). Of course, Hellenismus differs from the generic use of the “#Hellenes” national designation: 776 BCE (“1st” Olympics) - 415 CE (Fall of the last non-Roman state with a Greek presence: the Kardamaka Dynasty of Ujjain, Indoscythian Kingdom).
Did the Greeks have barbells, or only dumbbells?
It is great you give the original texts. Who has any issue with more of that on a channel such as yours is beyond me.
I love history and am a huge fan of historical fiction. One of the best historical fictions I've ever read was by Michael Curtis Ford called The Ten Thousand.
