The Germany footage on UA-cam is brief but has great shots of bill from all angles. It's from 1970 and I think the best live film version, if only we can find all the gig.
Ozzy saying "we love you" is what Ozzy has always done. Lots of recordings of Sabbath exist showing Ozzy saying that. Plus, he always flashed the peace sign.
The meaning is he loves his fans 🤘
I've seen Ozzy a few times, solo and with Sabbath. In those shows, he's told me that he loves me more than my own family has.
He's always had a tremendous appreciation for the fans, and he let you know at every show.
Ozzy genuinely loves playing live and the love from the fans.
When Ozzy tell the crowd we love you, he means it. There is no meaning behind it. He just loves them

Andrew, you asked so I'm replying. I saw Black Sabbath in 1973 in Leicester, England. They had just released Sabbath Bloody Sabbath I think. I was 15 and with a few friends who were also obsessed with them at the time. They gave an awesome performance and set the bar for my future concerts. I remember Bill looked manic behind his kit but his playing was out of this world. Tony had Orange amps and cabs at the time and Geezer was playing a plexiglass bass. Videos of old shows are great to watch and always bring it back. I saw Ozzy again with a Randy Rhoads a few years later. They were good but Black Sabbath had a charisma I can't explain. I appreciate your insights into the music and I'm pleased that Bill Ward is getting the appreciation he deserves but often misses

What I will say about Ozzy: In person, one of the most charismatic performers I've ever seen. There is an infectious excitement you get with Ozzy. He is absolutely amazing at connecting with the audience. When he runs on stage at the start of the show you can literally feel how exhilarated he is, how much he loves doing it and how happy he is to have an audience throwing energy back at him. One time when I saw him he nailed a difficult passage, and I swear I could feel his happiness at having nailed it. I've seen Ozzy on good nights and bad nights, and I've never seen him phone it in. He's always giving it all, and when he's having a tough time on stage you can see how much it agonizes him to let down the audience.
There's a great story from when they were doing motion capture for a Guitar Hero game. Ozzy was in the studio providing mocap but he just wasn't able to pull it off. So they assembled twenty people, put them in front of him as an impromptu audience, and suddenly it was Ozzy the madman.
Standard Ozzy behaviour: pacing back and forth, jumping on the spot, clapping and shouting "We love you!"
Worth mentioning that Don Kirchner did not want Black Sabbath on his show, but the public demand was so great that he relented. The performance of Killing Yourself to Live on this show is also well worth watching.
I saw Black Sabbath a few times. I have been to many concerts of great rock bands, but for reasons I can't really explain, Black Sabbath live was far and away the best live rock band in their day for me - the best songs, the best sound, no showiness but 100% commitment to their music. They were always very loud but you could always comprehend what you were hearing if you know what I mean. Some bands live are loud but sound a mess!
I have seen them 5 times with this lineup. Including this tour when I was 17 (Asbury Park NJ August 4, 75 w/ my girl & later wife). Great show in a hot as blazes arena.
The last tour, THE END being of course the last show I saw without Ward sadly but thrilled just the same some42 years later.
Don Kirshner did this with a few bands taking excerpts of actual concerts. This one being in Long Beach CA. a couple weeks after I had seen them during the tour promoting Sabotage.
The band knew this was going out for TV broadcast and during Snowblind Ozzy did not say Cocaine! though the audience certainly mouthed it. LOL
They are at their peak in this era and though there is a missing verse here ("HAND OF GOD has struck the hour" . I enjoyed watching and your reaction👍👍👍

I think some of the people were there just as part of the audience but ozzy is like that at every concert, he is an amazing frontnman. Such an incredible, inspirational band.
Where to start, when this was on tv which was after 1130 at night , it was a miracle that sabbath was even on t v and i recorded this off our t. v speaker with a tape recorder to listen to a 100 times over. Also i saw them during the sabatoge tour which this show was filmed , i was front row in front of ozzy in front of iommis laney amps, talk about epic distortion. Nobody ever has came close to the perfect distortion that comes from those tube/ jbl. Speaker cabinets. Greatest band ever during their greatest era.
I also recorded this off the tv with a cassette recorder. Still have the cassette. You nailed the guitar sound. The fattest,heaviest guitar sound ever.Even the solos sound huge. I didn't see them until '78 and while good,they weren't as good as '75.They were at their peak here.
My favorite live version of War Pigs is at the first California Jam in April of 1974. Bill gets lots of screen time and the band just killed it.

Yes my father left me not only a legacy of albums, but also a legacy of the love for the counter culture of the time-music and films.He lived through the north of rock ‘n’roll in the 50’s and through the 60’s-70’s in LA. He had many wild stories and never stopped listening to music untill he passed in summer 2021.
I saw them live back in the day.. everyone was so happy and kind and everything felt safe and people in the crowd were so peaceful.. just great times...

Don Kirshner's Rock Concert was an incredible late-night show that showcased an amazing variety of musicians. Some of the performances are legendary, including Zappa in 1974 and the Ramones in '77.
That’s just Ozzy. He’s ended almost every concert in his career with “Thank you, we love you, goodnight”.

What an AWESOME band! Geezer Butler and Bill Ward were a terrific Rhythm Section together that always laid the foundation for Tony Iomi’s unbelievably impressive Riffs. And “Ozzy” John Osborne one of the greatest Rock vocalists and Frontman Rock has ever seen. Thanks so much for sharing this amazing video!
This was a blast to watch, and you did a fantastic job as always! Did you notice Geezer helping out the crowd on the claps by snapping his fingers? You don't see that kind of crowd interaction with modern bassists, which was part of the Geezer charisma that everyone loved. Ozzy was always saying "we love you all", which was one of his trademarks. I've seen them live many times, and it was crushingly loud. You could feel the bass hit you like a punch in the stomach. Every time Iommi soloed or hit one of those power chords, it was like watching something you could feel was special and historic. No cell phones! Watching it on TV was not even something you could record, so it had a thrill like being at a show in person. Bill Ward never failed to slam with great rhythm.
Yeah, The California Jam the previous year was a huge thrill on TV and local FM radio was simulcasting it, so we could blast it out the stereo! 🎸
And Geezer wrote 100% all the lyrics for the band.

Late night TV show weekly with various bands. Went on to have the In Concert series on ABC and then The Midnight Special. We used to wait all week to see these shows. Especially when our favorite bands were featured. OZZY regularly told the audience they loved them during their career. The bell shaped or fringe shirts he wore are my favorites and they were made by a fan I believe.
Midnight Special had some stellar stuff.
We so looked forward to those shows each week to cap off weekend nights, it sure gave you a chance to see all kinds of great bands. 🎸
I saw them live back in 1979, Anaheim stadium,(southern California) all day show with Van Halen, Sammy Hagar, and Boston....good times 😁
I saw them twice in New York City in 1971. The air was filled with their energy and the thick marijuana plume. The first Sabbath concert I attended had the lineup of Montrose (Sammy Hagar was the lead singer), Black Oak Arkansas, Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath. Absolutely unforgettable!

The only time I ever saw them live was at the Cal Jam in Ontario California in April of '75. Was 15 at the time. I went with three of my cousins and some of their friends. It was a magical day, watching some of the best bands of the decade and smoking weed incessantly.

Sabbath theme was devils and witches. like actors for a Hammer horror movie, at the end of the day would go to the Pub for a beer and brush it off. Recently Bill auctioned off the cymbals he owned from the start of his career, 18' to 24' inch nothing smaller, quite sure they are Zildjian and Zyn cymbals.. Supernought is a killer song with a percussion solo middle 8 that keeps on giving. THANKS for the video,
Love the way Bill keeps the Hi-hat 'chicking' all the way through his drum breaks- whether it is a fast or slow phrased break, the hi-hat ostinato does not change! Legend.
Too young to see them in 1978/79 Never Say Die Tour, not allowed to go to in 80/81 with Dio - The one gig they did with Gillan in the U.K. for Born Again was down in Reading & we couldnt get organised being just 14. Saw in '84 when just Tony Iommi was left awesome guitar & songs but the other 3 were missed. Saw them in 1999 reunion in Portland, OR they were unbelievable - Bill bloody Ward!!! One of my drum heroes ( along with Ian Paice, Brian Downey (Thin Lizzy), & John Bonham).
I finally saw how to 'correctly' play the 'War Pigs' Hi-hat part!! - both 'chick' AND right handed played notes at the same time with a flick of the wrist for the 2 chokes before the chords come in! - Thanks Bill!! - nothing like learning your licks IN-PERSON from these legends!
They played 'After Forever' as the second or third song of the gig ( They opened with War Pigs) - After Forever was SO LOUD, that I didnt recognise it until the main riff cycled for the third time! - and right in that moment, I thought that if I snuffed it on the spot right there, then my life was complete! What a song live. Ozzy had a cold on this gig, so they ommitted Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (sans the insane 'Where can you run to....' verses, which they had been doing on the tour and Spiral Architect). Great gig. Bill Ward as usual took a solo on his massive pecussion ensemble of drums including his beloved octobans, 16 inch rack toms, and 2, 26 inch Bass Drums - an anomaly in any drumset in 1999!! Brilliant.
Saw them also later with both Vinnie Appice ( Heaven & Hell with Dio - awesome ( I and Time machine, H&H, falling of the edge of the world, die young) killler everything, but sans BW.
Saw them several times with Tommy Clufluetes(sp?), who, in homeage to Bill Ward did his long black hair into platts ala Bill Ward on the Never Say Die! Tour - which was not lost on all us BW devotees - and also lovingly crafted his drum set to mimic some of Bill's late 70's kits. Although not a jazz drummer/ percussionist like Bill, he has worked hard to get close to replicating the jazzy swing that Bill infused into Sabbath. ( there is some video of him playing the Wizard in a studio around 'The End' tour where this is refreshingly apparent!
Saw Ozzy solo in '83, '84, Derby Assembly rooms, Donington Monsters of Rock respectively. Great gigs- Carmine Appice and Tommy Aldridge both great on drums. Jake E. Lee on guitar, Bob Daisley on bass ( Sharon Arden/Osbourne had asked Bob back to write lyrics & songs just 2 years after he said - ' If you fire, Lee (Kerslake of the original 79-81 Blizzard of Ozz Band), you have to fire me too'. Ironically, she had hired Aldridge to replace Kerslake ' because 'he looked better', and Aldridge's drum part was replaced by Carmine on the Bark at the Moon album, before she sacked Appice & put Aldridge back in the drum seat for 1984!). Ozzy is a great frontman. Sharon Arden is a ruthless business manager! Black Sabbath with or without Bill Ward have always delivered, although we all prefer Bill to be on drums!! Cheers for the review mate & keep a Snowblind studio version on your list as the live versions do not showcase Bill's delightful ghost notes, hi- hat work and the ways he subtly pulls & pushes the song along. Masterclass! 👍
Seen them on their 99 reunion tour. Tony's guitar shook the arena floor and I've seen numerous trash bands up to that point but that show was incomparable and unforgettable. Highlighted my concert career. Loved the band since my aunt gave me their paranoid album in 78
Saw them headline Ozzfest about that time and the great bill was in Sabbath's shadow and you knew why as soon as War Pigs came on!
Bill Ward was massive on that 1999 reunion tour.....especially for those of us like me, who were too young to get down to see them on the Never Say Die! Tour

Hi Andrew, you asked about Ozzy saying "we love you" to the crowd and whether it was an affectation for that particular performance, or was it "just Ozzy". It's definitely "just Ozzy". There are numerous live recordings (Live at Last, Past Lives as albums released by their label, as well as the myriad bootlegs of course) over the years and it's an idiosyncratic Ozzy 'thing', such was his authenticity and appreciation of the fans.
Great commentary, Andrew! Love it. Black Sabbath changed my life. I was 8 years old in 1970 when I first heard the Paranoid album, it really did change my life. There's an old saying that some people hide from real life in their music. For me, it's the other way around. Sabbath effected me so much that I wanted to hide from music in real life. I did not hide though. I was brave, took lessons, learned the craft and honoured Sabbath on stage as a performing artist. Best time of my life. 😎

Not only did I see them live I also saw them with Dio and with Ian Gillian of Deep Purple.. I personally thought Ian absolutely killed the old Ozzy songs like Dio could not do.. in fact I think the album Born Again he did with them is highly underrated and it had a unique sound that just clicked.. but everything they did was great.. I don't know if there's any video of Ian with them out there but if you want to hear them with a different sound check out the song Trashed
I saw Ian in both Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, he was extraordinary every time. Born Again is well worth a listen! How many different great forms of heavy music is Tony Iommi responsible for?
That’s just Ozzy! Saw Sabbath twice during the mid to later 70’s in Anaheim and Long Beach, Calif. I remember I saw their performance on Don Kirschners, I would’ve been 15 at the time.
I saw them in concert in '73, Andrew (actually, my first ever concert) and I can confirm that this was just how Ozzy/Black Sabbath was/were. Ozzy was, indeed, a great front-man.
Ozzy is just so appreciative of where he got two. And yes he does love everybody. LOL

Hi Andrew, the BEST live video of "War Pigs" is "1970 Paris Live War Pigs". Bill Ward's playing is filmed much more clearly, and the drumming is monsterous! My favorite drummer is Keith Moon, but Ward's playing on "1970 Pigs" just blew me away. Ward's "Power Drumming" is terrifying to hear, and physically exausting to watch, yet demonstrates his artistry, skill, and total comittment to the song. "1970 War Pigs" is my #2 Rock Drum Performance. (My #1 is Moon's "A Quick One While He's Away" from "Rolling Stones R&R Circus")
I have seen Black Sabbath ten times over the years and the were great I have been in the front row and it was powerful I have been right in front of Geezer Butler and the Bass is powerful almost like taking a gut punch it rumbles through your whole body,and they are hands down the loudest band I have seen too. I neglected to bring my earplugs and my ears were ringing for three days after the show.
The band is at its best playing live and it is impossible to capture the energy of them live. I have a high end audio system capable of driving the sound clear up to over 110 db if I wanted to be deaf as a post if I listened to more one song at that level but it does come in a distant second.
Ozzy was always saying I/We love you all and throwing peace signs ,still does .
The first real venue show that I saw was Black Sabbath around 1973. They were tight as can be. The clothes, the band, everything was perfect. Back then the air was full of marijuana smoke and that was with any rock band there performing. You would get high just breathing without smoking anything. The police did not even bother searching people. There was just too much of it there. This was in Knoxville, TN. at the Coliseum. Years later, I was at the same venue, and I saw Ozzy solo. That was the last show Randy Rhoads played. I would have to say, what you saw here is the way they were.

There is also a recorded performance from the last tour with the original line up, on the Never Say Die Tour. There are great performances of all the best songs, and Dirty Women is especially great. Iommi plays a face melting solo and you get a close up of his playing and it’s so smooth and effortless. Highly recommended. Dirty Women live 78 will get you to the video.

5 years after the Paris video and you can see/hear the wear and tear on Bill...just not the same. They lived very hard in those years.
For those of us that are just too young, this footage is gold dust. I'm not a drummer\musician but I love the technical analysis you're doing for my favourite band and therefore drummer 😊. To mix it up a bit, it would great if you review 'Looking For Today' from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and 'Johnny Blade' from Never Say Die. Two brilliant tracks in there own right and hopefully I'm right in saying they both have a shuffle beat. I'd love to hear your thoughts! Keep up the great work ✌
I only saw them live once, during their The End Tour in 2016. They still blew the roof off the arena! Even though Bill Ward was not present.
Now, another band I've enjoyed live is Deep Purple. I know you've featured a few but I think it's time for one more. I'd love it if you would listen the song Lazy, live in Copenhagen in 1972. Many of their songs leave great room for improvisation which they really make use of in this one. They have a video on their official channel which is of great quality. Other great examples of Paice's ablities include; 'Highway Star', 'Pictures of Home', 'Fireball', 'No No No', 'Burn', 'Lay Down, Stay Down' and many more. Thank you for all your videos. Keep rockin'!
Don Kirshner was a promoter. At the height of the rock era in the 70's he introduced America to many great bands like Sabbath and Kansas.
You can even hear them mention Mohagany Rush at the beginning of this video, as another guest that night. If you've never seen Frank Marino play guitar, you really should. He's always got a great band.

Saw Mahogany Rush Twice and Frank Marino solo after that, remarkable guitarist, he opened for Lou Reed who was having a bad night and blew him away! And I love Lou Reed but the Fender Stratocaster was the star of that night.

Interesting they played this song tuned down live here in a different key than the original studio version.
I'd have to watch the rest of the concert (again) to make sure, but I think they didn't want to switch out any instruments: the newer songs were all played in C#, so they played the older songs in the same tuning.

Saw them live in 1975 in Adelaide, Australia with Statas Quo on the same program, savagely wicked show. And again in 2013 with Tommy Clufetus on drums, average drummer that doesn't measure up to Bill Ward.

Seeing Black Sabbath live is better than Sex, and I saw Black Sabbath 13 times (8 Times with Ozzy, 3 times with Dio, once each Ian Gillian and Glenn Hughes). Beyond blessed! All 4 members were in the very top of musicianship, Ozzy certainly as a frontman and they had it from the early 70s all the way until seeing them on the End Tour, saw them last in 2013. They just continue to be a huge part of the soundtrack of my life. They are not just the best Metal Band for me but also in my all time top 10 of Rock Bands, period. Try Warning from the debut album if you have not already, all the evidence I ever needed was in my ears and my head the first time I heard it in 1970. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶

Sabbath used a track they wrote called Supertzar as their intro tape and when that started to play and the backdrop descended at the back of the stage you knew you were in for an amazing time and were transported to another dimension for 90 minutes or so when Ozzy came on stage it was like seeing the messiah and you had no care in the world you were there in that time and space a bomb could have dropped on you and you wouldn't have noticed or cared about it lol

I had just become the bass player for the high school jazz band as a junior when this came out and yes - I was learning my Black Sabbath then. Geezer taught me so much during my formative years and what's not to say about Bill Ward? (I was still drumming in high school concert/marching bands as well) I began at an incredibly interesting time in musical history.

I was just listening to a cover or War Pigs by Black Sabbitch and was amazed at how different the timing was. Bill Ward loves to use the last 5% of the beat. This cover band kept normal time and it never felt quite right. Always like it's being rushed.

I saw Sabbath at this time and I still have a carnation (albeit dried up) that I caught when Bill threw them from his kit into the audience!

I've saw Sabbath three times up through '82. Loud? No, unreal loud. Tony sounded like metal grinder.

Black Sabbath was the first concert I attended, at age 13, in Jacksonville, FL, 1974, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath tour. I got to see my musical heroes! Unfortunately, I was somewhat disappointed, because Ozzy was off that night, and Tony was rather stiff. I later heard that they were at the beach earlier in the day, and Tony suffered from sun poisoning. Not sure how true that was, but I readily bought the excuse. Still love them anyway!
I believe the best live version of War Pigs is off the Live at Last album, lmo the whole album is a great example of Sabbath's raw energy & power, Ozzy voice sounds great as opposed to numerous bootlegs where his voice has been thrashed from the tour, they are all in top form like theyre on a mission.
I used to watch that show, and saw some pretty good bands, but the heavier stuff like this was not very often..
Have you ever checked out Jaki Liebezeit and Can? There's not a lot of good live footage of them but Paperhouse from 1971 at the Beat Club is pretty cool. They were a bit different but very influential and Jaki was quite the drummer.

It’s such a pity that Bill Ward is so underrated as a drummer. He really had a very unique style of playing , even if it wasn’t considered conventional, it was still very unique to him and geezer Butler is definitely one of the most important bass players in heavy metal as he had a hand to play (mind the pun )in creating the genre.

They probably edited the song down for time on the broadcast. I don't think sabbath would have omitted the 3rd verse and bridged right into Luke's Wall out of the solo section.
Yes, I saw Original Sabbath three times. They were *absolutely incredible* at two of them, when Ozzy was "on!"
Saw Ozzy, Geezer and Tony with Mike Borden in '97. They sounded great. But, no Ward? No Sabbath.
Saw the Born Again tour with Ian Gillan and Bev Bevan. That was outstanding as well! But, I just call that Born Again not Sabbath.
Saw Ozzy solo at Bark At The Moon and Ozzmosis, and yes, he has always told the crowd that "we love you" and "God bless you all."

@jasoncutler6615 It was common during the seventies version of Sabbath live before teleprompters. First time I saw Sabbath was Mar 7th 72 before Vol.4 was recorded and Ozzy had the lyrics to Tommorows Dream and Snowblind taped to his microphone stand to help him remember.

I saw the final two tours that Ozzie did with the band. The albums released at the time were Technical Extasy and Never Say Die. Sabbath was one of many bands I saw in their prime which is the reason I don't pine to see them now for nostalgic reasons.

Don Kirshner’s RC-wise, l recall my frustrated fury, waiting, and waiting for the Mahavishnu Orchestra’s segment, and the show is almost over, and FINALLY, there they are, with the credits rolling over them. Billy Cobham was their superb drummer. You are perhaps familiar?
