You didn't have audio when you watched it? He said it was a very basic variation just to get the hang of it. He said there are many other ways to do the dance but this is focused on just the very basic. I think you missed that somehow.
This is the best-produced dance instruction video I have ever seen. (I've not seen super many of them, and those others have all been amateurist.) Ultra-basic dance concept here, but really well presented. Bravo! From my perspective as a long-time social dance instructor, this video should have been titled either "Texas Two-Step", or "Country-Western Two-Step". The "classic" two-step uses a different footwork rhythm, but "two-step" in the U.S. in my understanding does now refer to this three-count, four-step basic pattern. If you really want to learn how to dance, go out dancing at good halls with good music! There are a lot of great social partner dances out there! The two-step, of whatever style, is a great social dance!!! Thank you for this really fine video!
Going to a country bar this weekend. This will be a lifesaver. That being said, will I be out of place in black wingtips, dark jeans and a sports coat?
that's his wife, Nicola. they are adorable, and great teachers in person, too. she once did a two-step lesson with her newborn strapped to her chest in a baby carrier =]
I took a few group lessons with Robert when he visited Orlando, Florida a very long time ago at Dance Orlando. His wife is even prettier in person. They are the best teachers I know.
I first seen Robert compete nationally in Arizona about 15 years ago. He has many championship trophies. But that is Swing Dancing. To be equally great at country shows the extent of his ability as a dancer.
For all you complainers about this video...This is simply the BASIC steps. Once you get these down you can add turns, etc. It's whatever YOU and your partner feels comfortable with. Got it? Good. Now dance.
what has always frustrated me with this dance is how the main step seems to repeat itself after 3 beats (2 eighth notes, followed by two quarters) while almost every mainstream country song is in 4/4.
You are correct that the music is in 4/4. The means there are 4 quarter notes or beats per measure. But the dance measure is 6/4, that is, 6 quarter notes or beats per phrase (my term to help you understand). Put another way, each phrase is 1 1/2 measures. You repeat the phrase so you take 3 measures to get back to where you started. Total 12 beats. If you learn fox trot, swing, polka, or other 4/4 dance, it is the same. Even triple time swing is based on 4/4 even though the beat is more complex. The phrases do not match the measures. You dance to the beats, not the measures. Hope this helps.
alfredoking14 As a beginner, work with slower songs. "All My Exes Live in Texas" or "Mercury Blues" are two to begin with. There are websites with lists of songs you can two-step to. Some sites even list the tempo.
+Howcast *Thanks for the confirmation on a style of dance* that's a relative of the Fox trot popular in the Ballroom community. The Texas two-step, much like the Fox trot, is a progression step around the nightclub floor.
If it's six count it makes more sense to say it 1, 2, 3, hold, 5, hold, that makes easy sense to the brain and to the feet. Lot's of people have difficulty applying the concept of quick quick slow slow,... since aren't the first three steps at the same time in between?: 1, 2, 3, hold, 5, hold, 1, 2, 3, hold, 5, hold. Doing 1,2,3,hold,5,hold, you're directly counting each beat with no vacant pause,... 'hold' takes the vacant spot in quick, quick, slow, slow,... after the two slows of course
Looks not too complicated, but for me as a rookie the hard part is synchronizing the steps between the man and the woman both in timing and the distance.
This is the Two-Step done in the UCWDC...which is basically made up of 100 different weekend-long events around the world (most done in the USA). Each event is a weekend that is filled with Country Dance Competitions and Contests. They compete in 8 different partner dances...and yes, Two-step is the most popular by far. That said, what he showed is the basic movement. If you ever actually watched them dance...it doesn't look like this...becuase they are not basic dancers.
It's important to point out in each & every video that there are ONLY two (2) dance styles done on ANY social Dance Club/Lounge anywhere in the World. Spot/Rhythm & Progressive/Traveling. The congestion Problem (s) we all run into these days is that Dance Instructors do not continually reinforce (Over & Over/ Ad Nauseum ),...... All Spot/Rhythm Dance Styles should be done in the CENTER of the Dance Floor,......Progressive/Traveling Dance Styles are done in the two (2) outside lanes of the Dance Floor. Slower Progressive/Traveling Dancers on the inside Lane & the faster moving dances in the Outside FAST Lane. This way, we can ALL perform our dance of choice at the very same time to each particular Music Selection. Thank You!
where would a little person male put his right hand on the partners back if she is a little taller? im getting into 2 step and was just wondering because that was my first question when i was pulled out on the dance floor.
I'm 5'10" and have danced (and still dance ) with guys who who are 5'5" (and some even shorter). It's still possible to reach your arm to her shoulder blade, unless the leader is 5' and the follower is 6'7". (!)
Not everyone learns the same way. This is mislabeled as Line Dance. It is not. It is Line of Dance like waltz or fox trot. If you want to learn Country or Texas Two Step, try the Michael Thomas video. Not slick but better teaching. Joe Baker also has a very good DVD.
The easy straightforward understanding of 2-step is 1, 2, 3, hold, 5, hold, not quick quick slow slow, that's more confusing, since it's a six count, not a four count, in sync with the music beat. Be simple. one two three hold five hold, it's all there. quick quick slow slow aint all there
I disagree. I can hear the beat. I can't count and think about my feet. I can think about my feet and tell them quick and slow and stay with the beat. I count when I'm doing zumba or a class of some sort, but I don't want to think that much when I'm dancing.
That sounds like the same thing. Based off your description, and starting at count 2, it goes something like 2,3,hold,5,hold,1 or quick, quick, slow (hold, step), slow (hold, step)
...which would mean nothing to people with no interest in or knowledge of Nascar. Clock-wise and counter-clockwise are concepts understood internationally.
That comes with experience. After a while the rhythm pops out at you (waltz, polka, foxtrot, Night Club Two-Step, fast swing, etc.) Also, if a DJ doesn't announce the type of dance/song coming up, a helpful partner asking you do dance will extend a hand and expectantly say something like "Waltz?" or "Night Club?" as an indication of the type of dance you're being invited to join in.
This is not the two-step I grew up with. I am used to traveling sideways. Two steps one way, one step the way you came from, repeat, and let him kind of steer you around the objects.
This is not a traditional two step, this is a modernized dance class two step. The two step is traditionally a diagonal /side to side step. Fast. Fast, slow. I don't know how you would dance the way they teach in this video because two stepping music is three beats. One, two, and three-ee. Add one more fast step to the dance in this video and you've got a west coast swing. Fast fast fast slow slow. This is what I have learned dancing in two stepping bars. Just sayin'.
To be honest the bar dancing is the problem. Many people side step, very few understand line of dance, and even fewer understand a 4/4 count. This is a traditional two step in its most basic and best form. As he said there are regional variations and of course they all think they know "the right way to do it". But if there is any "right way" this is exactly it. Stepping to the side is basically drunk cowboy dancing, dancing backwards and bumping into everyone to impress your gurl is drunk cowboy dancing, pumping your arm up and down to the beat of the music is too, not caring about line of dance is drunk cowboy dancing. There are a hundred ways of doing it wrong and a few to do it right but this video is a failsafe way to do it right.
Ruidoso New Mexico I was at WPS and Quarters two weeks ago and am thoroughly confused. One time I was told that the count was QQS and then later QQSS. Some help on what I should be learning would be appreciated and also maybe some web sites with proper instruction. Thanks.
Robert Kelly Both are correct. There is Two Step (QQS) and there is Country or Texas Two Step (QQSS). You will also find regional variants. Anyone who tells you that such and such a version is "wrong" or "not traditional" has seen only a few forms. None of them is "wrong". They are just different. As you progress as a dancer, you learn other variants and, often, take steps from one to include in another. The Michael Thomas web site teaches a variant different from that taught by Brett Long, for example. In the old videos with Valerie Moss, she is doing a basic step more like polka basic. The Joe Baker video is QQSS and includes nearly 40 steps.
Candace. I had that lesson. They called it Night Club 2 Step. Ruidoso. Also had that lesson. They called it Country 2 Step. Both lessons taught in Ballroom and Bar Floor. Wherever you do it, the Correct way is to keep your eyes open and adjust your steps as needed to avoid colliding with other couples.
Ethan Barton then dance while on your knees, then you won’t be that much taller than her! But people be tripping on your feet... never mind, get a taller partner! Or join a basketball team, give up dancing.
The first music of America was Native American music, followed by religious music made popular by the slaves singing of hymns. The roots of county music lies in Appalachian folk music which is a combination of many influences included African and European (Irish etc). It also borrowed heavily from blues. So, yes, perhaps it is an amalgamation of the diverse music backgrounds of America, but not America’s music. Nice tutorial though.
This is just two step. If you've ever seen Country Swing, now that's beautiful. I love Latin dances, I dance them all the time with my friends. But I've never had my breath taken away like I have when I watched some professionals do Country Swing.
When you do to stop that's not the way you do it you go 1/2 to the right or anywhere you want then you go back which every where you are going then you start all over again and keep on going you can go anyway you want so you need some practice with me come over come over to my house
Yes. There's much more to it -- but that would take about 20 more videos. This is the first, very basic step in the dance. That's how good teaching works: you introduce a little of the basics, review, master, and then add more.

This has to be one of the easiest to understand vids on this. Thanks a lot, and your other two step vids as well.
Guys give them a break, it is a simple two-step for beginners. Flair comes with practice.
They must have never two stepped in Texas. Texas two stepping is way more fun. And better.
I thought the exact same thing...
You didn't have audio when you watched it? He said it was a very basic variation just to get the hang of it. He said there are many other ways to do the dance but this is focused on just the very basic. I think you missed that somehow.
@Creed Brattonafter watching this I found out I'm not much into two steppin' or Texas. Bachata is way more fun. Relax? Ok pooky.
Guy is 5 time dance champion . how many championships have you won Tex

This is how professional dancers do it. I dance Texas two step. I can vary my step to go with the beat and tempo of any two step music.
Going to a country bar this weekend. This will be a lifesaver.
That being said, will I be out of place in black wingtips, dark jeans and a sports coat?
If you had bell bottom jeans, cowgirl boots and a cute top and hat that would work hope you had a good time!
that's his wife, Nicola. they are adorable, and great teachers in person, too. she once did a two-step lesson with her newborn strapped to her chest in a baby carrier =]

Best 2 step video that exists
well in our school dance where was this when I needed my friend and her boyfriend tought me and my boyfriend to do the first dance

Its so damn frustrating, i cant dance in 6/4 time to a 4/4 song. It does not make sence.
Two step is best dance on 4/4 time music... You'd look like a fish out of water dancing on 3/4 time!
+Howcast *Thanks for the confirmation on a style of dance* that's a relative of the Fox trot popular in the Ballroom community. The Texas two-step, much like the Fox trot, is a progression step around the nightclub floor.
Thats not 2 stepping in Texas
Does this also apply if one has 2 left feet ??

I was looking for two step and then to the side. Idk what it’s called lol. It’s ok to wear a full shirt while dancing right?
Very nice. Good demonstration and clear explanation. Thank you.
nice simple video, thanks

Unpleasant memories from middle school go away lmaooo

easy way to explain L.O.D. is nascar racing , i use it all the time

I learned the two step from DJ Unk
THANKS
So the basic is a 6 step. you were stepping on beats 1-2-3-5 skipping 4 and 6.
Jazz is Americas music!
and r&b and rock n roll
This is just the basic step. What you've seen probably has a lot of variations added in.
Some folks the guy has the lady in a head lock (my dad) . I don’t understand why that seems like a good idea.
Is there a how to rednose dance instructions
I see my friends doing it in bars i just sit on the side table and giggles
If you have two legs and two arms there is no excuse not to dance. Even my autistic dad danced.... quite good too
yeah his is hard when you are by yourself
Why did you say it's americas music? Other country's have to too
You are awesome

from the rhythm and tempo. country music has neither, just sit and drink a pitcher of beer.
I wanted to see 2 stepping engine motors but i see a link with a girl in crop top and thats it. I dont see anything else...just drool at her.
This is not the two-step I grew up with. I am used to traveling sideways. Two steps one way, one step the way you came from, repeat, and let him kind of steer you around the objects.
The I'm so great look at me intro was not helpful and the instructions were about the same. But the HOTTY was the best part of this! Wowzers!!
I'm trying to learn how to line dance, but watching videos just,I guess not good enough !
whos here from the git up

that was two step dance?

I didn't learn anything
country is not America's music!! Freedom is America's music !
HA! you wouldn't know freedom if it hit you in the face like a flopping fish...
You did not cover how communication works.
Who’s here trying to learn the Git Up?
wow
She's not wearing her cowgirl boots! 😃
What I was searching how to die in 2 steps and I got this
I can, t do it
This isn't helping me get ready for my Oklahoma performance.
Let's see them do that while together like your slow dancing. I can Texas two step and hold my partner like I'm slow dancing with her.
I want to dance with this chic. She's cute.
I have shes a excellent dancer
What if you're 6'7" and she's not even 5'5"?
Joking joking joking

luv country women
Heres the issue for me my guy is like almost 2 feet taller than me so😂
Im a minis -2
way waaay to much much talking more than half way through before we see what your even talking about. Demo then explain dont explain then demo.
I have a western production so I'm now talking American all the time by accident 0_0
i never know wether to take these seriously or not 💀
It's really sad when you have to teach someone two steps to the right and one step to the left
Uh...that's not the kind of two step this is. Did you watch the video? Quick, quick, slow, slow 2 step.
Mexican couple dancing is better no offence
Salsa es mejor que baile mexicano. y te lo digo yo que soy mexicano y bailo salsa.
dude thats just rude.
heck yeah it is! nortenas, tierra caliente, duranguense, y zapateado es lo mejor!
Andie Quintanilla-Galvan its all based on opinion
This is just two step. If you've ever seen Country Swing, now that's beautiful. I love Latin dances, I dance them all the time with my friends. But I've never had my breath taken away like I have when I watched some professionals do Country Swing.
Looking at my own comment I realise I was out of line I apologize. I don't remember why I said that.
This is certainly not how we do it back in my part of Texas. I'm trying to teach my girlfriend how to do it and this is some northern stuff.
There's nothing behind that blonde's blank stare.
Just watch Urban Cowboy.
When you do to stop that's not the way you do it you go 1/2 to the right or anywhere you want then you go back which every where you are going then you start all over again and keep on going you can go anyway you want so you need some practice with me come over come over to my house
Didn't bother with this hit a club, and get someone who can teach you yo dance to the beat.
The background music ruins it
Yeah this isn't how we two step here.. I'm with MoPar7055
This?? This is dancing? C'mon, there's GOTTA be more to it than that.
Yes. There's much more to it -- but that would take about 20 more videos. This is the first, very basic step in the dance. That's how good teaching works: you introduce a little of the basics, review, master, and then add more.
I have spent months researching into building an iron man suit and found a great website at Dichali Costume Creator (google it if you're interested)
Taylor swift, carry underwood, and brad parsley ain't country singers
I agree with MoPar7055 & awills31540
Give your life to Jesus
Amen brother
THIS ISN'T DANCING.
You’re right that’s just walking😂😂
