Just subscribed, Loved this, it was a real idea what a day of real fishing is like, not an edited, catch a fish what seems like every few min. Lived in Colorado my whole life, never been here, plan to next year, I too catch and release all my trout, I chase after trout for scenery and the beauty of where they live, catching is a bonus, just filling my head with experiences and getting away from life, I been fishing Wyoming last few years to get away from the crowds but looks like this is not crowded, never fished southern Colorado, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching the video and leaving your comment. Sounds like we have a kindred spirit approach to fly fishing. I first laid eyes on the Conejos in 2001 during a regional road trip while attending a conference in Albuquerque but didn't rediscover it until 2008 on a camping/backpacking trip to Colorado. Although I've ventured into other parts of Colorado (and Wyoming in '21), I always visit the Conejos on my summer trips to the west. Too, I have volunteered with the Colorado Trail Foundation since 2006 working in the backcountry on their trail system. In addition to helping build trail, it gives me some good opportunities to check out trout streams all along the Colorado Trail. Cochetopa Creek comes to mind. You may also want to check out my other channel in my name, John Eagerton. Again, thanks for finding Roaming the Rockies.
@@DrJohn493 A lot of that is private land, is this near the reservoir? Do you have GPS coordinates or nearest camp ground? I don't want to fishing on someones property.
@@One2ManyHobbies My regrets and apologies for not replying sooner. I have to do better monitoring this channel. I really don't have any GPS coordinates for public land access to the Conejos but all the private property is well marked along 250. Also there is an abundance of USFS campgrounds and some dispersed campsites from Horca Junction to Platoro on 250.
Thanks Curt for your kind compliment. I try to capture some good footage and I enjoy the editing process. Hard for me to juggle a camera, a rod and a trout so I try to focus on the overall experience.
Thank you very much for your beautiful video. I will be visiting the Conejos in July, I saw the trailhead for the Hidden Mile section, are the other trailheads well identified, I couldn't tell where you were in the second section of the video. Thanks again.
Thanks for watching and dropping a comment/question. The trailheads along Forest Road 250 are well marked and there are plenty of pullouts that are usually posted with some type of signage about fishing regs, etc. Also, most private property along the road is marked or easily recognizable as private property. But there is an abundance of public water and plenty of pullouts to choose from. I typically fish sections of the river from the Hidden Mile section all the way up to Platoro. Also some of the tribs of the Conejos fish well too. Get on the water early to claim your stretch of the river for the morning or day.
Thank you very much for this video. I had the good fortune to fish the Conejos and a couple of tribs this summer. Watching this video flooded back some very good memories.
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching and subbing to the channel. Since 2008, I always spend some time on the Conejos; it's one of my favorite places in Colorado.
Beautiful! I just got into fly fishing in the last year and a half and plan to hit the Conejos in the spring/summer (live in Golden area).. hoping to fish and camp for a few days.. any suggestions for a starting point?
Thanks for checking out the video and leaving a comment/question. Without both of us looking at a map it's hard to pinpoint specific spots. What I would suggest is starting at the Hidden Mile segment, driving along FSR 250 and looking for the pullouts and parking areas on public property. There is some private property scattered along the road up to Platoro but it's fairly well marked. Any of the public waters below the Pinnacles is easily accessible and produces some nice trout. I really like the section of river that's accessed at the South Fork trail head. The canyon section in the Pinnacles area is good but difficult to access. There are some good Forest Service campgrounds and some really nice dispersed camping areas that provide a base camp to work from. Check out the book, Fly Fishing Southern Colorado (2nd ed.), by Martin, Knopick and Flick for a really good description of fly fishing the Conejos. Good luck and have fun!
Looks like the Conejos produced well for you guys & what amazing scenery. Were you catching those on the flies you hand tied? I know you’ve told me before that you are a catch & release guy, but do you ever keep some to eat while you are camping?
Thanks for watching and commenting Taylor! I caught a few on some of the flies I tied up before my trip out. I'm still releasing and haven't put any I caught in the pan yet. If I were to land one that had been deeply hooked in the throat or gullet and probably wouldn't survive, then I'd put it in the pan. That hasn't happened yet and I use either barbless hooks or ones that the barb has been crimped down.
Great vid. Nice sound track. Just returned from the fishing Elk creek meadows, a stones throw from the Conejos and Los Pinos meadows just north. Alot of big browns wandering those waters...eager to take a decent presentation....
Very pretty video... Please stop naming rivers. Big, small, medium, front country or backcountry, the interweb, and well-meaning content producers name rivers that are fragile and before you know it, the pressure, crowds, and degradation begin to show - interweb naming (searchable terms) of beautiful, remote places contribute to "loving things to death" and that is where we are heading.... my favorite back-country creek has gone from a treat to fish to hammered (few and spooky fish, scarred faces from hook and release, and crowded) - something I wished you would think about.... Next gen should have something beautiful to discover without the use of interweb crutches. Thank you.
Your about 10-15 years late in your ask; the cat's been out of the bag on the Conejos for years and years. I don't feel I owe you an explanation, let alone an apology, but I will explain my thinking for you and any others that may fall into the "don't tell" crowd. If a stream is well known and popular, I'll name it because the secret is already out. For the less well known streams, the hidden gems, I don't even video those locations let alone put it on UA-cam. Hope that makes you feel better.
Not asking for an apology - just a thought to the fish and the future experience of future anglers - promoting self-discovery is the best. I appreciate you keeping the camera off on the small creeks, I get the fact that the bigger rivers are "discovered" ) largely thanks to UA-cam), but I think that fishing and naming on searchable internet platforms should be discouraged... most other folks (youtube content providers/viewers) don't discern between big and small waters/fisheries - they are just seeing it as a new-normal to name and include searchable keywords - like I said I am watching fisheries of all kinds in the mountains near me degenerate and the quality of the experience (even on the big rivers) is going down the toilet. Sorry to be doom and gloom, but it's the dark side of this stuff, and its happening. I think that you and others are in the driver's seat - you can have a positive impact on the future if you set the norm in your content. thanks @@DrJohn493
@@whitefishfins To circle back on this conversation, I truly understand your points. As a flatlander from the southeast that enjoys the western Rockies, I have this feeling that I'm one of the last generation that will get to enjoy the full range of experiences that the Colorado Rockies has to offer. Put that together with some other opinions I value, I plan to stop naming stream names and specific locations where the fly fishing is "hot."
@@DrJohn493 wow... I appreciate you considering this, and making a change. First time watcher but not subd yet. The reason,? I cant understand a word you say. I am nerve deaf. If you would kindly turn on the closed caption in your videos I will like and sub. Deal? Thanks.
I will be certainly glad to do that, as soon as I find the right setting or button. My apologies for not doing it sooner...I mistakenly thought YT just automatically did that. Thanks for calling it to my attention and thanks for watching!
I've navigated to the YT channel settings for both my channels and all the closed caption boxes are checked. When I'm watching a YT video, I sometimes have to cut on or off the closed captioning, depending on how well I can hear the narrative audio. On the bottom of the screen there is a "CC" button that can be turned on or off. Have you checked that button to see if it is turned on? Not trying to be snarky, just trying to troubleshoot the issue.
@@1Troutguy I try to be a bit careful identifying a trout stream. If it's been "discovered," I'll name it. If I stumble onto one that I've read little or nothing about, I'll be a bit more discrete.
@@1Troutguy Totally understandable! I had the Colorado fly fishing friend of mine in this video mark some bluelines on a map that will probably never show up in or be revealed in a video.

A treasured place. What a shame Colorado doesn’t do a better job of limiting cattle activity on the river. Wyoming seems to do that well.
So amazing. That’s why we fly fish.
