Loved this video report on the Conejos, especially since I didn't make it out to Colorado this summer. The Conejos is my first stop for a few days of fly fishing before seeking out other streams. Saw some familiar spots! Thanks for the virtual visit.
You bet! Definitely one of my favorite streams to visit. Always put a few familiar waters on the agenda when I'm exploring new waters, jic things go south!
WOW! This place seems to be home to some nice sized and healthy looking fish. A few days ago was the first time I caught a trout on my fly rod. Felt good although it was a hatchery fish. I wish there were more open waters and less abused streams and creeks where I live. I fish the ''delayed harvest'' section of my stream which is also artificial lures only. I caught some lady down there the other day using worms and taking fish which you can't harvest until after June 20th.
Definitely a healthy stream. The first trout I ever caught was a stocker and the hardest to catch! We all start someplace. Unfortunately, that happens all over. Sometimes it's intentional, some ignorance. What I've done in the past is politely mention the regulations. Say something like...You're probably not aware of the regulations...but this is a....stream. I'd hate to see you get a ticket for not knowing.
Always enjoy your vids from my favorite water. I normally go out right after the 4th of July. #10 green or gray drake can be killer for a couple of hours after the sun clears the mountains in the mornings. I fished from 8am till noon one day this summer with nothing but the drake and it was non stop.
I just got back from conejos and it was running pretty fast and brutal ,I wanna go back but prolly in late season I skunked out but I had an amazing time and can't wait to go back , thanks for the amazing videos
That's on the other Side of the sangre de cristos from me. .you did a great job on this solo! That and cheesman are my fav place here in colorado... I love your style...no music, yelling just solid c&r angling... an anomaly...keep it up!
Crazy where fish will hold. A small rock in a fast run can sometimes produce! Definitely not what I consider prime but since they are sometimes over looked, might hold some surprises!
I had a run in with a prick game warden in Ca. after fishing the Sierras for over 50 years without incident. After that little encounter I decided to try fishing out of state and I haven’t looked back. My trips are 2-3 weeks long and start in March in Oregon/Idaho and my final 2-3 week trips ends in late October usually in the Jackson/Pinedale areas. I have never looked back and after missing out last season because of Covid I can’t wait for the March Skwala somewhere in Oregon. Thanks for the vid, the Cornejos never disappoints.
Hi Drew, I'm headed to Montana this summer (2022) to do the same thing you do for about 2 months. Questions: 1. Footwear. I saw your video on Wrangler pants - cool. What do you wear on your feet when hiking to a stream? Do you change to different shoes when you get to the water? Same for returning: do you hike 3+ miles in wet shoes or change? Your ability to cast into tiny streams is miraculous. Go Drew!
Great series! I’ll be in SoCo next week while I’m waiting for our New Mexico waters to cool down. I usually fish some of the Rocky Mtn Angler leases on the Conejos. Is FR250 up to the dispersed camping good enough to tow a trailer? Thanks and safe travels. When you’re heading home, and close to Bernalillo NM, hit me up. I’ll buy the first round.
Hi Drew, this series has been spectacular ! Throughout this video it appeared that you were using an indicator, rather than a dry fly, with a single nymph. Is this correct ? In this type of fast water, were you using a weighted fly as your droppr? Thanks much , pls keep up the great work.
Yea sucks when that happens...conejos river anglers post the stream flow...so you can check it out first. Where I go to check the levels before driving 17hrs!
The one I mention in the video is the only option I'm aware of on the river. Best option is to check the forest service website and find where you can't...pretty much free to disperse camp in most places with a few restrictions! I don't have any specific areas...just drive till I see a spot and stop.
Drew LooknFishy yea I googled the area you had mentioned and couldn’t really find it. I’ve made some of these 7-15 hour drives before and gotten burned pretty bad just exploring. Looking at a map it looks like there’s a few roads that go near the conejos. Love your videos. Been all up and down the Rockies fly fishing. (I also had a titan up until about 2 weeks ago when my transmission blew up in wind river Wyoming lol)
Trail and error until u find where the fish are holding. I start by trying to get my nymphs at the bottom, so I guess the depth then add some to that...1.5x the depth is a good place to start. So...2ft deep, try 3 ft to the indi. Then I add shot until I drag bottom then I start making adjustments...add/sub shot or move the indi until u find fish. The flow, clarity and pressure on the fish also factor in but this is a good place to start.
@@LooknFishy one man does not only live on beer, sometimes he chooses gin, others whiskey, bourbon, even sometimes Will have what ever every one else is having in order to have a party ...... can be the same with rods and reels, just not making yourself out of the party ... does it sound well to you ?
Haha, not my intention. I'm an open book but definitely forget to mention them sometimes. I have done better in my latest vids from wyoming. But happy to answer any questions and will add some tying vids this winter!
Another video with zero info, just another guy fishing. Boring. What time of year. Whats the hatch. Whats the temp. Where the heck is the river. Thanks for nothing.
Guess you haven't seen my tip videos...you should check them out if you're looking for tips/techniques...got one on indicators and one on nymphing. The ones you seem to be unhappy with are destination vids, showing the areas and places I like to travel to, lol! Cheers!
@@LooknFishy Always willing to listen/read tips but, I do ok. Have been at it for a long time. As to indicators...why not call 'em bobbers ? Those little red and white things kids use with worms. Don't use 'em. True indicator is the feel you get with the take or using a dry with a nymph below and watch the dry move. Fuzzy indicators are used by guides to make sure their sports catch fish. Other than that they are useless. I do appreciate your posting videos. Nicely done..BUT...some info would be nice. Tite Lines..
Sadly, it sounds like u gotta all figured out. Honestly, it's just fishing...as long as you're having fun...do it how you like...bait, bobbers, conventional...just have fun!

I wasn't aware that there are that many fish in rapid streams. Beauties in that water

Lovin these videos. Great find! After fishing in CO and WY it’s hard fishing in CA. It’s so overfished!
Yea, every other place is hard after those 2. But someone's gotta do it lol!

Lovin it Drew man!
Thanks bro!
Nice catches

Good one! Nice stream
For sure, thx dudes!
That was a great video. Beautiful day and beautiful fish. Does it get any better?
Not sure it does!
Heading in tomorrow for a few day camp and stalk

There's a vid right after the wrangler video talking about my favorite boots and what I do!
They are not shy those fish, are they? Great sport!
They know I'm going to release them lol!
Beauty, is the Conejos still holding up that well?
This last spring kind of sucked, but late summer and fall was ammmmmmmmmmaaaazing!
Very quick hook set! The man has skills! See any other anglers?
Only place I saw any and it was crowded for me, decided to back up a day early and head to another stream.
Drew LooknFishy Do you mainly trout fish in southern Colorado due to vicinity to Arkansas?
@@williamwojcieszek4320 no, mostly the remoteness. I've fished NOCO also just didn't make a video...but will next trip!
Looks awesome! Sweet video. Heading to fish the conejos next week. Any advice for this time of the year?
Have a plan b...gonna be low and warm. Not the best time to head there....but closer to the dam the better

It is, but it'll be rough. Will do!
Curious about how deep is the water is where you are nymphing, looks fairly shallow. Nice video!
Probably in the 2- 3' range with some isolated deep holes in random places. Appreciate it!
This area is a trout fishermens dream. Ive got to try this river. Thanks
Definitely a great area!
Ever thought of eatin one of those bad boys..i see you throwin em back..
Some nice catches. Do you ever fish the Animas river?
Never have but have considered it many times. Definitely need to.
Looking to try and fish out here pretty soon. Any recommended spots or tips?
Nice video, and great fish! What other favorite places to fish in CO do you have?

Drew,
Can you share what indicator you're using?
Awesome video. How much tippet do you usually run from your dry to your nymph?
~2.5 feet or so but I'll go less or more if needed!
Is this river usually fishable by the end of June? Hopefully traveling out to CO next June for business and want to fish after for a few days.
Really depends on run off...last yr not even in July. It was this year!
@@LooknFishy yeah, I got hosed last year. Tried the North Platte and it was blown out

Great video. I’m new to fly fishing. What were you using?
Varied so much hard to say one fly was more productive but mayflies were on the plan!
Where’s some good dispersed camping areas around the conejos? I may make a trip that way next week and would like some suggestions.

No, wasn't in that area.
How do you know what height you want your indicator at

gotta love 4 weights
Between the 4 and the 3, pretty much got everything covered. So why do I have so many others lol!

although I got only even numbers just to have some límit, but in #4 you can have more than one length
Yep, I'm looking my current version is 10' and I thinking I'd like a shorter for heavy closed in water!
On the hunt for big Bobby brown
So what was the hot fly?
Anything that looked like a mayfly or caddis!
Looks like streamer water.
