The problem is that there is no good explanation for why normal curse words are bad outside of "because I said so". The whole "they mean I want to hurt your feelings" explanation falls flat for so many reasons. The word f-ck by itself just means having sex. Now someone can say that someone is a f-ing idiot, but they can also say someone is f-ing awesome. Both use the same curse word, but one is an insult and the other is a compliment. There's also swearing when you get hurt or something like that, which is usually directed at no one. (Note: UA-cam made me censor this comment even though I wasn't insulting anyone.)
@@TheMellowFilmmaker So true. As an adult now, I completely understand my parents' perspective. Swearing is only bad because we say it's bad. I don't feel any more hurt when someone calls me a f-ing idiot than if they just called me an idiot.

I work at a news station, can confirm that not live shows just have the edited beep, but for those small 10% times, there is someone that actually has to press the bleep button. For mostly callers if they're having that kind of segment, as well as a 30 second delay so you can get the bleep in correctly. Or when a news anchor lets one slip. Can be fined by the FCC if a big one escapes.
I think the initial bleep explanation scene they did before the episode actually started was a legal loop hole so that they could imply cursing while asserting that, canonically, the characters aren't actually swearing. So they can still sell the show as not containing any depictions of characters swearing. The point wasn't to teach kids about how bleeps work, it was to sidestep the spirit of the law or some company policy while still technically adhering to it. That's my best guess, anyway.
@@TimTime10well to be fair, we as an audience had no idea that the characters (or their voice actors) were actually swearing until Tom Kenny brought it to light at that convention. I think the best part about that story is that it implies that yes, Nickelodeon held onto the uncensored audio recording for archival purposes, and no, it'll likely never see the light of day 😂
Ironically, that basketball exercise with PBG holding out a ball in front of him is an actual exercise my physical therapist had me do to strengthen my nerve-damaged arms. But my therapist didn’t call it the “Bahsehtball holl”, which is known to be the exercise’s scientific name.
That Bleep episode taught me that some parents have VERY different approaches to swear words. I remember when I was like 7 my parents would blast their uncensored Lil Wayne CDs in the car lmao
Well I heard one youtuber say it was the f word used for gay people, and looking at the way the lips of the characters moved, I think he might be right.
So, if Arthur looking pretty much the same as always is husky, what does that make Binky? How does he even find clothing if Arthur with a bit more weight is simply too much?
oh hell, I remember Arthur Weighs In. Not the weird fantasy segments tho, the part where he's shamed by a retail worker. That genuinely contributed to my body insecurity as a child.
It’s rare that Arthur being the show it is has characters who are just genuine assholes if the chance presents itself. This tailor did as much damage to Arthur than his own weight and health habits did. I also think of the landlord of Francine’s apartment in Feeling Flush, he was a massive asshole berating Francine for things she can’t help and refusing to consider changes she suggests out of spite.
@@Depth217 To be fair, landlords have a terrible reputation which is constantly being contributed to by terrible, entitled, irredeemable landlords. They probably took inspiration from that utter cesspool.
One time I was looking after my step dad’s niece and she wanted to watch TV so I put on Arthur for her. The episode that came on that day was the bleep episode and I had never heard of that one before, so it caught me so off guard. Seeing Arthur talk about “The Altos” while the characters on the set are just cursing up a storm was too funny to me.
I'm surprised you didn't cover the one where the Brain became a jokester simply because the Brain, a 10-year old, drew a noose and tried to make a joke out of it. The rest of the episode was normal, but that moment was out of nowhere dark.
especially considering the fact that he was voiced by Steven Crowder who's a well-known nazi bigot, making that noose joke even darker(especially as Crowder used the fact that he voiced The Brain as an excuse to say the N-word in high school)as nooses are generally associated with hate crimes towards black people
The funny thing about The Altos scene is that they chose a show that DOESN'T bleep its swear words. It did air on HBO, after all. I like how they did Arthur-ized versions of Tony, Silvio, and Paulie. Woke up this morning and I said, "Hey! What a wonderful kind of day!"
The editing in this video is even more chaotic than usual and I love it. Also PBG, first rule of the internet...never google image a character from a franchise.
I specifically remember one morning when I was home-schooled and would watch Arthur episodes before doing starting my work for the day, and the Bleep episode came on, and my Mom came in to confirm I was still watching Arthur during the intro sequence of the episode, and then continued what she was doing after confirming it
I remember seeing both of these episodes growing up! The Bleep episode seemed strange to me, but I don't think it's a bad idea for an episode. It's just handled weird. Kids are gonna learn about swear words eventually, so having some way to teach them about it might help encourage them to not use them as much. That's actually what my mom did for me. She taught me what a bunch of the most common curse words were and what they meant to get the curiosity out of the way. And it actually worked! I really didn't swear when I was a kid. But there was this one time that in the 1st or 2nd grade that my mom told me about where I called a kid a jerk on the bus and the school was gonna suspend me. My mom stormed into the building and told them that first off, that kid I called a jerk beat me up, and second that I knew WAY worse than that and calling him a "jerk" was actually being pretty light. Suffice to say they dropped it pretty damn quickly.
maybe thats why i enjoyed the show so much.. its not like i related to him (i dont think..?) but it just felt so real. a lot of people in my real life acted like that, it made it feel like a better version of real life
There's other things from arthur that surprised people let alone sometimes sensitive, like the April 9th episode a 2002 episode it's basically a 9/11 but more kid friendly and the lunch lady having cancer but got cut off the air because of a reference to Lance Armstrong
Man, the fat episode is how eating disorders start. It should have affirmed that a little bit of pudge is perfectly fine so long as you have a varied and healthy diet and stay active. Instead, it just says that any excess weight is bad and that you aren't normal for having it.
It’s a little TOO realistic; everyone will judge/moralize your eating and scrutinize you at all times (and feeling entitled to “help”), the “formerly fat” person being super fatphobic… D+ for at least dissing diets, I guess. But the whole premise being that everyone in Arthur’s life suddenly becomes hyper focused on and involved in his “health” is really shitty (albeit, sadly, realistic). It’s never easy dealing with this stuff, but 2005-ish (when this came out) was around the “Supersize Me”-reactionary era, and I feel so bad for any kids watching this that ended up feeling like shit about themselves.
I don't want to be rude, but what's wrong with dieting? I know there are a lot of terrible fad diets and a whole diet industry dedicated to keeping people running in circles and wasting their hard earned money, but isn't healthy eating and mitigating portion sizes still generally good? Also, I forgot how influential Supersize Me was. I knew for years it was a manipulatively edited piece of trash, but I often forget how important people thought it was.
considering this show is mostly for western audiences, nah that ain't it chief, there is no reason to have a lil extra pudge and if you do it quickly can spiral out of control with the garbage food that is sold here. I think it would have been better if they drew him heavier so it doesn't come across as like "model fat" but yeah no, no one here kids or adults need to be told it's okay to be fat cause that's how we've ended up in the place we're at with obesity rates. how about we demand the government to stop approving these horribly fattening foods, such as bread that would be considered cake in most parts of the world instead of accepting being fat?
@@DaWoWzerpeople who get this enraged over fat people existing need to be studied under a microscope fr. like why is someone else's body/diet so offensive to you personally? why don't any of these people also concern troll over drinking or smoking or any other of the myriad of unhealthy lifestyle choices a person can make? i've never looked at the comments on a picture of someone at a bar and seen people flocking to tell them "you're LITERALLY promoting a lifestyle that's K1LL1NG you!!!🤬😭🥺" the way they do with fat people.
@@DaWoWzerAgain, that is how eating disorders start. Weight is not an indication of health and health is not an indication of worth. Having a "little bit of fat" is fine. It depends on the body type. And fatness can be genetic, meaning dieting doesn't touch it. I'm 5'4" and 120 pounds. That is SKINNY. But I'm having trouble with belly fat as I get older and it's changing how I eat, but I'm not eating enough. I'm predisposed to addiction and an eating disorder isn't off the table. That's scary to me. And it's also scary that someone out there thinks my "little bit of fat" is not okay. That I'm on a bad path. Now if you feel like backpedaling to say that that's not the kind of "fat" you meant, then you have a very specific body type in mind and actually believe that fatness is a spectrum. It's a good start but you need to understand how eating disorders hurt people and how the way someone eats doesn't always help or hurt someone's ideal physique. People have to resort to invasive surgeries to get rid of weight which is not what anyone should have to go through. And people who lose tons of weight at once can always gain it back. Like I said, a lot of the time it's genetic. I've seen too many fat people who don't eat enough and still get ridiculed. Additionally, when I was in high school, I was severely underweight. But someone like you would have praised me for it. At that point it's not even about health anymore. You don't care about someone's health. You care about strangers being conventionally attractive to you, whether they're healthy or not. TLDR; educate yourself on fatness. And on that "o" word you used to refer to fat people. It's 2023.
This actually makes me relieved, I thought I was the only person who ever watched or remembered the episode where all the kids were swearing so much 😂 still makes me laugh to this day
To be fair, that's an accurate representation of kids learning a new word, especially one that has an unusual effect on adults around them. The reactions would indeed be a) immediately finding the word fun to say, b) desperate curiosity about the word or c) downright fear of adults ever learning the word escaped their mouths due to some unclear yet terrifying imaginary consequences.
@@ewormXD Option C is why I'm confused about the episode being banned. DW shows a lot of foresight and restraint she tends to not have in other episodes....
I think Arthur telling the audience that 'bleeps' are hiding periods of silence while the actors pretend to swear is to absolve DW of actually swearing in the minds of the children watching. "Don't worry, DW is just pretending to swear for the story!"
Tiny Toon Adventures literally did this first before anyone else did, with a character that was actually called "Foulmouth". Though he only actually swore in his first appearance. They replaced it with G-rated replacements in all future episodes. But in Foulmouth's first appearance, the lesson was that Foulmouth says so many bleeped out swear words that it upset everyone else and made them sick.
I feel like SpongeBob "Sailor Mouth" is probably the most popular kids show episode about swearing not only because of it being SpongeBob because that cartoon alone is more famous than the other ones but the funniest and the most talked about. Sure, Dexter's Lab "Rude Removal" has its fans
The only "controversial" episode I was aware of before watching this was the episode Mr Ratburn gets married, which was banned in the state of Alabama. Resulted in it being the most watched episode, at least of the later seasons
There was also the one of Buster visiting a real life lesbian couple that made the rounds on the news with parents being upset about it promoting that kind of lifestyle to kids.
Hilarious how the state that was most offended by a man marrying another man is the one state where 80% of the adult population are married to their own siblings and cousins.
@@CommodoreFan64 Which is admittedly funny, because especially with the rise of the internet, doing stuff like that would probably bring more attention to things that most kids probably wouldn't even notice
I saw the episode about swearing when I was seven or eight, and I didn't realise the bleep was meant to censor the word. I tried so hard to figure out how I could replicate the sound effect so I could make sure my friend knew it was a bad word because I didn't want her to say it by accident.
1st idiot here, I thought the exact same thing. For some reason, I didn't realize that the beeping sound was supposed to be a censor, and the thing is, I knew about a couple of curse words (I never said them, of course), but I didn't realize the beeping was supposed to censor the word. I just thought it was a weird type of sound that insults people, for some strange reason XD
It’s actually fairly common for kids shows to have a “swearing is bad” episode. Some of my personal favorites being in the Berenstain Bears and another on Franklin. Instead of using a censored curse word both shows used real words that kids could realistically say or hear (“fuzzball” for BB and “stupid” for Franklin), and did a pretty good job of explaining why it might be bad.
Yeah and Baby Looney Tunes did it as well. And I think it even was in a similar way in which Arthur did, with a duck noise instead of the beep. Now guess which of the characters cursed in the episide.
I didn't really watch Arthur that much, but i knew about the swearing episode. It strikes me as odd that they didn't really explain it that well by just saying "It's bad". You wouldn't, and probably shouldn't, need to expain what they mean, but simply saying "You can't do that because it's bad" isn't going to get them to understand WHY it's wrong
I know this a bit of a leap in terms of severity, but it kinda makes me think of parents who raise their kids off of fear, not doing certain things just because they know that if they do, they'll be punished for it, regardless of why that is, being raised not to question why things are the way they are, but still doing so because...well, that's human nature- This is how you create trust issues, just have a bit of faith in your kid's ability to understand basic concepts!
Funny enough, it also makes me think of a movie that I think...Drew Gooden had in a video, maybe? And all throughout it, this girl was trying to figure out geometry or something, and was failing her math class because of it, but when faced with this, pretty much all the adults in her life (including her tutor) were just like "how do you not understand? It's so simple!", refused to elaborate, and are surprised when she continued to get bad grades!
@@damienearl8302it was definitely in a drew gooden video. As someone who is neurodivergent it was uncomfortable to watch for sure. There is admittedly one thought I have about the "Bleep" episode; Has there been any official confirmation from any of the series staff to what was the swear D.W. heard from that one guy? In full context it's left ambiguous for the minds of the older audience, though when the dog guy says it, the lip-sync appears to have two syllables. Like possibly it could be "fucker"? The sentences that the bleep is inserted in makes it seem as those they're using that word and/or variations thereof, but it seems more like a general Smurf vocabulary than a proper use of the word (though that is a realistic expectancy when someone mis-uses a word they've never heard of before. Heck, for a while I thought "livid" was a thesaurus word for excited/happy)
Pretty sure it’s not fuck, but the other F-word. That’s the only two-syllable word I can think of that would cause that reaction and kinda matches up with the mouth movements.
I got curious and looked it up one day and one of the theories I thought worked was the B word. But now I think the f-slur is probably more likely. Neither word really fits in some of the later scenes, but honestly I feel like they didn't intend for the word to be a real swear at all, but rather a stand-in for _all_ swear words.
Both these episodes show how Arthur's writers managed to skirt the line of being too real for TV and that's one of the things that made the series so great.
Right? Like, they're just words. They're a means of emphasis or description. "Fagot" and the N word, now that I understand because they hold historical pain. But fuck, shit, damn, hell, cunt, those are just words. People are weird.

I remember reading that in the swearing episode, they had the kids say the word "chicken" instead of any bad words and just bleeped that out. If that's true, I'd love to hear an unbleeped version of the episode.
Kids swearing in TV shows is just always hilarious to me. That "Bleep" episode reminds of a banned Dexter's Lab cartoon where evil versions of Dexter and Dee Dee swear throughout the episode.

It wasn’t until I saw the uncensored version on UA-cam did I finally realise what the opening was actually like So yeah, the episode was censored in an awkward way rather than being banned for me

I know it's reversed, but I like that we see one kid with a leg cast and then a shot of someone with a cast on the OTHER leg, implying MULTIPLE children in this classroom BROKE THEIR LEGS by exercising!!!

I really hope you don’t get copyright stricken for this, because you clearly put a ton of effort into this, and it’s hilarious as _bleep._ I loved every second!
I think the exercise episode would have been better split into two separate stories because both body image and exercise are important topics to discuss. The issue is that the way it's presenting them together reinforces body issues and is quite honestly something anyone with weight issues has already heard numerous times or will hear numerous times. Just exercise, just diet. Weight is more complicated than we often give credit and so many people do diet and exercise and just don't see the result they want; which can turn into unhealthy practices or just discourage you from doing either when there's way more important benefits connected to exercise and your diet than calories. An episode on being comfortable with your body is a really important message and even touching on dysmorphia, in an age appropriate way, is really valuable. You have to live with the body you have and while there's some ability to change it being comfortable with it at all the stages is important even if you want to pursue changing it. The live-action segment at the end and Ratburn's own experience with ping-pong are really good directions for an exercise episode. I do think we sometimes focus too much on archetypical exercises like running or weight lifting that if we don't resonate with them we feel discouraged from being active at all. Being active is some way, even if it's not the optimal way or a bit unconventional is often better than doing nothing at all. Gym exercises aren't for everyone. They're a great option for some people. Absolutely we should try giving them a chance if we can. They're just not everything.

As someone who watched the episode through scattered UA-cam recordings and YTPs, it's very interesting.
Of course. And in doing so, they made a generation of kids like myself believe that there was some guy censoring actors in real time on TV shows
Wait what about that spongebob episode?
@@TimTime10well to be fair, we as an audience had no idea that the characters (or their voice actors) were actually swearing until Tom Kenny brought it to light at that convention. I think the best part about that story is that it implies that yes, Nickelodeon held onto the uncensored audio recording for archival purposes, and no, it'll likely never see the light of day 😂
What about the later scene of all the kids cursing? Maybe they were allowed to do that as an indication that the kids were immature or something.
Ironically, that basketball exercise with PBG holding out a ball in front of him is an actual exercise my physical therapist had me do to strengthen my nerve-damaged arms.
But my therapist didn’t call it the “Bahsehtball holl”, which is known to be the exercise’s scientific name.

As much as Arthur taught us how to act as kids, it now teaches us as adults how not to act as parents
I specifically remember one morning when I was home-schooled and would watch Arthur episodes before doing starting my work for the day, and the Bleep episode came on, and my Mom came in to confirm I was still watching Arthur during the intro sequence of the episode, and then continued what she was doing after confirming it
I’ve had that happen at least a couple of times with other shows.

They redid the lunch lady episode a few years later with a fictional wrestler replacing Lance Armstrong
It's 2023.
I refuse to call it a coincidence that adult Arthur looks like you. PBS definitely knows what you've been up to.

Option C is why I'm confused about the episode being banned.

Actually, episodes about swearing in kids shows isn't uncommon.
There's also:
SpongeBob SquarePants - "Sailor Mouth"
Dexter's Laboratory - "Rude Removal [BANNED]"
The Loud House - "Potty Mouth"
Don't forget that one episode of Rugrats too! 😆
The sailor mouth episode was hilarious.
Rude removal is interesting because you can actually tell what they are saying, no wonder it was banned haha
Its funny how they banned that episode and its so mid the wedding itself is also boring. Banned a mid episode over being scared of the homiesexuals
There was also the one of Buster visiting a real life lesbian couple that made the rounds on the news with parents being upset about it promoting that kind of lifestyle to kids.
@@CommodoreFan64 time to watch that episode!
Ya know, I thought the same thing but about the SpongeBob episode 😅
1st idiot here, I thought the exact same thing. For some reason, I didn't realize that the beeping sound was supposed to be a censor, and the thing is, I knew about a couple of curse words (I never said them, of course), but I didn't realize the beeping was supposed to censor the word. I just thought it was a weird type of sound that insults people, for some strange reason XD
We need more Arthur plushie skits, or just plushie skits in general. Somehow they mesh perfectly with Peebs' style of humor.
Now guess which of the characters cursed in the episide.
spongebob did it too. granted spongebob isn't an educational television show.
And let’s not forget Dinosaurs with “smoo”.
PBG can’t fail to make me laugh
It’s impossible!

I know this a bit of a leap in terms of severity, but it kinda makes me think of parents who raise their kids off of fear, not doing certain things just because they know that if they do, they'll be punished for it, regardless of why that is, being raised not to question why things are the way they are, but still doing so because...well, that's human nature-
This is how you create trust issues, just have a bit of faith in your kid's ability to understand basic concepts!
I think that same video also featured a movie where parents were forbidden by law from disciplining their children and Santa has to stop it. I’m pretty sure 17:50 is one of the funniest jokes on the entire channel, that (beep) was gold
It could be the F word which is a slur towards gay people, it would certainly cause that kind of reaction.
I always thought he was saying "fuck you" because of the context of the scene myself.
Scott Cramer has an interesting video trying to figure out which word it is!

I am aware of this because I also thought that counted as exercise when I was a child
Looks like the spine breaker.
The song was not only a parody of the Arthur music episode but the lyrics were perfection. And yes I always hated the explanation the mom gives for curse words. It doesn’t help at all.
Nothing like a peanut butter Gamer video to make a day better
You can say that again
4:17 Factor has gotten the "Peebs' father" stamp of approval
If there's two things I can always count on, it's pbg to put out Arthur and Zelda content
Arthur punching D.W. is the best anime battle
Very satisfying
Ik right
Arthur is not anime and yes I know about the meme.
I told you
Not
To
touch it
I really hope you don’t get copyright stricken for this, because you clearly put a ton of effort into this, and it’s hilarious as _bleep._ I loved every second!
"We don't hit in this household". 18:54
D.W making half life one scientist screams😂 4:56
Yes 🤣! Is perfect
15:05
YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE THAT, D.W. YOU WILL SUFFER, NO, THE ENTIRE WORLD WILL SUFFER BECAUSE YOU SAID THE WORD **BLEEEEEEEEEEP!**
7:39 As Goku once said:
*_"YOU FOOL!!!"_*
12:42
Wow! Arthur got away with that!
Gotta love it when PBG uploads!
I felt very called out watching the first half while eating from a party sized bag of doritos (In my defense, it was already half empty)
