There's something really satisfying about this. Nice one G
Thanks pal
Glad you are able to do some other kinds of videos while you heal- and yes- you should also do mudlarking once you can stand and walk around for hours on end.
definitly id love to try
Nice one mate. It’s so satisfying getting something for nothing that gruby and dirty and turn it back around to what it’s ment for. Good job bud👍🏽😊
Thanks and i love finding tools
Andrew L i think it’s called satisfaction mate. Recycling. As you can see we live in a throwaway society.
Bloody hell Gaz, it’s now science with Drasicg. Good stuff buddy
Ha ha cheers pal
That's just great. Thanks, mate.

Thanks for this, Gareth. Have just gotten into magnet fishing here in Tasmania and have spent hours watching your videos lately. Been wanting an easy to follow tutorial on electrolysis for a while now and had all but forgotten about it until this magnet fishing hobby found me! This is just what I've been waiting for, so much appreciated mate!
Have even got an old computer sitting gathering dust so I'm going to check out your other channel right now!
Many thanks mate and all the best for your future fishing trips!

They are coming very soon im doing them as we speak
This is great.
Ive got an old pistol with some rust on it and I dont want to shoot it until I clean it up.
sweet good luck
You can use a phone charger as well. Or and outlet plug. Best bet is use one from an electronic store with adjustable voltage. “ 9v is perfect for our Australian pre decimal coins that are coroded” I use mine for coins that i get with my detector. Its good for silver and copper coins. Iodized salt, stainless steel sacrficial, and boiling water. Well ventalated area of course. 👌🏻
cheers for the tips mate
Sweet, keep at it Drastic.
Thanks i will
more videos like this please too drastic, amazing stuff mate nice one
more are on there way
YES!! This is the video I have been waiting for. All we need now is to see the new PSU for the Electromagnet. :D Hope your recovery is going well.
Im just waiti g on parts mate then i will fire it up and im good thanks
Nice one Gareth. I’m a metallurgist of over 30 years in research & development. If you ever have any issues or questions regarding metals, especially steels give me a shout and I’ll do my best to help pal 👍🏻
ive got a strange one, i was grinding a chisel and no sparks came from it and a red colour dust came off it, but it had rust on so surely not brass or copper
drasticg if it’s a chisel G it will be made of hardened tool steel. There would have been sparks there but probably less than you’d expect, not the usual bright yellow and they’d probably be partially hidden by all the rust / grinder dust coming off at the same time 👍🏻
Not something I’ve ever done but it’s possible to get an idea of the basic composition of a steel by observing the colour etc of the sparks when ground
cheers pal
drasticg no worries pal 👍🏻
Very cool
cheers buddy
A good informative video Gareth..😎👍
Thanks
This is my go-to method. It works well and quickly. 🙂👍🏻👍🏻
I love it, bit slow but its good
drasticg What I love about it is it gets the rust in places you cannot otherwise reach.
👍🏻
@@IanYGath exactly and what do you use as the electrolyte
drasticg Baking soda. It seems to work quite well. 👍🏻
cheers for the heads up mate
Top class channel👍
Thanks
I am into restoration of historic objects too. A good tip here is to also use Kettle de-scaler to soak the objects in before electrolysis. You can buy de-scaler in liquid form, or as crystals, it is an Alkali (Formic Acid), this gives of very strong fumes, so must be used with a mask and good ventilation, adding salt makes it stronger. This mixture used together with electricity and hot water, will be very effective on all metals as well as ferrous, though beware it will dissolve copper.
Thankyou so much for that tip 🤓
@@drasticg Sorry, I don't know why I called it an alkali, when it clearly is an acid, good for dissolving limescale ETC, it works on rust by breaking it down to black ore like colour, the electrolysis then can get to work better. But beware it stinks and will burn your nostrils and can cause eye damage from splashes, oh , and it takes your skin off too.......But it is great for rust.!!
Oh wow that sounds a strong chemical, i love it lol
@@drasticg Its very close to caustic soda. The acid will eat away at the crustaceans on the metal, as this is mostly calcium, (which lime consists of in your kettle in hard water areas).
So cant wait to try this out
Great video mate! Keep it up👍
Thanks pal
Cool video and the electro magnet

Good to see you tinkering with projects like this & looking forward to seeing some repurposed items in future vids! As an experiment how about making a vid comparing electrolysis, evapo-rust & ACF50 to see which is the most effective at cleaning similar rusted items?
Cool idea whats acf50?
@@drasticg It's a spray lubricant like WD40 that you use on electrics & mechanical components, except it's supposed to attack existing rust as well. Often used on motorbikes where the engine is exposed to the elements.
@@RobbadobBob cool i will look into that thanks

Viniger works well in stead of water aswell
Really may try that
I've tried this on a few rusty bolts etc, using a 12 volt bench power supply, seems to work quite well but I've got a power supply transformer I want to try sometime, from an old stair lift, its a 36 volt, 1.7 amp output! Should work quite fast i reckon! Extreme Electrolysis!
Wow be careful pal lol

I dont know much about this process but isnt it removing good metal also?
No just rust, the pitting is because it was so corroded
Hello Drastig, how ya doing son good l hope. Been stuck in my tent all day today, the weather up here in Scotland is seriously very wet and windy, so no cycling today. I'm lucky l brought my new battery charging pack with me.just watched 1 ad this time decided to watch the ads to piss off the clown who was giving you hassle about the pennies you're getting paid. But l passed the second ad this time as it was a 25 minute one about chemicals, UA-cam are not shy are they! You can use a 9 volt battery for what your doing the lower the voltage the better it works. Take care Drastig I'm going to cook up some fish l caught last night at the river Avon .👍🤔
Cheers for the advice inwil try battery next time
Hope.the weather gets better for you
@@drasticg its really bad just now ,but hopefully it will get better, but saying that I'm enjoying the time away from the flat, l have my telescopic fish rod with me and my metal detector, if the weather eases off a bit I'll do a bit of detector work as I'm surrounded by farmers fields just now and the river Avon is only a ten minute cycle run from were I'm camping so might go fishing tonight again l love my fish as l don't eat any red meat. 👍
do bones not annoy you
@@drasticg not really l used to work as a fish fillerter in Aberdeen back in 1979.🤔👍
I can't find the question asked but what is the benefit to using electrolysis as opposed to using the wire brush on the drill? Thanks in advance.
Electrolysis will de rust places wire wheels cant
Good editing that! Still wasn’t an expensive mountain bike though 👍🏻
