    Hey folks! I have no idea what's caused this video to explode in view count lately, but I'm glad you all have enjoyed my run! I hope to make more PTCG content for UA-cam very soon - especially tutorial and informational content, but also more speedruns of this game in various categories. You can see my attempts live on Twitch at twitch.tv/pinecone606 if you'd like!
    If you'd like to learn more about the speedrun, check out our Discord server - discord.gg/Mh9daAt
    In the meantime, if you'd like to see a slightly more explained version of this run, you can check out the marathon run I did for PSR last year, where I got the equivalent of a 58 minute time. Not bad for a single attempt where I was also trying to explain the game live. ua-cam.com/video/QD_DWyXZgm8/v-deo.htmlsi=h1xHUlhUoGlzqGAi
    One more quick note: since this video launched, I've changed my username to pinecone606 and my pronouns are she/they. I no longer go by the name Chris. thanks for understanding 🏳️‍⚧️

      It got recommended to me and it was a pleasant surprise. It's been 2 decades and I'm glad to see the game I spent hours again and again. Even without fully getting into the PKMN TCG, this was still a GBC game I got obsessed to as a kid,

    Why did you load a saved game in the beginning?

    • @pinecone606
      @pinecone606  Рік тому +19

      In this category (and most others), you are allowed to load a save state that has completed the tutorial, as long as you add time to your timer to compensate for the length of the tutorial. This is why my timer starts counting from 8:03 instead of 0.
      The tutorial is basically completely on rails and offers no legitimate opportunity to save time, so over 99% of runs submitted start from the end of the tutorial just so we aren't sitting around for 8 minutes every single attempt.

    How did you skip all that text so fast. I can't do it on gameboy

    • @pinecone606
      @pinecone606  Рік тому +3

      Go to Config on the start menu and raise text speed all the way up. You can also turn off animations there. This is done right after the tutorial, but right before the "tutorial skip" save file that I start from is saved, so you don't see it here.

    I'm confused how you're able to get the opponent to only put 1 pokemon into play.

    • @pinecone606
      @pinecone606  Рік тому +3

      Short answer: You just reset until they only draw one.
      Long answer: Gym Leaders and the Grandmasters cheat, and they are guaranteed 2 basics in their starting hand as well as 2 in their top 5 cards. Everyone else's decks are totally random, with a varying number of basics in the deck. Certain battles like Brittany and Joshua are harder because they have 16+ basics, others like Nicholas and Jennifer only have 12.

    Awesome run! I tried this using the same parameters and the best I've had so far is 1:20:44. My issue is I'm not sure what exactly the manipulation you do for the first two fights are, and I can't seem to find anything on it anywhere, do you perhaps have a sort of explanation for it or a resource by chance?
    My big issues in this are the RNG, I've had a run where I didn't get any Scythers, so I had to improvise. I didn't get any Articunos in another, that hurt a decent bit. However, almost every run, I finish with like one Dugtrio and lose all potential timesaves to the Grand Masters and their annoying birds. I'm guessing the manipulation for the first two battles can help a lot with ensuring you get a few of these cards at least to help with the battles later?
    Again, congrats on the sub 48 Bulbasaur deck, that's awesome.

      Hey, glad to hear you're getting into the game! The battle manipulations I do here aren't super well documented, no. They were created using a program developed by another runner, Hwangbro. The short version is: a program takes a save state and plays through every possible battle within a ~600 frame window based on that savestate. From there I looked at the data and found groups of consecutive frames I wanted to target with this manipulation, then played with a timer until I could consistently land on those frames. There's a few quirks and complications with it (eg, you need your deck to be exactly the same, assembled in the same order), but that's the gist.
      The battle manipulations I used here were less about improving speed and more about improving my consistency - when going for a sub-50 time I was just resetting too many runs to Amanda, and I wanted to more efficiently attempt runs. I wouldn't consider using them you're getting runs consistently under an hour. The amount of time they save relative to the effort needed to use them is fairly marginal before then. That said if you're dead set on it, DM me or join the PTCG discord and reach out to me there and I can send you the data and manipulations I've got. I currently use a new set of manipulations that save a bit more time and achieve a little more consistency than I use in this route.

    • @pinecone606
      @pinecone606  Рік тому +1

      Not getting critical cards can be a huge bummer, and the battle manipulations can basically guarantee that you get certain cards, yes. My current battle manipulations are planned with this in mind. That said there is a fairly easy way to try and get a specific rare Colloseum pack right at the start of the game - I just posted a messy video on that - and you could use that to try and guarantee an early Scyther or Dugtrio or an extra Hitmonchan. Basically using the timer to manipulate the booster pack in the mailbox that you can get at start of game.
      Grand Masters will kill most of your runs, there's not much way around that... with experience and knowing when to reset and what hands to look for, you can consistently get through that section in 15-20 minutes but there will always be a lot of variance and it's super hard to even approach a 10 min dome.

      the other thing I'm gonna add quick while I remember is that for most people id recommend a slight variation on this route here rather than the exact order I'm doing it. I recommend for most players or for things like marathons etc a route where you target Jessica and Michael first, then Heather and the Lightning gym, then Chris and finally Amanda at the very end of the initial segment. For Amanda you can add a Charmander to the deck to help win against Scyther a little more consistently, then after that you can take the rest of the Water gym with Electabuzz. Then Science, Grass (Magmar unless you have a lot of DCE), Dugtrio deck, Rock, Fighting. if you don't get Articuno, just grab Mewtwo after the Psychic gym for Mitch; it's about the same even with the extra deck edit. If you don't get Scyther, Nidorino is plenty capable for the Rock gym.

      @@pinecone606 Thanks for this! I'm honestly a bit too busy nowadays to dedicate doing runs actively and stuff, but a friend of mine is doing a charity event for cancer and I wanted to run this since it's one of my favourites. I set an estimate of 1:15:00, but so far the best I've hit is 1:17:58 using the same path in this video. I like the idea of the path here a lot more, ensuring you have some safety cards for Amanda. On top of her annoying Scyther, she also has an Aerodactyl she can sic on you, which also has Flying resistance, super annoying.
      Overall, the RNG is at least minimally forgiving, like I haven't had any attempts end with none of the deck edits being possible, but just from general knowledge of the game I feel this route will have a much better chance. I did grow up religiously playing this game so remembering the paths and menus are easy enough, at least. In fact, I like playing Bulbasaur & Friends because as a kid, I meticulously followed the Official Prima Guide that said Charmander & Friends was what they recommended. I picked that so much that I just want to play something else all the time.
      Big thanks again for your insight.

    What’s the point when the game is manipulated for speed? Not legit in my opinion.

    • @pinecone606
      @pinecone606  Рік тому +9

      Speedruns are all about beating games as fast as possible, through whatever methods people like using. When people use a method that others don't like, then we make a new category that allows or bans that method. For example, arbitrary code execution allows the game to be completed in 4 minutes, but I don't enjoy doing that, so I play in Glitchless category which doesn't allow ACE.
      Currently the any% glitchless category does allow timer manipulations for some battles but not others. I've always been a little uneasy about the distinction, so for my own satisfaction more than anything, I'm attempting to replicate or beat this time without the manipulated battles at the beginning. So far I've gotten a 51 minute time without any timer manipulated battles, and I'm closing in on sub-50.
      You're welcome to consider whatever categories you want to be legit or not legit. Some people for example don't play with any save and quit, for reasons that make zero sense to me, and they would hate this run obviously. We can all play games however they bring us joy. There's no one way to do it.
