For me it's difficult to keep the needle from clogging when injecting directly into the stem...so I did a little experiment. Squash LEAF stems are hollow like straws and very easy to puncture without clogging the needle. To test my theory, I first poked a few needle holes in the stem like I normally would. Then I chose leaves that grew from a couple inches above those holes and injected those leaf stems. No clogging and the whole payload when in very easily. Sure enough, after a few seconds the solution was weeping out of the holes I made in the stems, so I verified it's in the stem. Doing this all this season and have have zero SVB damage.
Nice.. I was under the impression there was some hard tissue where the leaf base meets the stem. At times I've trimmed away dead or dying leaves and it seemed they Weren't completely hollow at The stem. I have also found borers Now in leaf stems leading to the main stem. I think they definitely Enter on a leaf stem and work their way down to the main stem. I've found borers that entered In the middle of the leaf stem and worked the wrong way up to the leaf... 🤯
I do the same. When I inject into the base I never seem to hit a hollow spot and it just sprays back at me or clogs. I syringe it right into most of the leaf stems and hope it flows down into the base. Worked pretty well last year.
@@LilHickory I don't spray BT, only inject it. The other prevention I use is diatomaceous earth at the base of the plane. Also removal of eggs when I find them under the leaves.
I’ve been injecting BT for the past 3 years or so, it works really well. I also use a small paintbrush to paint on straight bt to the stem every 10 day-2 weeks(I only have 4-6 plants so it’s not too much work). I don’t use the row cover anymore because the moths emerge from the soil & are trapped under the cover & are free to eat my zucchini. I also dissolve an un coated Asprin in water & spray it on the leaves of my cucurbits & solonacea plants. Hi! I just found your channel. Thank you for the zucchini protections tips. I am trying to get more prepared for next year, as I lost all my squash to the borders this year! I've been gardening for 40 years and have never had them before. I plan to get the B.T. for next year and be prepared.
Most farm stores around here sell syringes and pointy needles of different sizes for livestock use. I use your injection method to. Also I've went to planting my summer squash in containers. I have them up on old milk crates so they can be spun around and inspected. Easier to work on for sure!
I'll be trying the BT injection method this week. To avoid clogged needles, I'll be using a needle or small nail to make the initial hole before injecting with the syringe needle. If that doesn't work, I'm not above using a portable drill with a small drill bit to start the injection hole. FYI, just for fun, in early April I started 6 zucchinis in an egg carton, using window sill light to sprout the seeds, and taking the seedlings outside on warm days. By early May, just at our last avg frost date, they were clearly ready to go, so I planted them in the garden. It's now June 4, and we will be harvesting our first zucchinis by the end of the week. This is kind of a big deal here in Iowa Zone 5 where our growing seasons are so short. Normally you'd direct sow the zucchini in May and expect to start harvesting in late June or early July. As for the egg carton, I taped the lid to the tray and cut an oval hole in the lid. This allowed for more soil for the zucchinis to grow than if I had only used the tray without the lid. This method didn't work for herbs and cukes, but it did work for tomatoes, peppers, and the zucchinis. The herbs and cukes needed more light and warmer temps (my guess). OR. OR. It could be I watered too much. I have a lot to learn about growing seedlings...
I ordered syringes with needles that had no point through Amazon by typing in "syringes for agriculture use". Then i used a whet stone to gently put a point in it
I just love how you talk,,I’m gonna order BT today.I already cleaned some of my raised beds and just planted new zucchinis. This time i’m gonna use BT for first time as preventative.finger cross for better harvest for the fall.
This method is really effectively. This year I followed your direction and also used liquid coper for powdery mildew. I have only three zucchini plants. They all are very healthy and I have so many zucchini that I saved some roasted for winter and also I share some more with my family. Thanks a lot for your video.
I asked a farmer how to stop this problem. His farm is a mile away. He has no insect issues. I certainly have insect issues. Only difference is they don't waste time shoveling up the soil. They use a rototiller. I will try rototilling next year. The blades destroy anything living in the soil.
Love your vibe. So much great info in this video. Living in Tennessee, we lose every single plant to vine borers. I got some syringes, I’m about to inject my squash with BT because spraying with BT and using foil hasn’t helped at all.
Definitely will be trying this on my cucurbits this year, I started late so no flowers yet but in another week or two it'll be time. SVB is really bad here in TX. Looks like it may also keep hornworms away from tomatoes too
I started this this year. I have to figure out how often I have to redo it. I have lost one plant so far. The last 2 years I have lost a bunch. Then the squirrels took what I saved doggin it. I need a doggo like yours.

Do you know what concentration you used? The BT liquid I have says 3 teaspoons per gallon for spraying applications. It looks like you're using a much stronger solution.
Hi thanks for sharing your squash bug struggles & solutions, my question is once i've done the 1st injection; how often afterwards do I have to repeat it?
I am in Cincinnati, Ohio and from first Jun I inject every week also I spray liquid coper every week to prevent powdery mildew. It is Mid August, I had plenty zucchini and no damage on my zucchini plants.
I just killed a vine borer moth in the yard near my squash plants the other day, so hopefully I can make this happen quickly. Thanks for the info! Also used to be an RN and haven’t practiced injections in a few years, so this will be fun 😅
OMGOODNESS! I just found your channel and I LOVE it! You are amazing girlfriend! Wish you were my neighbor! Back on topic, i have used this method for 4 years and I had great success. I've also found they pretty much leave my cushaw squash alone. ❤❤❤❤
I lost all my pumpkins last year. I have plants starting I didn't plant. I guess from seeds last year that didn't grow? I have some plants and borers are taking over. Where are the links for what you bought?
Tbh I just injected straight from the bottle no dilution but I didn't inject too much of it. 2-5ml I believe at a time. This may need to be done every week or every other week
I used syringe and BT finally. I saw a Hole and saw dust at the base of my Squash. I shot the BT into the hole. What I've noticed when attempting to inject other plants is either the needle gets clogged or I'm hitting some hard plant tissue inside the plant and I cant inject the liquid into The plant... Any ideas? Thanks.
The plant has to be mature at the base where it hollows out a bit. That's when I inject in there. There is some clogging of the needle after repeated stabs just push n clear out after every inject
So, I tried proactively injecting Bt into zucchini and acorn squash plants yesterday - couldn't get the needle into the part close to the ground, it was so dense; wondering if you can only do that if a borer has eaten a cavity in it. So I injected leaf stems above that base area, hoping the Bt would run down to the base, as near as it could get, and here's the awful thing - I went out to check today and the zucchini took it fine but the acorn squash, much smaller than the zucchini at this time, it seems to have killed the injected area. The stem is brown and shriveled where it was injected, and the rest of that stem and leaf is definitely going to be toast. What happened?
IT'S WORKING! (long enough to have to deal with squash bugs!) BUT how do you deal with the clogged needle? I poke the needle in, and nothing will come out unless I poke the needle all the way through, then back off and push the needle gently. But still, the needle gets plant material into it and nothing comes out. WHAT DO YOU DO?
That can be an issue I've had that happen before. Unfortunately the barrel of the needle can't be any larger without possibly damaging the plant. Good question!
Can't inject the base of the stems once they are solid. Use row covers or insect netting. Pick the eggs off with your hand if you find them and spray Neem oil to keep them from hatching.

No this wouldn't work for them. The vine itself is not thick enough to inject. Yea the clogging is the worst part . I clear out the syringe after every injection by pushing out he syringe. It sucks but no other option that I know of
Does the BT sit only in part of the vine where you injected it, or does it go throughout the entire vine? If I have a really long vine, should I be injecting at different points throughout the vine?
The vine borer moths lay eggs at the base of the plant. From the the larvae move up the stem. Also at the base is where the center of the stem hollows out so u can inject. No need for other areas unless it's hollow
@@TheAdhdGardener A lot of vine borers on my plant lay eggs on the leaves and they eat their way through the leaf stem and into the vine, so sometimes I find borers inside my vine toward the middle

This is UNSAFE!!!! I just called the company who makes BT because after watching your video I was going to try this method for sticking pure BT in a needle and injecting it into the stem. But before listening to a random person on the internet I looked at the instructions on the bottle. When I found NOTHING on the bottle about using a needle to inject I called the company. They started over and over that under no circumstances should you EVER inject your plant with this. It is unsafe to do so. Please do not tell people to be doing something unsafe. If it's a non edible go ahead but just because it's organic doesn't make it safe to do what you want.
People have been injecting BT into squash vines for years. It doesn’t affect the edible squash. It is an off label use of the BT, so the company cannot tell you to do it.

It is an off label use of the BT, so the company cannot tell you to do it.
what's the needle gauge size
I dont remember to be honest but higher the Guage # the smaller it is n vice versa. Shouldn't matter what size so long as BT gets inside the plant
Sooo how many acres do you take care of to do that to?
I only have a large backyard so it's easier for me
Wow, so many good tips thank you!!
Youre welcome!😁🌻
