It’s great to watch and revisit these videos not just for the knowledge but for the honesty, Ryan will genuinely take the fail and advertise that fact learn and have another go. Great channel been good to watch it grow 👍🏻
Top effort Ryan. Everyone remembers their first time up the Alpe! I almost fell of my seat when you said your goal was to do it under an hour at the start of the video. Three years on Zwifting and i'm still chasing that goal. If you ever feel like organising a group ride up the Alpe i'm sure you'll get a few subscribers to join you. I find it's great motivation to have people to pace with.
Rewatching this video several times, I've realised how far I have come on Zwift. Bought the Wattbike to help my running and fitness and completely caught the bug. Here is my first Zwift setup video - ua-cam.com/video/T9w465WQpiw/v-deo.html
Your videos are excellent. Seriously, you’re really good at this YouTubing thing, and your persistence and honesty in your fitness journey are really inspiring. Keep it up and well done.
Well done! Enjoying your videos a lot. I’m still riding outside for the moment while weather is okay, but got my zwift hub delivered this week and your videos are inspiring to make this a productive autumn/winter in my shed with Zwift!
I'm not a road cyclist, just a garage demon 😅 but Zwift and the smartbike has been one of my fav purchases. Good luck on your setup, hope you get alot out of it. My only advice, jump in feet first. 🙌
Three attempts so far, 1hr 4mins, 1hr & 1hr 1min yesterday, it truly is a beast! The elusive sub one hour time still eludes me. Brilliant video, very enjoyable and well done on the effort🤙🏻
Good effort mate! I just did stage 2 of the Tour of Watopia (long) yesterday, which is basically this same route up the AdZ. My PR is 1:00:20, just shy of getting under that elusive 1 hour mark. It is so painful that I'm loath to try it again until I'm darned sure I can get in under an hour. Keep up the good work!
My PR is 58:47 (3,3 w/kg) done last year but I only weight 65kg and love climbs. I find it more difficult to reproduce the same watts on flats and struggle to keep up with riders weighing 80/90 kg. The Ven Top on Zwift (Mount Ventoux) is much harder and having done the real climb, it is even harder than the virtual version. I could barely pedal down hill, my legs were so cramped up. Did the Tourmalet on Rouvy yesterday. That's brutal also. Very nice first attempt Ryan. It's hard to pace yourself the first time around.
Just watched this after doing it myself on Monday ..got off the bike saying im not doing that again ..but hell yes im definitely doing it again , its a great challenge . Great video..loved it 👍
I haven't been up the Alpe since Zwift opened the climb portal, but I'll definitely do it when the Epic Rides series comes around to Fire and Ice since that's my favorite route in the game.
Another great video! Just did my first attempt at the Alpe after watching your videos...good grief 🥵😂 never again 🤣 How the hell you do it more than once or at the end of a monster ride is beyond me! Proper well done to you!!! 💪
Congrats on completing your first-time up ADZ! You should turn your timeline graph on, so it shows your power and heart rate on the screen as you're riding. Valuable information in the moment and afterwards when you're analyzing your videos. I know you can see it after the fact but for me I like to know where I am and when I'm on the rivet. Also, if you had a long slow run planned and had to switch to the bike, then you want to spend at least two times that run time on the bike. As for the FTP test, it's not really needed unless you are going to do the zone training Zwift offers. I've been on Zwift for about 3 years and have never done an FTP test. I let my racing do that. Any 20-minute effort on Zwift will set your FTP if it increases. I actually just raised mine a couple weeks ago to 299@66kg in an ITT race. Great job with the content...cool to watch your journey!
recently attempted the alp after a 2 month first try, 83 minutes to 70 minutes average 200w pace it's always possible for an hour just takes some effort. Well done !
Good effort on your first attempt. You held pretty strong and steady. I’m with you in the 3.2 calculation not being a small number lol - my goal is sub 100 minutes by March. Keep up the good work!
Not bad for a first-timer ADZ. Recently compared Zwift Ven-top with my Mont Ventoux climb in France. About 11 minutes slower in real life than the virtual climb. Wind, heat, moisture, oxygen... There's a difference. One thing is quite correct and very useful. The choice of gears to mount on your bike. Enjoyed your video. Ride on!
Well done buddy. I once done this on Christmas Day fueled by mince pies 🤣. It's a great hill though to help get the Tron bike. I done this 18 times last Zwift season. Have a look at mont von in France. That's even bigger than this, its should destroying as there no markers to let you know where you're at on the hill.
@@RyanCondon it was a weird thing for me to do on Christmas Day but a fun one. I honestly believe mince pies are a great source of fuel for cycling just not with brandy 😂
Well done, this is motivational! I did it for first time on Monday, averaged 2.1 w/kg at 150 ave.HR which took just over 94 mins. I need to research how to fuel effectively as just has an electrolite drink and this fruit bar (20g carbs). I want to break 85 mins as the first milestone!
Epic effort Ryan, congratulation! Could you tell me the trainer difficulty setup you have made this climb with? I'm in similar shoes as you (similar age, even maybe a bit heavier than you 😁), and I'm aiming to climb ADZ aswell. On 100% difficulty if possible. But it doesn't seem possible for me any soon because I can't sustain 8-10% elevation any longer than a few minutes as of today ... obviously I'll need some time of training to catch up. 😊
My trainer difficulty was on 50% for this climb. I've come to learn from other Zwifters that there is no need to have it on 100% as its the equivalent of having more gears to choose from. Plus you need to sustain the same power to climb it. Good luck, just get one climb under your belt and youll want to do it again like I did.
Fun fact, Marco Pantani up this climb has the 1st 2nd and 3rd fastest times. Lance Armstrong and Jan Ulrich have 4th and 5th place. Marco climbed the Alpe D'huez in around 37 minutes at around 57kg weight, he pumped out an whopping average of 6.8 W/KG for the climb. 27 years or something and the record still hasn't been broken. RIP Marco!
Some of the new ones in Climb Portal, like Tourmalet, are tougher. But in the Zwift game itself, probably only Ven-Top beats out the Alpe. Longer and way more monotonous. Makes the Alpe look like an action-packed speedfest 😅
Great vid. Very motivational. My 13 yr old boy and myself got into mountain biking this summer and been out n about every other day..literally. Now were thinking of getting an indoor set up. Not keen on a direct drive as were in a flat and cant be othered with setting up real bike indoors. So were looking at Watt Atom or Tacx Neo bike. Where you able to try out your bike in a shop prior to purchase?
No, unfortunately I dont think there is anywhere to try out the smartbike, at least nowhere I know of. Maybe a convention of some kind but I'd recommend emailing Wattbike and asking? I took the plunge and bought a Wattbike because I'd had people say it was the most sturdy and robust. As a heavier rider I didn't want something that moved too much and then eventually broke under me. Good luck on your journey. 🙌 Maybe see you in Watopia. 👍 I
Well done Ryan, there’s nothing like your first time up the alpe. It feels like a wall. I still remember it vividly, in my easiest gear in the small ring struggling to turn the pedal over. Took similar time. Great memories. Top work 💪👊
I managed to do it under an hour a few months ago for the first time after 3 other efforts but can’t see me bothering to try again it nearly killed me 😂😂

haha! 60 mins was just a joke. It was a fun one. I definitely think sub 90 mins is achievable.
Im up for that on my ebike.
I would join a spin up the alpe if you organise one. Maybe create a zwift club so you can make an alpe event?
I'd be up for a group ride, my last effort was 92min so I'm also looking for sub 90 next
