I've uploaded my attempt at racing a PRIMETIME ZWIFT RACE to my patreon page, this video is free to watch - www.patreon.com/posts/104354255? Thank you for your support.
That's Mad. Looking at your old videos feels like watching a different person. Hearing you say you are 96kg was amazing considering where you were not 2 years ago. Congrats on the weight loss and thanks for the inspiration to follow. As a 115kg new road cyclist myself I love seeing your progression. Keep it up.
Ryan, I remember a time when climbing the Alpe was out of reach. In this video you do it 4 times back to back. Absolutely inspirational mate. Keep it up 👍
Absolutely lovely when daddy get motivated/roasted by his daughter(s) 😂 I’ve a daughter of almost 17, they can be so caring and lovely and sarcastic the same time ❤
Your videos are great. Very motivational to watch average Joe just get better and better. The relationship between you and your daughter is a great example too. Keep it up.
A massive acheivement! You did almost a 1/2 Everest, and that's no joke. If you do this again in warm weather, Ryan, maybe consider having a couple of water bottles on hand that are filled with ice water. When you start overheating, dump some water on yourself. The cold water will soak your t-shirt, which in turn will keep you cooler, especially if you keep the fan going.
Way to go, Ryan! The hardest part of everesting is flipping the mental switch from “that’s impossible” to “maybe i could do that”. Now that you’ve cleared that hurdle, it’s just a matter of improving everything (all the things you described at the end) a bit until you get there. 💪
Good effort Ryan! The thought of doing an everest without any preperation at all seems a bit bonkers to me 😂 I don't know if your daughter is right and you will attempt it again this weekend but a couple of tips for your next attempt: One simple thing: you can do a turnaround with the Zwift Play controller (down button on the left). Change your clothes. Last time I switched shirts after every climb and shorts after every other climb. It makes a HUGE difference in comfort. Regarding food: you'll probably have to figure out a lot for yourself because everyone is different, but for me it was a big mistake to rely mostly on normal food just because you can easily get of the bike on the downhill. I almost quit my first attempt because I couldn't stomach it. After I switched to gels and bars it was much better. Good luck next time, you can do it!
If I could add my two cents here, saddle cream or butt cream, or whatever you want to call it is a lifesaver on long rides. I think Assos makes the best. After many solo 24 hour races, I am well-placed to make a recommendation.
GREAT JOb..... I focused on exact watts 185,188,191,194,197 etc.....negatively splitting the effort....all be it starting quite low.....finished with PLENTY in my legs....returned 2 weeks later to finish the 10,000 m challenge. The focus on wattage was what helped keep me engaged. Love your attitude.
Love this attempt Ryan. You will succeed eventually. My secret sauce for long zwift rides is changing clothes. Every 2 hours I change all my clothes. Even socks. You feel like a new person again. It makes such a huge difference.
I'm halfway through watching ur Everest attempt, ur an inspiration, you now gotta ride for me as I'm having a bone marrow transplant and am in hospital for the next 5 weeks, then 100 days of isolation, this is a relapse for me, I lost 25 kg of muscle mass last time and took till now to get it bk! You're a legend, keep up the great work m8. U've lost half ur body weight, wow is all I can say. Thanks Luke
Another brilliant video Ryan, well done!! Genuinely impressed with how well you did, and how you were still laughing with your girls towards the end, when most of us would have been collapsed in a heap on the floor. Can't wait for the second attempt next week 🤣👍
You’re a bloody legend mate!!! You’ve inspired me to attempt an Everest challenge!!! Let me know if and when you will do it again….. I will join you for a few climbs!
I’ve been training for unbound XL for the last long while and one thing that has helped me was to just eat something or take a bite of something every 5 minutes. It’s basically like a buffet on a bike! But for me giving a 5 minute rule helped me to eat more. Cause sometimes I’m on the bike having so much fun that I just forget to eat and an hour has already gone by! Awesome video
This was absolutely fantastic to watch in every way Ryan ! Officially subscribed now, and hopefully catch you on Zwift.. Greatly presented vid. Damn you had me laughing hard at times :) But you've got a great story too for people to hear
That is impressive and inspiring. I’m frankly avoiding even trying road to sky and I think you’ve just tipped me into thinking (thinking) I should give it a go. Thanks
"burnong" fealing feet and soer buttomarea are things that take long time to recover. I use to make my rides, when it was early years of zwifting, 200m climing/Day. That effort level was managebell😊 no spell cheks 😢
For a guy that have been doing sports and staying somewhat fit now for 40 years with no brakes.. Watching someone discover the joy of being fit and doing physical stuff late in life is just amazing to me For me. Finding the Balance of fitness and living life/family friends have been Key oing too much will burn you out .. But a hardcore challenge now and then is the best test .. Keep going
Man, that challenge is something that I've not even attempted. I've got a consistent sub 1h AdZ and just looking at how much time it would take to do this has me put off. Kudos to you for even testing it!!
nice one Ryan, you re kinda crazy in a good way . V Ev still on my list , did also 4 in one go , checked some different powerlevels for the climbs , . Did the 1st climb at Z3/Z4 , 2nd at Z3 and 3rd + 4th at high Z2 , i prepared a lot of waterbottles , half of them with electrolytes and the other with carbs or water with gels , than Haribos , cookies and powerbars , changed bibs , jersey and cycling shoes , spinned my legs out on the downhills for a bit
Another great entertaining video Ryan, thanks! I’ve never heard of this challenge before, so it might go on the bucket list. I know you like challenges and wondered if you’ve heard of ‘Chase The Sun.’ I’m planning to do it next year. Bit of an insane challenge…right up your street!😂
Well done great effort and top Mark's for calling it when you did. Maybe next time change your bibs on every climb and lots of chamois cream. I was watching a ultra cycle channel and he planned his nutrition 3 meals ahead of the ride, carbs no fat no fibre and for recovery simple food but more protein. I got the longest day ride I've ever done coming up next month so looking for tips. This content really helps and inspires.
Hi Ryan, brave man for attempting this! Haven't finished watching yet, but keep wondering if you've had a bike fit? Even some minor adjustments might make it easier to spend those long hours in the saddle. Speaking of which, a saddle with a relief channel can also be a massive help. And chamois cream!
I might train and attempt a v-everesting for next years strava/lecol 8848m challenge, it’s usually a free jersey if completed in one ride, you did well for not doing any specific training for it 👍 I will probably have to stick a 50-34 chainring and 34 or 36 cassette on the rear when I try it though and any time I climb I put the Trainer difficulty to 100%, like you I race with it at 50-60%
11:00 you can make a u turn with zwift play. It's a lot more comfortable. It's sound obvious, but when I realized it I had been using zwift play for like 2 weeks or so :)
That was amazing! I would have taken a shower and changed my kit from all the sweat. You might want to consider some Maltodextrin (Carbohydrate powder) to mix in your bottle. Putting food in your body when you are not hungry on a bike could lead to trouble. Shameless applications of chamois butter will eliminate the chaff. I was thinking about attempting the Four Horseman next week, this is inspirational.
That's really impressive that you made it up the Alpe four times! Everesting is something I've thought about on occasion before quickly dismissing. I'm only 68kg, and I still estimate it would take me 14+ hours. Maybe some day in the future, but definitely not yet. Of course, I would do it outside; doing it virtually is a level of torture I have NO interest in. 🤣
Wow this a wild video. Great Great Great try. As a heavy rider maybe the heaviest rider on Zwift I may NEVER try that challenge. You know hills hate us heavy riders with a passion. That’s one thing I do need to learn too. How to eat to become a better rider. Keep up the great work you will get it one day.
Hey Ty! Thanks for commenting. Zwift hills = pain! I loved your ADZ video a few weeks back. That was one mammoth effort. 🙌 Thanks for watching my friend. 🙏👍
@RyanCondon just rewatching your race to the stones, you're approaching checkpoint 4. Amazing how far you have come, fancy doing it again sometime? I have my first 100k in September
Well done! 4 times up is amazing! But you almost did an "Basecamp" - which is half of everesting (so, 4424 m of climbing)! There is a everesting site also.. with great tips and stuff. Also a "Hall of fame" section there where everyone who has done either a Basecamp or everesting is listed!
Well done Ryan. It's great that you gave it a solid effort. I've been thinking about this but fairly certain it would defeat me. Does the trainer need to be at 100% difficulty or does that not matter for this challenge?
Amazing effort. Best I’ve done on Zwift was the 100 mile ride for the black jersey. 6 hours 20 minutes later I was toast. Couldn’t imagine climbing that much for 8 hours
@@RyanCondon half of an everesting is more impressive king 👑 especially weighing when youre over 90kg that's no easy feat! Im sitting at 83 and man its still slow going up hills
Max Kudos for even trying that, it's the worst thing i've ever done!! lots of food/water within arms reach, double bagging (2 pairs of shorts), Vaseline everywhere including the nipples haha, a temperature in the teens and a sensible pace👌. I don't know if you even realised but there's a "half Everest" award on the official website, not sure on zwift. Which you weren't far off 4450M ish. Amazing though well done, i look forward to your trying again 💪💪👋
4x up the Alpe is a great achievement. A friend of mine who has an FTP of 360 did this a few months back. He completed all the climbs but he said he went through hell and wanted to give up multiple times.
Great effort but I'm sure there's easier ways to ride 100kms! The longer you ride the more critical your setup. Anything over 4-6 hours really shows if things aren't set up correctly. 3 main contact points - handlebars, seat and pedals all need to be right. Good padded shorts are a must too. My longest ride IRL is 150 miles with 12,000ft of climbing, 2019 Coast to Coast in a day. It took me around 14hrs to complete but my backside was fine. My feet had hot sores for the final 3hrs. I plan to do Chase the Sun ride from Sheppy to Weston Super Mare, 205 miles in a day, if I can motivate myself.
Everyone is writing nice comments to you, but mine won't be quite like that. After seeing your first climb, I was already 95% sure you wouldn't finish the challenge. I personally completed an outdoor Everesting in 13.5 hours and 10,000 meters in 17 hours. Now, a few tips :) How you prepare for Everesting will determine how much you suffer. I only started feeling general fatigue after 5,000 meters, and my legs after 8,000 meters of elevation gain, where my pace on the climbs was about 3.45 W/kg. Choose a cooler day for a vEveresting. Improve and change your food and drinks to include lots of carbohydrates, zero fat, and zero protein - I recommend gels or energy bars. Also, drink isotonic drinks that contain carbohydrates - you need to test which ones you like best - and on top of that, drink beverages containing electrolytes (they must have sodium and potassium). You need to consume at least 60 to 120 grams of carbohydrates per hour - that's a lot of quality food! In terms of training - go to the gym, your overall body muscles are too weak, which causes you to sway too much when climbing, and you're losing even more energy because of that. For the bike, add specific strength work like 7 x 3-5 minutes with a cadence of 65-70 at 110-115% FTP or outdoor climbs of +10%, and long rides of 3-5 hours at a steady pace of 70-74% FTP - pure Zone 2. I'm rooting for you to succeed!
I'm not sure I'd class your comment as 'un-nice'? You make good points. I'll take 5% belief you thought I'd finish it. You wouldn't have said that if you watch some of my videos from only a year ago. I am familiar with endurance training and nutritional intake, I just don't always listen to my own advice sometimes. You're 100% right about the carb intake. Weight also plays a huge factor mentally when progress is slow going. I might return to this challenge in the distant future, for now I'm focused on strength building and weight-loss. Thanks for watching and for the comment/tips.
@@RyanCondon not everyone takes well to hearing about their mistakes and getting advice. But I'll add something else for you - W/kg is overrated among amateurs. Go for a body composition analysis, where they'll tell you your body fat percentage, your lean body mass, and determine how much body fat you can lose without compromising your performance. I'll tell you about my own mistakes so you don't make them. Two years ago, I reached around 5.5 W/kg, with an FTP of 350, but I went too low with body fat, below 5%, and the whole next year was a disaster. I had no strength to ride. Simply maintaining a body fat percentage of 10-15% is much healthier because we have more energy for cycling and we recover better. I started eating more on the bike, and as soon as I get home, the first thing I do is have a recovery meal with 20 grams of carbs and 25 grams of protein, unless it was a very hard session - then 40g/40g. Only after that do I take a shower, clean the bike, spend time with family, etc. I also changed my diet to maintain a 4:2:1 ratio (carbs, protein, fats - for example, if you eat 200g of carbs a day, then 100g of protein and 50g of fats). I may not have such a high FTP now, around 310-320W (about 5-5.2 W/kg), but I feel much better, and I've improved almost all my PRs on climbs where I thought I had hit my limits. If you have any questions, I’ll be happy to answer them
Nice one! You’re really progressing. One point, you mentioned pants. If it wasn’t a term for cycling shorts, then fyi you don’t wear underwear under cycling shorts. You can then use chamois cream to help reduce chafing. Ride on👍
I'm trying this when winter comes. Do you know if virtual gears are officially allowed? Great support team..."You can't quit....LOSER!.....I'll give you a tenner if you do it again" 😂
My kids are brutal.. 😅 Im not sure about the virtual gears but I'm pretending to climb everest on a bike in my house so all is fair game the way I see it..
Fuelling is key Ryan, even a change of clothes on your breaks. Have a look at sis or precision fuel who do sweat tests which can help you choose which electrolytes you need
Mammoth effort, particularly with all that numbness and pain. It's no fun when particular body parts are non-stop screaming for more blood flow. I'm looking forward to seeing your next attempt with a form fit mattress strapped to your seat 🤣.
Insane Ryan! I don't want to go near the Alpe again and you suffered it 4 times and plan on returning to do EVEN MORE!!!!!!!😱 I'm glad you find the motivation to do these challenges mate, but I much prefer just riding my bike for the pleasure of it 😁 Maybe wait until you're down to my weight (76kg) and try again 😉Perhaps that will mean we're back in the colder weather and it might be a bit easier (as if vEveresting is easy!)🤣🤣 Also. You need better cheerleaders 😂 See if Erik is available for 16 hours 😂
2:50 but why? It would be so cool to make it official. The only possibly hard part can be trainer difficulty to 100% if it's not 100% yet (I don't know what TD you have)
You have a watt bike which has gearing as small as 30/36 could easily make it up with trainer difficulty at 100% Something to think about next time to make it official
I have had a couple friends that did this challange . =) Both times I would jump on zwift and support them I would join them for 2-3 run up take a brake and jump on again for the Last time they had to go up.. Just to support them .. just going up 3 times was quite the challange .. and I have been biking for years on a hobby level tho .=) at 90kg ..
Unfortunately there’s not too much you can do to solve arse pain on a ride of this length, apart from getting fitter, the more power you can sustain the more weight you put through your legs, if your power drops you put less weight through your legs and more through your saddle
You should seek help from a professional trainer (or to a structured plan on trainingpeaks for example). You're potential for improvement is much higher than what you think but you lack experience, training knowledge and nutrition knowledge too... trust me it will make your path to fitness MUCH EASIER AND FASTER
You're probably right. I've come a long way and I enjoy the journey. Worried that with a structured plan the fun will be replaced and thats my priority. No way I could have lost 90+kg without the fun. Pleased you liked my vid. ;)
Your preparation is off mate. You should have prepared your food, drinks, snacks on the bike and someone there who would get you everything you need! You are going for an 8k climb!

Chapeau, fantastic performance and great video
Thanks Richard.
I know. I stopped short. I might have to try again. 🙈
Well done Ryan. It's great that you gave it a solid effort. I've been thinking about this but fairly certain it would defeat me. Does the trainer need to be at 100% difficulty or does that not matter for this challenge?
I think it needs to be 100% for the official rules. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video, means a lot. 🙌🙏
Amazing effort. Best I’ve done on Zwift was the 100 mile ride for the black jersey. 6 hours 20 minutes later I was toast. Couldn’t imagine climbing that much for 8 hours
Over 6 hours is still pretty impressive. Welldone. 🙏🙌
@@RyanCondon half of an everesting is more impressive king 👑 especially weighing when youre over 90kg that's no easy feat! Im sitting at 83 and man its still slow going up hills
@@BooksWithBrad thank you very much. That means alot 🙏🙌
You're an absolute mad man! :D
Well done Ryan. Change of bibs few times maybe?
Yes, I should have!
Chamois Butt'r my guy. Chamois Butt'r.
Good effort Ryan. I need to revisit ADZ, I'm still traumatised from the list time I climbed it.
You even thinking of attempting this is both crazy and inspiring
I'd go with crazy. 😅
I can’t imagine spending 8+ hours on the trainer.. that is a hell of an effort. Well done
Thanks Scott. I appreciate the comment. 🙌🙏
Fantastic Ryan. Choose a charity and do it as a charity ride. donate your takings. It’ll motivate you to finish. Unreal. Loved the video
I'd happily donate the takings. This video will make about £1.20.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
4x up the Alpe is a great achievement. A friend of mine who has an FTP of 360 did this a few months back. He completed all the climbs but he said he went through hell and wanted to give up multiple times.
To keep going I'd had to have endured probably 20ish hours. Tough challenge.
@@RyanCondon I have an FTP of 320. I haven’t even bothered to attempt it. I’m 14 stone. My strengths are on the flat. Fk going up the Alpe 8 times.
I've been on Zwift since Xmas and only now ascended Everest in total! Gotta say, i value my "Jon Thomas" too much to try this!
The climb to the first corner is the gardest section in real life! It just goes on and on!
I hate that corner. I want to quit every time..
Everything was fine except my backside and that's because these bike seats are instruments of torture. That chase the sun looks exciting. 🙏
Ride on👍
Thanks for the tip. 🍑🙈
Well done for doing what you done... You're mental 😂
Cheers Kev. 👍
Can you not use your Zwift play for the u turn
I'm trying this when winter comes. Do you know if virtual gears are officially allowed?
Great support team..."You can't quit....LOSER!.....I'll give you a tenner if you do it again" 😂
My kids are brutal.. 😅
Im not sure about the virtual gears but I'm pretending to climb everest on a bike in my house so all is fair game the way I see it..
And you end up loosing a tenner because your brain was fried too 😂
@@PODLine they scammed me well. 😅🙏
That's within the rules, right?
I think the laws of physics might be the bigger challenge 😂
Insane Ryan! I don't want to go near the Alpe again and you suffered it 4 times and plan on returning to do EVEN MORE!!!!!!!😱
I'm glad you find the motivation to do these challenges mate, but I much prefer just riding my bike for the pleasure of it 😁
Maybe wait until you're down to my weight (76kg) and try again 😉Perhaps that will mean we're back in the colder weather and it might be a bit easier (as if vEveresting is easy!)🤣🤣
Also. You need better cheerleaders 😂 See if Erik is available for 16 hours 😂
@DontGetDroppedCycling has already declined my next attempt. 😅
2:50 but why? It would be so cool to make it official. The only possibly hard part can be trainer difficulty to 100% if it's not 100% yet (I don't know what TD you have)
You have a watt bike which has gearing as small as 30/36 could easily make it up with trainer difficulty at 100%
Something to think about next time to make it official
Setup a Veveresting gang, set a date, all go for it on set date.
Sounds like a lot of fun. 👍💪
Says a lot about your fitness that you can just decide to give vEveresting a go. 4 times up the Alpe sounds impossible to me. 💪👌
Says more about my mental state. 😅
Thanks Lee but I know for a fact you'd smash 4+ times. 💪
Thanks for not calling me 😉
You didn't fancy hyping this sufferfest?
Answer ,Yes it is
Are you wearing pants under bib? Please say no 😂😂
Er... No?!
I would change socks, jersey and most importantly shorts after 2 accents. Might make the ride a bit easier.
wouldnt feel too bad im b cat failed it too
If I had been watching this live, I would have told you to change your shorts and socks every other time up the Alp. Great effort though.
Unfortunately there’s not too much you can do to solve arse pain on a ride of this length, apart from getting fitter, the more power you can sustain the more weight you put through your legs, if your power drops you put less weight through your legs and more through your saddle
I agree. Thanks for watching Will.
GREAT STUFF! Maybe try with girls at home, them there can made less grinding feeling.
I put 90grams of sugar and 750mg of table salt in each water bottle
Get a lighter weight jersey might help the heat also
You should seek help from a professional trainer (or to a structured plan on trainingpeaks for example).
Had fun trying.
Are you wearing underwear under your bib shorts? If so you need to stop. They will cause chaffing 👍
Hi Ryan. Do you have a Referral link to Zwift so i Can support you this Way? 👍🏻🚴💨
