Whether you get the town to fly, he isn't really feataured. The game in general assumes he's dead. Ryu doesn't get flashbacks to him, Patty never mets him, etc.
This is such an amazing ending. Even if it´s sad it´s so fitting considering the game intro and how the plot developed. I think it's far better then the happy ending ( although, when I play through the game in recent years I always get the happy ending, because it's such an inconvenience to not have a flying township ). It's impressive how much this can touch you despite the lack of cut-scenes and voice-acting, they really could make good jrpg's back in the days... While I'm at it I also want to pay my tributes to BOF 2; the most underrated game of the SNES era. A game that gave me so many hours of entertainment ( and still does, from time to time ). This was, by far, the best game in the series. It went downhill after this......
The lack of cut-scene, overly detailed blabbering and voice acting can actually make something that is touching like this.. And people keeps telling me that I hate story because I also hate long dialogues of Trails series and Tales of series???

It's whoever in your party that has the most affinity with by the end of the game. By default it's going to be Nina, but it can be ANYBODY... except for Deis (Bleu).
Even if Bof3 is amazing! I still love Bof2 story period! to me is the best main character story of the series. so much emotion in to each character and what they go thru, you fall in love with the game, specially the choices sequence in the plot is masterfully done!,compared to the other Bof games.

Pros: Better graphic, cute kids (Ryu crying and Nina teasing Ryu omg), game play elements seem diverse and great. Storywise, if a game is an essay, then the intro failed miserably, I don’t know what is the point of the story, until Rei and Teepo went missing, but even then, it’s still not the whole point. When meeting with Garr, still not. BoF did well. BoF 2 did worse - kinda vaguely but I could still see part of it (find out what happened to Ryu’s family). As a whole, BoF pales in comparison for obvious reason as it’s too oldschool, even generic to some extent. BoF 2 is great. A lot of people say that this end is canon because it fits better the narrative and I agree, this end makes more sense with the proposal of the game, nevertheless it is still sad, even when Ryu defeated Deathevan he has not the straight to live a normal life because Evans still could return, thus as the choisen child he sacrifice himself in order to let the world lifes in peace. In the end life is simply unfair, isn't it?
I thought this was the only ending back in the day. Was shocked at how sad it was, but it made sense and it still let the rest of the world live in peace. When I played it again over a decade later and went for the good ending, I was shocked again, but this time at how stupid it was. Ryu turns his town into a flying city and it slams on top of the cave. It goes against how serious the game plot was overall (aside from some silly parts like with the frog castle). If I ever play it again, going for the sad ending.
I also disagree, I find more fitting that the cycle is broken, and allows Ryu to live a happy life with his friends, after everything he went through, instead of having a dragon to protect the gate once again. Actually, I have never seen the point of sad endings in games like this one, except for punishing the player for not doing things correctly.
The happy ending is damn earned as a player and character after all the bullshit... But your dad+flying town coming out of nowhere to say "I got you son" is pretty retarded and maybe too much of a tone whiplash. This is why I'm glad the options exist.

This episode have a very special place for me and it's still my favorite RPG ever. I remembered well the first time I finished it in 1996, the story and characters was fantastic. Dark Fantasy style with a very strong/sad plot like this ending just perfect but really poignant, with the beautiful soundtrack the effect was just incredible. It's funny because It took me 20 years to see the true ending, but the sad one still has a lot of meaning.
Its sad cuz Ryu had two women who cared for him, but he had to leave them behind. Plus, Katt is wailing on his nose trying to wake him up futile. That always gets me XD
The game has three possible endings: 1) After finishing off Habaruku in Gate, elect not to go into the underworld and finish the job. This gives you the worst ending, where eventually Evans and his army grow strong enough to battle past Dologany and the rest of the Dragons to come conquer the planet's surface. 2) The second ending is the one seen above- elect to go down into the underground and finish off Evans and his movement, but don't free your father or locate Eichichi (or you can do one but not both). 3) The best ending requires you to go to Guntz as soon as you have the whale, and locate Eichichi so you can invite her back to your town. Also, during Evrai, when faced with the three-eyed boss with the old man, kill off the eyes while keeping the old man alive. Then, much later in the game, go into the well in Township and it should take off. Once you have the flying town, you're locked into the good ending.
Instead of saving Ryu's father Old Man Ganer from the boss back in Part 51 - and thus losing the ability to turn Township into a airship. Otherwise if you saved Father Ganer the good ending will happen.
+Basileous Productions You have to do more then save Ganer, you have to get township to fly. I wanted both endings so I saved Ganer but did not make the town fly and then saved a second game where I did so I don't have to play the whole game over twice.
You can save Ganner and still get the sad ending. Just don't enter the well on Township. EDIT: I used Bad Ending, but that is the ending when you tell Valerie to keep watch.

This was a revolutionary aspect of the breath of fire games at the time. Makes u wanna replay again to make everyone happy

Ikr, not only Nina lost her sister but she lost her love one who made her strong thought their advendure. That really sad.

I love this ending. And I like to think it's the one the writer had in mind before adding the happy ending, because after all it's a game for kids
