- Ketil beat Arnheid and nearly killed her!!
Anime title: Vinland Saga Season 2
Episode: 18
Premiere: January 10, 2023
Around the end of the millennium, Viking, the mightiest but atrocious tribe, had been out breaking everywhere. Thorfinn, the son of the greatest warrior, lived his childhood in the battlefield. He was seeking the land of reverie called Vinland. This is the story of a true warrior in an age of turmoil.

Dont confuse kindness for weakness . Turned out, Ketil was weak, not kind.
Exactly bruh
the help he did for thorfinn and einer is undeniable . even though ketil is wrong here , i will not go out and hate him .
@@MaskedEmperor18okay but stop trying to make people not hate him by pointing out stuff I hated ketil from the first moment I saw him because I knew deep he was a horrible piece of shit and I was right nothing you or what anyone else says is going to change that there is also the part where he was in bed with arnard in bed her eyes dead so why are you trying to make us like him.
@@nurseshark02 i know that's foul but at that point he was at his lowest . He was already losing a major fight in his life while her husband killed many of his men when they were needed the most (thanks to her freeing gardar from the leash) . Apart from that , Ketil was the only slave owner that treated his slave nicely. Thorfinn and Einer would have faced way worse (even death) if Ketil wasn't there . So yeah , what ketil did was bad but still he isn't that bad what people are saying.
@@MaskedEmperor18 He's the lowest of the low. He didn't "help" anyone einer and thorfinn were still his slaves just csz he's better than the rest don't make him good. What help did he do? He's a piece of shit who took advantage of her because she was his slave and she couldn't say no. That's actually rape even by today's standard then beat her near to death for trying to run back to her actual husband. This guy was the biggest piece of shit in the whole show.
Ketil is a weak man, always has been from the start. He just saw himself as benevolent, when really he was indecisive and cowardly.
I agree. He never truly built up strength. He took another, stronger, vikings identity and reputation. It is one thing to be nice, kind and also be able to handle the reality of violence and loss. It is a whole other thing to be nice, kind, and hope to god things go your way when the world tests you. You have this level of darkness to fall into.
Exactly always looking for someone else to make the tough calls
He's a wuss and a narcissist who takes no self accountability and pretends to be the "kind" slave owner. I'm honestly absolutely baffled to see so many defending him.
thats why i despise him, weak ugly little thing
Why is he weak for disciplining his 304 ?
arnheid's voice actress is amazing i could literally feel her pain when she started gasping in pain
I give her va credit. Her screams of terror are so convincing and sometimes hard to listen to
Her voice actor is popping up the whole second core. I hope she wins later this year in the anime awards.
@@nightbandit1260 her kid is died

In Season 1, we thought the violence was cool because it was mostly action scenes. Badass warriors like Askeladd, Thorfinn and Thorkell fighting on the battlefield. But in Season 2, when the violence happens to ordinary people on a farm, we find it a lot harder to stomach. But then it hit me. That's the point.
Season 2 retroactively makes the violence in Season 1 less cool and, in a different setting, shows how tragic it all is. This is emphasised by Thorfinn beginning to feel remorse for all the people he killed. There's also Olmar who starts off eager to become a revered warrior, only to learn how terrifying war is when he's forced to fight in it. And even in the early episodes/chapters, Vinland Saga has challenged the glorification of violence. See the striking panel of the villagers cheering for war, with Thors standing front and centre looking saddened and disappointed. It shows that it doesn't matter whether soldier or civillian, nobody deserves this kind of violence. Masterful writing!
You thought it was cool in episode 14 when Askeladd’s band murdered that village of people?
@@Sichlitt No but they wouldn't have survived the winter anyways
@@robiscd_ao they would if Askeladd’s men weren’t there.
No, violence is cool, especially against Ukrainians.
I've never thought it was cool. It was awful...
Ketil is the perfect example of "every coin has two faces"
True. The man who was hesitant to beat two starving children with a stick when things were smooth sailing readily did it to a slave woman when things were falling apart. Hard times show a man’s true character.
What really saddens me is that Arnheid's unborn child will certainly die from such a savage beating. It's messed up when we recall that Arnheid told Thorfinn & Einar that she intends to raise her second child properly.
I mean did she really give af tho? She was trying to leave with that baby to her flame lol

Vinland Sagas perfect example of the duality of man. Ketil was seen in such a good light through most of season 2 until something made him flip that switch. So many of the characters aren't just one sided. Thorfinn, Askeladd, Canute. They're all capable of doing both great and terrible things.
Except ketil isn't a man. He's a boy too afraid to lose his possessions.
@@pongangelo2048 spoken like a real broke ass
I love the realism in the character development. It's easier to be kind and generous when things are going well. How about when things are not going well? Can you keep it together when you're under the threat of losing everything you've worked for? When it's a matter of life or death, sink or swim, can you still be who you thought you were? Ketil is apparently failing that test.
@ilamos ___ Lol, you are provoking a real person to defend a fictional character. I'm glad you have your priorities straight.
@ilamos ___ true, these are the people who take kindness for granted and even expect it from people going through hard times.
@@thanetempest9710 This anime is based on history.
@@Pirokh So were the last 5 Viking shows I've seen but every one of them had a character named Ragnar that was completely different. Each of them had a Floki that was different. Every show had a different rendition of how "history" took place. So I don't know what point you are trying to make, my special little short bus rider. The 3 of you on this thread need to stop eating paint chips.
To be fair, that IS a major theme of the story from this point onward. Can yoi really stay kind and pacifistic when the whole world is trying to encourage you to be cruel?
Obviously, not defending Ketil, but his mental breakdown here is *somewhat* understandable . Still he is a *piece of human garbage* for taking his frustration out on Arnheid even *AFTER* she told him she was pregnant.
Old lady really played on his mental illness to see the pregnant lady get hurt that badly. How cruel.
Can you blame her? She’s obviously mad that her husband has been banging the younger, hotter slave
She's jealous always has been.
I mean the old lady was his wife. I'd be mad too if my husband spent his attention on a younger woman to relive the youthful pleasures of sex n see me as a second thought just cuz I was old.
However, her anger was misguided n should have been solely on Ketil as she has the right to voice her anger being his wife n all, while Arnheid was just a woman put in a situation she had no control over.
@@syrusangi8743 The problem was that she threw her frustration as an old Hag on all the slaves of the property. Countless times when acted so that the slaves get bad punishment (the kids that get beaten, Thorfinn & Einar) and finally when she did that with Arneid when Ketil was in bad mental state, it resulted in Arneid's literal death. That woman has blood on her hands. Thankfully both her and Ketil end the arc broke, destitute, and basically ended. Karma;

Sex slaves were common then. Beating them for leaving was as well. Judge him for the standards of the time and he's still a benevolent person

@@Sly9192 Arnheid also made a choice.
She released her ex-husband, resulting in the deaths of innocent farm security guards.
Then she hid him.
Eventually she ran away with him. (meaning death/long flagellation)
She herself condemned her child to death. Not Ketil. He was the reason she didn't die instantly.
@tomeeekcz Yeah, no, I also think she was stupid for doing that shit. Especially after she told the boys not to and to just let him go.
Anyone arguing she deserved it, realize that you all are still defending rape and slavery. Even Snake stops and tells Ketil that he is allowed to kill his slave but that is not a good thing. Most of you all wouldn’t even stop Ketil if you were in Snake’s position. Saying these were the rules back then doesn’t make it any better. This is a fictional portrayal of a cruel system that no longer exists yet you still defend it. No matter how well Ketil keeps Arnheid, she’s still there against her will and Ketil rapes her. She has no choice but to do it and no choice but get pregnant. Ketil never intended to let her go either like Thorfinn and Einar. They were special cases he bought to work the fields but he sure has plenty of other permanent slaves that keep his farm running and it wouldn’t even last a day without those slaves. Rest In Peace Arnheid, what an awful life you had to live. Vinland Saga isn’t even that exaggerated, hundreds of thousands of men like Gardar and women like Arnheid died like this throughout history if not in a far worse way.
Edit: Everyone is well aware of how things worked in the medieval era. Nobody is judging Ketil through a modern lens, he is a slave owner and is quite kind hearted compared to his peers. The issue is people in the CURRENT era saying that Arnheid deserved this. Yes, trying to escape was the greatest offense a slave could do and its normal for Ketil to beat/kill her for that but doesn't mean she deserved it. The people in the comments are saying "Ketil kept her so well and loved her yet she tried to escape fuck that bitch" THAT right there is what's wrong.
from a today stand point this is wild but from a back in the day history statement this is low key to be expected and its surprising he didnt beat einar and thorfinn too
Vinland Saga explain to us how our humanity improved through 1000 years.
The kingdom of these rapist and murder, now improved into one of the best civilizated countries of the world.
@@athletic.Nathan just because it was normal doesn't mean it was right, the concept of slavery was questioned several times in this season, and if he had beat thorfinn, that would mean breaking the promise he made with Lief
@N_Entertainment7 honestly he probably wouldn't have. I think a part of him thought they would likely have killed him. It is easier to rule with kindness than through fear

No wonder he turns into a mad viking. Now he truly becomes Iron Fist Ketil.
I too think this was meant to show what he can become at the lowest point (and he is absolutely justified to be that frustrated about the upcoming attack and feel betrayed by everyone), because as you mentioned up to this point he was really a good person, so I'm not sure if THIS is the moment he snaps and goes full mad, or it's just now that his true nature shows
Nah, he was that kind of person already. He clang so hard on Arnheid before and it's to be expected that the money all the things he clang on for security go down he'd become like this. @So what touch grass brotha u lost
I think this is really the scene where the audience snaps out of the Fun Farm stuff and remembers that these people are slave owners and rapists. It doesn't matter if he was a good man at one point, he used enslaved people for labor, and sex. Even if he was a fairly benevolent owner by the standards of the time, that does not detract from the fact that he is a monster of a man just for the act of owning slaves let alone bedding and beating them. It was evil back then, and it's evil now.
I will not hear anybody out on this
*Slavery Defenders* in the comments can die mad
@So what 👎
Circumstances and what's acceptable dictates alot of people's morals. It's unfair to judge him for something that he was taught to be justified. But you can judge for what he did when his character and morals were challenged. The closet anology I can use for a modern day scenario is like owning a pet. If you take care of it treat it with love then you'll be judged accordingly. However if you beat and belittle said creature then your a monster. For intents and purposes, owning slaves can not be used to condemn him, but what he does with them can. Him beating Arnheld to the brink of death solidified him as a monster and showed his true colors when the walls around him are closing in. He may have treated his slaves with respect beforehand but it's easy to keep your morals when your living in luxury. Ketil is a broken man that is about to lose everything but he won't gain my sympathy. I understand him, but his own inaction and his lack of conviction showed what he is like when he's down on his last leg.
You can only say that with your modern view, you have no idea what life back then was and this anime/manga story can show you 10% what it was for people living back then. So your whole point is that this is wrong in 2000AD, when you clearly have no idea how human society worked 1000 years ago in Northern Europe. I am same side on that it's wrong, but we can never understand living in that culture as we literally have never lived back then. You don't need to accept it or think it's right, but trying to tell how people lived wrongly back then is just ignorant of you.
@@thamor4746 it's ignorant to pretend at any time in human history that slavery wasn't evil and dehumanizing. We had nailed emotional intelligence by fucking ancient Rome, these characters are doing this shit in 1013 AD. He's just an extremely insecure man with a fragile ego. He feels insecure compared to his son, and the fact that all this while he faked his identity about the Iron Fist story. And there's nobody to vent all his pent up feelings to as he's afraid he'll be viewed as weak. So he only have Arnheid to "trust". And that trust was broken (not her fault too), so he felt like he has nothing in his world anymore. He's just venting his emotions in the worst possible way, by physically abusing her. This is all too common.

It really burns me that there is still some kind of slavery happening in the world today. There is a special place in hell for anyone holding others against their will. Stories like these merely show the horror slaves had to deal with.

For people defending Ketil and saying it was okay to do what he did to Arnhield by the standards of the time because that was accepted back then, well actually no, even in that time, many people within his own farm found it unacceptable to treat slaves the way he does to Arnhield here. Even if owning slaves was a norm then, Thorfinn, Ketil's father, even Snake (when he comments on Gardar killing his master as being okay because he treated his slaves so badly) and potentially many others thought it unjustified to treat slaves as worse than animals. So the morality of slavery and how to treat slaves was already under question even then by some people, in this fictional work of Vinland Saga atleast. Now if a so called "benevolent and kind" man stoops to this level to a woman he thinks he loves, it only shows him in a possibly worse light than something someone would expect from a person like Thogil for instance
It's like all these insecure, reactionary boys in the comment section forgot that a) Thors refused to own slaves and b) paid 8 sheep to make sure a slave did not have to return to a place where he would be tortured. If people didn't object to slavery during a time when slavery was being practised, we would never have abolished slavery (and even nowadays there are sadly parts of the world where slavery still exists). And when he's put up to task, his reaction is always going to be to lash out at whoever he feels is beneath him, usually the people he's "saved," while also avoiding any form of responsibility.
100%
I think everybody here forgets something when it comes to how our characters, people of 1011, perceived slavery. When told by his men that Gardar escaped and killed his master, Snake says that Gardar’s master was notorious for treating his slaves badly and got what he deserved. Snake, the guy who ultimately would be responsible for Gardar’s death, recognized that slavery was a shit deal. And people still say that because of the times, it’s acceptable.
Yep,to double down on this there's 4 people really looking at Ketil Horrified while he's beating down Arnheild. And Snake goes as far as to physically stop him,and basically tell him that although he can legally do this he'll still be killing an innocent woman (paraphrasing). To triple down Ketil himself was absolutely horrified by the concept of whipping slaves like 5 episodes ago
@@OK-yy6qz Ketil was clearly not of sound mind. He's a man going crazy by his bad predicament.
This is a story told by a modern author and read by a modern audience. The point being made is that appearances can be deceiving and that weak people resort to violence fairly quickly once life no longer goes well for them. Vinland Saga does not justfy Ketil's actions in any way and by the end of the Farmland arc he is a pathetic and lonely man who no longer has any ambition left in him. It's a fate that is still too good for him, given what he did to this poor woman and her unborn child.

Ketil's ideal life collapsing as the story progressed is the consequences of the stack of cards that his is false reputation. Lying to everyone that he was a brave warrior when in fact he was weak and a coward. When his youngest son lifts a blade to kill ,he becomes the very thing he feared. For people saying she was responsible for having those guards killed and hence deserved what she got, you guys are sick. First of all, those guards are not some saints. They are rapists and pillagers and they would have gangraped her many times if she wasn't Ketil's favourite sex slave and if they weren't ordered to do so. In fact they did pass such comments and would have attempted and were tempted to do exactly that. She owes them nothing if the choice is either them or life and freedom of husband she loves and who is killing guards not for some entertainment or for sadistic reasons but only in an attempt to escape an unjust confinement and being with his wife and they are trying to cage and come in his way. He is almost on a defensive auto pilot since his escape, trying his best to save and live with his wife and son who he thinks is maybe alive. Isnt it ridiculous to expect a hostage or a kidnap victim to not try to escape because maybe an attempt to escape may end up getting some goons keeping him chained killed ? Would you all not try to escape or save a love oned even if it means staking lives of those holding you chained, especially if they are already criminals and rapist thugs ?
Strange how the same people who say that slavery shouldn't be judged by today's standards and Ketil was justified in what he did, are the same ones who forget that by the standards of that age, Gardar killing those men was no big deal either. People killed each other for far less. Like a bunch of Snake's guards were bullying Einar and Thorfinn for nothing and Fox almost killed Thorfinn by slashing him repeatedly and cutting half of his ear just for some fun at the beginning. If Gardar killed such men to a legitimate cause to escape confinement and save his slave wife, it was a far more reasonable a reason than people in Vinland saga are shown to kill for. When you rape someone or hold someone hostage, be prepared to be killed when the victim tries to escape. Suddenly everyone then starts applying legal definitions of first degree murder and genocide to what Gardar did when those guards were pretty insignificant and men like those would be used as cannon fodder by Ketil and Thorgil to distract Canute in battle anyway knowing full well that they would die. If Gardar didn't kill them, they wouldn't have let him escape while being alive. Anyway in that time, even now, would do it as a desperate measure to be free. Once Gardar comes to his senses, he is a decent man who just wants to go with his wife and son unlike the guards who are thugs anyway. Their lives as per those times is valued higher only than slaves and peasants perhaps.
I can’t thank you enough for this comment. You precisely wrote everything I had in mind when reading those weird comments. Wanting freedom is the most normal thing, especially in Arnheid’s case, who endured way too much in life. Weak and evil men are one and the same
@@GigaChadh976 I think the topic is a little more broader than that. There are instances of weak people who are without courage just living a very quiet lives without harming or being a bother to anyone. Then again I do not really know what you are referring to as weak men.
Do you refer to people who just pretends to be good and harmless but ends up being incredibly selfish and cowardly to the point they would sacrifice anything to save their own comfort or do you refer to the people who are just a bit too timid and doesn't posses the capabilities to protect themselves?
It is true that people with weaker will tend to give up and betray. However can we truly see every single betrayal as evil deeds? For example let's say you working for a man who runs a horrible human experiments and let's say that experiments were quite necessary to do. But you end up betraying the man because you simply do not have the will to do such acts. Would that make you an evil person? This a strange example but I hope I am getting my point understandable.
