The Wikipedia page for Dolly Parton shows her as "active" professionally from 1956 to the present. That's *68 years* and counting! Also, being 78 now, that means she's been a professional singer since she was about ten!

The song was written as an R&B song ment for Marvin gay by the brothers Gibson of the bee gees. After Kenny Rogers showed his interest in the song it was pretty fast changed to a country song and after he recorded it solo everybody involved found that it was not meant to be a solo song and thats when dolly got invited and it became one of the best duets ever made.

I think the “Excuse me Kenny” was with regard to Dolly’s tempo change in that verse of the song. Later in the song they execute the same vocal change together!
that was my original take on the 'excuse me' after she came out flat with 'what we are'...did not look like she stepped on kenny...the small imperfection is when you know it is live and not recorded lip sync
They were very good friends until Kenny passed on. That's why this chemistry is so easy.

The day Kenny Rogers passed away(RIP), Dolly posted a video to say how she found out and to say goodbye to him. This is what she said: "I got up this morning and turned on the news hoping they would tell me what the corona virus was doin, and they told me that my friend and duet partner Kenny Rogers has passed away." I don't remember the rest off hand.
