As one of the listeners who has advocated for paces, thank you for addressing this and offering a counter. I am still not entirely convinced, but I see the limits of my point of view. And you kinda gave a bit of credence to it when discussing the Superblast 2 at "slow" paces. Recently bought it, used for an 18k run with 3x3k at incremental paces and I definitely perceived it as clunky at my warm up pace of 5'/km (8'/mi). The kind of "higher easy" that David mentions is not easy at all for me (7'/mi is 4:20'/km if I did the math correctly) and that's safely zone 3 /tempo for me.

This podcast needs way more views. There's always another race; don't risk injury; take the long view. Running is a lifetime practice. Really appreciating DoR's measured and wise counsel here, especially Matt's unpopular opinion to skip alcohol in recovery. (He didn't say that precisely, but I am!)

I agree with you David on Asics GT 2000 13. It is the new dark horse!

Really enjoyed the discussion about recovery after a half or full marathon. I did my first trail 50k a little over three weeks ago and took an entire week off to just sleep and go on walks. I was still sore heading into week two so I took it easy on the mileage and no speedwork. I did the same this past week but felt good enough to do an 11 mile trail run. My resting HR has been above normal and my HRV has been below normal since my race. Good news is my resting HR and HRV have finally started to rebound this weekend and are both back within normal ranges.

Love the content. On the line of the Big Sir race, I’m doing a 17mi trail race that is said to have 3000ft vertical gain.

I did a half marathon in Indianapolis Oct 5 which turned out to also have a lot of master runners because it was the 2024 USATF Masters Half Marathon Championship. Pretty cool to run with them.

For those answered they don't have a bucket list race: big 5 marathon. Marathon through a safari park in S. Africa between all the animals. And it's somewhat flat...

The Glideride 3s worked really well for me and my hallux rigidus toes. So disappointed with the Glideride Max, especially after the looooong wait.
I picked up a pair of the Shift 3s just before they were discontinued, and they also worked well, so I snapped up another pair in a clearance sale. So glad I did.

Just a guess here as I haven't run in either of them, but perhaps the Altra FWD Via is the most similar to the endorphin shift 3.

I recently ran my 1st marathon at over 5 hours. For the people in this pace almost no one used carbon plated / super shoes. I find the at slower paces that comfort and weight is more important than carbon and energy return. What are your thoughts on the benefits of super shoes at slower paces?

It’s a long watch, but see this interview for the science of slower runners with super shoes: ua-cam.com/video/QsELsAZDDok/v-deo.htmlsi=oB1gIGdGkrBmXY6A
At that time, it really comes down to comfort for sure. Some may want a super shoe just for the liveliness over the run, but even then it has to also be comfortable for spending that much time on feet and for some stable enough to stand and walk in as you fatigue.

Shift 3 replacement is kinvara pro - saucony big mistake was not to call that shoe shift 4... its more lively, bouncy and more exiting shift 3 or evolution of it (better or worst is up for discussion)
Only thing imo kinvara pro should have different is removal of unnecessary plate and some rubber on outsole ....

I was not expecting it but the Puma Fast R V2 does stress my Achilles Tendon. I was expecting it to shift the load higher but maybe it is the soft midsole?

For those of us with hallux rigidus, how about the Hyperion Max 2? Thanks! I have found the Skyward X works well for me - no toe pain in that one.

I had glycerin max but right around mile 6( 7.5/8 km) I started to have a pinch or heat build in forefront has anybody been through this issue. Size 12+

Same here also sz 12. First run was six miles, hot spot on the inner side of my right foot. Took time off from the shoe so the sensitivity could go away (ran about 4 miles in Puma Mag Max a few days later no issues at all). Ran 10 miles in the Glycerin Max today which I tied tighter and applied a runner's knot and made it pass 6 without rubbing but by the time I go to 10 both feet started rubbing in the inner side of the shoe. It looks as though the foam is bending into the side of my foot as I transition to toe off when attempting to replicate the feeling in the house.

Soft shoes obviously, no debate necessary, common sense

It is not common sense. Plenty of experienced runners disagree with you.
