Best software limiter I’ve ever used.. transparent / low cpu / great... GREAT sound. Thanks for taking the time an doing it right. Thanks for the monthly affordable bundle option. PA 🙌🏻
While it looks/sounds like it's a great stereo limiter, when dealing with TV broadcast standards (shown in the presets), it should also be able to do surround. Fabfilter Pro L2 can handle up to 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos.
The Pro-L 2 was flatter because it was the most transparent. The other two distorted the low end and changed the character. The new bx offering seems interesting though, worth a look.
Thank you for a great review. I compared bx limiter with Elevate and I honestly don't think it even comes close to my ears and preference. The reason why is that I find it to have a sound/character that it impacts to my mix. Elevate on the other hand does not change my mix character and gives me the cleanest gain of all limiters I've tested in the market. So I hope you added elevate to the limiters you compared.
Tough example to judge from, but the bx has a great sound and it’s feature set makes it a no-brainer for adding to the toolbox. I still find Elevate and Ozone 9 (using the whole advanced 9) is pretty amazing and tough to beat, but I’ll be anxious to try this new bx limiter regardless. Thanks for the review!!
I’m a big fan of the foundation ‘tone knob’. Tilt is probably the most useful, musical EQ of all, and it’s really hard to accomplish manually. Every EQ should have it.
Man i didn't know this existed and i've had in my PA bundle for however long. To me the Brainworx limiter seems to have more "style". It just sounds cooler to me, don't know how else to put it. It almost feels more like an analog compressor in that way compared to the other 2. This limiter will work really well for hip hop, house, indie rock, all those trendy sorta genres. But probably more of a niche limiter in that way. But hey, those are handy to have. Glad i came across this vid, gonna incorporate it now. Cheers
I do think it sounds amazing. I prefered the L2 over the Ozone one. But BX has those added features. The L2 also has other algorithms as well as look ahead and oversampling but not the EQ and saturation. I also prefer the display on the L2. I like to be able to see the input and output simultaneously. I really like the loudness presets BX added. Very useful. I'll usually add any EQ/saturation prior to the final limiter, so these BX features, while very nice, may not be the best EQ/saturation choices. I'd like to hear a more apples to apples comparison. It does sound VERY GOOD though. BX is pretty amazing in general. I think you might be confusing gain reduction and input gain.
It's really about how it sounds, which is why FF and Ozone both feature multiple Algorithms. Like the Best limiter is the one with the most algorithms in my opinion. Also I really doubt they've managed to find a way to limit that sounds that much better than any other limiter. I'm not convinced such a thing exists, but I suppose I'd like to think it does. It really also is highly dependent upon the genre as well.
agree 100%. Fab filter didn't sound great on this example. But it's beaten out other limiters in other songs so I find limiter to be something that is very source-dependent.
Two main things that come to my mind when trying to use it: Distortion and instant reduction of transients. Fabfilter is so much better, even in your comparison, although the difference is far more obvious in more punchy pop, electronic, rock, metal genres, that rely on keeping the transients alive. It can be a creative tool of course, but it's not even close to a transparent mastering limiter that should keep the sound as close to the original as possible.
Of course, he's using True Peak's built in saturation and EQ effects, so the sound is obviously going to diverge from the source. I don't have Pro L, but I have the other 2. True Peak sounds punchier than Ozone, even without the window-dressing features. To my ears at least in this video, it beats both the other 2.
For everyone criticizing the True Peak for not being as transparent: It's marketed as the opposite of a transparent limiter. "Finally, a limiter you'll love for the sound!" Let's review this limiter on it's own merits?
Not sure if anybody noticed this already... You said you don't see much reason to switch into classic mode at 2:58 at 3:13 you adjusted the gain and the plugin flipped from modern to classic mode -- weird behavior??
@@mixedbymatty Ozone was a bit rounder and softer in the bass, but retained similar transients in the top end. I preferred the Bx for bottom end natural punch in the kick.
the bx limter just blow the L2 out the water ,that aggression on the bx made my better maker hardware unit sound like shit when I a b the two yesterday night wow Brainworx did a tremendous job with this one
I’d actually wonder what the null test difference would be between 2x vs 32x oversampling. I know it would exist. And I wonder what oversampling BX is doing. Limiting usually provides distortion artifacts and opportunity for aliasing (the one major alleviator is oversampling) but 32x oversampling can’t go into a mixing session. Maybe 4x. BX is also probably doing it’s own look ahead- likely indicated by its latency. Dithering is also overrated. That’s just for output conversion for final tracks to prevent bit distortion artifacts from 32 to 24/16 bit depth. The BX could be better than we think (or a fad lol). Hard to beat what the Pro L2 gave the pop industry.
Not impressed, Ozone sounds way better and natural, "analogy". I don't know if ozone adds some coloring/character to the sound, but for me sounds more pleasing than two other options. Ozone is the best choice here.
It's hard to beat. They approach sound from 20 years in the future, and the algorithms they use.....fantastic. Worst interface, but always light years ahead.
I use Weiss DS-1 MK3, Fab Filter Pro Q3 and New Fangled Audio Elevate as my main go to limiters. I have Ozone 9 Maximizer and Waves L2 but rarely use those.
Helpful video but please stop clicking solo right on the beat, it totally covers up hearing the downbeat of the loop and messes up any instantaneous comparisons we'd be able to make
PA sounds lifeless and dull compare to the others. I use Eventide Elevate, pretty much beats all the others soft limiters I've used. Honourable mentions to UAD Chandler limiter and Weiss.
People who talk about differences between transients and colour in the comment, then if you go and see they use a couple of 150 euro krk. Just Shut up please 🙏
Yes I heard that too in this example but not with their other plugins. It is the transient shaping that it is doing it I think. It imparts a character. It is maybe what you want or not. In this track I didn't like that sharpness that you mention on the percussion. I'll demo it. If you can dial that aspect of its sound in and out to taste it might be good to have on board. It is certainly a contender for some mixes from what I can hear but I'll form my own opinion with the trial.

Why would anyone using the XLV2 switch to this one?
My Oxford limiter has been my Go to for so many years, can’t wait to check this one out.
I recently added the Oxford Sonnox limiter to my list as well since it had a major discount. Pretty dope limiter :)

Elevate bundle is a gift of gods : )
For real. Elevate is the best for me
I just tried the demo, its up there but not as good as Newfangled Audios "Elevate"

I agree. Source dependent.
A Limiter with a lot more algorithms is the DMG Audio Limitless. My guess is it could be tweaked and outdo all 3 of these.

My favorite limiter is DMG Limitless! It is so great! I had the Newfangled limiter but like the Limitless more. Maybe a comparison between those two?
Totally agree. The amount of tweakable settings on Limitless, gives it more edge, I believe.
Peace. What you think of the Weiss limiter and their other plugins? the Plugin Alliance mix/master package is fire
Loving it!
My 3 go-to limiters are in order:
Mastering The Mix Limiter
BX True Peak
Ozone Maximizer
Do you have any observations on stereo imaging and apparent width? Your review seemed to concentrate on loudness and transients.
For everyone criticizing the True Peak for not being as transparent: It's marketed as the opposite of a transparent limiter. "Finally, a limiter you'll love for the sound!" Let's review this limiter on it's own merits?
Sounds good. Have you tried the eventide elevate. I think it will probably be more of a match.
Yeah I'm a big fan of that one. I have it as one of my limiters in my template.
I agree. I think Elevate is definitely up there as a limiting suite with similar components. But the BX one does it in a simpler UI
Maximizer it is!
The link between the ceiling ang the link can be used as unity gain I guess

@@aces3261 Limmidder ----- No
I installed it. Great video BTW.
Very good plugin, but doesn't beat other competitors, Ozone, TDR limiter 6, Pro-L2, or AOM. and in this example Ozone sounded best.
So, what about a Dithering? I don't see a Dither option like in Pro L2 and Ozone Maximizer.
I prefer Ozone 9 in this example, more punch
I think they were both pretty close for sure. What surprised me was how fab filter didn’t stand up like those two.

The L2 has 32x Oversampling which is crazy, Look ahead, Dithering... I dig this UI but it ain't up there... yet.

I hate seeing FFL2 called L2.
L2 is Waves... Sure, Its not in this shootout, but generally, on the net, so many call the FFPL2. Just L2.
if you don´t take away the saturation(XL) in BX, the comparison is not fair at all.

thoughts compared to oxford limiter?
Never used that one much. Can’t really compare.
PA: Finally, a True Peak Limiter that actually sounds GREAT
DMG Audio Limitless: Hold my beer
How does it compare to your Bettermaker Mastering Limiter?
Kinda a different beast-man, so tough to compare. :)
come on, with bx XL on, really?
You demonstrated the limiter in “classic” mode the whole time...is there a sound difference if you used “modern” mode...?
Hey man. Ya Had it in classic mode for the drums. Modern for the music and comparison. Modern does sound a bit more punchy.
