This piano has hardly been used at all and was in a cold room so had probably absorbed some moisture. We therefore lubricated the hammer hinges with Protek and also the felt and wood around the balance rail key pin. We are also voicing the una corda and doing other fine regulation and voicing.

    Good evening from Sicily
How do I know if a Steinway 274 copper string is yielded?
makes a sound with a metallic shuffle.

I thought that it should travel so far that only one string was hit by the hammer.

Thank you for your comment. Yes, originally it was called "Una corda" when there were only two strings per note in the middle, so it would indeed travel far enough to miss one of them. This still happens where there are two strings in the tenor and top bass areas. However, once a third string was added it can only travel far enough to miss one of them. It is possible to regulate it to completely miss one, but the best contrast if achieved by voicing between the string marks. In the bottom bass there is only one string so the hammer moves sideways to present a different part of it to the string. If you have any further queries please feel free to write to us at info@robertspianos.com. Marcus.
