We'd love to learn from tuners and technicians so any comments you have are most welcome.

Hi, you mentioned humidity in this video. What is in your experience a good range (maximum/minimum) to keep the piano working optimally? Also, does it depend on the make/model, being as they all use different combinations of wood in construction?

I had that same impurity at the break point on a model V I tuned last week I thought I was going mental! I had to leave it best I could and just put it down to false beats. I’m glad you’ve said that now I don’t feel as if I was losing the plot 😅

It’s so encouraging to see other tuners not tuning in a strictly equal way. It produces a much more natural and musical result. It is a great shame if exams and trade associations won’t allow tuners to tune like this, the focus should instead be on stability, the quality of the unisons and the end result rather than counting fifths.

Yes - I've been tuning unequal for around 17 years - 12 of research and 5 to reach perfection . . . and would fail professional exams although tuning nowadays for the best. I introduced Marcus to Kellner and it's great to see him bringing it forward. However, I give the temperament a twist but that's another story.

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, but am intrigued and fully absorbed by it all the same. Would you please do an idiot‘s guide/intro to the world of tuning at some point please, similar to the circle of fifths exposé you did a while back which was most educational?

I’ve been learning to tune my piano, and making some good progress. Been using a ETD, but I’m starting to work on aural tuning. The information in this video was helpful. I also appreciate the information on your techniques for voicing, though my piano technician may cringe at the thought of me trying to do my own voicing! 😅 Maybe someday.

That polishing job is amazing. Do you do that in house? This was a very interesting video, especially the temperament system and the refacing method/tool. I'm taking a trip to the chemist tomorrow!

UA-cam comes up with repeated suggestions of what might interest me. Something I get criticised for by American technicians is not tuning with the lever at a 1 o'clock position and instead being much more pragmatic with ergonomic positioning at 3 o'clock which like you I find much easier and controllable.

Yes, I agree, everyone's different so there should't be any rules except to tune well and make sure the tuning lasts for a long time too. Marcus

@@RobertsPianos It's not only that but also that all pianos are different. Experience leads one to work with different instruments in different ways and some demand one to use different techniques. Position of lever can for instance depend upon how the pin wants to be set, and how stable the pin-string relationship when one ceases pressure on the lever.

Thank you so much indeed for sharing your tuning technique. Like all your other videos it's always very educational. I'm curious if you've ever had to tune a century old piano, say from 1890-1910, with the original set of strings? Could the original strings last 100 years or more? Thanks very much.

Thank you for your encouragement. Yes, we regularly tune pianos from that era whose strings are still fine. If it's a good make of piano then the strings will still sound good after 100 years. Marcus

Bechstein experimented with a logarithmic rather than a stepped bridge so that the harmonics would be beating and wonder if they were deliberately creating false beats to make the instrument sound more alive and less clinical. It's a phenomenon so prevalent to Bechstein that a deliberate intention might be beyond the bounds of pure speculation.

Thanks David, we've often wondered whether the false beats were deliberate and they are as you know so common around the octave C5 to C6. Marcus

It's great to see you taking Kellner forward - the way that I tune it derives from a dozen years of research and five years of finding perfection - and giving it a special twist. The effect can be important - ua-cam.com/video/RXymuml03pE/v-deo.html (14:02 onwards) is possibly the most perfect tuning I've done, achieving resonance of a Yamaha C3 to work satisfactorily in a situation for which it would normally be under powered and having revoiced hammers to give adequate softness whilst still able to cut through in an orchestral environment. ua-cam.com/video/yffLniiZAoc/v-deo.html is a recent well tuned concert of Bechstein Model III
