Detroiters Are Waging Paintball Wars As A Way To Stop Gang Violence

- Police in several cities across the U.S. are trying to put a stop to the groups of men waging paintball battles as a part of #PaintballsUpGunsDown - an anti-gun violence campaign police are calling misguided.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the #PaintballsUpGunsDown movement has gotten out of control and could backfire if officers mistake a paintball gun for a real firearm.
The grassroots movement first gained traction on social media in early April as a proposed way to resolve conflicts with paint instead of bullets. Since then, participants from Atlanta to Detroit have engaged in full blown paintball wars on city streets, with as many as 50 shooters taking aim at each other at once, hitting innocent bystanders and marking up cars and homes.
Over the last week, police in Detroit started making arrests for destruction of property. Paintballers say they're being targeted for being young and black and that cleaning up paint is a lot better than picking up dead bodies.

How could you possibly spin it in a positive light? You know it's extremely easy to just not murder people, right?

"We settled a lot of beef" "It brought people together" and that's the whole point. Why take and lose lives over beef? A lot of people who grow up in neighborhoods like this are forced into the same lifestyle and mindset as everybody else. It runs back generations. Government doesn't help aid these people, nor are their solutions for the crimes all that good. What needs to happen is a reshaping of the way people live in places like this. You can't just arrest every gang member and call it a day. You gotta make an impact that's gonna teach the younger generation why they shouldn't be killin each other, cuz all their life they've been told they should.
It's not as simple as you think it is. Unfortunately when you beefing with somebody you never know what THEY'RE gonna do, so you gotta act first or risk dying without knowing what even hit you in alot of cases. I'm sure some ppl just wanna kill ppl or some just wanna be gangsta but for most ppl it's about surviving. Rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6 is the way it's gotta be for many.

Whether it hits someone in the face at that point is out of their control. If its just for fun, i see no reason to organise a group to go play at a proper field and go back home fully satisfied. Bringing the feeling of dangers and the threat of injury to the home that a drive by of any nature ; be it a paintball or an airsoft gun, is not the answer to rivalries. Nor a step in the right direction to achieve a safer neighborhood. There is a stigma in paintball as a result to these kinds of things. Anyone who actively plays would refer to their gun as a "Paintball Marker" rather than say " paintball gun" to avoid any sort of confusion or accidentally stir panic in public. And with the rise of magfed markers; such as the first strike T15, tippmann TMC, and other such platforms taking direct inspiration from AR Platforms. Some even functioning similar to them, its become more of a delicate issue in terms of public views and its sense of safety.

All while breaking windows out of neighboring property and targeting businesses such as the ice cream truck that roll through your neighborhood. Then, all of you will complain about living In rundown neighborhoods and businesses not wanting to come to your area. This is literally the mindset of people that have never grown up in life and then want to blame everyone but themselves for their actions.
You're missing the point entirely. You got men at war with other men- doesn't matter what color they are because humans in general are aggressively territorial animals, this story just happens to take place in Detroit where 78% of its population consists of black people. These men have been taught their whole lives that violence is the way to handle their problems whether they saw it on the streets in their own communities, or how our own government handles us or on the news watching other men fighting wars. And I keep saying men, because here these young black men recognized that all the violence and bloodshed wasn't solving anything and they came up with a risky idea to give angry young men that aggression and violence they needed to release the anger and tension they felt without having to take someone else's life. They could've been gunned down on that first drive by in rival territory, but when the adrenaline wore off and their rivals realized they weren't dead, they also adopted the non lethal approach. You have no idea how inspiring that is do you? Because you've obviously never lived in a neighborhood filled with rival gang members. Being a neutral white woman that has, this gives me hope, not only for the many people I've known who were about that life but for mankind in general. And I can already hear your privileged response about people choosing that life... unless you're a minority growing up in one of those neighborhoods, you'll never understand just how much safer it feels to have an entire army watching your back in the war zone vs walking alone while bullets whiz past your head. These men cracked that code, and find a way to not only coexist, but to bring people together... windows were breaking before and businesses were getting shot up only paint is easier to fix than holes and people were dying. Of course the cops don't like it, they already couldn't tell the difference between guns and literally anything else a black man has in his hand, and they'd much rather these men keep killing each other instead of coming together and focusing that anger and aggression on the real enemy.

@@maxim6088 Yeah that's true what you are saying but, police and other people would mistaken a airsoft gun then a paintball gun. Trust me I play in airsoft fields with thousands of dollars worth of airsoft guns. Most of the airsoft guns nowadays mimic real guns like they dont even have an orange tip on the gun.
@@drinkableslug7894 true, even with an orange tip, you can easily mistake the rifles for real fire arms, ussualy something like and AR with an extended rail, has a very poorly visible orange tip, so it literally can't be differentiated from a real weapon from certain angles, and the blowback pistols, are extremely real life like

No amount of equipment or officers in the way they operate now will never fix crime. Because mistakes happen some people don't care there is no "fix" its just better education, rehabilitation and better environments with opportunities to thrive without having to resort to violence.

However, you can dump as much money as you want into reform and preventive action programs, they won’t work if theres no police officers to put pressure to participate in them.
