- On Chicago's West Side, there is a school for the city's most at-risk youth - the Moses Montefiore Academy. Most of the students at Montefiore have been kicked out of other schools for aggressive behavior, and many have been diagnosed with emotional disorders.
Last Chance High takes viewers inside Montefiore's classrooms and into the homes of students who are one mistake away from being locked up or committed to a mental hospital.
In the first episode of the eight-part original VICE News series we are introduced to two 14-year-old Montefiore students, Cortez and Crystal, who were sent to the school after violently attacking teachers. Cortez's mother blames the boy's father, who is serving a life sentence for murder. Crystal has stabbed her classmates and been caught shoplifting since arriving to Montefiore - which has left her mother on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Though the task can be overwhelming, the Montefiore staff never gives up trying to reach the city's most difficult and volatile student population.

it begins with the parents. it all starts in the household and how the parents begin teaching their children how to act within the world. it is unfortunate to see a situation like crystal’s where her mother’s unable to own her responsibility and take action for her situation. trauma is generational, and hopefully they all grew up to be alright.
It does start with the parents, but if the parents do not know how to navigate the world themselves then how can they possibly teach their children?? When they can't, then this is what you get.
@@teeada6858 if it’s okay with you if i speak on my lived experience, which isn’t much, honestly, i’m not able to speak too much on how unfit parenting could lead a child to an environment like this in pre adolescence. it looks truly enduring and i could never imagine the kind of pain that would come with that; i am afraid though at a certain level of bringing my own children into this world because of what it could mean for them in this world, or how i would do with raising them with my issues, etc. i would internalize worlds of pain knowing that i did wrong by my children.

This was filmed in 2014, and some of the behaviors deemed 'extreme' in this footage are now commonplace in many more public schools across the country. Ever since the 2020 lockdowns it's gotten way worse. Teaching in 2016 is WAY different from my experience teaching from 2020-currently. Apathy went up (if that was even possible), students getting into violent conflicts w/ classmates went up, students assaulting teachers went WAY up, and students just doing whatever they want w/ limited options for consequences is the new reality (if your school admin refuses to suspend students or put them in ISS, of course).
Yes legislation passed to combat blacks getting disciplined more often than other cultures. It was identified as a race issue and now we let everyone just do and say whatever without discipline

It’s a black kid
@@JohnDoe-eb7lv none of theme are never nice or negotiable
@@Us3r739 wtf what does his color have to do with it.
Not emotionally disturbed, rather lacking a father in the home and discipline as children.
The effort the teachers are putting in for these students is really nice. Also can we talk about the dangerous job of the film crew? Like they in the middle of fights trying not to get hit lol
It's obvious so many of these children have been raising themselves and have been expose to adult life way too soon. I Pray for them.
What need to happen is for people who know they cant afford a kid to stop having them
What a Karen
*KAREN*
Seems like a Karen
Amro Homsani She’s a Karen because she’s right?

Teacher: What is 4 X 4
Kid: 8
Kid in the background: 16
Thanks I totally missed that
"will you be quiet"
"whats 1000 minus 7?"
that scene was hilarious lmao
the kid said 13, not 16
a lot of this can be avoided with strong fathers who are present in the life of the child.
Even how assholish these kids seem, I feel bad for them a lot. Whether it’s poverty or a troubled household. I just wish for a better life for them. Makes me sad they started out with no opportunities
The amount of training and support these teachers need is astronomical, but I know they’re probably not getting half of what they need.
Earning half of what they need ?
@@simongonzales3239that is what I am assuming he is saying
Half the money and half the supplies another suburban school would get...
it’s not fair for teacher also tho
@@simongonzales3239 I wasn’t thinking about that specifically but I guess because I assume everyone knows teachers are underpaid and overworked - especially when working in urban communities with students who have plenty of needs.
After rewatching, I realize it was a terrible idea to put problematic kids all together in a school. These kids needed structure & one on one guidance. These kids needed to be taken out of their environment & taken some where they can be disciplined then given the attention they need. They are truly a product of their environment.
That's the thing with all these 'revisionist' government projects, they're all idealistic and definitely going to change lives until it fails.
Then a few years later, another project.
Seriously lmfao, these kids need to be sent to military school or something
Get a school vounslur or something
Millitary School or Job Corp
Sadly most of these kids are dead now
That clock in the classroom reminds me of when I was in elementary school.
