  • On Chicago's West Side, there is a school for the city's most at-risk youth - the Moses Montefiore Academy. Most of the students at Montefiore have been kicked out of other schools for aggressive behavior, and many have been diagnosed with emotional disorders.
Last Chance High takes viewers inside Montefiore's classrooms and into the homes of students who are one mistake away from being locked up or committed to a mental hospital.
In the first episode of the eight-part original VICE News series we are introduced to two 14-year-old Montefiore students, Cortez and Crystal, who were sent to the school after violently attacking teachers. Cortez's mother blames the boy's father, who is serving a life sentence for murder. Crystal has stabbed her classmates and been caught shoplifting since arriving to Montefiore - which has left her mother on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Though the task can be overwhelming, the Montefiore staff never gives up trying to reach the city's most difficult and volatile student population.

This was filmed in 2014, and some of the behaviors deemed 'extreme' in this footage are now commonplace in many more public schools across the country. Ever since the 2020 lockdowns it's gotten way worse. Teaching in 2016 is WAY different from my experience teaching from 2020-currently. Apathy went up (if that was even possible), students getting into violent conflicts w/ classmates went up, students assaulting teachers went WAY up, and students just doing whatever they want w/ limited options for consequences is the new reality (if your school admin refuses to suspend students or put them in ISS, of course).

That math teacher got more aggressive, emotional, etc. than i ever would in a classroom. But his classroom was a different from mine.
Regardless of that difference, I would absolutely get in a student's face if I met their parent and had occasion to talk to the student 1 on 1.
Never wanted to hurt a student. But I've definitely acted like I wanted to or looked like it to make an impression. Just gotta bring love with it. Sure the teacher brings the same thing. And there's no question he's there to help. He could find a teaching job elsewhere. We need them everywhere in this country.

Even though I understand that when the kids were cheering on Spanky in the gym class it is a rare occasion. When the same kids that cheered him on there is hanging out with other, more popular kids they would bully him. But it still warms my heart to see. I've seen this series a couple of times now and I SO wish that you could get a hold on the "lost" episode/episodes. For some reason I find Spanky very relatable. You invent a symptom, way of thinking or what ever in the hopes of something positive. But everyone realize from the very start that you are faking it to get sympathy or what ever. Then you have to double down on it, triple down, quadruple down, etc. The deeper the whole you dig for your self the harder it is to climb out of it. I wish I knew that Spanky became successful and has a great life now.
